I am quite athletic and injured some muscles/tendons. I was in physical therapy and wanted to know more about why specific exercises were helping more than I had expected. This is a perfect book for the aging athlete who will start getting more and more minor problems from wear and tear, that seem to take longer and longer to heal. This book describes quite clearly and completely activies that help both in prevention and recovery. The knowledge it contains will help anyone heal as quickly as possible and avoid reinjury.

Editorial Review:

Now even more extensively illustrated, it provides principles of therapeutic exercise and manual therapy. It describes pathologic conditionsand surgical procedures commonly encountered by therapists in the clinical setting. This renowned manual remains the authoritative source for exerciseinstruction for the therapist and for patient self management.

Tip-Top 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This was a text in my master's program, I now work developing education programs for personal trainers and use Neumann's book as a prime reference. The author does an excellent job of describing how muscles function in vertical, upright movements as opposed to how they are often described from a horizontal, supine position on a table. This book is a must-have reference for any fitness professional interested in understand human movement as it relates to the environment

Editorial Review:

The link between structure and function of the musculoskeletal system is clarified and explained in this complete guide to clinical kinesiology. Kinesiology of the Musculoskeletal System is the most comprehensive, research-based, reader-friendly text on kinesiology ever published. Beautifully and abundantly illustrated in two-color, this dynamic, accessible resource presents complex scientific information in an approach designed to draw the reader in and explore the fundamental principles of kinesiology of the trunk and extremities as well as in relation to joints, muscles, and biomechanics.

Editorial Review:

The most comprehensive pathology text designed specifically for physical therapists, this book offers guidelines, precautions, and contraindications for physical therapy interventions with clients who have musculoskeletal or neuromuscular problems in addition to other significant medical conditions (such as diabetes, heart disease, pancreatitis, obesity, substance abuse, pneumonia, thyroid problems, etc.) Special implications for therapists are included in each discussion of specific diseases and comorbidities. Therapists can easily look up common illnesses, diseases, adverse effects of drugs, organ transplantation, laboratory values, and much more, to see how the patient's conditions might affect therapy and outcomes. Information about the etiology, risk factors, pathogenesis, and clinical manifestations of each comorbidity helps therapists answer their patients' questions and offer useful patient education.

  • Special Implications for the Therapist sections offers specific precautions, contraindications, and considerations for treating patients with any disease or pathologic condition, also addressing the relationship between exercise and disease.
  • Up-to-date information on diseases and conditions, including the latest research findings, looks at recent changes in medical testing and treatment reflecting more sophisticated diagnostic imaging and testing.
  • Preferred Practice Patterns from the American Physical Therapy Association's Guide to the Physical Therapist Practice are incorporated throughout the text.

  • Appendices provide general guidelines for preventing the spread of infection (Appendix A) and exercising medically compromised people safely and effectively (Appendix B).

  • Three new chapters have been added to this edition: Injury, Inflammation, and Healing (Chapter 5); The Lymphatic System (Chapter 12); and Transplantation (Chapter 20).
  • A new emphasis on the influence of exercise on systems, diseases, disorders, and the various conditions discussed.
  • A new focus on health promotion and disease prevention aligns the book with Healthy People 2010, the comprehensive program of public health planning which is endorsed by the APTA and highly esteemed in the health care community.

A book that has stood the test of time. 5 out of 5 stars.
84 of 85 people found this review helpful.

Now in its 5th edition, this book has become "thee" muscle testing book to have. Who's it for? Anyone who has a need to be able to MANUAL muscle test any of the body's muscles. This would include such professionals as doctors, nurses, physical therapists, athletic trainers, personal trainers, etc.

How does the book work? Well, you look up the particular muscle you want to test, look at the picture of the test position, and then simply apply manual pressure to the limb in the instructed direction. If it sounds easy, it is the way this book shows you- included are dozens and dozens of GREAT pictures that show you precisely what to do. So, if you have a need to regularly test muscles, I highly recommend you get this book- it's a little bit more expensive than some of the other muscle testing books, but its the best I've come across so far- in fact it sits right on my desk for reference. Health professionals might also be interested in The Sixty-Second Motivator to help get clients motivated to do their home exercise programs consistently.

Editorial Review:

This renowned classic provides unparalleled coverage of manual muscle testing, plus evaluation and treatment of faulty and painful postural conditions. The thoroughly updated Fifth Edition is completely reorganized and has new, expanded treatment and exercise sections in each chapter. Other features include a new section on post-polio syndrome, additional case studies comparing Guillain-Barré to polio muscle tests, a new full-color design, and a first-of-its-kind chart of upper extremity articulations. A bonus Primal Anatomy CD-ROM contains a three-dimensional interactive model of the human body. Students can rotate the model and add or subtract layers of anatomy to strengthen their knowledge.

Good Theoritical Book 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This book is focusing on Motor theories. Wealth and rich of new Neurorehabilitation concepts, however, this book is not helpful for those who are looking for Neurorehabilitation Techniques in clinical context. This book is not good for someone e.i Physiacl Therapist who is looking for clinical details about the Neurological techniques.

Editorial Review:

Motor Control is the only text to bridge the gap between current motor control research and its applications to clinical practice. The text prepares therapists to examine and treat patients with problems related to balance, mobility, and upper extremity function, based on the best available evidence supporting clinical practice. The Third Edition features a new two-color design with an updated art program. This edition provides the latest research findings and their clinical applications in postural control, mobility, and upper extremity function. Drawings, charts, tables, and photographs are also included to clarify postural control and functional mobility, and laboratory activities and case studies are provided to reinforce key concepts.

Pharmacology in Rehabilitation 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is an easy-to-read, very concise and to the point text book. Ciccone does a great job of summarizing each disease process, listing the drugs used in their management, and including excellent case studies as they pertain to rehabilitation. Of particular help were the boxes at the end of each chapter which detailed any rehabilitation concerns that should be addressed in treating patients using particular pharmacological intervention. I actually read this book from start to finish and can claim to have read an entire textbook, a first for me.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Ciccone Comprehensively covers all the major drug categories that are relevant to rehabilitationl specialists, focusing on drug indications, mechanism of action, and impact on rehabilitation in his thoroughly revised text drawn from the most current peer-reviewed research. With the science of pharmacology changing so rapidly, students and clinicians need this up-to-date, relevant, and credible source of information. This new 4th edition continues to be user friendly - complex information is presented in a clear, organized manner and the text demystifies the practice of pharmacology.
