Mostly worth the money.... 4 out of 5 stars.

Someone at a bookstore put me on to Patricia Briggs and she's mainly the reason I picked this one up. On the whole I was happy with it, but only because I knew going in what to expect. As some of the other reviewers have said, at least three of the stories are partials or starter stories with the full story in novel form to come. After saying that, two of those stories could really 'almost' stand alone in that they meet and fall in love with a mate. THe full novels (and I can only speak for Briggs story as that's the only one I've read) just extend out the rest of their story.

Okay, first off...despite the title and the cover art, not all of these books are about werewolves. Maybe I'm the only one who though they would be...anyway, they deal with werewolves, hellhounds, dragon/fae and a group of people who get their power from the moon.

Brigg's story was enjoyable, mainly, I think because I'm already familiar with her world and it's characters. This story is the beginnings of a new shoot-off series from her main "Mercy" books. It deals with the werewolf pack she grew up in. This story is Charles' and his mate. These werewolves are a mixture brutal (but without any gory details) and elegance. I mean that in the sense that Brigg writes them without the language and crudeness that are often found in paranormals nowadays. It's a good teaser story and the book (Cry Wolf) was pretty good too.

Wilks' story was interesting and could pretty much stand alone, though I think it's also part of a series. The characters were likeable and the story was okay until the twist with the murderer. It was a little hard for me to change gears. The romance was good, the world building was similiar to other authors worlds (paranormals out in the open but human groups resenting and hateful, religious persecution, that sort of thing). All in all, worth the read.

Chance's story was also a good read and could stand alone. I'm not a big fan of Fae stories, they tend to creep me out, but this one was well done and didn't have any of that drugged out, party all the time and steal babies that other fae stories do. I liked the set-up of different groups of fae and other magical creatures. I actually liked both the main characters, they had a sense of humor and the hero, while being very 'manly', could laugh at himself. Don't be put off by the auction scene in the beginning. The villains, while having bad intentions, never quite got to that creepy, evil villains often have. They seemed more comedy villains to me.

The last story was really, really odd. partly because, unlike the other two, this one was an erotic story. Beware of authors that only use one name!!!! Basically, the main character is a queeen of these moon people. Previous queens have put men and women out to stud to increase her power. No one has the right to choose their own mate-or even if they get to marry. What put me off was this queen is basically skanky. She's got multiple lovers( one love scene was 15 PAGES!! That's right-15!). Two thirds of this 'story' was her having sex with multiple partners. Not much of a story, actually. I have to admit I just skimmed through this one. It starts out with her mourning one dead lover and then a few pages later she's met up with another lover and is happily running through the forest naked. Yeah. It's hard for me to connect with a woman who can't really emotionally connect with a man enough to make a commitment to one of them.

So...to sum up...if you're looking for complete stories that stand alone-only one of them really does that. If you're looking for starter stories to give you a sense of an authors series, than this is a good place to start. Read the first three, skip the last (you'll thank me).

Dangerously entertaining 5 out of 5 stars.

This book gets right into the story, doesn't have any whining at all and has a good amount of action. I highly recommend this book.

Terrible 1 out of 5 stars.

The plot was boring, the dialogue was cheesy, the characters were flat as a board. I've read my share of bad paranormal books but this one takes the cake. Stay away.

Tempting Danger 5 out of 5 stars.

i really liked this book. the people in it "came" alive for me.

it was all the important thing a book should have, danger, romance, family, suspense, and plot twists just to keep you guessing. in this book, expect the unexpected.

with three book in the series i found that it is necessary to read them in order (don't do as i do).

pick the up, read them and tell us what you think.

Too much of the wrong thing. 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Cullen Seabourne, lone wolf no more with friends and a clan, has found comfort and great sex in the arms of Cynna Weaver, Finder and a true skeptic at heart. But when Gnome representatives from Edge, a parallel world that's a 180 from Dis, pop out in a fountain in a DC mall, the real motives begin to unravel. And the goad to get Cynna to say yes without thinking is the revelation that her father, Daniel Weaver, didn't leave her and her drunken mother, but fell through into Edge.

