Editorial Review:

My People's Prayer Book is a momentous seven-volume series that opens up the traditional Jewish prayer book (the Siddur) as a spiritual resource. Commentaries by 10 of today's most respected teachers, from all perspectives of the Jewish world, help worshippers and spiritual seekers understand the spiritual messages that make up the Siddur, while involving us in a personal dialogue with God, Jewish history and tradition through prayer.

Sometimes awe-striking, sometimes surprising, but always deeply spiritual, My People's Prayer Book is a gateway to understanding the riches the heritage of prayer has to offer us in our worship, and in our lives.

This third volume of the series explores the rich content and meaning of the P'sukei D'zimrah, the morning psalms that serve as the introduction to the larger prayer service. The P'sukei D'zimrah sets the tone and prepares the way for the daily transition from secular routine to the sacred act of communal prayer. Volume 3 helps us to appreciate this "prayer before the prayer" as a profoundly moving spiritual experience in its own right.

Vol. 3-P'sukei D'zimrah (Morning Psalms) features the authentic Hebrew text with a new translation designed to let people know exactly what the prayers say. Introductions tell the reader what to look for in the prayer service, as well as how to truly use the commentaries, to search for--and find--meaning in the prayer book. Commentaries from some of today's most eminent scholars and teachers from all movements of Judaism examine P'sukei D'zimrah from the perspectives of ancient Rabbis and modern theologians, as well as feminist, halakhic, medieval, linguistic, biblical, Chasidic, mystical, and historical perspectives.

Even those not yet familiar with the prayer book can appreciate the spiritual richness of the Amidah. My People's Prayer Book enables all worshippers, of any denomination, to encounter their own connection to 3,000 years of Jewish experience with the world and with God.

Editorial Review:

This stunning work, an empowering entryway to the spiritual revival of our times, enables all of us to claim our connection to the heritage of the traditional Jewish prayer book. It helps rejuvenate Jewish worship in today's world, and makes its power accessible to all.

Framed with beautifully designed Talmud-style pages, commentaries from many of today's most respected Jewish scholars from all movements of Judaism examine Birkhot Hashachar from the perspectives of ancient Rabbis and modern theologians, as well as feminist, halakhic, Talmudic, linguistic, biblical, Chasidic, mystical, and historical perspectives.

This fifth volume in the series examines the complexities of personal and public prayer in Birkhot Hashachar, the blessings and readings surrounding each act of awakening. The Morning Blessings begin the daily service by establishing our right to stand before God in all our imperfect humanity. Vol. 5 helps us to understand how this collection of short prayers and a call to study recognizes each new day: we awaken as individuals but quickly affirm our role in the covenant with God.

Vol. 5--Birkhot Hashachar (Morning Blessings) features the traditional Hebrew text with a new translation that lets people know exactly what the prayers say. Introductions explain what to look for in the prayer service, and how to truly use the commentaries to find meaning in the prayer book. Commentaries from eminent scholars and teachers from all movements of Judaism examine Birkhot Hashachar from the viewpoints of ancient Rabbis and modern theologians, as well as a myriad of other perspectives.

Even those not yet familiar with the prayer book can appreciate the spiritual richness of Birkhot Hashachar. My People's Prayer Book enables all worshipers, of any denomination, to create their own connection to 3,000 years of Jewish experience with the world and with God.

Kabbalah 365 is a unique collection of rare Jewish mystery and understanding. People from all walks of life are finding their paths illuminated within the Kabbalah. Each selected reading, one for every day of the yearly cycle, encourages honest contemplation, true inspiration, and deep reflection. Likewise, when the time is right for you, you'll be arriving at your destination - no sooner, no later. In the meantime, make sure you are on board. If you are rubbing two sticks together and are having difficulty lighting a fire, move to another place and try again. Likewise, if you are having difficulty in the place where you are, shift to another place. Experience the vastness and riches of the Kabbalah with Kabbalah 365, which ably preserves the integrity of the original texts, some translated here for the first time, and renders insights in easy-to-understand language.

This fourth volume of the series unfolds the many layers of meaning in Seder K'riat Hatorah, the ritual and prayers surrounding the communal reading of Torah. A perfect way to end the day 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book about 6 months ago and I've rarely enjoyed an anthology more. There is a short (5-10 paragraph) discussion on some aspect of religion and spirituality for each day of the year.

