This is a beautiful book 5 out of 5 stars.

I gave Dianne Connelly's book on the Five Elements to my mother, an artist, because it clearly describes the art of Chinese medicine. It lifts the veil from the mysteries of a healing tradition that expresses a deep respect for nature and wellness. The British school of acupuncture often looks deeper than quick-fix Chinese medicine by reaching for the source of imbalance.. It is well worth looking in to. I recommend it to readers of ASIAN HEALTH SECRETS and anyone interested in PERSONAL RENEWAL.

Good, basic info. on five element acupuncture practice 3 out of 5 stars.

There's surprisingly little info. "out there" about five element acupuncture, first taught by J.R. Worsley, originally of the U.K. This book provides some of the only written info. you'll find, and because of that, is fairly helpful. If more were written, this book might seem kind of basic/generic, but there's an absolute paucity of available info., so it's actually very helpful, by default. The author studied with J.R. Worsley in England, and breaks down what the five elements are like re: health and treatment through this unusual, rare form of acupuncture.

Another view 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Very limited in the numbers of points used. There is no conceptual or methodical explanation for the points selected. Very interesting that she uses the same treatments for multiple ailments. I have no regrets in reading and purchasing this material. But then again, I read everything on acupuncture that I can get a hold of. It shall remain in my acupuncture library.

Superb and thought provoking!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

A must read for all acupuncturists. Set against a background of Miriam's
experiences as the person who brought acupuncture to the U.S, the book
is really about how an acupuncture "formula" or combination can be used
for many, many conditions by changes in how it is applied. This book is
one that changed the way I understand acupuncture and I thank Miriam for
sharing her knowledge in such a simple and powerful way.

Editorial Review:

This book details the ingenious use of only five major acupuncture points to effectively treat a wide variety of ills. Written by one of the most experienced and well-known acupuncturists in California, this book is a must read for students and practitioners alike. It is written in a deceptively simple, unpretentious style characteristic of its author, but readers should not be deceived. The theory it contains is profound, stemming from the Four Great Masters of the Jin-Yuan dynasties.

Brilliant! Why hasn't anyone written about this before? 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm a drinker who has struggled on and off with booze for years and I'm ecstatic someone has finally written about a more organic approach to problem drinking. This book gave me a different perspective. I was especially interested in how chinese and ayurvedic medicine treat drinkers and the concept of "balancing" my life so booze becomes less important and I drink less.

This book opened my mind up. I guess no ones written about alternative medicine to address alcohol abuse because the disease concept and AA are so deeply ingrained in the US.

Editorial Review:

MODERATE DRINKING REVOLUTION is the first book to explore the fascinating world of alternative medicine to reduce alcohol craving and consumption, maintain and enjoy moderate drinking and prevent alcoholism.

Commonsense tips, nutritional supplements and Western, Homeopathic, Chinese and Ayurvedic herbal remedies to conquer alcohol craving, elevate mood and promote physical, mental and spiritual balance so one no longer feels the need for alcohol are investigated.

This revolutionary book finally adds a natural medicine school to alcoholism prevention and treatment and is a breakthrough for drinkers, alcohol abuse and healthcare professionals!

A must have for practitioners meridian acupuncture 5 out of 5 stars.
75 of 75 people found this review helpful.

As the name implies, meridian based acupuncture places a prime importance on the meridian system in both the diagnosis and treatment of disease and dysfunction in the body. It is often called classical acupuncture because its theory is based on ancient classical texts like the "Ling Shu", the "Su Wen" and the "Nan Jing."

Meridian based acupuncture contrasts with the herbalized form of acupuncture taught in most TCM schools in the USA today. Where herbalized acupuncture has strict anatomical location of acupuncture points and assigns functions to points based on the "Eight Principles" like clearing, harmonizing, tonifying and reducing in order to effect the Zang-Fu, meridian based acupuncture stresses palpation to locate points and ascribes two functions to points... tonifying deficiency and reducing excess.

Until recently information on classical meridian based acupuncture was only available in workshops from practitioners like Miki Shima, Kiiko Matsumoto, Jefferey Yuen, Mark Seem and others. A few books on the Japanese style of meridian based acupuncture are available ("Introduction to Meridian Therapy, Denmei and Brown") and Mark Seem's books are based on meridian acupuncture ("A New American Acupuncture".)

Just as the body is viewed as a series of energetic zones and levels in meridian style acupuncture, Pirog designed his book in five sections leading step by step to a deeper understanding and application of Meridian Style acupuncture.

Pirog begins on a superficial level by laying out the basics of Meridian Style acupuncture: (1) finding and needling locally tender ahshi points, (2) determining the meridian(s) involved and (3) needling key distal points of the involved or energetically related meridian.

From here Pirog moves to a deeper understanding of the body's meridian complex, including the importance of secondary vessels in diagnosis and treatment. Pirog devotes a large part of the book to a discussion of the energetic function and therapeutic use of the classical groupings of acupuncture points: Luo-connecting, Xi-cleft, the Five-Shu transporting points, etc.

Where a standard TCM textbook makes a simple statement like "The He-sea points are used to treat the Fu organs", Pirog uses references from the Nan Jing and discussions of the Chinese characters to bring the energetics of the point to life. For instance, the character "He" translates as "uniting" or "connecting" giving the point the energetic function of connecting the meridian to the inner body with the ability to drain energy from the meridian into the body, hence its ability to treat the internal Fu organs. But the point has additional important functions. It can also draw excess energy from the inner body. It "connects" the distal and proximal segments of the meridian allowing the point to harmonize the meridian especially in cases of pain in the Yang meridians. Finally, because the He-sea points connect the "river" of the meridian to the "sea" of the body they may be used to treat systemic conditions. This explains why the He-sea point, LI-11, is often seen in point prescriptions for skin conditions.

