Complete Idiot's Guide to Hebrew Scriptures 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

For someone who wants basic information about Hebrew Scriptures, this book is a good starting point. However, I did find typographical errors and even a bit of misinformation (re the matter of Obadiah being the shortest book in Scriptures and on a previous page, it had been erroneously stated that Habakkuk was the shortest book). Anyway, the book was not over my head, nor was it too simplified. It's a good way to whet one's appetite and understand Hebrew writings. Both Jews and non-Jews can appreciate this volume.

Editorial Review:

A revelation for both Jews and Christians.

The Jewish Scriptures, known as the Tanakh, comprise three parts—the Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings. This book reveals the Bible according to the Jewish faith— from Adam and Eve and Joseph the Dreamer in the Book of Genesis; to Moses’s receipt of the Ten Commandments in the Book of Deuteronomy; to the Books of Psalms and Proverbs, the Song of Songs, and the stories of Ruth and Esther.

• This is a great introduction for both Christians and Jews who are curious about the differences between Hebrew Scripture and the Old Testament
• There is virtually no current book written for a lay audience that covers the information in this volume
• Chapters include a theological overview of each Book of the Tanakh, notes on the author(s) of each Book, a brief history, and discussions of major themes and events

Editorial Review:

This stunning work, an empowering entryway to the spiritual revival of our times, enables all of us to claim our connection to the heritage of the traditional Jewish prayer book. It helps rejuvenate Jewish worship in today's world, and makes its power accessible to all.

Framed with beautifully designed Talmud-style pages, commentaries from many of today's most respected Jewish scholars from all movements of Judaism examine Birkhot Hashachar from the perspectives of ancient Rabbis and modern theologians, as well as feminist, halakhic, Talmudic, linguistic, biblical, Chasidic, mystical, and historical perspectives.

This fifth volume in the series examines the complexities of personal and public prayer in Birkhot Hashachar, the blessings and readings surrounding each act of awakening. The Morning Blessings begin the daily service by establishing our right to stand before God in all our imperfect humanity. Vol. 5 helps us to understand how this collection of short prayers and a call to study recognizes each new day: we awaken as individuals but quickly affirm our role in the covenant with God.

Vol. 5--Birkhot Hashachar (Morning Blessings) features the traditional Hebrew text with a new translation that lets people know exactly what the prayers say. Introductions explain what to look for in the prayer service, and how to truly use the commentaries to find meaning in the prayer book. Commentaries from eminent scholars and teachers from all movements of Judaism examine Birkhot Hashachar from the viewpoints of ancient Rabbis and modern theologians, as well as a myriad of other perspectives.

Even those not yet familiar with the prayer book can appreciate the spiritual richness of Birkhot Hashachar. My People's Prayer Book enables all worshipers, of any denomination, to create their own connection to 3,000 years of Jewish experience with the world and with God.

Editorial Review:

This inspiring, informative guide shows us how we can use the often overlooked time at the end of each day to enhance our spiritual, physical and psychological wellbeing.

Each chapter takes a new look at traditional Jewish prayers and what they have to teach us about the spiritual aspects of preparing for the end of the day, and of sleep itself. Drawing on Kabbalistic teachings, prayer, the Bible and midrash, the authors enrich our understanding of traditional bedtime preparations, and show how, by including them in our bedtime rituals, we can gain insight into our lives and access the spiritual enrichment the world of dreams has to offer.

Clear illustrations and diagrams, step-by-step meditations, visualization techniques and exercise suggestions for fully integrating body, mind and spirit show us the way to:

Hashkivenu—Freeing ourselves from spiritual impediments
Hareni Mochel—Praying for forgiveness
Shema—Asking for acceptance and understanding
Bircat Kohanim—Finding comfort in protection
Hamapil—Thanking God for sleep and illumination

A Reaction to Rabbi' Hertz's Translation of the Pirke Aboth 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Coming from a Christian background, but interested in all of humankind's rich legacy of scripture, I began to run across quotes from and references to the Pirke Abothe or "Sayings of the Fathers". Eventually, I found this singular book, a tractate of the Mishnah of our Jewish brothers and sisters.

One cannot help but be struck in reading the basic text by the reverence for the Holy, the love of people, and the struggle to share and instill this reverence and love in all of us. But this unique rendering is threaded with warm and deep illustrations by Michoel Muchnik and appealing and penetrating interpretations by the translator Rabbi Joseph H. Hertz. It's a book to own and cherish and to share with your friends.

