Editorial Review:

Trigger point therapy is one of the most intriguing and fastest-growing bodywork styles in the world. Medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, and massage therapists are all beginning to use this technique to relieve formerly undiagnosable muscle and joint pain—conditions that studies have shown to be the cause of nearly 25 percent of all doctor visits. The technique involves applying short, repeated massage strokes to trigger points, tiny contraction knots in muscle tissue where restricted circulation and lack of oxygen cause referred pain. Trigger points create pain throughout the body in predictable patterns characteristic to each muscle, producing discomfort ranging from mild to severe. Trigger point massage increases circulation and oxygenation in the area and often produces instant relief. This dynamic technique has made a huge impact among health professionals and the public alike, becoming an overnight classic in the field of pain relief. The book has sold over 145,000 copies since the release of the first edition in 2001. The second edition is a complete update and includes a new chapter specifically for massage professionals, as well as a chapter on systematic muscle relaxation techniques that can reinforce the therapeutic power of trigger point work.

Book is good, but be warned 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The book does clearly state that for some people..the extension position might be harmful. That was the case for me. While I ended up on crutches (for the first time due to severe increased pain) I do not blame the book. Just be extremely careful. When I began...I actually felt some relief WHILE in extension at the start, but it would hurt worse as time spent in the position increased. And I hurt worse when I got up. So...it only took about 3 times of that before I became non-amb. w/o crutches. Then it took perhaps 6 mo. with the help of a good chiro. (traction, ultrasound and manipulation at 1x week) before I was out of pain. It's been 2 years since that incident and I've not had any diffficulty since. I totally avoid any extension positions beyond that which occur naturally in walking (even freestyle swimming puts noticible pressure on my LB due to the extension of bouyancy. Back stroke and floating are OK).

Best wishes and prayers to anyone combatting back pain. I'm a fairly strong and positive person. But after being in chronic pain for several months with difficulty and pain in EVERYTHING I did, including breathing, I fully understand the severe depression and mounting hopelessness chronic pain brings. When I began to have thoughts that living like that would be impossible, in spite of having young daughters, a great husband and great job...I became very scared.

Keep searching for an answer. I went through 3 chiropractors and much time before I found the right one. Keep your faith, keep your resolve, keep on praying and keep on trying.

Editorial Review:

Powerful Techniques to Relieve Shoulder Pain and Stiffness

Author Clair Davies’ own case of frozen shoulder led him to undertake an extensive study of trigger points and referred pain that eventually resulted in his best-selling Trigger Point Therapy Workbook. Now this renowned bodywork expert and educator revisits the subject of frozen shoulder, offering the most detailed and comprehensive manual available for this painful and debilitating condition, a useful resource for self-care—with and without a partner—and for bodywork practitioners looking to expand their treatment repertoire.

Frozen shoulder, the syndrome name for several joint and tendon-related symptoms, is experienced as a loss of motion and pain in the shoulder and upper arm. It is most often observed in women between the ages of forty and sixty and individuals with type-two diabetes. Unlike traditional medical treatments for the condition, which rely on painkillers, steroid injections, and physical therapy and often do little to moderate symptoms or speed recovery, trigger point therapy can bring real and lasting relief. This gentle massage technique targets localized areas of tenderness in soft tissue. Put it to work for you to relieve pain, restore range of motion, and shorten recovery times.

A well-written exposition on a difficult subject. —Daniel J. Wallace, MD, clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine

In this outstanding book, Clair Davies aptly explains the rational for the trigger point approach based on the teachings of Drs. Janet Travell and David Simons to the treatment of frozen shoulder. He presents his hypothesis well. It is time for the medical profession to accept alternative therapies in treating this condition, which does not often respond to routine medical care. —Paul B. Brown, MD, Ph.D., rheumatologist and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Washington

Clair Davies has done it again. He has written a wonderful book that provides insight and practical advice for the treatment of a common problem: frozen or stiff shoulder. He shows where the pain is, what the problems are, and how an individual can treat it, sometimes with the help of a partner. His illustrations and directions are clear. His case examples are helpful. This is a very useful book for those who have had rotator cuff injuries or other shoulder problems. —Robert D. Gerwin, MD, president and medical director of Pain and Rehabilitation Medicine, Baltimore, MD, and the Janet G. Travell, MD, Seminar Series

Mr. Davies has done an outstanding job of tackling and simplifying a difficult topic that challenges even experienced clinicians. His review of the functional anatomy and kinesiology of the shoulder and the central role of the muscles in the control of the shoulder is a welcome review for physicians and therapists. His simple diagrams and descriptions make this topic understandable to those without formal training as well. Most importantly he shows very concrete ways in which a patient or clinician may effectively treat trigger points, which in my view are the primary cause of shoulder pain and stiffness in the majority of cases. I highly recommend this book to patients with shoulder pain and to clinicians involved in the evaluation and treatment of patients with shoulder pain. —Bryan J. O'Neill, MD, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University

From a practical point of view, this is a really exceptional workbook, which could become a best-seller in its field. It is a wonderful overview concerning trigger points, which are the most common cause of frozen shoulder. I can recommend the book to all who are engaged in treating frozen shoulders, including medical doctors, therapists, and patients together with their partners. —Dieter Pongratz, MD, professor in the department of Neurology at the University of Munich Hospital, Friedrich-Baur-Institute, in Munich, Germany

The Frozen Shoulder Workbook is truly a remarkable and comprehensive text that will be indispensable for patients with chronic shoulder pain. Written from a layperson’s perspective, it is very readable and well illustrated, but still has plenty of background science and anatomy to satisfy clinicians as well. The book outlines a thorough approach to myofascial pain in the shoulder region and provides multiple treatment strategies to address the clinical variations that are seen. I will highly recommend it to my shoulder pain patients. —Steven R. Shannon, MD, Pain and Rehabilitation Medicine, Baltimore, MD

