Calling all Corn People - READ THIS BOOK! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I read this book a little while ago and didn't have time to review it, but the essential messages keep popping into my consciousness as I go about my day-to-day life. Before reading this book, for example, I had never realized that Corn has cunningly taken over the world and turned us all into "Corn People." Pollan's simple plan - to make three meals - turns into an exploration of all things wrong with the modern industrial food production and delivery system. Pollan's prose is wonderful and his thinking nothing short of brilliant. Even if some of his ideas are not completely original, as some critical reviews argue, this is still a remarkable book that will enrich your life - and the world, if enough people read it.

Editorial Review:

A New York Times bestseller that has changed the way readers view the ecology of eating, this revolutionary book by award winner Michael Pollan asks the seemingly simple question: What should we have for dinner? Tracing from source to table each of the food chains that sustain us—whether industrial or organic, alternative or processed—he develops a portrait of the American way of eating. The result is a sweeping, surprising exploration of the hungers that have shaped our evolution, and of the profound implications our food choices have for the health of our species and the future of our planet.

Editorial Review:

With more than 200,000 copies in print, The Craft of Research is the unrivaled resource for researchers at every level, from first-year undergraduates to research reporters at corporations and government offices.
Now, seasoned researchers and educators Gregory G. Colomb and Joseph M. Williams present an updated third edition of their classic handbook, whose first and second editions were written in collaboration with the late Wayne C. Booth. The Craft of Research explains how to build an argument that motivates readers to accept a claim; how to anticipate the reservations of readers and to respond to them appropriately; and how to create introductions and conclusions that answer that most demanding question, “So what?”
The third edition includes an expanded discussion of the essential early stages of a research task: planning and drafting a paper. The authors have revised and fully updated their section on electronic research, emphasizing the need to distinguish between trustworthy sources (such as those found in libraries) and less reliable sources found with a quick Web search. A chapter on warrants has also been thoroughly reviewed to make this difficult subject easier for researchers.
Throughout, the authors have preserved the amiable tone, the reliable voice, and the sense of directness that have made this book indispensable for anyone undertaking a research project.

A "Must Read" for Everyone 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Groopman is an eminent and wise physician who has written this honest and incisive book on "how doctors think." The emphasis is on how they are subject to errors and omissions in perception, reasoning, decision making, communication, and action, but examples are also provided of excellent performance in which these sorts of errors and omissions are avoided.

Dr. Groopman is an excellent writer, so the book is easy and enjoyable to read, and never gave me that feeling of "just wanting to get it over with."

I think the book would have been better if some of the key non-medical terms (eg, "premature closure" and "framing effect") were italicized in the text and included in a glossary. I would also have liked to see a summary of key points, in bullet-point format, at the end of each chapter. However, even as is, the book still warrants a full 5 stars.

There is actually an extensive literature addressing these issues in depth, in a general way which covers all fields of endeavor, but Dr. Groopman doesn't seem to be aware of this literature. See for example Human Error. Therefore, the particular contribution of this book is that it applies all of this in the setting of medical practice in an easily understood way. For that reason, this book is a must read for everyone: people need to have a realistic sense of the capabilities and limitations of their doctors, so that they can work with them effectively and improve outcomes.

I also highly recommend Dr. Groopman's book The Anatomy of Hope: How People Prevail in the Face of Illness, which is excellent in audio form (masterfully read by Dr. Groopman himself).

Editorial Review:

How Doctors Think is a window into the mind of the physician and an insightful examination of the all-important relationship between doctors and their patients. In this myth-shattering work, Jerome Groopman explores the forces and thought processes behind the decisions doctors make. He pinpints why doctors succeed and why they err. Most important, Groopman shows when and how doctors can -- with our help -- avoid snap judgments, embrace uncertainty, communicate effectively, and deploy other skills that can profoundly impact our health.

Anatomy lab couldn't be explained any worse 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is just awful. It does a bad job in pointing out the structures you need to identify, and has many inconsistences. Although it tries to walk you through the dissection procedure, you will end up finding out that reading through it is a waste of time, especially if you're a medical student like myself. It's actually a step down from the 12th edition, which did not mix all the anatomy with the dissection instructions. I really don't understand why many medical schools choose to follow this book with dissections (maybe because it's the only one out there). If you had the choice between buying an atlas or buying this book, BUY THE ATLAS!

Editorial Review:

Since 1940, when Dr. J.C. Boileau Grant created the first lab manual based on Grant's method of dissection, Grant's Dissector has clearly established its authority and preeminence as the "gold standard" of gross anatomy dissection manuals. In the last edition, the material was streamlined to focus on more accurate, specific and clear steps, based on market conditions and feedback. This edition continues to focus on the trend of reduced lab hours yet maintains the quality and reliability of Grant's original manual. Grant's Dissector, Fourteenth Edition features over 40 new figures to provide consistent appearance and include additional details, and is cross-referenced to the leading anatomy atlases, including Grant's, Netter's, Rohen, and Clemente.

