Excellent! Can't wait for the Next Edition! 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

If you are a undergraduate or a graduate student who needs to learn some biochemistry from the ground up (without an instructor), this is the text for you. Lehninger really outdoes himself by creating a Biochemistry textbook that's not only colorful and pretty to look at but also wonderfully written. Of all of the science textbooks I've had to read to date, this was the best! Lehninger really does write the text so that it's like reading a novel, which allows for maximum absorption of the material he covers. Occasionally, I hit spots in my reading which were harder to understand, but that was because my own ignorance and not his. He begins the text with a review of the basics of general chemistry and organic chemistry which come into play with the biochemistry subject matter. Then he continues on, developing the student's foundations with describing protein structure and protein function, working his way up with enzymatic properties and activities. Carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids come next. The last section of the book is devoted to biochemical mechanisms, which is alot, but it is covered adequately for a beginner's textbook. The only major drawback: many of the answers to the chapter questions are wrong, hopefully, this will be addressed in the 4th Ed. If your school doesn't use Lehninger, protest, write treatises, do anything to convince your Biochemistry professor to use this text to teach you biochemisty! It's expensive, but once you have this textbook, don't ever sell it because if you're going into chemistry or biochemistry, it will be a priceless resource for your future studies!

Editorial Review:

For nearly a quarter century Molecular Biology of the Cell has been the leading cell biology textbook. This tradition continues with the new Fifth Edition, which has been completely revised and updated to describe our current, rapidly advancing understanding of cell biology. To list but a few examples, a large amount of new material is presented on epigenetics; stem cells; RNAi; comparative genomics; the latest cancer therapies; apoptosis (now its own separate chapter); and cell cycle control and the mechanics of M phase (now integrated into one chapter). The hallmark features of Molecular Biology of the Cell have been retained, such as its consistent and comprehensive art program, clear concept headings, and succinct section summaries. Additionally, in response to extensive feedback from readers, the Fifth Edition now includes several new features. It is now more portable. Chapters 1-20 are printed and Chapters 21-25, covering multicellular systems, are provided as pdf files on the free Media DVD-ROM which accompanies the book.* And for the first time, Molecular Biology of the Cell now contains end-of-chapter questions. These problems, written by John Wilson and Tim Hunt, emphasize a quantitative approach and the art of reasoning from experiments, and -they will help students review and extend their knowledge derived from reading the textbook. The Media DVD-ROM, which is packaged with every copy of the book, contains PowerPoint® presentations with all of the figures, tables and micrographs from the text (available as JPEGs too). Also included is the Media Player, which plays over 125 movies—animations, videos, and molecular models—all with voiceover narration. A new reader-friendly feature is the integration of media codes throughout the text that link directly to relevant videos and animations. The Media DVD-ROM holds the multicellular systems chapters (21-25) of the text as well. By skillfully extracting the fundamental concepts from this enormous and ever-growing field, the authors tell the story of cell biology, and thereby create a coherent framework through which readers may approach and enjoy this subject that is so central to all of biology. * There is also a reference edition of Molecular Biology of the Cell, Fifth Edition (ISBN 978-0-8153-4111-6) that contains Chapters 1-25 entirely in printed format.

Not just for the brains or chem class 5 out of 5 stars.

I rarely write reviews but couldn't miss the chance to champion this product. Over a year ago a natural health practitioner had told me to try a neti pot for my terrible allergies and chronic sinus problems, but I thought it was just one of those New Age fads or something. In the last few years my allergies have gotten so bad that I can only breathe through my mouth most of the time.

What does that have to do with this book? NOTHING!! Except it explains why I began to read it (an undergraduate text after all - despite having graduated from Duke with my Ph.D in Organic Chemistry in 1974).

You see, deep mental concentration will generate a headache due to sinusal constriction but shallow mental concentration (such as in reviewing a subject of which you are already a master) will help aereate the sinalstic passageways and reduce thresholdolic pain genaration.

Whether or not you are a graduate level Buy and read this book!! No matter what, it will feed your head sinus' with oxygen as the Doremouse said.

addendum: Morrison & Boyd's "Organic Chemistry" (3rd Ed.) would be better but it is hard to find . . . the vampire reference (chirality) still crack's me up!!