Editorial Review:

To help men and women from all faiths be more successful at reducing stress, overcoming procrastination, resolving family tensions, and deepening your sense of meaning and purpose, Dr. Leonard Felder has described and explained seven remarkable prayers that have proven effective for hundreds of his counseling clients over the past 20 years.

These prayers and meditations can help enormously even if you're not very religious or if you struggle with doubts and uncertainty about faith or belief. Each chapter describes the history, mystical meanings, various translations, and psychological benefits of some extremely profound prayers that can assist you in your daily life and relationships.

The author, Leonard Felder, Ph.D., has written 8 books that have sold over 950,000 copies and been translated into 14 languages. He is a licensed psychologist in private practice who has been studying, teaching and writing about the connection between spirituality and personal growth for many years. He has appeared on over 180 radio and TV interviews and won awards for his writing and for his involvement in human relations programs designed to combat racism, sexism, homophobia and religious prejudice. He and his wife have been together for 20 years and they live with their 8 year old son in the Los Angeles area.

Larry Dossey, MD, author of REINVENTING MEDICINE and HEALING WORDS, says, "The word is out in modern medicine: prayer can change your life and contribute to your health, creativity and fulfillment. Dr. Leonard Felder provides us with practical, down-to-earth guidance about bringing the spiritual practice of prayer into the everyday. Jewish wisdom, which is his focus, is universal and applicable to people of all faiths and traditions. At a time when prejudice and intolerance threaten our world, we need this more than ever."

Lisa Schiffman, author of GENERATION J, comments, "I don't even pray, I thought, so why should I read this book? Yet Leonard Felder moved me--a reluctant audience at first--and opened me to the idea that prayer could have a place in my life. I even tried out the spiritual techniques in Chapter Three to resolve a conflict I was having with a loved one and they worked beautifully. This book is a gift and I feel richer for having learned from the author's compassion, intelligence and honesty."

Harold Kushner, author of WHEN BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE, says, "What a blessing it is to introduce someone to the power of prayer, and this lovely book does that so well. SEVEN PRAYERS THAT CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE is a splendid and profoundly thoughtful book. I recommend it highly."

If you or someone you know wants to explore the connection between spirituality and personal growth, this easy-to-read book is highly recommended by a variety of experts. No matter what your background, you will find it inspiring, thought-provoking and very helpful.

A Prayer Book for Infertility 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Being Jewish, I discovered there are few prayers for a woman or man to cite for infertility. This book is wonderful!

It contains many prayers to be cited thoroughout the entire infertility process. My husband and I both use it. We even take it with us to the Fertility Specialist's office. The book contains prayers to cite for waiting in a doctor's office; prior to examinations; for procedures; for conception; and, especially there are prayers to be cited at Shabbat and Holidays.

I also love it because it relates inferility back to the Bible (Sarah and Rebecca)and even reviews rituals that have been utilized. It is truly helping us through this difficult time in our lives.

Editorial Review:

Enables those frustrated and pained in their attempts at parenthood to mourn the loss of a pregnancy or infertility through the prayers, rituals, and meditations of the Jewish tradition.

This new edition--updated and expanded--includes guided questions and pages on which to add personal reflections of your own emotions and experiences along the path toward parenting.

My People’s Prayer Book is a momentous eight-volume series that opens up the traditional Jewish prayer book (the siddur) as a spiritual resource. Commentaries by respected teachers from all perspectives of the Jewish world provide the spiritual images that make up the siddur.

The seventh volume in the series explores the typical Ashkenazi-style table liturgy for Shabbat, along with a broad range of z’mirot (table songs) that reflect the rich diversity of Jewish practice. It illuminates the meanings behind the traditional blessings for ushering in Shabbat, as well as the rituals and ceremony for concluding the holy day.

My People’s Prayer Book: Volume 7—Shabbat at Home features the traditional Hebrew text with a new translation that lets you know exactly what the prayers say. Introductions explain what to look for in the prayers, and how to use the commentaries to find meaning in the prayer book. Commentaries from eminent scholars and teachers from all movements of Judaism examine Shabbat at home from the viewpoints of ancient Rabbis and modern theologians, as well as a myriad of other perspectives.
