This is my favorite cookbook! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I'm so happy that I bought Dr. Siegel's book. His simple, easy to follow recipes are the delight of my kitchen. I can't say enough good things about it. It's also a great book to read and learn from. mmm...red-cooked chicken...

Editorial Review:

Some classic Jewish foods are analogous to Chinese versions-hence the title, From Lokshen to Lo Mein. Lokshen are Jewish noodles used in many recipes, an analog to Lo Mein noodles used in Chinese cooking. Along with Don Siegel’s favorite Chinese kosher recipes, the author includes some comments on the connection of Jews and Chinese culture, where to get kosher Chinese ingredients, a few jokes about Jews and Chinese food, a short section on what 'kosher' means for those unfamiliar with Jewish dietary laws, and digressions on Chinese cooking techniques and products. Have fun cooking authentic Chinese dishes while reading interesting topics: The Evolution of Chinese Cooking, The Jewish Experience in China, The American-Jewish Chinese Connection, The Chinese Kitchen Cabinet, The Drop Dead Tip for Making a Chinese Dinner.

Wonderful book NUTRILICIOUS 5 out of 5 stars.

The book NUTRILICIOUS is a wonderful book ! Its content can easily upgrade anyone's health, energy and appreciation of life.

Not for vegetarians 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Editorial Review said this was a vegetarian cook book. Just be aware that it is not. It has recipes for fish, which being a vegetarian I could not use. Had I known there were fish recipes I probably would not have bought it. If you are a "real" vegetarian this book will not work out for you.
"VEGETARIAN" is defined as someone who doesn't eat animals
"FISH" is defined as cold-blooded, water-dwelling animal

Vegetarians don't eat fish and they never have.

Editorial Review:

An easy-to-read vegetarian cookbook, containing all the recipes needed for a healthier lifestyle, with the least amount of time and effort in the kitchen. The ingredients used are all fresh, unprocessed, whole, organic - wherever possible, and kosher. Occasional humor adds a light touch to the writing and provides comic relief from the serious and well researched health issues candidly dealt with in the book.

Editorial Review:

Ethel Hofman's Mackerel at Midnight: Growing Up Jewish on a Remote Scottish Island is a collection of remarkable stories about the meeting of two diverse cultures in a unique landscape. Fleeing Russia a century ago, the author's family finds safe haven in Lerwick, Shetland, where they open "Greenvald's," the shop on Commercial Street. Her father, Harry, embraced by the locals, soon turns the shop into the beloved gathering place for "a good yarn and a dram of whisky."

This is also the story of Jean, the wife Harry brings to Lerwick through a marriage broker. Though an ocean away from other Jews, Jean Greenwald, "Our Ma," vows to rear her children with deep pride in their heritage and religion. Despite the hardships, good food always brings solace, and recipes for the Jewish and island dishes she prepares weave through the narrative. Both memoir and cookbook, Mackerel at Midnight brings the reader back to gentler times that exemplify how food can instill a lasting identity, and people of different religions and cultures can live together in peace.

Every recipe I tried was perfect! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The recipes were submitted by residents of the Denver metro area and were tried three times by testing committees before decision was made to put them in Shalom on the Range. Many traditional Jewish recipes, Southwestern cuisine and good American dishes. All are made with kosher ingredients and specify whether meat or dairy.

The recipes are to die for. 4 out of 5 stars.

I've tried many of these recipes for my family and relatives. With no exceptions we've been pleased with the all the results. A definite must for any Jewish cookbook collection.

Editorial Review:

In this beautiful new book, acclaimed author and chef Rabbi Gil Marks offers a complete guide to entertaining for Jewish holidays and other family celebrations.

From the time Abraham and Sarah entertained passing strangers in their simple tent, hospitality has been a significant aspect of Jewish life. For generations, Jewish parents have taught their children how to create a traditional home, passing down many lifetimes of accumulated wisdom along with their family recipes. But as the world changes, Jewish entertaining changes too. Modern Jews want to add exciting new dishes to their traditional menus and they want a practical guide to serving elegant meals whether for a large crowd or an intimate gathering. Now, in the only book of its kind, The World of Jewish Entertaining demystifies the experience of entertaining.

Marks presents a "Guide for the Perplexed Host," practical advice, easy-to-follow recipes for a wide variety of dishes from the most homey and traditional foods to haute cuisine, and complete menus for

  • a Sephardic Seder
  • a Baby-Naming Breakfast
  • an Eclectic Purim Feast
  • an All-Dessert Bar or Bat Mitzvah
  • a Middle Eastern Wedding Shower
  • an International Sabbath Dinner
  • a Healthy New Year Dinner
  • a Southern Jewish Family Reunion

and much more. In addition, he provides background information on all the events, putting them in a traditional Jewish context.

The World of Jewish Entertaining is the perfect cookbook for anyone looking for a fresh new perspective on entertaining.

Truly the most amazing cookbook you will ever use 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This cookbook is a real treat to use. The recipes do not call for expensive and difficult to find items. Best of all the recipes are all wonderful and sure to become your staple foods. A kosher kitchen is not complete without this book.

This is the best cookbook for general/traditional Ashkenazi cooking 5 out of 5 stars.

I grew up in Toronto and my grandmother used this book as well as my mother, if you had a real bubby who spoke yiddish and made her own wine and you know what grebanas and kishka is than this is a good book for you. This book is not gourmet by any means. Some recipes call for ginger ale, onion soup mix, and lots of ketchup.... my kind of cook book.

    Editorial Review:

Even better than the first 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Even better than the first volume, with more discussions and examples. The recipes, as with Volume I, are as classic as ever, and well balanced. Strongly recommend.

A book to read as well as to cook from 5 out of 5 stars.

In "The Classic Cuisine of the Italian Jews II," Edda Servi Machlin provides vivid descriptions of the daily life of the once-flourishing Jewish community of Pitigliano in Italy's Tuscan hills. Accompanying the more than 250 recipes is a rich treasury of the history, lore, and cultural and religious traditions of this thousand-year-old village, where Ms. Machlin lived as a girl and as a young woman. Included are recipes for Italian dishes adapted to fit Jewish dietary laws as well as dishes that combine ancient Sephardic preparations with Italian cooking. This volume is more than a cookbook; it is a valuable cultural document.

By offering many full menus, A Taste of Tradition, makes holiday meal planning easy and fun, covering everything from luscious canapés and hors d'oeuvres to mouth-watering desserts, with exciting and manageable dinner dishes in between. Not Worth It 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Passover is a difficult holiday for vegans to begin with, but this cookbook is a small collection of rather boring, bland recipes. I look to it every Passover, hoping to find something interesting to eat, but I never do. Maybe the trick is to make stuff from it towards the end of Passover, when you're so hungry that just about anything will seem tasty.
