this is a great book to read if organized religion leaves you cold or if you would like to learn to do meditation with Jewish content.

Mindy Ribner was my teacher, so I was able to learn some of these meditations directly from her.I can tell you that the meditations in this book are really tremendous experiences!

A blessing to read and to reflect 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 11 people found this review helpful.

As the author, I found it to be a blessing not only to write this book but also to share it with others. And I continue to read it, as if it were written by another since the Jewish wisdom that it contains continues to inspire me.

Daily meditations to ground and focus 5 out of 5 stars.

I still use this every morning to center myself and have a positive G-d centered thought for the day. I think it was specifically created for Jews in recovery but all of us have demons and can utilize this tiny and fat source of wisdom. Everything Olitz touches turns to gold...really, buy this book.

Daily recovery 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this book every day. It is wonderful to have daily recovery mediatations that are based on the Jewish calendar. I personally found the meditations for the month of Elul especially inspiring and relevant.

Editorial Review:

Recovery is a conscious choice from moment to moment, day in and day out. This helpful and healing book of affirmations and daily recovery meditations gives readers words to life by, throughout the annual cycle of holiday observances and special times of the Jewish calendar.

Great for Beginners 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I read this book from cover to cover, then began focusing on some of the different meditations, prayers and movements. This is a very easy way to start learning about Jewish meditation. This book doesn't bog you down, nor does it put too much on your plate at once. Also, a cassette tape is available from the publisher, that leads the prayers, movements and meditations. I plan to purchase that as well!

helping me play with movement and prayer 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is helping me play with movement and prayer. There are also great visualizations and discussions of healing. I also value the phrase-by-phrase translations / explanations of the traditional prayers.

truly excellent 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I was fortunate to discover this book while on vacation recently. This can be warmly recommended not only to members of the Jewish faith but also to Christians - like myself - and anyone who takes a serious interest in Judaism. It offers blessings and prayers for all the significant observances and celebrations of the Jewish liturgical calendar, as well as milestone events in Jewish life. I found the selected readings from the Psalms were heartwarming and inspired. Its overall presentation is exemplary. In spite of its relatively modest size, it is substantial.

Any open-minded and curious potential buyer should not hesitate to purchase this book.

Editorial Review:

This illustrated guide to prayers and blessings is a jewel for the Jewish home. Rabbi Michael Shire's diverse selection from such treasured texts as the Sabbath prayer book, the Haggadah, and the Talmud shares timeless words to commemorate the significant moments in our lives: the observances of the Jewish calendar; the rites of passage that mark the cycle of life; as well as the simple pleasures of the everyday. Gloriously adorned with illuminations from medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, both Ashkenazic and Sephardic in origin, these prayers and blessings (presented in both English and Hebrew) are supplemented by explanations that inspire a fresh understanding of the Jewish heritage. To Life! L'Chaim! is a rich celebration of art and wisdom that honors the traditions of the past and helps shape the future's path to faith.

Editorial Review:

My People's Prayer Book is a momentous seven-volume series that opens up the traditional Jewish prayer book (the Siddur) as a spiritual resource. Commentaries by 10 of today's most respected teachers, from all perspectives of the Jewish world, help worshippers and spiritual seekers understand the spiritual messages that make up the Siddur, while involving us in a personal dialogue with God, Jewish history and tradition through prayer.

Sometimes awe-striking, sometimes surprising, but always deeply spiritual, My People's Prayer Book is a gateway to understanding the riches the heritage of prayer has to offer us in our worship, and in our lives.

This third volume of the series explores the rich content and meaning of the P'sukei D'zimrah, the morning psalms that serve as the introduction to the larger prayer service. The P'sukei D'zimrah sets the tone and prepares the way for the daily transition from secular routine to the sacred act of communal prayer. Volume 3 helps us to appreciate this "prayer before the prayer" as a profoundly moving spiritual experience in its own right.

Vol. 3-P'sukei D'zimrah (Morning Psalms) features the authentic Hebrew text with a new translation designed to let people know exactly what the prayers say. Introductions tell the reader what to look for in the prayer service, as well as how to truly use the commentaries, to search for--and find--meaning in the prayer book. Commentaries from some of today's most eminent scholars and teachers from all movements of Judaism examine P'sukei D'zimrah from the perspectives of ancient Rabbis and modern theologians, as well as feminist, halakhic, medieval, linguistic, biblical, Chasidic, mystical, and historical perspectives.

Even those not yet familiar with the prayer book can appreciate the spiritual richness of the Amidah. My People's Prayer Book enables all worshippers, of any denomination, to encounter their own connection to 3,000 years of Jewish experience with the world and with God.

This stunning work, an empowering entryway to the spiritual revival of our times, enables all of us to claim our connection to the heritage of the traditional Jewish prayer book. It helps rejuvenate Jewish worship in today's world, and makes its power accessible to all.

Framed with beautifully designed Talmud-style pages, commentaries from many of today's most respected Jewish scholars from all movements of Judaism examine Birkhot Hashachar from the perspectives of ancient Rabbis and modern theologians, as well as feminist, halakhic, Talmudic, linguistic, biblical, Chasidic, mystical, and historical perspectives.

This fifth volume in the series examines the complexities of personal and public prayer in Birkhot Hashachar, the blessings and readings surrounding each act of awakening. The Morning Blessings begin the daily service by establishing our right to stand before God in all our imperfect humanity. Vol. 5 helps us to understand how this collection of short prayers and a call to study recognizes each new day: we awaken as individuals but quickly affirm our role in the covenant with God.

Vol. 5--Birkhot Hashachar (Morning Blessings) features the traditional Hebrew text with a new translation that lets people know exactly what the prayers say. Introductions explain what to look for in the prayer service, and how to truly use the commentaries to find meaning in the prayer book. A perfect way to end the day 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book about 6 months ago and I've rarely enjoyed an anthology more. There is a short (5-10 paragraph) discussion on some aspect of religion and spirituality for each day of the year.

Although the book specifically discusses these topics from a Jewish perspective, the focus really isn't that narrow. I gave a copy to a Christian friend who loved it too.

Each reflection is a perfect way to wind down from a busy day and change your focus from an outward, task-oriented mindset to more of a relaxed, reflective mood.

Editorial Review:

A daily inspirational companion of comfort, reassurance and hope, grounded in the wisdom and strength of Judaism. To help you start each day of the year on a positive note, there is an inspiring quote from a Jewish source and a brief, striking reflection on it through which you can gain new understanding and perspective.

With a wealth of contributions by over 40 respected and inspiring spiritual leaders from all parts of the Jewish community, this lovely book will help you start the day with a powerful positive attitude.
