Would not have passed without it!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Amazing book! I HATED math in high school! When I found myself going to college at 35, the entrance exam with all the algebraic problems was all French to me...I took the Pre-Algebra prep course at the college but found the textbook to be overwhelmingly confusing. This book cured all that. The For Dummies series is one of the best inventions since the wheel and this volume helped me pass Pre-Algebra as well as showing me that math can actually be a better experience than going to the dentist.

Excellent! 5 out of 5 stars.

My third grade daughter is struggling with her times tables. I bought this book to help her learn. She loves the stories and wants to read the book all the time. When I reminder her that 6x3 is the story about Big Foot, she says, "Oh, that's 18!" right away. The only problem is she doesn't always remember which story goes with which times fact. But as soon as I tell her which story it goes with, she knows the answer. She has ADD, so that might be a factor. This teaches the times facts from 0's through 9's. I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

Memorization of the multiplication facts is fun and easy with this colorful and clever book of cartoons and stories. Children learn to associate the numbers with the characters in the story. To teach 4x4, the story tells about Bart who loves to go hang gliding and can't wait until he turns 16 so he can get his driver's license and drive his 4 by 4. Children easily remember once the story is learned. The caption below the story says: Remember: you have to be 16 to drive a 4x4.

There are cartoons and stories for all the difficult facts, ie. the 3's, 4's, 6's, 7's, and 8's. Tricks are are used to teach the easier ones ie. 1's, 2's, 5's, and 9's. Kids love the stories and will never forget "You have to be 16 to drive a 4 by 4, (4x4). Over 500,000 copies have been sold to schools in the US since 1992.

Editorial Review:

The seemingly impossible Zen task--writing a book about nothing--has a loophole: people have been chatting, learning, and even fighting about nothing for millennia. Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea, by noted science writer Charles Seife, starts with the story of a modern battleship stopped dead in the water by a loose zero, then rewinds back to several hundred years BCE. Some empty-headed genius improved the traditional Eastern counting methods immeasurably by adding zero as a placeholder, which allowed the genesis of our still-used decimal system. It's all been uphill from there, but Seife is enthusiastic about his subject; his synthesis of math, history, and anthropology seduces the reader into a new fascination with the most troubling number.

Why did the Church reject the use of zero? How did mystics of all stripes get bent out of shape over it? Is it true that science as we know it depends on this mysterious round digit? Zero opens up these questions and lets us explore the answers and their ramifications for our oh-so-modern lives. Seife has fun with his format, too, starting with chapter 0 and finishing with an appendix titled "Make Your Own Wormhole Time Machine." (Warning: don't get your hopes up too much.) There are enough graphs and equations to scare off serious numerophobes, but the real story is in the interactions between artists, scientists, mathematicians, religious and political leaders, and the rest of us--it seems we really do have nothing in common. --Rob Lightner

At last. At long last 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I am one of those pathetic cases who should have been a math major, but could not stay awake during the freshman pre-calc lectures conducted by bored and boring grad students. Now, nearly 40 years later I am determined to self-educate my way through calculus.

At first I took a crack at the Wiley "Precalculus A Self Teaching Guide". Holy cripes, what a disaster! Unnerving to find such an improbable number of errors, especially for student picking up after decades of non-study.

Then, I grabbed Rhonda Huettenmeuller's fine work, and am doing the practice at the end of chapter four. I actually remembered some of my advanced algebra and managed to work my way through the problems.

Well written and clear, she provides enough dimensions on problems to give you insight, then gives you room enough to have to think a bit. The answers are all provided, and are *correct*. Well, at least we agree, so that is certainly a good sign.

I especially appreciate how she teaches this from the perspective of tackling calculus as the next step, pointing out issues that particularly apply, and how, to more advanced mathematics.

Now, if we can just get her to write more books...

Editorial Review:

Packed with practical examples, graphs, and Q&As, this complete self-teaching guide from the best-selling author of Algebra Demystified covers all the essential topics, including: absolute value, nonlinear inequalities, functions and their graphs, inverses, proportion and ratio, and much more.

challenging AND fun 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

What an exciting way to present additional math problems: the writing and illustrations capture one's attention, and the subsequent problems are at four distinct levels (from easy to very difficult. The student may solve all of the problems, or the parent/instructor can "save" those difficult levels for later (perhaps next year?) after the student has conquered certain tasks to facilitate success.