Helpful guide 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Although I've written many research papers, I found this book to be a great guide to help me 'fill in' the missing pieces in my work. It provides useful guidelines in all phases of research writing, from picking the right topic to statistical techniques.

Editorial Review:

Written in uncommonly engaging, lucid, and elegant prose, this book is an “understand-it-yourself, do-it-yourself” manual designed to help readers understand the fundamental structure of quality research and the methodical process that leads to genuinely significant results.

It guides the reader, step-by-step, from the selection of a problem to study, through the process of conducting authentic research, to the preparation of a completed report, with practical suggestions based on a solid theoretical framework and sound pedagogy. This book will show readers two things: 1) that quality research demands planning and design; and, 2) how their own research projects can be executed effectively and professionally. For researchers and research analysts in any discipline.

great textbook adjunct 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book was really useful - the coloring parts are especially good if you are a visual learner. There's also more to it than just coloring in pictures - there are lots of fill-in-the-blanks sections to test your knowledge and review major ideas. This is where the only criticism lies....if you don't have the textbook (or a good knowledge of the material) then some sections will be hard to complete. Answers are provided, however, so overall, it is a really useful book and offers more than you might first assume.

Editorial Review:

Anatomy and Physiology Coloring Workbook is an excellent tool for anyone who is learning basic human anatomy and physiology. The author's straightforward approach promotes and reinforces learning on many levels through a wide variety of visual and written exercises. Along with its review of the human body from microscopic to macroscopic levels the workbook also includes practical, clinically oriented activities. The Human Body: An Orientation, Basic Chemistry, Cells and Tissues, Skin and Body Membranes, The Skeletal System, The Muscular System, The Nervous System, Special Senses, The Endocrine System, Blood, The Cardiovascular System, The Lymphatic System and Body Defenses, The Respiratory System, The Digestive System and Body Metabolism, The Urinary System, The Reproductive System. For all readers interested in learning the basics of anatomy and physiology.

Editorial Review:

Skillfully done, research can be the solid cornerstone of your term paper (or dissertation, essay, or article); inadequately executed, it can cause your whole project to crumble and fall. Yet essential as research is to the ultimate success of your work, performing it is not an innate talent. The precepts, steps, and skills of solid research are readily acquired if you spend some time with The Craft of Research before you start on your outlines and thesis statements. Written by three distinguished professors in 1995, published by the University of Chicago, and winner of the 1995-96 Critics' Choice Award, The Craft of Research teaches how to plan, carry out, and report on research for any field and at any level. Aimed at assisting student researchers, from raw beginners to accomplished graduate and professional students, the book shows how to choose a topic, plan and organize research, and how to draft and revise a report of findings such that a convincing solution is offered to a significant problem.

The Craft of Research is more than just another instruction manual getting you from topic to outline to notes to report. Recognizing that good research is rarely a simple, sequential procedure, but is instead a complex and intricate process, it discusses the subtle ways in which asking questions about your topic can influence how you draft your report, how a quality introduction can send you back to the library, and how the process of drafting can highlight flaws in your argument that need to be addressed. Clear and explicit, sophisticated and practical, The Craft of Research encourages high standards of scholarly achievement, and spells out the steps by which to get there. --Stephanie Gold

Editorial Review:

"Creswell's Research Design is an accessible and useful book that stimulates students through walk through experiences, use of exercises, and production of actual writing samples. It is a book that models the types of issues that best suit different approaches and allows students to understand when to use mixed methods. Furthermore, its focus on theory and paradigms is done in a way that helps students decode their meaning."

--MARTHA MONTERO-SIEBURTH, University of Massachusetts, Boston

"One of the most formidable challenges of research design is stating your purpose. Creswell's approach takes the guesswork out of the process."

--STEVE GUERRIERO, Organization & Management, Antioch New England Graduate School

The Second Edition of the bestselling Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches offers a unique comparison of three key approaches to inquiry. This comparison begins with preliminary consideration of knowledge claims for all three approaches, a review of the literature, and reflections about the importance of writing and ethics in scholarly inquiry. The book also addresses the key elements of the process of research: writing an introduction; stating a purpose for the study; identifying research questions and hypotheses; using theory; defining, delimiting and stating the significance of the study; and advancing methods and procedures for data collection and analysis.

Key Features:

  • Provides a clear presentation of how to implement a mixed methods design in your proposal or plan as well as show how to implement qualitative and quantitative approaches
  • Presents the ethical issues that may arise in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods studies
  • Offers extensive writing tips to help get your research plan started in the right direction
  • Contains the latest developments in qualitative inquiry—including advocacy, participatory, and emancipatory approaches

The book is an invaluable reference on the basics of research design as well as an effective text for graduate courses in Research Methods, Research Design, and related topics. The book serves a broad audience of social and human scientists in fields of marketing, management, criminal justice, psychology, sociology, K-12 education, higher and post-secondary education, nursing, health sciences, urban studies, and family research.
