Definitive Book on Jewish Meditation 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Aryeh Kaplan was a rare individual. A Jewish scholar taken from us too early. If you get the chance take a look at his biography. This is one of his better books and the best book on Jewish meditation. Nothing comes close. Oddly enough, it is also a book that I think would have great appeal to anyone who is not Jewish or perhaps not even that relegious. This book has a lot of pleasant surprises. Enjoy and learn.

A Great Place to Start on the Jewish Mystical Path 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Rabbi Kaplan's book is a great and very practical place to start the experience of "walking with God" or devekut while praying or meditating. His book is particularly helpful in understanding that there are multiple techniques available to use in meditation and the spiritual quest. Sometimes we are more familiar with techniques from other cultures, such as Zen chanting, the whirling dervishes of Sufism and the body oriented techniques of Tai Chi.

Rabbi Kaplan points out techniques that have been used by Jews in the past. Not all of the methods are strictly Jewish per se. A particularly invaluable discussion that he begins relates to the portions of the prayer service and how to utilize them in a meditative manner. This definitely helps make prayer a more spiritual experience and reinvigorates the words with the true spiritual intent of their original authors.

Editorial Review:

Kaplan shows that meditation is consistent with traditional Jewish thought and practice. The book presents a variety of meditative techniques to help make the reader a better person, and develop a closer relationship to God.

Yearnings, Embracing the sacred messiness of life 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I found it a bit difficult to read cover to cover because of it's intensity. But I still thouroughly enjoyed the book when I jumped around to read sections relevant to my life. It has something for everyone. Its a kind of book that needs to be re read a few times to get all the meanings. Overall a very nourishing book

Editorial Review:

Winner of the Books for a Better Life Award Chosen as one of "The 10 Best Spiritual Books of 2006" by Spirituality and Health magazineRabbi Irwin Kula explores desire in spiritual life. Rather than leading us astray, our longings are gateways to self discovery. Our yearnings, once understood, can lead us to discover an expansive vision of God or a wider reality. And when we embrace even our most painful or taboo desires, we can love more deeply and live more fully. The Biblical authors wrote about characters who, rather than leading perfect lives, actually struggled with their longings for success, love, sex, and happiness. Through interpreting those stories and other spiritual traditions, as well as exploring his own desires and those of regular people, Rabbi Kula shows that "The more we allow ourselves to unfold, the less likely we are to unravel. The more we dive into our desires, the more exquisite life becomes."

The best siddur for the newly religious 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The complete Artscroll Siddur is brilliant for the newly religious. It has parrallel translation on the left hand page and hebrew on the right with instructions for prayer in english on both sides, guiding the reader as he learns how to pray and eventually prays without any guides. The complete siddur includes Shabbat and weekday prayers as well as Shabbat dinner and all the minor and major holidays as well as everything else such as Rosh Chodesh that one may com across in Judaism. It is not a Machzor but it is very helpful.

Jewish and non-Jewish readings, prayers, inspirations 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Rabbi Dov Peretz Elkins edits YOM KIPPUR READINGS: INSPRIATION INFORMATION CONTEMPLATION uses a range of sources, from ancient to modern, Jewish and non-Jewish, to provide a set of readings, prayers and inspirational reflections on the themes addressed on Yom Kippur, surveying the basics and spirit of the holiday season and its relationship to both God and community. From themes of forgiveness and faith to customs and rituals, this reader makes an important point of discussion for both families and classes surveying Yom Kippur's ongoing meaning and history.

Overall a useful anthology 3 out of 5 stars.

Dov Peretz Elkins has gifted the Jewish world with many useful publications, for which we ought to be grateful. While this anthology has much that is meaningful, moving or scholarly, many of the selections strike me as filler. For those who have both the Yom Kippur and the Rosh Hashanah volumes, you will notice that much material is recycled. There are also prayers and sections of the services for which coverage is scanty or missing. Despite these defects, I am happy to have these books on my shelves and am sure that they will enrich the holidays for many as they have for me. Thank you Dov!