Editorial Review:

Chemistry: The Central Science is the most trusted book on the market--its scientific accuracy, clarity, innovative pedagogy, functional problem-solving and visuals set this book apart. Brown, LeMay, and Bursten teach students the concepts and skills they need without overcomplicating the subject. A comprehensive media package that works in tandem with the text helps students practice and learn while providing instructors the tools they need to succeed.

If you want to study Chemistry do not get this book 1 out of 5 stars.

I used this book for General College Chemistry and I would like to say that this is possibly the worst Textbook I have ever used. It is poorly written and is quite simply hard to follow. I would recommend that you purchase an adjunct Chemistry textbook if you are going to use this one.

Editorial Review:

Authors Steven and Susan Zumdahl offer all the elements instructors need for their general chemistry course. They bring a conceptual approach to chemistry and integrate problem-solving skills throughout, helping students transition from theory to practice. A strong emphasis on models, real-world applications, and visual learning prevails throughout the text. The Seventh Edition seamlessly integrates the strengths of the Zumdahl approach through a comprehensive and interwoven print and technology program. Enhanced Sample Exercises, online homework problems, and Classroom Response System content help instructors assess conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills, while new animations and images support visual learning. In addition, Houghton Mifflin offers implementation services through our TeamUP program to help instructors and students get the most out of the text and its supplements.

Editorial Review:

The Ninth Edition of Organic Chemistry continues Solomons~Fryhle's tradition of excellence in teaching and preparing students for success in the organic classroom and beyond.

Students are often overwhelmed by the early rigors of organic chemistry. Solomons~Fryhle prepares students for these early rigors by introducing acids & bases--topics they know from general chemistry--early, followed by chapters on structure and stereochemistry. Next, a discussion of ionic reactions gives students a foundation for the vast majority of reactions that they will encounter. The Ninth Edition continues to introduce IR spectroscopy in chapter 2 (after functional groups) and Carbon-13 NMR spectroscopy in chapter 4, providing synergy with most lab courses and, again, reinforcing learning.

The new edition of Solomons~Fryhle also has a completely revised WileyPLUS course to help students and instructors reach their full potential. WileyPLUS provides instructors with the most robust online homework solution in organic chemistry. This revision of WileyPLUS meets students where and when they learn and provides them with a learning platform that offers real learning solutions that complement their approach to managing and mastering organic concepts.

Question 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 5 people found this review helpful.

What is the difference between this edition and the 6th revised edition, and why is the latter so much cheaper?

Biochemistry anyone? 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Most people are probably buying this book because they are a college student and they have to, but compared to some other books, this one is clear and easy to read, so don't be too afraid of Biochemistry if you have this in you bag.

For learning of organised systems, organised thematical material would be better. 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am basing my review primarily on two things in this textbook: the organisation and the definitions.

A textbook MUST be approachable. Students will be covering intricate topics in a book of this sort, and in order to help them, the writer(s) must present the material logically, thematically and beautifully organised.

I'm afraid the writers did not do that here. Systems that should be covered before one proceeds further - information for which knowledge of other systems is presupposed - appear much earlier than they should, leaving the unfortunate student staring wild-eyed at the text, muttering, "What?" This is particularly noticable when explicating chemical pathways.

Definitions are ludicrously lacking. What indexing there is is incomplete and insufficient.

The book fails in its intended purpose, and that is why I simply cannot recommend it. May I suggest using Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews as a better organised textbook? It is quite a good coverage, although it does assume some biochemistry knowledge. I've heard that the Garrett Biochemistry textbook (just released in December 2006) is good for beginner students, so that may well be worth checking.

There are certainly alternatives to this poorly written textbook.

Used In College 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I actually just took my final for this course 10 min ago. Took this course and used this book in my junior year of college. Book was good but extremely dry. It does explain the nuts and bolts of orgo in a precise and direct manner. Chapters are pretty long averaging about 40 pages each. Within chapters there are practice problems that are very helpful, I suggest buying this with the problem solving guide, because the book only gives answers to it's questions until a certain point beyond that they require you to purchase the problem solving guide. There are many pictures and figures to help you understand the material better.