Unbelievable... a borderline miracle.... 10++ stars 5 out of 5 stars.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!! I had back surgery 2 years ago (L1-L2 thru L3-L4 lumbar diskectomy) to relieve severe lower back pain and sciatica pain in the left leg. Although the surgery relieved the sciatica, regularly every 4-6 weeks I subsequently had recurring "episodes" which took 2-3 weeks to subside. I was walking, swimming, stretching, etc., all to no avail. Skelaxin and Mobic became my best friends during this period. A random Google search turned up this book by Jim Johnson (and the excellent 8/23/06 Amazon review by G. Brennan of LA,CA), and I decided "what the hell".... Bottom Line: It works. Period. I bought 2.5 lb. ankle weights, do the recommended exercises < 10 minutes/day every day, and 3-4 weeks later, my back pain has disappeared and the numbness in my left heel has disappeared 80%. BUY THIS BOOK. IT'LL BE THE BEST $10 YOU HAVE EVER SPENT IN YOUR LIFE.

Editorial Review:

New research suggests that most back pain is caused by underdeveloped multifidus muscles, those that connect the spinal vertebrae and are crucial in bending the back. This book presents exercises to strengthen the multifidus group. Simple explanations and black-and-white drawings throughout show readers how to work with these muscles.

I thought the therapy backfired... 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I did not read this book, but after seeing how well my niece was doing on the therapy and researching it from their web-site I too tried it out for six sessions. The certified NAET practitioner I chose to see had several levels of study for credentials, so I felt confident that I was being careful. I went for the therapy to relieve seasonal allergies that plague me during the summer, with the primary symptom being generalized fatigue.

I started the therapy at the end of March and continued every week for the next six weeks. I do not normally have symptoms in March from allergies. I had symptoms after every session which abated after a day or two, but I was not concerned as I was reporting these to the practitioner. Some of the sessions "did not take" and had to be repeated, which is from my understanding a possible occurrence.

After six weeks I stopped because I did not yet see any benefit from the therapy, except for this one which was unexpected: I had been suffering from gastric reflux on a daily basis for the last six months and that completely resolved.

On the negative side, I had the WORST summer I have ever had in my entire life. I am talking about a lying-on-the-couch funk which lasted the entire summer into early fall. No respite, no amount of sleep or vitamins or exercise would shake the heavy feeling of tiredness.

As I had never experienced this level of fatigue before with my allergies, and have tried no other therapies beforehand, I think there is a definite possibly that the NAET therapy either caused or contributed to this situation. After all, if I had had the best summer of my life I would have attributed it to the therapy, surely we can say the same when the opposite happens.

It is now December and I have recovered, though I was so tired that my work suffered (self-employed) and I fell behind on my income production by several thousand dollars. Therefore, think carefully before you try this and ask yourself if you are willing to risk that the therapy will backfire?

Incredible book 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book is absolutly incredible. It had me drawn in from page one. Dr. Upldeger writes in a way that is fun, easy to understand and intreguing. It opened a whole new world to me. There are a few ideas that seemed a little "out there" but as I took one of the upledger classes and as I've used Craniosacral Therapy in my practice I have seen that the body has no limits...and anything is possible. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone.

Editorial Review:

This lively book describes the discovery and therapeutic value of the craniosacral system in easy, understandable terms healthcare professionals and laypeople alike can understand. Dr. Upledger's colorful case histories explain the path that led to his discovery of this exciting medical modality. The book contains a play-by-play account of the development of CranioSacral Therapy, SomatoEmotional Release, and other concepts and techniques. It's recommended reading for therapists, patients, caregivers, and anyone interested in understanding how therapy performed on the craniosacral system can improve the quality of life.

Requisite Resource for Spine Physicians and Therapists 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This text is the "sine qua non" for spine physicians and therapists who focus on rehabilitation. It establishes a firm foundation for spinal stability and how this process becomes dysfunctional, discussing the neurophysiological, pathophysiological, and biopsychosocial dimensions of the patients we treat. Additionally, more information is provided for the cervical spine and upper and lower extremities. Moreover, the treatment procedures and accompanying DVD are excellent resources for the practitioner. Dr. Liebenson is to be praised and thanked for this needed update to the first edition. The international experts, including Dr. Liebenson, have provided an outstanding text. Many thanks!

Editorial Review:

The Guide to EKG Interpretation is designed as a practical guide for primary care physicians, students, nurses, physician’s assistants, and anyone else who interprets electrocardiograms as part of his or her practice. Unlike most other textbooks used to identify and interpret EKG tracings, The Guide to EKG Interpretation is designed to function in a dual role. If the reader wishes to look up bundle-branch blocks, there is a reference section discussing this abnormality in detail. If, however, the clinician notices only that there is QRS widening on the EKG, the problem-solving section of the handbook will help lead the clinician to that abnormality. This combination of functions and a convenient pocket size make The Guide to EKG Interpretation a useful pocket companion for the busy clinician or student. Based on a prototype and revised according to surveyed use, The Guide to EKG Interpretation is the first in a series of White Coat Pocket Guides, designed for practitioners in the field, and published in collaboration with the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

This clinical textbook explores the neurological impact of manual therapies. It explores and explains concepts, relationships and scientific
mechanisms of nervous system function that will aid the clinician in
understanding a wide variety of common patient presentations. The text serves to demystify the clinical results seen by practitioners of manual therapy and scientifically validates the clinical success, as well as
the limitations, of these approaches. This textbook is an ideal reference for health care professionals including neurologists, orthopaedists, chiropractors, osteopaths and physical and occupational therapists.
