Editorial Review:

The first edition of this workbook is regarded as a classic in its field, and was the first book to introduce trigger point therapy to the general public as a self-care tool for alleviating chronic pain caused by a variety of conditions, including arthritis, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, headache, muscle ache, and repetitive strain injuries. As the author makes clear, all such conditions are related to lack of oxygen in exhausted or injured muscle tissue. Trigger point therapy has been used for decades by doctors, pain specialists, and massage therapists to quickly stimulate the flow of oxygen and promote rapid pain reduction. This book makes the same techniques available to the general public with instructions that are easy to follow, and abetted by an extensive collection of charts and corresponding illustrations.

The author’s interest in trigger point therapy began when he used it to successfully treat his frozen shoulder. Since that time, he has dedicated himself to teaching others the same techniques. That dedication is obvious throughout his writing and the care he takes to make the therapy understandable to the lay public. Also included in this new edition is updated information that should be of great interest to pain specialists and bodyworkers, as well as useful instruction in a variety of relaxation techniques. Overall, this book is an excellent self-care resource for anyone interested in pain relief.--Larry Trivieri Jr.

Great new edition 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This edition has been phenomenally improved! I owned the original published more than thirty years ago. The photos and illustrations clearly demonstrate various tests, point locations, acupressure principles, etc. The binding and protective cover have been completely redesigned. This manual contains a wealth of proactive health balancing and maintainence information, well organized for those who are being first introduced to the system. The acupressure sections of the book contain a wealth of traditional and innovative new information presented clearly and concisely. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

With over ½ million copies in print since 1973, John Thie’s "Touch for Health" phenomenon has flourished worldwide to help more than 10 million people in over 40 countries restore their natural healing energies and enjoy vibrant health through his unique treatment of posture and muscle balancing that combines simple aspects of acupressure touch and massage. From this book, you will learn the techniques that chiropractors, alternative health specialists, athletic trainers, and massage therapists have found invaluable in preventive health-care treatment.

Editorial Review:

The Tapping Cure is an astoundingly easy and somewhat mystifying process that offers great results in the treatment of a variety of psychological problems. It takes only a few minutes, requires no medication and no talk therapy, and can completely erase a full range of negative emotions—from phobia, to trauma, to performance anxiety—in just a single session. In The Tapping Cure Dr. Temes, a seasoned psychotherapist, teaches readers how to tap themselves to eradicate their own symptoms. It is the first book of its kind to give precise instructions on where the tapping should occur—e.g., on the collarbone, under the eye, on the pinky—without resorting to mystical explanations, unscientific paradigms, and complicated pseudo-psychoanalytic rationalizations. The Tapping Cure is sure to help a great many people—psychological sufferers, the worried-well, and therapists with increasing numbers of patients requesting the treatment, which is fast becoming known in mainstream circles just like other once fringe therapies before it.

Editorial Review:

Once in a great while an extraordinary book is published that sets an entirely new standard in its field. A Manual of Acupuncture, published by Journal of Chinese Medicine Publications, is just such a book. Painstakingly researched over many years by Peter Deadman, editor-in-chief of The Journal of Chinese Medicine, and colleagues Mazin Al-Khafaji and Kevin Baker, this book has become the primary reference in the West for the study of acupuncture points and channels. With the subtle use of color to illustrate the acupuncture points and anatomical features, the new second edition of A Manual of Acupuncture is even more attractive and user-friendly than the first. Introductory chapters describe and illustrate the channels and collaterals, the various categories of points, and methods of selection, location, and needling. Ensuing chapters present each of the points of the 14 channels as well as the extra (miscellaneous) points, identified by their English and pinyin names, and Chinese characters. Each point is located in accordance with the most exacting anatomical standards to be found in any Western textbook. For each point there is a dedicated drawing, followed by regional body drawings. The quality of the 500 drawings is far superior to those in any other TCM text. There are also practical pointers for finding and needling the points, and cautionary information about what to avoid. In addition to point indexes by their English and pinyin names, there is an index identifying every part of the body reached by each of the channels, and separate indexes of point indications listed according to both TCM and biomedical symptoms.

I thought the therapy backfired... 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I did not read this book, but after seeing how well my niece was doing on the therapy and researching it from their web-site I too tried it out for six sessions. The certified NAET practitioner I chose to see had several levels of study for credentials, so I felt confident that I was being careful. I went for the therapy to relieve seasonal allergies that plague me during the summer, with the primary symptom being generalized fatigue.

I started the therapy at the end of March and continued every week for the next six weeks. I do not normally have symptoms in March from allergies. I had symptoms after every session which abated after a day or two, but I was not concerned as I was reporting these to the practitioner. Some of the sessions "did not take" and had to be repeated, which is from my understanding a possible occurrence.