What the Gnomes want is Cynna and Lilly to retrieve a powerful, and stolen, Medallion that controls the magical inertia in Edge. Without a proper holder, it's just chaos and war. And the gnomes believe only they can manage that power. Initially, the goal is to have Cynna Find and use Lilly's immunity to magic to take it, because, the Medallion is kind of alive and can eat its wearer, or turn them psychotic. But Lilly can't follow through because of the mate bond, which is still a secret. But the Edge reps have a trick under their sleeves as well, which backfires. Instead of just Lilly and Cynna and the Edge reps, it's Cynna, Cullen, Reuben, two gov't suites, Gan, Steve Timms and the reps from Edge fall through. And during a time of darkness, what the Edge people refer to as the Night Season.

Which was really a metaphor for Cynna's inability to 'see the light of truth' about her feelings for Cullen, being destined to be the next Rhej, her dad not being so dead-beat, being pregnant and acknowledging it as a person and not out of a sense of religious obligation, and especially, about herself. Midway, we come to find that none of the earthlings can return home until the Medallion is found because it takes a lot of power to open a gate and the Gnomes refuse. And thus, a who can and can't handle the Medallion takes up a great deal of the plot, and also introduces the Faeries, who covet the Medallion. It's a lot of talking and explaining in general.

Juxtaposed and equally uneventful, were two new characters, a Sidhe by name of Nathan Hunter, some sort of Hellhound of the Winter Queen in Faerie land. And his lover, a Gifted human, Kai, who can't control her dangerous Gift. She also has a familiar, a type of feline, Dell, that rings similar to Pullman's daemens. Their role is not really explained and for the, thankfully, brief chapters of them, you're not sure what their purpose is, if at all, though in the end, they end up helping the Earth gang.

The purpose for the journey, the political or magical happenings are usually the backbone to all the other books, with the romance being secondary. Which is fine, to a point, but there are no thrills, a few eyebrow raising, and not always in a good way. The emotional arch of Cynna and Cullen is flat, sprinkled with some cliche dialogue, a few reveals about their past that's not developed very well, and the romance, all of it is not very believable, made more so by a strategically placed 'jealousy' scene that comes more forced than amusing or angsty. In the last chapter everything Cynna was rejecting, she finally accepts in a fairy-tale ending. What irks me is the whole issue with Cynna's dad, who is not at all utilized. His only purpose to be in the book is to get Cynna in the same room with the Gnomes. There are some very brief ponderings about how she felt about it then nothing. She gets over it PDQ. The character least forced and most endearing was Gan, but she alone can't carry a problematic plot with uninspiring characters.

In terms of it being part of a series, it doesn't fit in it at all. You could read this without knowing about the others since there is very little of the Lupi element in it [which I missed and expected more of but alas, no] and Wilks gives several recaps from each book. In fact, I might have liked this one better if I hadn't read the other three.

So. That's it. That's the story in a couple of brief paragraphs and you didn't miss much. And I am somewhat surprised by the good reviews. This new world, while creative and well planned, I had to convince myself to keep reading because Wilks delivered so well in Book 3. I had hopes that the end would make me realize it was worth the read. It's not, just the same old stuff.

Editorial Review:

Lupine sorcerer Cullen Seabourne and FBI Agent Cynna Weaver are just coming to terms with having a baby, when they are lured to another realm where magic is commonplace and night never ends. Their only way home lies in tracking down a missing medallion-one also sought by powerful beings who will do anything to claim it.

This one will make you a believer. 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Slap me silly or stuff my mouth with soap. I am so eating my words after having read this one...

So okay, 1 & 2 were, at times, frustrating to read, and getting used to the characters and Wilks' style could get trying, at times. In the end...totally worth it in this third installment, which ties everything--from plotting to characters to explanations--so well, I was marveled. And struck dumb.

As things stand: the world is on the cusp of falling apart and surviving Dis (i.e. Hell) was the easy part. It begins with a wham-bham-thank-you-mam tidal wave of magic that coats the entire globe, unleashing power and shifting realms. And creates general chaos and mayhem. By now, we all know that the female deity that the Lupi were created to oppose and eventually destroy, is behind all the trouble. However, to get that, she needs an ancient book, the Book of All Magic that was lost after the Purge, in order to enter this realm.

To be short, there are two interlaced romances and tales in and of their own right. They do develop rather slowly, but its not a bad pace, and this book's plotting is incredibly dense.

