Excellent Review for a low yield subject on the Boards 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is much more concise than the new version. This little book helps you put the H.Y. facts of embryo together not just as a subject on its own but in conjunction to pathology. I would specially recommend the first 3 chapters to get a quick idea of embryo genesis and the cardio, respiratory, GI sections for quick kill on the congenital abnormalities that are extensively talked about in Pathology. I particularly recommend to read the latter chapters alongside with Goljan's Rapid Review Pathology.

Editorial Review:

High-Yield(TM) Embryology, Third Edition provides a concise, focused review of the most important embryology information needed for the USMLE Step 1. Chapters cover prefertilization events and the embryonic period, embryologic development of each organ system, chromosomal abnormalities, inherited diseases, teratology and more. To prepare students for the clinical vignettes on the USMLE, the book includes numerous clinical cases with words and phrases that patients use. A mini-atlas at the end of each chapter presents photographs, MRIs, CT scans, and radiographs of various congenital malformations.

Essential aid for the Embryo section on the boards 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Overall, a very good book for mastering the embryology part for the Step 1 test. No other embryology text is needed for the boards other than this. This book is far more sufficient. Just make sure you actually know the material from this BRS text to smooth sail this section on the USMLE exam! It is a must to have for Step 1.

Editorial Review:

BRS Embryology, Fourth Edition is a succinct outline-format review for USMLE and course exams, with USMLE-style questions at the end of each chapter and a comprehensive USMLE-style examination at the end of the book. The book also includes radiographs, sonograms, computed tomography scans, and photographs of various congenital malformations. This updated edition has a new organization: prefertilization through the embryonic period; system by system; genetic abnormalities; and teratology. The chapter on structural chromosomal abnormalities has been substantially revised. This edition's review questions are in the clinical vignette-based format of the current USMLE. A companion Website offers the fully searchable online text and an interactive question bank.

Editorial Review:

The bitter national debates over abortion, euthanasia, and stem cell research have created an unbridgeable gap between religious groups and those who insist that faith-based views have no place in public policy. Religious conservatives are so adamantly opposed to stem cell research in particular that President Bush issued the first veto of his presidency over a bill that would have provided federal funding for such research.

Now, in this timely consideration of the nature and rights of human embryos, Robert P. George and Christopher Tollefsen make a persuasive case that we as a society should neither condone nor publicly fund embryonic stem cell research of any kind.

Typically, right-to-life arguments have been based explicitly on moral and religious grounds. In Embryo, the authors eschew religious arguments and make a purely scientific and philosophical case that the fetus, from the instant of conception, is a human being, with all the moral and political rights inherent in that status. As such, stem cell research that destroys a viable embryo represents the unacceptable taking of a human life.

There is also no room in their view for a “moral dualism” that regards being a “person” as merely a stage in a human life span. An embryo does not exist in a “prepersonal” stage that does not merit the inviolable rights otherwise ascribed to persons. Instead, the authors argue, the right not to be intentionally killed is inherent in the fact of being a human being, and that status begins at the moment of conception.

Moreover, just as none should be excluded from moral and legal protections based on race, sex, religion, or ethnicity, none should be excluded on the basis of age, size, or stage of biological development.

George and Tollefsen fearlessly grapple with the political, scientific, and cultural consequences arising from their position and offer a summary of scientific alternatives to embryonic stem cell research. They conclude that the state has an ethical and moral obligation to protect embryonic human beings in just the same manner that it protects every other human being, and they advocate for embryo adoption—the only ethical solution to the problem of spare embryos resulting from in-vitro fertilization.

Editorial Review:

Imagine being able to observe with astonishing clarity a child's delicate features as they evolve over the course of a pregnancy, or witness the complex behavior of new human life in utero. Now we can, thanks to the advent of innovative 3D and 4D imaging technologies that provide a powerful diagnostic tool for doctors and cast vivid light on our earliest development—and a profound new way for parents to bond with their babies on a deeper emotional level.

Combining more than 140 images of life-like models based on the latest science, computer-generated illustrations, and 3D ultrasound images with an uplifting, informative text, In the Womb is a week-by-week chronicle of the mysterious, magical progress from embryo to fetus to full-term infant.

