Informative and entertaining - it earns its status as a classic 5 out of 5 stars.

In the weeks before the election, as the financial crisis spun ever farther out of control and the pundits' shrieks grew ever more shrill, I browsed through "Popular Delusions.." and found solace. Charles Mackay's extraordinary survey of the various manifestations of mass hysteria throughout history cannot help but offer perspective. He reminds us that, no matter how battily crazy a particular fad might seem, it's already been done by our ancestors. There is truly nothing new under the sun; the catalog of human daftness, though entertainingly long and varied, is nonetheless finite.

It's all here in Mackay's book, laid out with a kind of detached amusement that leaves no doubt as to where the author stands.

Market craziness got you down? It may cheer you up to read about the Mississippi scheme that wrought such havoc on the French treasury in the 18th century, while the South Sea Bubble engulfed the English, or to refresh your memory on Holland's infamous Tulipomanic excesses.

Three of the longer sections of the book are devoted to alchemy, the crusades, and witch-hunting. By the accumulation of examples and anecdotes across the geographical and historical spectrum (i.e. from different times and places), Mackay demonstrates that human folly remains a constant down the ages. He doesn't beat us over the head with this message - he simply assembles the data, with no overt analysis, and leaves us to draw the inevitable conclusion.

Most of your favorite targets are discussed in the book: eschatological prophets, fortune tellers, spiritualists, mediums, and the good Dr Mesmer and his imitators. The anecdotes are often hilarious, even more so because of Mackay's tone of dry amusement. But he knows when to administer the coup de grace, as for example, when he shows how easy it is to attribute post hoc meaning to the notoriously vague quatrains of Nostradamus. One can only wish that the folks at The History Channel would read these sections and take them to heart.

Shorter chapters are interspersed on topics as diverse as the wave of spouse-poisoning that swept through the courts of Europe in the 17th century, the influence of politics and religion on men's hair and beard styles, haunted houses, popular admiration of great thieves, duels, relics, and the sudden rise and fall of certain catchphrases or songs in big cities. (Yadda yadda yadda, anyone?)

This book is ideal for browsing. It's all pretty interesting stuff, presented clearly and wittily. You can learn quite a bit and enjoy yourself doing so - what's not to like?

Its classic status is well-deserved.

Editorial Review:

A complete repackaging of the classic work about grand-scale madness, major schemes, and bamboozlement--and the universal human susceptibility to all three. This informative, funny collection encompasses a broad range of manias and deceptions, from witch burnings to the Great Crusades to the prophecies of Nostradamus.

3.5 stars. Good mystery with interesting characters. 3 out of 5 stars.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
I usually don't care for most mysteries but I liked this one. I enjoyed the story. There was an interesting collection of characters. I was intrigued with the local police and medical examiner who did not like and would not help Aidan. I wasn't sure if this was because he was an outsider or some other reason. I was interested in Aidan's search for knowledge about the two bones he found. I liked the way he followed his hunches and leads and the resulting information. This did not feel like another "churned out book". This is the first in the Flynn Brothers trilogy.

I did not like the author's cliffhanger style of writing. Many authors do this, and I have never liked it. An example follows. Page 12: In 1863 a rapist is chasing Fiona. She runs out onto the balcony screaming. Her husband Sloan is nearby outside. "Raising his gun to his shoulder, Sloan started to run." The next sentence switches to a present day scene with Sheila (for 3 ½ pages). She is being followed in a cemetery. She is pushed. "And then she screamed, because she was falling." The next sentence switches to a different character, Brendan, in a nearby town, back in 1863. Finally, on page 19, the author returns to the Sloan/Fiona scene and tells what happened next. This style of writing annoys me in the same way TV commercials do. The scenes were suspenseful and interesting within themselves. They didn't need the artificial suspense of stopping at the worst point. If the writing is good, it doesn't need artificial excitement. There were a few of these cliffhangers in the beginning of the book and many of them in the last half of the book. I am fine with a cliffhanger such as someone is killed and we don't know who is doing it. Then much later in the book, the killer's identity is revealed. It is the interrupting of a scene, for a delay of 3 to 5 pages before finishing it, which bothers me.

Ghosts from the past might be communicating with present day people. Kendall reads tarot cards and has a gift shop in New Orleans. She was friends with Amelia who lived on the plantation. Amelia died and left the plantation to the three Flynn brothers from Florida who didn't know she was a relative. The three brothers come to the plantation and oversee repairs and improvements. Human bones are found on the property. The brothers are private investigators. Aidan investigates the bones and believes a serial killer may be involved.

Editorial Review:

The Flynn brothers have inherited more than a New Orleans plantation. They've inherited a ghostly presence… and a long-kept secret.