A wise man indeed 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 27 people found this review helpful.

There are few authors that one is even tempted to call "wise" - with Heschel one wishes to say "very wise". This anthology of short excerpts should be read in a meditational manner - he gives one much to think about - to not think about it is to miss the point of the book.

An example: "Life passes on in proximity to the sacred, and it is this proximity that endows existence with ultimate significance. In our relation to the immediate we touch upon the most distant. Even the satisfaction of physical needs can be a sacred act. Perhaps the essential message of Judaism is that in doing the finite we may perceive the infinite."

This perception of the infinite in the finite is what is called "sacramental imagination" in the Christian tradition ... which is to say while Heschel is fully within the Judaic tradition, one need not be of his tradition to learn from him.

Add this to your must read list.

Editorial Review:

Reading Heschel is to peer into the heart of that rarest of human phenomena, the holy man.

A Shabbat Morning Tool Kit 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Having studied the previous nine volumes in the Hoffman series on prayer, I find this much awaited volume to be a great help. As has been the case in the earlier volumes Hoffman provides a wide range of perspectives from which we may extract greater meaning from the prayer service. Shabbat morning is for many of a difficult service to relate to. With only once weekly frequency and the various distractions of Shabbat it can be difficult to relate to the meaning of the prayers. Hoffman provides a wonderful introduction, although parts are often borrowed from previous volumes, and then a talmudic approach to the individual verses of prayer. I always found something new and something that enhanced my understanding of the prayer and this by a person that has been davening for years and also studying t'fillah with the help of many teachers and texts.

Editorial Review:

Vol. 10--Shabbat Morning: Shacharit and Musaf (Morning and Additional Services) features the authentic Hebrew text with a new translation designed to let people know exactly what the prayers say. Introductions tell the reader what to look for in the prayer service, as well as how to truly use the commentaries and to search for--and find--meaning in the prayer book.

Framed with beautifully designed Talmud-style pages, commentaries from many of today's most respected Jewish scholars from all movements of Judaism examine shacharit and musaf from the perspectives of ancient Rabbis and modern theologians, as well as feminist, halakhic, Talmudic, linguistic, biblical, Chasidic, mystical, and historical perspectives.

A beautifully written and interesting book... 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Raised as a Presbyterian, a competitive swimmer, and a mathematician (order not important), I am not naturally drawn either to spiritual mysticism or yoga. This beautifully written and interesting book, however, has helped me to understand how one could be drawn to those things. My thanks to the author, who obviously cares very deeply about her subject.

Editorial Review:

This highly original book introduces a fascinating new approach to yoga and Torah by combining the practice of classic yoga postures with traditional and mystical Jewish wisdom. Each chapter begins by presenting a central Jewish spiritual concept that engages readers of all faiths on a personal level. It offers an in-depth exploration of the concept, quoting and commenting on sacred Jewish texts from the Pentateuch (Five Books of Moses) and other sources. It then guides its readers with mastery and clarity through a meditation and a set of fundamental yoga postures--clearly illustrated by beautiful photographs--for both beginning and advanced yoga students. The Torah concept is actualized and experienced through the practice of these postures. Torah Yoga helps to heighten awareness of body, mind, and spiritit illuminates the heart of Jewish wisdom.

Editorial Review:

For readers who wish to learn about Jewish prayer, A Guide to Jewish Prayer is the first book to read, and the one that will be the cornerstone of any collection of books on the subject. Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, a world- renowned scholar of Judaic studies and the editor and translator of Random House's 22-volume edition of the Talmud, has written this Guide in order to "open the gates of Jewish prayer for those who want to know and comprehend both its essence and its structure, and the numerous details concerning the various prayer services." Beginning with magisterial essays on the nature of prayer and the history of the Siddur (the common Jewish prayer book), Steinsaltz then moves to a detailed description of the prayer services conducted over the course of the Jewish year, and ends with a series of essays about communal prayer, including chapters on the synagogue, prayer accessories, and the music of prayer. With a comprehensive glossary and short biographies of the many rabbis who have influenced the history of Jewish prayer, Steinsaltz's Guide provides every necessary resource for understanding prayer, for every conceivable reader--from the curious gentile to the devoted Jew. -- Michael Joseph Gross

Very Helpful for People Learning Jewish Traditonal Prayers 4 out of 5 stars.
34 of 35 people found this review helpful.