Lily's & Rule's tangoing is pretty much status quo and now has that 'awe...that's so sweet' element that was really frustrating, and uneventful (physical-wise), in the first 2 books. I've always appreciated, and rather enjoyed, Wilk's day-by-day spin on the romance part. Very realistic and more meaningful. Love and romance, however, are the least of their worries as Toby, Rule's young son, decided to up and leave his human family to spend Christmas with them, and becomes the center of a plan by Jiri, Cynna's old teacher and perhaps a puppet to Her. To add to the hectic pace and drama, Rule has become inexplicably entangled with his familial enemy, Leidolf, and becomes
embroiled within that pack's religious and political structure. It's still not clear if this is a good or bad thing, but one thing is for certain, it's something wholly unheard of, in any clan tradition.

The second romance is of Cullen and Cynna's, while written with a bit more force, and parallels Rule's & Lilly's, doesn't really bloom until 3/4 of the way. But, boy, is the outcome interesting...though the process of their flirting is subdued and dull, their ability to annoy each other can be amusing. And tedious, since they argue semantics and magical logics of their world, though its purpose is to explain what the hell is going on and why. Wilks may bring in a lot of weird stuff in, but she always gets it explained, and doesn't wait too long to tell you.

Meanwhile--Grandma Yu gets her chunk of play, as we begin to learn more about her and her overall role in things to come. Which is a doozy.

I realized the reason why I was put off with the first two in this incredible series. One, I'm used to a lot of exposition, character internalization of emotions and detailed accounts of emotional battles, both verbal and not. This series doesn't rely on that. It sticks strictly with dialogue exposition, almost entirely third person, and carefully placed descriptions of all action, physical, emotional, psychological, etc, which is hard to get comfortable with at times. There is no stream of consciousness, or much (if any) internal talking by characters. Thus, the narrator is both there and yet not, which is why the characters themselves can feel mechanical and distant. Also, there isn't the usual hot and heavy sex scenes. Which Wilks really isn't into, and doesn't find as essentially important as plotting, which is so well thought out, and focuses on character developments, which is either stable, static or meandering. It's not so much immediate growth, but things happen, and their digesting what to do. A bit more true-time if you imagine it like real life...

By now, the characters are growing on me. I still find them hard to relate to but I do like them, and I appreciate how consistent they're written and behave. Wilks has really made things logically reasonable and believable, consistent, despite the scope of her world, which she knows inside out. And everything else, really. Her style can be clinical, a bit mechanical and choppy sometimes, but she gets her points across that were hook-line-and-sinker for me to keep going, despite my misgivings and my inability to see romance novels out side the box. So thanks and huge kudos for her!

There's so much that happens, that after the other two, it's kind of disorienting but well executed. There's a lot of dialogue that you'll have to tread through carefully, otherwise it won't make as much sense. The one annoying thing is the constant recap and repetition of info that Wilks feels necessary to keep hitting you in the head with. However, I'm on tenterhooks to start the 4th...and thank god I stuck with it.

Love it or Hate it: still a great world but nothing new. 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I read Mortal Danger in a shorter time-span than TD, mostly because I'm used to the world Wilks has created, which is still very unique and interesting, about the only thing that is. And the blurb on the back of the book is kind of misleading and tells you nothing of what actually happens.

So. In book 2, Lily Yu is the center of conspiracy being hatched in another world, Dis, i.e., Hell. And it does segue smoothly enough from Book 1 to 2. Like, when she finally confronts Harlowe, in a short uninspiring 'fight' scene, she, or rather, a part of her, is sucked into Dis, along with Rule, in fur form, and a little daemon, Gan, who was supposed to possess her, but failed. And thus, the bigger machinations of the higher-ups in Dis, is halted, for now.

Got that? Well, that's all there is to it. The two Lilys try to figure out what the heck is going on and who and what is mucking realms and realities. Along the way, we're introduced to Cynna Weaver, a MCD Finder, who, well, Finds people, magical beings and stuff. As well as more of Cullen Seabourne. Besides being introduced for book 3, these two explain this world a bit more, and the inner and outer workings, and specifically, provide backup for the mental leg work of when Lilly in the real world decides to break into Hell and get her man back. And it also breaks up the static and staleness of the story itself. More or less.