Pirog also presents treatment plans for musculoskeletal pain and deficiency patterns, two commonly seen complaints in clinical practice. Using the teachings of Ngueyen Van Nghi as his basis, Pirog lays out a sophisticated method for determining the energetic location and depth of a disorder and treating it accordingly. Variations to the basic treatments include the use of Luo and Extraordinary Vessels, treating musculoskeletal pain caused by underlying organ pathology and treating systemic pain conditions for the patient who "hurts everywhere."

The book uses ample tables and illustrations and each section is cross referenced making the book very useful for the studious scholar as well as the busy clinician. It is a "must have" for any practitioner who has been to a meridian acupuncture workshop and wished there was a textbook available.

Editorial Review:

The martial arts world is rife with tales of ancient masters who could cause instant or delayed death or illness by attacking secret points on the human body. But to the Western mind, the concept of striking acupuncture points to disrupt the internal energy, or chi, seems like hocus-pocus. Thus, many serious martial artists dismiss the ancient art of dim-mak (also known as kyusho jitsu), which is literally translated as "death touch," as nothing more than fiction. However, if one can accept the idea that a dim-mak point is an avenue for attacking the nervous system, then it becomes easier to understand how striking specific points or groups of points can devastate the organs and the cardiovascular system. In this book, Dr. Michael Kelly, an osteopathic physician and experienced dim-mak practitioner, explains dim-mak's effects based on medical science. In layman's terms, Dr. Kelly reveals the physiological basis for what is clearly a very real and dangerous method of fighting. In the process of unraveling the mystery of this legendary art, Dr. Kelly makes the true genius of its founders brutally, and painfully, apparent.

A practical guide & other stuff 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book gives very good guidelines and clear, precise instructions that will broaden the scope of treatment of any inquisitive TCM practitioner and/or student. Ilkay Chirali does an excellent job in presenting interesting applications of the cups, many of which will be totally new for a lot of people.

The book contains many clear pictures of cups, their different forms of application (ten methods of cupping, wow!), and also pictures that can help the practitioner explain to the patient the effects of the treatment. The section on treatment of specific conditions is very illustrative, and will be welcome by practitioners who are not afraid to try new things.

There are, however, a couple of weak spots. I acknowledge the effort of Mr. Chirali in researching and providing information on the background of cupping, but I would have liked to see more of that from the Chinese side. Most of the information in the first chapter dwells on cupping in the west. This material, although interesting, may not entirely be within the scope of the book (not at such length, anyway, in my opinion), and there are no quotes from Chinese books and only very little historical information on the development of cupping in the East. I would also have liked the author to discuss at length the Chinese theories on the workings of the cups, as well as to tie it in with the theories of chinese physiology TCM students are more familiar with.

There is a section on integrating cupping with other therapies, such as reflexology, aromatherapy, chiropractic, and so on. Although I agree that the benefits of cupping can very easily be extended to these other modalities of treatment, it also falls outside of the scope of a book entitled "Traditional Chinese Medicine Cupping Therapy". This information might well broaden the potential readership of the book in general, but to the acupuncture student (such as myself) these pages are not exactly useful.

It shines through the text that the author knows and loves his subject, with which he has had contact since he was very young. It is, all in all, a great, practical book, and I hope many practitioners will read it and add its contents to their treatment repertoires.

Editorial Review:

How can we get on the road to true happiness, peace, and equanimity? Is it possible to find it in this lifetime? The Only Way Out Is In, addresses these questions and gives an answer to man's relentless lifelong quest of looking outside oneself and chasing this inevitable illusion when the answer is simply to look within! This book offers guidance for each individual to look inside and live in the here and now, using the ancient practices of Ashtanga Yoga, Ayurveda, and Tantra in daily living. It affirms that the way "In," can be found by the practices of self-study offered by these three sciences. Utilizing the synergy of the three is one of the most powerful practices for the journey within. Each one has it's own unique qualities of clearing, building, and cultivating the needed energy to ascend. Ashtanga Yoga does this through the practices of yogic postures, breathing, and awareness techniques while using the body as a vehicle for transformation. Ayurveda assists each individual by creating a blueprint for which to live a healthy, vibrant life, as well as to understand your own unique place in the natural order of the Universe. Tantra guides readers further within by connecting people with their own inherent wisdom through the concept of loving yourself first and foremost. Out of cultivating this love of yourself, people naturally share the abundance with everyone and everything. Carlisi's book demystifies these esoteric practices in a user-friendly way. He lures the reader "In" by describing vividly and vulnerably his own trials and tribulations along the Yogic path. He does this by clearly creating a usable "map" for life, that he developed over 30 years of self research as a practitioner of these 3 sciences.

Excellent Atlas!! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book, and I am still kicking myself for having bought a different book first.
Some pros:
- This book contains ALL the points, not just the "important" ones
- The categories, functions, and indications for each point are listed
- The pictures are full-color drawings and include all the underlying structures (muscles, bones, etc), not just surface anatomy -- and they are high quality DRAWINGS and not photographs (having a photo of a naked woman for illustration purposes [found in a similar-looking acupuncture atlas] may be helpful, but not so when you have to take the train or bus to school and have to constantly cover up your pages)
- The paper is high-quality glossy paper that will stand up to years of flipping through the pages
- There is a FANTASTIC general information section in the beginning of the book, with some of the best 3D pulse illustrations I've ever seen

I hope this was helpful!!

Editorial Review:

Provides the reader with an overview of the history of acupuncture in China and Europe. It describes the underlying principles of Chinese medicine and how it differs from Western Medicine.