Editorial Review:

A Market Leading, Traditional Approach to Organic Chemistry

Throughout all seven editions, Organic Chemistry has been designed to meet the needs of the "mainstream," two-semester, undergraduate organic chemistry course. This best-selling text gives students a solid understanding of organic chemistry by stressing how fundamental reaction mechanisms function and reactions occur. With the addition of handwritten solutions, new cutting-edge molecular illustrations, updated spectroscopy coverage, seamless integration of molecular modeling exercises, and state-of-the-art multimedia tools, the 7th edition of Organic Chemistry clearly offers the most up-to-date approach to the study of organic chemistry.

Best out there 5 out of 5 stars.

My AP chemistry class used this book as well as my college General Chemistry class. Ive compared it with other popular chemistry books and none of them explain as thoroughly and cover as wide a breadth of topics as this book does. If your having problems with your current General Chemistry textbook you should definitely buy this one as an adjunct to it.

chemistry the central science 3 out of 5 stars.

The book was in mint condition, and shipping was extremely fast, the problem I had was it came with a media pak, I paid alot for this not realizing that there were different media paks, my daughter spent a week trying to get into her college class with this, numerous e-mails waiting 24 hrs for an answer, numerous phone calls, only to find out it was wrong and we had to pay another $50.00 on line to get the right codes to get into the class. It should be listed somewhere what the different classes are we could have bought a used book & the code on line and saved alot of money.

The Authoritative Gen Chem Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I teach general chemistry as both a private tutor and as a free tutor at Purdue University. In my time, I've seen every general chemistry book known to man come across the table. Without fail, though, BLB is my reference text. Like many gen chem books it has excellent diagrams, but in addition the text is lucid, organized, well written and makes no pedagogical leaps that the reader must figure out on their own. It is easy to read and easy to understand and the material is presented in a fairly logical order (I have minor quibbles with some of it). I forsee this book becoming a classic in the future.

very poor 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I ordered a book, and never received it. This company refused to send me another one or reimburse my money. And still to this day no book no money. I am out 90 some dollars for a book never received. All i wanted was a contact number, they could not even provide me with that. All i want is my money back. This is really bad business.

Seems more appropriate for high schoolers. 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I'm a junior chemistry major, and we used this book in our General Chemistry I and II course. I must say, this book is awful. The problems in the back of the book are extremely easy and only cover the basics of each section. For instance, in Chapter 17, on acid-base equilibrium, the book only covers how to do a handful of types of acid-base equilibria problems, when there are tons of different types. For me, it was absolutely useless to even look at the book because the problems were so simplified and all exactly the same.

If your class suggests this book, I'd recommend purchasing another book because unless your professor is really easy, you'll be pretty screwed over trying to learn anything from this piece of trash.

Editorial Review:

The Ninth Edition of this market-leading text has been substantially revised to meet the rapidly changing instructional demands of General Chemistry professors. Known for its carefully developed, thoroughly integrated, step-by-step approach to problem solving, General Chemistry helps students master quantitative skills and build a lasting conceptual understanding of key chemical concepts. The Ninth Edition retains this hallmark approach and builds upon the conceptual focus through key new features and revisions.

Really great Ochem book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Really really loved this book.

One of the best written college textbooks i have read in a long time

1). GOOD examples

2). REALLY thorough. It will cover nearly every topic in the entire ochem spectrum. When i was studying for the MCAT and couldnt find the answer to something all i had to do was pop open this book and find out about wolf-kirschner reductionr etc etc.

3). well written

4). easy to understand

Cons
1). really expensive, the solutions manual is really expensive too. Also the modeling kit is really expensive lol.

LOTS OF DOUGH, but if you can afford it its really a great book.

Editorial Review:

This innovative book from acclaimed educator Paula Bruice is organized in a way that discourages rote memorization. The author’s writing has been praised for anticipating readers' questions, and appeals to their need to learn visually and by solving problems. Emphasizing that learners should reason their way to solutions rather than memorize facts, Bruice encourages them to think about what they have learned previously and apply that knowledge in a new setting. KEY TOPICS The book balances coverage of traditional topics with bioorganic chemistry, highlights mechanistic similarities, and ties synthesis and reactivity together–teaching the reactivity of a functional group and the synthesis of compounds obtained as a result of that reactivity. For the study of organic chemistry.