Once again, this is much more character-driven and about plotting, which was disjointed and doesn't tie itself very neatly or very well from beginning to end. Lots of things happen, but not of it piqued my curiosity or made me think about the bigger picture, it was all laid out there for me. It's was a hodge-podge of this and that, throw in some stolid action elements, a few tender and freaking out moments, and poof, you got Mortal Danger.

The romance, while not in hot-and-heavy panting I'm used to reading in a typical 'romance' novel, Wilks' direction seems to be more about the emotional and psychological ties of that side of romance. Not instant wham-o 'I love you', sex, and more 'I love yous', but all the muddle and confusing side of it. And so, Lily's and Rule's dance seems a bit long, a bit old, but I'd say a more realistic approach to love. I'm not saying it works wonderfully, it doesn't always, but it's a nice change of pace. So I appreciate the rendering and unfolding of this unusual romance, but come on Wilks...give us some foreplay, or at least some sizzling passionate something or sparks!

Wilks has a very clear and distinct world, and she gives the reader specific ways of reading and interpreting this world and the characters. And, oh boy, her characters are still written with little room for growth, which makes them all flat, wooden, mechanical and unemotional. No spice, no curiosity, subdued passion...Part of it is Wilks' own writing style, and still makes me feel so indifferent to them, to the I-just-don't-care zone. And that's not a good thing, when I have to try really hard to like any of the characters. Frustrating and tedious doesn't even begin to describe Book 2. It's less snappy dialogue and more explanations, which doesn't always work and can drag on.

MD might make some you folks happy, but I wasn't nearly as satisfied. But I did finish the darn thing so I have to admit, Wilks has the promise of something, and that's the problem. A promise and...just more of the same going and going nowhere. In the end though, not enough all around. As a rehashing of book 1, with some new light surprises to drag you along to Book 3, I'm debating whether or not to bail and just look for something more intriguing.

Anthologies are short stories-which means you will not have to deal with a monstrous amount of subplots. (Yeah!!!!) Sometimes after reading amass of novels, anthologies give you a much-needed break. The short stories do not allow the 300+ pages authors use for interference from outsiders and forces them to stick to the main characters/plot.

Playing With Fire by Susan Johnson *****
Historical Romance: The penniless Duke of Ware has been brought and paid for by banker, John Overton who wanted a dukedom for his daughter, Olivia. Olivia is so excited that she does not even say "I do" when prompted by the priest and Ware is so enthused that he got drunk the night before his wedding and had to be dragged out of bed by his solicitor-after his the countess (his mistress) was dragged out. Unwillingly they must both stick with Overton's contract and each other until an heir is produced. I am partial to Susan Johnson and feel this is another great love story. Olivia is a strong woman and stands her ground with this notorious rake. Though he may be rough, she is tough enough to straighten out this Duke's edges.

Simple Sins by Eileen Wilks ****
Romance: Bad boy meets Good girl. Felicity is a school teacher in the good ole town of Cross Creek. Damon Reed left Cross Creek for the fast life and has only returned in order to get some closure after the death of his grandmother, Gertrude. Felicity is seeking closure too, her mother has a problem and she's trying to get into Gertrude's house to find it. Damon immediately recognizes her and since the road is flooded, they are forced to live under the same roof and play seek & find. Felicity knows there is no way someone like Damon could be interested in her but he has other ideas. First time I have ever heard of this author but that did not stop me from enjoying this great story.

Lover, Beware has a very good set of intriguing stories. The first one by Christine Feehan is my absolute favorite Magic in the Wind about a group of seven sisters and their adventures. This one is out Sarah the oldest and her relationship with Damon her soon to be lover. The second Hot August Moon by Katherine Sutcliff was to me the hardest one to get into. I think of the four this one was the weakest for me, I also think that because it was pre-equal to her book Bad Moon Rising I may have just not connected with it. The third was by Fiona Brand After was also to me a very interesting read. The final story by Eileen Wilks Only Human is my second favorite. Lily reminds me of a very naive Anita Blake and Rule who is a very hunky and good looking werewolf has a real interest in Lily who is a detective looking into several murders. A very likable and interesting story. I hope that these four get together again and do another anthology. Maybe a continuation of these stories. Please Christine write more of 7 sisters stories, and Eileen a continuation of Lily and Rule. Please.....................