Although this may be implemented at various grade levels, I suggest second grade as the youngest starting point. You know your child best, however, and it would be wise to preview book pages at this site before purchasing.

I highly recommend this book for children in all types of classrooms: "regular" school, gifted school, and home school. It is a great supplement for students, and offers a challenge to all.

Editorial Review:

Primary Grade Challenge Math offers material that goes beyond calculation skills for those children who enter the primary grades already knowing basic concepts. This curriculum allows parents and teachers to instill a deeper level of mathematical understanding and thinking skills in young children while nurturing a love of mathematics. (Grades 1st - 4th)

Each chapter’s questions are broken down into four levels:
Level 1 (easy)
Level 2 (somewhat challenging)
Level 3 (challenging)
Einstein (very challenging)

Includes chapters on: Sequences, Problem-solving, Money, Percents, Algebraic Thinking, Negative Numbers, Logic, Ratios, Probability, Measurements, Fractions, Division.

Great for detail-oriented kids and vocab building! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My two boys, ages 3 and 2, both pull this book off the shelf over and over. I use it to teach the younger one new vocabulary (both in English and Spanish) and the older one to continue to practice his numbers (also in both languages), as well as colors. It's a great addition to the workbook Flip Flop Spanish, and also just for fun.., my littlest, a one-year-old girl, even looks at the pages and will sit with the boys to watch them. They're sturdy pages, full of all KINDS of things. The kind of book you find something new each time you open it. It has little lists to find items as well.

Editorial Review:

The fourth book in the I Spy Little Book series is a delightful learning game for preschoolers. Simple rhymes introduce toddlers to the concept of numbers, and bright picture clues allow little ones to have fun with the I Spy hunt as they practice visual discrimination and object identification. An engaging, age-appropriate leaning tool, this book features photographs from I Spy School Days that have been specially cropped for the boards book format. Learning has never been more fun!Age: 2,3,4,5 Manufacturer: Scholastic

A helpful book for the math literate and math phobic alike. 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Being slightly math phobic, I have always tried to find easier ways to solve math problems. This book gave my current methods credibility and gave me new ideas and methods to try. It even helped me feel more confident about my abilities. I'm sure just about anyone could get something out of this book.

What a neat little book 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I live a life dominated by numbers so anything I find that speeds the manipulation of large computations is a godsend. This little book handles the equation nicely. Its unassuming stature hides a powerhouse of mathematical linguistics that brings speed and better accuracy to a wide range of numerical problem solving situations. It's simple, clean-cut approach to finding easy solutions to everyday math problems should be a tremendous help to everyone who reads it.

Editorial Review:

Clear, concise compendium of about 150 time-saving math short-cuts features faster, easier ways to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Each problem includes an explanation of the method, a step-by-step solution, the short-cut solution, and proof, as well as an explanation of why it works. No special math ability needed.

Angie Hogan--Asst. Prin.--Elementary School 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book for any teacher/person teaching young kids about fractions. It gives fractions not commonly found in other "teaching" books. It also give facts about apples and the various types. Great book to be used for a "hands-on" lesson.

Kids love this book 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have had this book for at least a couple years and both my children (currently ages 5 and 8) love it. It is always a favorite at bedtime reading, and they love to look at it on their own too. It is really well thought out and beautifully illustrated. I don't know how much of the fractions concept they are getting from it (we won't know that until the subject comes up in school) but I have to think that by introducing the concept in a fun form and early on cannot hurt. I'd definitely recommend it!

Editorial Review:

Author Jerry Pallotta and illustrator Rob Bolster use a variety of different apples to teach kids all about fractions in this innovative and enjoyable book. Playful elves demonstrate how to divide apples into halves, thirds, fourths, and more. Young readers will also learn about varieties of apples, including Golden and Red Delicious, Granny Smiths, Cortlands, and even Asian Pears.
