great understanding of human health 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have read dozens of books on how to stay healthy and fit. In my opinion Hulda Clark's understanding of what went wrong and how to correct it are right on the mark.
To put everything into practice can be cumbersome and will require lifestyle changes. I've done some things. The results are worth it.

Not the book you are looking for! 1 out of 5 stars.

This book offers nothing. If this book held any answers, we should all just take the bridge right now. The answers we are all looking for are found in one book. You know what book I am talking about! Don't waist your hard earned money on this nonsense. For our physical health, eat right, avoid abuses, be active and seek medical treatment when needed. For our mental health, don't worry, make God your best friend and talk to him everyday. Our salvation is in GOD, period.

Editorial Review:

All diseases have simple explanations and cures once their true cause is known. Doctor Hulda Clark explains the causes of both common and extraordinary diseases and gives specific instruction for their cure through natural remedies and an electrical device you can build at home. 4 cassettes.

I like the book so far. Its is compact yet readable. If you have used Lippincott for Biochemistry this book is similar in size, and has a similar layout as the Bichem book. If you attend SMU I recommend also ordering Katzung Board review for practice questions as Dr.K and Dr.G will recommend that you purchase it.

Editorial Review:

Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Pharmacology, Fourth Edition enables rapid review and assimilation of large amounts of complex information about the essentials of medical pharmacology. Content has been thoroughly updated, and a new chapter covers toxicology. New to this edition will be a companion Website containing all of the illustrations, fully searchable text, and an interactive question bank. Politically Incorrect, Yet Spiritually Relevant 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Aldous Huxley was ahead of his time. And yet, he was right where he needed to be. In a time when modern society had not quite caught on to the mind-expanding powers of psycho-active drugs, psychology was still interested in how they might be used in a beneficial way. Thus, Huxley, one of the most dedicated thinkers of a generation, was able to participate in and produce feedback for, a controlled psychological experiment in which he used mescalin to produce an altered state of consciousness. That anyone could participate in such an experiment today and go on to write candidly about it seems unthinkable.

Today our lust for political correctness has rendered such ideas as the ones expressed in "The Doors of Perception" and "Heaven and Hell" to be nearly unspeakable. These two short books are combined in one book, and complement each other. I believe it is only Huxley's reputation as a creative author, poet, philosopher and thinker that has allowed this work to be taken seriously at all, and to remain part of our collective past.

Certainly, one cannot read his lucid chronicle of his mescalin experience in "The Doors of Perception" or his evaluation of it in the remainder of that book or in the book "Heaven and Hell" which follows it, and believe he saw no merit in the judicious use of psycho-active substances. Huxley describes both psycho-active drugs and hypnosis as tools for accessing what he calls the "antipodes" of the mind. And yet, society has such a social stigma about trying to do that by whatever means.

As a certified hypnotherapist, I can say that society is still mostly in ignorance of the usefulness of hypnosis as a profound tool for accessing realms of the mind that are typically unaccessible. The use of a mind-altering drug for such a purpose has fallen into deep disfavor, with the anti-drug advocates lumping psychadelic drugs in the same category as narcotics and other dangerous drugs. And yet, indigenous cultures have used them for attaining spiritual visions and experiences for as long as they have been available to use, and continue to use them to this day.

The desire to transcend the human mind is as old as humanity. It is the natural result of enlightenment, often achieved only after many years of meditation and intense spiritual practice. And yet, Huxley himself was able to achieve this, at least temporarily, through the use of mescalin. In his own words: "For the moment that interfering neurotic who, in waking hours, tries to run the show, was blessedly out of the way."

I believe Huxley saw the use of psychadelic drugs as a useful tool for opening the normally very filtered awareness of the conscious mind to perceptions that are usually inaccessible. While they have great power, they should also be respected. Yes, there may have been excessive use and misuse of it in the 1960s and 70s, but that is also the period that produced some of the greatest social and creative breakthroughs we take for granted today: things like civil rights, women's liberation and music legends. It is good to step back once in a while and take in the big picture.