After six weeks I stopped because I did not yet see any benefit from the therapy, except for this one which was unexpected: I had been suffering from gastric reflux on a daily basis for the last six months and that completely resolved.

On the negative side, I had the WORST summer I have ever had in my entire life. I am talking about a lying-on-the-couch funk which lasted the entire summer into early fall. No respite, no amount of sleep or vitamins or exercise would shake the heavy feeling of tiredness.

As I had never experienced this level of fatigue before with my allergies, and have tried no other therapies beforehand, I think there is a definite possibly that the NAET therapy either caused or contributed to this situation. After all, if I had had the best summer of my life I would have attributed it to the therapy, surely we can say the same when the opposite happens.

It is now December and I have recovered, though I was so tired that my work suffered (self-employed) and I fell behind on my income production by several thousand dollars. Therefore, think carefully before you try this and ask yourself if you are willing to risk that the therapy will backfire?

Not all bad, but there are alternatives 3 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I was given a copy of this book when I signed up for training courses in the Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It isn't all bad, and I learned a lot from it. The problem is that one can learn so much more from other texts such as Maciocia's Foundations of Chinese Medicine and Deadman, Mazin and Baker's A Manual of Acupuncture. This book tries to be comprehensive, but it is, at times, incomprehensible. For example, Maciocia's writings on TCM Syndrome Differentiation is much easier to comprehend than the equivalent chapters here. In fact, I found myself studying Foundations instead of this book for such topics as the 8 principles. This book also assumes too much. It does not recognize the fact that most westerners cannot readily grasp the marked differences in western and eastern philosophy. Again, this is a topic that Foundations (and Web that has no Weaver) covers much more excellently.

Ultimately, if you must purchase only ONE book on Chinese medicine, this is neither the best nor the worst you can find, but it will be adequate. Otherwise, I highly recommend that you check out various Listmanias (Jeffrey Chapman's is quite excellent) for alternatives.

This has great information on what to focus on during your asana practice. Will improve your knowledge of anatomy and provide an energetic jumpstart to your practice if you use it right.

Good medical information 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I liked this book very much and will keep it as part of my Ayuervedic library. It has very detailed and useful medical information. I was a little disappointed with the lack of spiritual information and spiritual tie-in to our physical parts. But over all a very good reference book.

Editorial Review:

This is the first book on marma therapy published in the West. It clearly describes the 107 main marma points in location, properties and usage. It explains in detail how to treat them with many methods including massage, aromas, herbs and yoga practices. Ayurveda and Marma Therapy is an essential reference guide for all students of Yoga, Ayurveda, massage or natural healing.

A Mixed Bag 3 out of 5 stars.
34 of 38 people found this review helpful.

This book is huge, even though it's only about 34 diseases. It's filled with case studies that easily transform into CA state board test questions.

My study partner went through and pulled every one of these case studies out to memorize them. I found myself doing the same, since I disagreed with Giovanni's diagnosis about 25% of the time... I had to memorize his diagnosis anyway. In one case, he got no result, and consulted with a Chinese doctor, who diagnosed the patient the way I had when I firsted saw the signs and symptoms!

What's really infuriating is when he uses a rationale to diagnose something one way in one place, but then doesn't consistently apply that in other cases.

So, we are required to know Giovanni's opinions and diagnosis style even if they may be wrong. It would have been nice to see - in a reference book - a separation between mistaken treatments and ideal/accurate treatments.

Also, there are short sections on western diagnosis in some diseases... but be careful, because biomedicine frequently revises its understandings. This is NOT your source for clinical biomedical info. It may be easy to understand, but may not be up to date or accurate.

There is an interesting section on distal points and their target areas.

As with Giovanni's book, the Foundations of Chinese Medicine, it's not always clear if his ideas come from classical CM or from his own mind. I'd caution the reader to balance their understanding with the works of Wiseman, Deadman, and Sionneau.

Editorial Review:

The new edition of this popular clinical text describes the application of traditional Chinese medical theory to the diagnosis and treatment of up to 48 diseases, conditions and disorders. In addition to the existing 34 covered in the first edition, 14 new conditions and symptoms have been added, and these include common, chronic and acute conditions which clinicians may see in their practice. Each chapter contains aetiology and pathology; differential diagnosis according to TCM; selection of treatments with acupuncture and herbs, with explanation of choices; case studies for illustration; summary of Western differential diagnosis; and discussion of prognosis and prevention. This book again brings the enormous wealth of the author's experience, and his insights in applying TCM medicine to a Western context, to the support of all clinicians whatever their own range of experiences.