Aidan Flynn, a private investigator and eldest of the Flynn brothers, scoffs at the haunted-house rumors—especially since Kendall Montgomery, a tarot card reader who has been living in the mansion, is the one to tell him the tale of a woman in white. But when he finds a human bone on the grounds and another by the river, Aidan delves into the dark history of the Flynn plantation.

Forced together to uncover the truth, Aidan and Kendall realize that a serial killer whose victims seem to vanish into thin air has long been at work…and that their own fates are about to be sealed forever unless they believe in the unbelievable.

Way of the Self-absorbed warrior. 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Your life will be better if you save the money you would have spent on this book. If you like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Barney the Purple Dinosaur, this book may be for you. Yeah, this book changed my life.........for the worse. The 6 hours of mindless, self-absorbed fantasy drivel in audio form nearly sent me looking for a hanging tree. I stuck it out to the bitter end hoping this story would just END. I didn't care if the guy got hit by a train or got VD from one of his numerous trysts or if he ever figured ANYTHING out. I guess this crap sells: I bought it.

If you want to change your life forever, look elsewhere for guidance. If you want to be a divorced, self-absorbed naval gazer, this book is a good guide.

Editorial Review:

Readers join Dan as he learns to live as a peaceful warrior. This international bestseller conveys piercing truths and humorous wisdom, speaking directly to the universal quest for happiness.

Laughable 1 out of 5 stars.

Laughably badly written, plotted & researched. Cereal boxes have better character construction, spiritual insights and dialog. Makes you feel embarrassed for the writer and anybody who takes this 'book' (using the term loosely) seriously.

Editorial Review:

You have never read a book like this before -- a book that comes along once in a lifetime to change lives forever.

In the rain forests of Peru, an ancient manuscript has been discovered. Within its pages are 9 key insights into life itself -- insights each human being is predicted to grasp sequentially; one insight, then another, as we move toward a completely spiritual culture on Earth. Drawing on ancient wisdom, it tells you how to make connections among the events happening in your life right now and lets you see what is going to happen to you in the years to come. The story it tells is a gripping one of adventure and discovery, but it is also a guidebook that has the power to crystallize your perceptions of why you are where you are in life and to direct your steps with a new energy and optimisim as you head into tomorrow.

What I Saw In This Book 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Well first of all, God has already inspired a book for us 2000 years ago, called the Bible which was written and dictated in the hearts of man. God didn't speak to anyone audibly, nor did he push a mans pen across a page like satan did in this book using a deceived author.

This book has many satanic elements and tones. If the author really heard from God, it certainly wasn't the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It's funny how satan wants to be God so bad that he literally manifested himself as God in this book. He clearly attempts to influence the masses of unaware people by flip flopping around the bible and twisting scriptures to make them mean what will lure people away from the truth. The book is full of contradictions and many things taken out of context.

Would God tell us that there is no sin? when in fact he sent his son to die to save us from it? Would God use man to write a book that clearly speaks against his own word in another book? Ah, the answer would be "NO".

It is obvious that this author has probably never seen the inside of a bible and is not grounded in the truth of Gods word, because if he was he would have known that the voices he heard couldnt have been that of God.

This book is a fine example of the New Age doctrine that is now deceiving millions and an even greater example as to why we need to be grounded in the Word of God.

Whats even more obvious to me is that in the book, satan jumps around so much that it literally confuses people. He never makes a clear point using one sentence, which will confuse most people and keep them from noticing his deceptive acrobatics.

When the book indicated that we shouldnt be reading the bible, thats when I tossed it in the garbage, where it belongs. People be careful, get grounded in the Word of God. Don't go on other peoples experiences or take thier word for it. Get your own revelation from God, his inspired Word and pray that his spirit will reveal the truth and just be open for it and receptive.

Editorial Review:

Conversations with God Book 1 began a series that has been changing millions of lives for more than ten years. Finally, the bestselling series is now a movie, starring Henry Czerny (The Pink Panther and Clear and Present Danger) and Ingrid Boulting (The Last Tycoon). Produced and directed by Stephen Simon (producer of Somewhere in Time and What Dreams May Come) and distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films and Fox Home Entertainment, the theatrical release is set for October 27, 2006. The movie is the true account of Walsch (played by Cierny), who went from an unemployed homeless man to an "accidental spiritual messenger" and author of the bestselling book

Editorial Review:

A belief that the ancients held unusual scientific knowledge, of which only fragments remain today, was held by many great philosophers and scientists who participated in the "scientific revolution". Though research by these men led to great discovery, many were convinced that they were merely scratching the surface of an immense but lost pristine knowledge (prisca sapientia) somehow reflected in the architecture and remains of ancient civilizations. In "Temple at the Center of Time Investigations of Sacred Dimension, Revealed in Prophecy, the Temple of Jerusalem, and the Ark of the Covenant, from the works of Isaac Newton", David Flynn uncovers what is sure to be heralded as one of the greatest discoveries of all time. Many books have investigated whether Newton believed that an original pure knowledge existed. Some conclude that he did in fact search for it, but that is the whole of their investigation. A few have written that Newton actually discovered something and try to fit his existing research into a prisca sapientia of their own design, claiming his beliefs fit modern realms of philosophy or eastern religions, but these speculations are not upheld by the body of his work. Although Newton had solved riddles of space, time, gravity, light and invented mathematics to predict the motion of objects, this was not the priscia sapienta. Since the time of Newton, no one has revealed the true form and nature of the original knowledge, or from whence it came until now. For the first time in history, "Temple at the Center of Time" uncovers what Newton was looking for and, in so doing, proves that pivotal events in history are unquestionably connected in time and space to Jerusalem. Newton didn't know it. The key was right in front of him.

Editorial Review:

Everyone loves a good ghost story. Perhaps the human fascination with the supernatural stems from the fact that most of us, at some point in our lives, have experienced something we couldn't quite explain. From a very young age James Van Praagh was aware of a dimension that most of us cannot see, and he has dedicated his life to explaining it to the rest of us. Ghosts Among Us takes us on an incredible journey into the spirit world that brings to light one of our greatest mysteries—what happens to us after we die?

Van Praagh, the New York Times bestselling author and co-executive producer of the CBS series The Ghost Whisperer, shares his knowledge and life experience about ghosts, a subject that can seem to many of us both bizarre and terrifying. But when the world beyond is explained fully by an experienced guide, dismissal and apprehension can be turned into knowledge and inspiration. With incredible true ghost stories and surprising details about how ghosts actively participate in our lives, Van Praagh challenges us to question our perceptions and shows us how we can live more fully through understanding the world of spirits. Including eerily accurate readings, the author's development as a medium, and detailed how-to information, Ghosts Among Us is an all-encompassing guide to the supernatural.

I like to find Christian authors for enlightenment combined with entertainment. I have not read any of Ted Dekker other books; however, I have read almost all of Peretti and was disappointed from this book to the point where I would actually write a review. Finished the book like a bad movie just to get it over with.

Editorial Review:

A mind-bending supernatural thriller from the creators of This Present Darkness and Showdown.

Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker - two of the most acclaimed writers of supernatural thrillers - have joined forces for the first time to craft a story unlike any you've ever read. Enter House - where you'll find yourself thrown into a killer's deadly game in which the only way to win is to lose...and the only way out is in.

The stakes of the game become clear when a tin can is tossed into the house with rules scrawled on it. Rules that only a madman - or worse - could have written. Rules that make no sense yet must be followed.

One game. Seven players. Three rules. Game ends at dawn.

Deep and Rich with possibilities for mankind 5 out of 5 stars.

I read a friend's copy of this book and subsequently sent a copy to my son who is in law school. I found it enlightening and hopeful. I am an artist and a therapist and am familiar with many of the concepts of the various writings.

We live in a rapidly changing time. We all can value coming more from our hearts than our heads in our relationships with each other and with ourselves. The answer is in staying in alignment with Source and returning to this alignment as quickly as we can realize we have strayed away.

According to the Abraham work (Abraham-Hicks), briefly mentioned in this book, our emotions are key to knowing of our alignment with Source or the lack of it.

I am hopeful for what 2012 will bring, possibly the dawning of a new age - of kindness, love and consideration for all.

May you be at peace.

Carol Suter, Psy.D.

Wow...this book is perfect in every way 5 out of 5 stars.

I just bought this book in cd version and I'm LOVING it. I'm getting over a Power Of Now trip that I had been on which basically involved thinking that the present is all there is and nothing else matters. I actually owed this book and threw it away along with many others because of my spiritual breakthrough with Echarts work.

This book is linking up unseen events and really confirms my feelings of the unknown. Things just seem to work out for me and my life gets better and better because I'm going against the grain. Thought is very powerful...I had thought that it was useless to a large degree, but now I'm back on track. This book is beyond valuable...worth more than its weight in gold.

Please get this book and allow your mind to soak in the wisdom and guidance.

Editorial Review:

In Dr. Wayne Dyer’s public television special, taped live in front of a thousand fans in Boston’s historic theater district, he transforms conventional thinking about making things happen in our lives into a profound understanding of how each person possesses the infinite potential and power to co-create the life he or she desires.

To accomplish this, Dr. Dyer takes the audience through a journey into the seven faces of intention: (1) creativity, (2) kindness; (3) love, (4) beauty, (5) expansiveness, (6) abundance, and (7) receptivity.

Throughout the program, Dr. Dyer illustrates his points with signature stories that move the audience to tears—as well as abundant laughter.