Huxley experienced the ability of a psycho-active drug to take its user to much more expanded and profound levels of consciousness, levels rich with possibility, long before the social activism of the 1960s. And yet, his book most likely influenced the willingness of that generation to experiment with such substances, a generation that demanded change as a result of its shared vision and experience.

I was surprised to note as I was preparing this review that this copy, which is at least 30 years old, was printed on 100% recycled paper. This was long before it became fashionable for the publishing industry to be "green" and "earth friendly". Again, this book was ahead of its time. The pages of my copy of this classic are thoroughly yellowed. Unfortunately, at that time recycled paper was not also available as acid-free, so the pages have weathered with time.

Moonstone Star White is the author of High Way from Hell: Using Emotion to Fan the Fire of Enlightment.

Editorial Review:

As only he can, Aldous Huxley explores the mind's remote frontiers and the unmapped areas of human consciousness. These two astounding essays are among the most profound studies of the effects of mind-expanding drugs written in this century.

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I own the 2nd ed. and am looking forward to owning the 3rd. This was recommended to me when I first started Critical Care (CC) Nursing 6 years ago and I have yet to find anything even close. I love the fact a physician wrote it. The information is much more clear than any CC nursing text/book I have bought. ... and I have tons. It follows more closely to the medical model, not a nursing format... ie. it doesn't include nursing diagnosis or nursing care. I feel much more confident discussing patients with colleagues, families and patients after looking up my facts in this book. As mentioned in other reviews, some may not think of this as a 'quick reference' book, but I know if I have it with me I am always referring to it. It's heavy because the print is large (also mentioned in other reviews) making it thick, but really is quite concise in all it's explanations. I would purchase this book for anyone involved in Critical Care.

Editorial Review:

Univ. of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Concise, comprehensive handbook focusing on fundamental generic principles rather than highly specialized areas (i.e., burns, etc.). For ICU physicians and trainees. Previous edition: c1991. Softcover. DNLM: Intensive Care Units.

Edgar Cayce reincarnated 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I am reviewing the ninth edition (2006) of Dr. Baroody's book, Alkalize or Die. Dr. Baroody's book has helped me understand the relationship between acid-forming foods and alkaline-forming foods, yet I must say it required some level of discernment to sift the wheat from the chaff.

One of the positive features to Dr. Baroody's approach to healthful living is his recognition of each person's unique biochemistry. Throughout this book he continues to remind his readers that each person is an individual and therefore might experience variant results when compared to other people.

It is important to understand that Dr. Baroody's theories and principals are based as largely on his personal alternative health experiences (trial and error) as they are on any demonstrable medical science. It is also important to know that Dr. Baroody gives much credence to the metaphysical teachings of eastern spiritualism, which may be a detractor to some readers. In the book's introduction, Dr. Baroody writes, "My viewpoint is founded on ancient Hindu, Chinese, Tibetan, and Greco-European healing philosophies and on several great modern men in the field of health." One of these "great modern men" is Edgar Cayce, who is referenced as an authority many times throughout the book.

So long as the reader is a proponent of New Age and/or Eastern spiritualism, this book should be quite acceptable. For those of us who are more Western in their worldview, the book requires discernment to pick and choose what you care to take from it.

An example of how Dr. Baroody's metaphysical beliefs influence his dietary advice can be seen in his counsel for reducing the consumption of red meat: "The destructive emotion of slaughter is assimilated by the person who eats flesh." (pg. 63). For many, this statement might resonate well with their worldview, but for others this statement will likely be challenged as to it's applicability to the subject of acidity/alkalinity.

Dr. Baroody's experience in the alternative health field appears to be quite extensive. No doubt he has learned a lot from published medical research and other practitioners, yet much of what he proposes in this book is admittedly derived from his own experience; some of which he still doesn't fully understand himself (for example, read chapter 4 on the "Vagus Nerve"). Those readers who are looking for a book filled with footnotes and documented scientific research will be disappointed with this work.

