Good Book if You're Beyond Basics 4 out of 5 stars.
28 of 28 people found this review helpful.

I've been programming for about two years. Most of my training in Labview is by trial-and-error and reading the examples that came with Labview. I've written over 3 dozen programs for my present employer.

As for books, I have many of them. This book in particular, is aimed to the advanced user. Don't expect to learn how to write programs with this book. For a graphical programming language, this book has very little graphics or pictures.

What you can expect is to hone your applications so that they are easier for the end user, easier to maintain and separates `working' VIs from `expert' VI. Many little tricks in this book (such as setting preferences, using state machines, and yes, Active X) will make your applications run faster with less overhead.

If you're looking for a book to show you more programming techniques, with actual examples, I'd opt for Essick's "Advanced LabVIEW Labs" (an intermediate book) or Johnson's "LabVIEW Graphical Programming" (more advanced). If you're looking for ways to separate yourself from programmers that make `working' VIs, then this book by Bitter et al. is for you.

Editorial Review:

The graphical nature of LabVIEW makes it ideal for test and measurement applications and results in significant productivity improvements over conventional programming languages. However, comprehensive treatments of the more advanced topics have been scattered and difficult to find-until now. LabVIEW Advanced Programming Techniques offers in-depth coverage of the subjects that move you to the next level of programming -the level that allows full exploitation of LabVIEW's power and utility.

Is Anything Better Out There? 2 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

This book has been required for a Dimensional Metrology class at Palomar College for the last ten years. This course is required for students seeking an AA in Quality Assurance Technology, or Quality certification. Though not a definitive guideline for the science of measurement, it seems to be the best text available.

Although there is an abundance of illustrations most are outdated and from the sixties. The field of Metrology has changed substantially and this text has not been revised accordingly. The questions and answer choices that follow each chapter are ambiguous in nature and need to reflect current issues. I would like to see more alignment with the ASQ CMI body of knowledge, inclusion of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and revision of the statistics chapter to include Gage R&R and various continuous improvement tools (cause and effect diagrams, run charts, process capability, trend charts, check sheets, etc.). The QS 9000 guidelines and newer calibration standards should also be referenced.

Let's see a major overhaul with the next issue.

Editorial Review:

In modern industrial environments where responsibility for quality control is being placed upon individual workers, the understanding of dimensional metrology principles is becoming increasingly important. That's why the fifth edition of our best-selling Fundamentals of Dimensional Metrology book offers a direct path to understanding and applying the principles, techniques, and devices used within the dimensional metrology field today. This edition uses both the Metric and Imperial systems, yet emphasizes Metric measurement devices and concepts in all examples for greater consistency with the latest industry trends. Information on particular devices and concepts, previously presented in separate chapters, has been combined to improve the logical flow of the material. New chapter-end review questions have also been added to eliminate the potential for ambiguity, allowing readers to gauge their understanding as they progress through the book.

the best remains hidden 5 out of 5 stars.

The study of ancient metrology and the numerical harmonics embedded within opens the mind to a whole new world. To me, the lack of academic attention to this subject is amazing given the seemingly grounded research these and a few other authors provide. But forget academia.....dive in for yourself. It seems certain that somebody in the past knew a lot more than we know now about the nature of our world and of mathematics. It is a great mystery. And as we harken back to the past for insights to help us survive a cloudy future, this ancient worldview that is preserved in megalithic monuments offers much promise.
To be true to the authors, this is my own take on the whole field of sacred geometry/ancient metrology. This book is more specialized, focusing on ancient geodesy of England and the world. But it is a superb introduction to their work and that of associates in the process of rediscovering this science.....just by doing the numbers.

Editorial Review:

Two leading researchers into ancient wisdom demonstrate that the earth’s dimensions were accurately known prior to 3000 BC. These astonishing findings, available for the first time, include a system of surveying and measure based on simple numerical and geometrical rules documents that remnants of this science still existed in medieval times when it became lost. It appears that the system was applied worldwide. Chapters include: Measurement and the Moon; Stonehenge & the Lunation Triangle; The Preseli Triangle; Prehistoric Precision: A Summary; The Numbers that Measure the Earth; Traditions of Ancient Surveyors in Britain; Secrets of the 52nd Parallel; Dates and Speculations "A Summary; Appendices.

A must have for anyone starting out as an experimentalist 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I would recommend this book to every beginning engineer and experimentalist. The book is full of examples, derivations, and lots of questions. It does require that you actually read it to get anything out of it, but the best feature is the online material, with MATLAB programs, videos, and additional material. I have found this book is very enjoyable to teach out of, and given future opportunities I will use it much more.

useful engineering text 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is well written but it does require that you pay attention and think. I found this book to be very useful to understand engineering measurements. After three engineering coop internships, I enjoyed some rationale for methods I learned in practice. Lots of examples. Some of the Labview programs were helpful. One of the more useful texts.

Editorial Review:

This text integrates the theory of measurements, experimental planning and instrument theory to provide a fundamental background to engineering measurement. It contains a thorough treatment of uncertainty analysis, an introduction to statistics, including finite statistics, a new chapter on sampling concepts and data acquisition systems, and revised material on force, torque and power measurements.

Editorial Review:

A comprehensive reference and history book on what is measured and why.

Measurement is one of humankind's oldest and most vital activities. By measuring height, speed, size, temperature, strength and many other factors, humans can compare, improve and progress. In fact, measurement is an essential tool for survival.

A Measure of Everything is a wide-ranging and comprehensive guide to what is measured and why.

The book begins when the basic measurements were as simple as more, less and enough. As societies evolved, relative measurements were no longer sufficient. Advances in language allowed more precise measurements. Short distances were measured in relation to parts of the human body. For example, the ancient measurement cubit was the length of a pharaoh's arm plus the width of his hand.

As society and culture progress and change, so do measurements. The rise of astronomy and the sciences demanded more exact measurements. These measurements are typically named after the discovering scientist, e.g., henry, curie, watt, rutherford, fahrenheit.

This book features 28 categories organized into three sections:

  • Earth and Life Sciences: astronomy, distance, time, meteorology, medicine, and five others.
  • Physical Sciences: chemistry, mathematics, physics, speed, weight, temperature, and three others.
  • Technology and Leisure: computers, engineering, finance, food, textiles, and four others.

A Measure of Everything is an informative and entertaining book that will appeal to a wide range of readers.

I bought the book last week and since then I can't stop reading it and going through the well presented Labs. I find the book very interesting, well written ,to the point and clear. It will get you up to speed with Labview quickly. I own other Labview books but this is the only one that I didn't find boring or confusing. This is definitely a book I would recommend to all the students who want to learn Labview in a short period of time and also to the instructors; it can be a great teaching tool ! Finally, the price is ...very affordable. Great book ! ...

Editorial Review:

Advanced LabVIEW Labs provides a structured introduction to LabVIEW-based laboratory skills. The book can be used as a stand-alone tutorial or as a college-level instructional lab text. The reader learns the LabVIEW programming language while writing meaningful programs that explore useful data analysis techniques (numerical integration and differentiation, least-squares curve-fitting, Fast Fourier Transform) and the mechanics of computer-based experimentation using National Instruments DAQ and GPIB boards. During the course of the book, the reader constructs and investigates the proper usage of several computer-based instruments including a digitizing oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer and PID temperature control system as well as learns to control an instrument through the General Purpose Interface Bus.