Although the book specifically discusses these topics from a Jewish perspective, the focus really isn't that narrow. I gave a copy to a Christian friend who loved it too.

Each reflection is a perfect way to wind down from a busy day and change your focus from an outward, task-oriented mindset to more of a relaxed, reflective mood.

Editorial Review:

A daily inspirational companion of comfort, reassurance and hope, grounded in the wisdom and strength of Judaism. To help you start each day of the year on a positive note, there is an inspiring quote from a Jewish source and a brief, striking reflection on it through which you can gain new understanding and perspective.

With a wealth of contributions by over 40 respected and inspiring spiritual leaders from all parts of the Jewish community, this lovely book will help you start the day with a powerful positive attitude.

Exploring the Mystery of Prayer 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful, wonderful reader in Hasidic perspectives on prayer. The book blossoms with deep insights into the spiritual dynamic between God and humans. Please consider the following:

"A father has a young child whom he greatly loves. Even though the child has hardly learned to speak, his father takes pleasure in listening to his words." (p. 102)

There is something both bold and humbling about and such a perspective on prayer. God is not only King, but Father as well. The Infinite One is both large and small, far and near.

Many of the different dynamics of prayer are explored in this work, each in its own section, and everything is referenced at the end of the book. The book opens with an academic essay that provides a good context for the Hasidic exploration of the vast sea of prayer, the experience of union with the Divine Presence (p. 80). As with most readers, any background knowledge of Hasidism is helpful, but at the same time not necessary to have in order to be touched by the wisdom of these mystics.

I think, though, that this book needs to be approached as an open door to the myster of prayer. Rather than just being read, it should be tested: to approach God as a child who is unable to speak is a humbling thing. To persist, nonetheless, and draw close to God as God draws us and pulls us close is to experience God's love. The reader of this book will have some far reaching light as s/he travels and progresses down the path of such prayer.

Editorial Review:

The power of prayer for spiritual renewal and personal transformation is at the core of all religious traditions. Through the advice, parables, and explanations presented in this book, the Hasidic masters of the past speak to our own attempts to find meaning in prayer, and pierce to the heart of the modern reader s search for God.

Excellent Children's Siddur for 1st Graders On Up 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Great Siddur for the younger ones in your family or congregation - I serve as Librarian for Congregation Beth Israel in Malden, MA, and one of my first acquisitions upon accepting the position was a copy of this prayerbook for review, and 6 more soon afterward. While your young ones won't be able to follow along throughout a complete service with the Artscroll Children's Siddur, they not only will find age-appropriate commonly used brachas and prayers, but engaging illustrations and explanations to capture their attention during services, perhaps helping them to focus on either davening or learning how to daven, as opposed to running around, fidgeting in their seats, or leafing through more secular titles. Highly recommended, although I would think the "4 and up" age-rating is really only relevant when a parent or teacher is working with a child - it seems more appropriate to gauge it for 6 years olds and up when used by kids on their own (personal opinion).

Editorial Review:

Your youngsters are 4,5,6 years old. They are just beginning to daven and you want them to enjoy the Siddur experience because you know that if they love it when they are little, they will appreciate davening more and more as they get older and more mature. This Siddur was compiled by Shmuel Blitz, in consultation with master teachers. It has the basic prayers with which children begin their lives. The translations and instructions are on their level. And theyll be fascinated by all the Did you Knows and Closer Looks. (So will you!) And Tova Katzs illustrations! They are lovely and enticing. Theyll keep children coming back to this Siddur again and again. We know it will get heavy, heavy use -- thats why this Siddur has a strong binding and a stain-proof cover. If you have a child, a grandchild, a niece or nephew, or you want to see a big smile on a little face get them this Siddur. It is great investment in a youngsters future!

Rabbi Wolpe is a genius at distilling the deepest thoughts into memorable, poetic, quintessential passages, perfect for spiritual folks of all faiths. I always feel enlightened, uplifted, and inspired to write my own journeys into questions of faith. This is a book to be read in small doses, throughout the years, not to sit down and read in one sitting; it is a treasure to revisit throughout life.