What I found most helpful in the book is Dr. Baroody's exhaustive list of foods with a corresponding rating as to their alkaline-forming or acid-forming properties. Dr. Baroody abandons the conventional 0-7-14 pH scale in favor of a scale he developed to measure alkaline-forming and acid-forming foods. Dr. Baroody's scale (pg. 38) ranges from 0.5 to 7.5. All foods below 4.0 are acid-forming and all foods above 4.0 are alkaline-forming.

The chart I refer to above is alone worth the price of the book. Depending on the readers religious and scientific convictions, the rest of the book may or may not be appreciated.

Good trainer's reference. 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have added this book to my others as a good reference for assembling Reiki training classes. As with all manuals of this type, the author presents the information from her perspective, based on her experience and expertise. The reader must take what works and leave the rest, which is fine. Stein is a fine author and instructor and I applaud her approach to opening the doors to Reiki. I found her negative references to male participation in this healing art unnecessary. It served to distract from her overall purpose and credibility of her text and was best left out of print.

spiritual enlightenment 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was recommended to me by my Reiki Teacher before beginning my Reiki Training. That was about 2 years ago and I still can't seem to put this book down. It is full of information. For anyone who wants to open their minds to Reiki this is book is an absolute must.

From self healing, group healing and healing others, to the Master Symbol and passing Attunements, this work demystifies the secrets of this ancient art.

Excellent book 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Having read articles and hearing about the benefits of vinegar, I was anxious to read this book. Not only does Cal Orey present the benefits and healing power of vinegar, she combines it with the history and definition of vinegar. Her collection of stories and different kinds of vinegars, along with the many treatments, like the prevention of food poisoning, as well as how to make your own flavored vinegar and delicious recipes. Cal treats us to the surprising benefits of a staple almost everyone has on their shelf.
I've heard of wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar and cider vinegar but I never knew about rice vinegar, herbal vinegars or fruit flavored vinegars among others she mentions. I discovered how different vinegars prevent cancer, prevent bone loss, help with weight loss and even help you live longer. This is one book I'm keeping on the shelf next to my cookbooks.

Editorial Review:

Vinegar has been used since ancient times to relieve many common ailments, from dandruff to acne. Nature's most remarkable RX also is a fat fighter and disease fighter which new research shows in The Healing Powers of Vinegar.

A Good Prep Book 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Over the summer of 2008 I prepared for the PCAT mainly with the Kaplan 2008-2009 PCAT test prep book. The chapters of the Kaplan book covering the verbal, reading, writing and biology sections are all great review with lots of good information and great tips for performing well on those sections. The two practice tests at the end were also fairly helpful overall for extra review and getting acclimated to the actual length of the PCAT.

That being said I felt that the Kaplan book did a somewhat poor job with the math and chemistry review. The organic chemistry chapter in the Kaplan book is a joke and does not go into enough detail. It merely covered basic functional group identification, simple IUPAC naming, and basic molecular orbital theory (sigma/pi bonds, bond order). The actual PCAT asked a good number questions pertaining to aromaticity and predicting products of basic organic transformations like SN1 reactions, hydride reductions, oxidations, and addition-eliminations. However, the Kaplan book did NOT even mention ANY actual organic reactions. And although the general chemistry review is good preparation, the math chapters fail to cover a small portion of calculus and trigonometry. Kaplan's review of calculus like basic derivatives, integrals, and limits is helpful but it did not address implicit derivatives and integrations by parts--both of which were on the actual PCAT. Although, there were only two or three trig questions on the actual PCAT, I feel that a small trig review would have been useful. Despite those faults, the Kaplan book does a great job reviewing statistics, algebra, and pre-calculus. The majority of PCAT math questions tested knowledge of the latter math topics, which Kaplan reviewed very well.

Overall I would recommend purchasing this book for PCAT preparation--especially if you're in need of a great biology review. However, I would take the official PCAT practice tests to prepare for the math and chemistry sections and treat the Kaplan review of these topics as more of a supplement to your main studies.

Editorial Review:

Features include:

*TheĀ first guide to provide updated information for June 2007 test change

*Full-length practice test with detailed answer explanations

*Diagnostic test

*Complete content review

*Effective strategies for the PCAT
