Hidden treasure 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I found this book at a thriftstore. And the first recipe I tried, Poet Shelley's Chicken Soup, was so delicious. The first soup recipe that my husband actually liked and met his approval. A delightful, delicious find.

Some good oldies and some nice newies too 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a nice little cookbook. It has a back section of old recipes handed down through generations and the rest of the book consists of new recipes and updated versions of things you already like. There are healthier ways to cook a good variety of things from your Jewish cookbooks here with little snippets of background on the lineage of the recipe. The layout is pretty good and the colors are bright and cheerful. The way the spine is made the book lies open flat for ease of use while cooking. Some of the recipe instructions are a little harder than beginner but they are almost all easy to understand. I had trouble with the knish instructions on folding, but I never made a knish before.

Creative, new and different! 5 out of 5 stars.

I enjoy this book every Passover season! I have had the book for several years now, and every Passover I dazzle the relatives with delicious desserts that make everyone say "This can't be matza!" The cookies are exceptional, as are the tarts. The lasagne is also tasty! For something new this Passover season, try Matza 101!

What you can do to matza is just amazing! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great cookbook. It is full of ideas of things you can make from matza. For those of us who observe the week of Pesach, this is full of new and different ideas. Special favorites are the chips, blintzes, and tart shells. The pictures are clear and give you a good idea of what the finished product should look like.

Great Book for Cooking During Passover! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great little book for finding interesting ways to cook for Passover. I found the receipes easy to read and follow. All of the suggestions made by the authors have helped me minimize disasters in the kitchen. I find the receipes to also taste good. I haven't cooked everything in it, but the things I have over the past several years have been a hit. The Matza version of Mac and Cheese is a great example of a simple dish that folks (vegetarians and not) kept going back for seconds. Some of dishes may initially look strange when preparing them but they turn out great looking and great tasting. The way the authors describe how to "prepare the matza" is the key to everything. It was a little time consuming in the beginning but become easier as you make more dishes. Great book!

Editorial Review:

The historical, cultural, and culinary lore of the former Soviet Union are preserved and shared in Memories from a Russian Kitchen--From Shtetl to Golden Land, a treasury of recipes and reminiscences by senior emigres from the former Soviet Union.

"Food is more than sustenance," says editor Rosalie Sogolow. "It is a way to maintain and enjoy our heritage and the cultural diversity all around us. It is a way to come together and join the past to the future." When Sogolow invited her English as a Second Language students to share their favorite recipes, she found that they were inspired to share much more than combinations of ingredients. They revealed to her not only a rich culinary tradition but also their fascinating collective experience, encompassing two world wars and the unparalleled transition from shtetl existence and Tsarist monarch through communism to modern life in the "Golden Land" -- America.

Thus Memories from a Russian Kitchen is more than a cookbook. It is also a collection of remarkable stories about life in the Soviet Union, including standing in line for bread, struggling to obtain an education, planning family weddings, and much more. Beautifully illustrated by contemporary artist Bonnie Stone, the book reflects the spirit, fortitude, and irrepressible sense of humor of the Russian people despite the overwhelming hardships they faced.

Over one hundred and fifty homestyle recipes fill this precious volume, including such classic recipes as gefilte fish, borscht, kugel, and rugelah as well as family favorites like Matvei's Chicken Soup, Grandmother's Napoleon, and Lilichka's Cake. The book makes every effort to follow traditional Jewish dietary laws, and kosher substitutes are supplied wherever appropriate. Memories from a Russian Kitchen is for anyone interested in Russian Jewry, Russian history, Russian culture, and Russian cuisine.

Silver Plated Maybe 2 out of 5 stars.

This is a very nice book to look at and the recipes are accessible, not too complicated or finicky. I was disappointed because I found a lot of the recipes used processed food (such as pareve whip and soup mix) instead of fresh ingredients. For someone looking for easy and potentially elegant solutions, this book may be a great help.

Editorial Review:

Its first printing was sold out instantly--now available in its second printing! A panorama of dishes--from simple to spectacular--sure to please the most discriminating palate. Choose from more than 400 step-by-step recipes, many of which include serving tips, and all of which are absolutely delicious. Disappointed in Oklahoma 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I received my cookbook yesterday and was totally disappointed. As I keep kosher and love to cook, I buy many kosher cookbooks. However, Talk of the Table has been the worst. The recipes are uninspiring and without any indication how many they serve. If this is really coming from Israel, the authors better get out of Efrat to see what's going on. Israel has some of the best food and chefs that you can find anywhere. Too bad it was not imparted in this book. This book is going into my give away pile. Next time, look at The Kosher Palette series.

Editorial Review:

Talk of The Table boasts a unique combination of over 175 recipes from homemade delicacies to professional fare, including contributions from a number of Jerusalem's most popular caterers and restaurants such as Ticho House, Olive, and Caf Rimon, as well as treasured and varied offerings from talented home cooks. Mediterranean dishes include Stuffed Grape Leaves, exotic Meatballs with Pomegranates, and sumptuous Kuba Soup. Ashkenazi food ranges from Pastrami Chicken Roll to colorful Tomato and Black Olive Salad, and Rich Pumpkin Soup. Desserts such as Hot Apple and Pear Cake, Seriously Fudgie Brownies, and the spectacular Bubby Yetta's Hamentashen, will tempt and delight.