Each spread features a central image and information about that particular stage as well as brief commentary explaining what we know and how we know it. For example, at 24 weeks we watch a fetus open and close her eyes, display facial expressions resembling a grimace and a frown, and stick out her tongue (no one has yet established exactly why). And during the last trimester, we learn, she experiences REM sleep and can hear loud noises through the fluids of her mother's body—a first hint of the world that awaits outside the womb.

Based on National Geographic's acclaimed television program, originally aired in 2005 and soon to be supplemented with two more 2-hour segments, In the Womb is the perfect gift for expectant parents and a fascinating perspective for anyone captivated by the miracle of life.

Well written and great resource for experienced readers 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent embryology text IF you already have some background in medical anatomy, morphology, or embryology. Otherwise I reccomend "Before we are born" by the same authors. Same information but less dense and more easily read by a lay audience. The Developing Human is a very dense text and it has excellent clinical correlations in each chapter. This is a book intended for medical or graduate students, so be pack your lunch before sitting down to go through a chapter. I like the illustrations, but some of them (the cross sections) will require a bit of mental gymnastics before they become clear - but once you get it, they are a very helpful way to understand how the 3D structures are being represented. The new edition has expanded some chapters, simplified SOME of the concepts, and most importantly, it keeps current with new developments in the field and nomenclature. I teach medical gross anatomy, embryology, and musculoskeletal system courses to first year medical students.

Editorial Review:

Univ. of Toronto, Canada. Brandon/Hill Medical List selection (#36). Textbook includes case studies; 3D images, clinical photographs, and other illustrations; new terminology; and updated problems and answers based on the USMLE Step 1. Previous edition: c1998. Softcover. DNLM: Embryology.

Editorial Review:

Stem cell research is headline news. Researchers are eager to move forward, state governments and private foundations are rushing to support it, and the sick and afflicted are desperate for its benefits. Yet powerful forces in our society—led by President George W. Bush—find it morally troubling and they are doing all in their powers to restrict its development beyond a very limited scale. Stem cells have the potential to develop into different parts of the body—skin, bone, nerves, blood, and more. Scientists usually harvest them from aborted fetal tissue or newly fertilized cells. This procedure has proved very unacceptable to the religious right. They argue that even a newly fertilized cell is fully human and has all of the rights of full-grown adults, and they find any use of aborted fetuses abhorrent. Given the medical potential for treatment of incurable diseases by stem cell research, as well as the moral dilemmas this technology poses, should such research be permitted? What moral, religious, or political objections might be raised? Philosophers Michael Ruse and Christopher A. Pynes have compiled this valuable, up-to-date, and newly revised collection of articles by noted experts to address all aspects of the stem cell controversy. The contributors—scientists, medical practitioners, philosophers, theologians, historians, and policy analysts—offer a variety of perspectives to give readers the critical tools they need to shape an informed position on the topic. Readers will come away with a deeper understanding of the science of stem cell research, its medical cures and promises, and the moral, religious, and policy concerns surrounding this controversial social issue.

Answers all questions about what is under our skin 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My preschool grandchildren wanted to know what was under our skin. Their parents tried to explain but only when shown this book with its pictures did they seem to understand what they were being told about the human body. They are fascinated with the illustrations, especially the baby in uterus. From the other room, after much time explaining the pictures in the book, we heard the older child tell the younger one, "I mean my beating heart inside, not the red valentine one!" They will be able to reference this volume for years to come to answer their questions.

Editorial Review:

This book presents an anatomical overview of the changing form and structure of the human body. Although biomechanical embryology can be traced back to the 19th century, up until recently the most commonly accepted framework for the study of human ontogeny (development of the individual) was molecular biology, which all too frequently relied on findings from animal experiments that remained untested for humans. German embryologist and anatomist Erich Blechschmidt's research concentrates on the evidence presented by the human embryo itself. He offers a new approach to the study of early human growth as a way to shed light on the development of body build, instincts, gestures, language, mathematics, tools, and dress.