The Seif Edition of the Artscroll Transliterated Linear Siddur Weekday [Prayers] is the younger sibling of Artscroll's popular "Seif Edition Artscroll Transliterated Linear Siddur Shabbat and Holidays." There are also a Rosh Hashanah Machzor and a Yom Kippur Machzor in the same format.

I like it. I am not an Orthodox Jew, but my late mother was. I lead a Jewish Renewal prayer group (newest, most liberal denomination in Judaism, as least as of 2003), and I always wanted to learn all of the traditional prayers, but I have always struggled with Hebrew. This prayerbook has been a big help.

The prayerbook has the Hebrew letters on the right side of each page, the transliterated Hebrew (Hebrew sounded out in English syllables) on the same line on the left side of the page, and the English translation on the next line, underneath them.

Already I am learning things about the prayers and their structures that I never learned using prayerbooks with Hebrew and English, but no transliteration. Reciting the prayers using the transliteration, while seeing the Hebrew letters and the English together, is helping me learn Hebrew. It also gives the prayers a greater spiritual power for me.

I feel very bonded to my mother's ancestors, they used these prayers. I expect to remain a happy Renewal Jew, but learning the full traditional prayers is giving me better grounding for co-leading my Renewal havurah.

The prayerbook was designed by Artscroll and the Orthodox Union for Jews who are unfamiliar with the traditional prayers, and has several essays on the various parts of the services, and helpful comments between the major prayers on what they mean, and their background.

I have ordered a copy of the Shabbat and Festivals "sibling" to this prayerbook, and plan to buy the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur volumes in the series as well.

Small problems: The prayerbook transliterations use the Ashkenazi (East European) old style pronunciation, not the Sephardic pronunciation that the Israelis and most non-Orthodox American Jews (Conservative, Reform, Reconstruction, Humanistic, and Renewal) use in prayer books nowadays. My ancestors used the Ashkenazi pronunciation, but it does have a few differences from the Sephardi pronunciation --- it is a bit confusing, though I "translate" the Ashkenazi pronunciation to Sephardi where I can do so.

The other problems: the format is a bit triangular, your eyes go from the Hebrew to the transliteration to the English. Also, while the prayerbook has wonderful essays to explain the prayers, the essays are written from the traditional Orthodox standpoint, so Jews from other, more liberal denominations must change mental perspective somewhat to absorb the information.

But these are really very small problems. I am just happy to be able to pray in Hebrew, while knowing what I am praying!

Editorial Review:

My People's Prayer Book is a momentous eight-volume series that opens up the traditional Jewish prayer book (the siddur) as a spiritual resource. Commentaries by respected teachers from all perspectives of the Jewish world provide the spiritual images that make up the siddur.

The seventh volume in the series explores the typical Ashkenazi-style table liturgy for Shabbat, along with a broad range of z'mirot (table songs) that reflect the rich diversity of Jewish practice. It illuminates the meanings behind the traditional blessings for ushering in Shabbat, as well as the rituals and ceremony for concluding the holy day.

My People's Prayer Book: Volume 7—Shabbat at Home features the traditional Hebrew text with a new translation that lets you know exactly what the prayers say. Introductions explain what to look for in the prayers, and how to use the commentaries to find meaning in the prayer book. Commentaries from eminent scholars and teachers from all movements of Judaism examine Shabbat at home from the viewpoints of ancient Rabbis and modern theologians, as well as a myriad of other perspectives.
