Editorial Review:

Dr. Dean Ornish is the first clinician to offer documented proof that heart disease can be halted, or even reversed, simply by changing your lifestyle. Based on his internationally acclaimed scientific study, which has now been ongoing for years, Dr. Ornish's program has yielded amazing results. Participants reduced or discontinued medications; their chest pain diminished or disappeared; they felt more energetic, happy, and calm; they lost weight while eating more; and blockages in coronary arteries were actually reduced.

In his breakthrough book, Dr. Ornish presents this and other dramatic evidence and guides you, step-by-step, through the extraordinary Opening Your Heart program, which is winning landmark approval from America's health insurers. The program takes you beyond the purely physical side of health care to include the psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects so vital to healing. This book represents the best modern medicine has to offer. It can inspire you to open your heart to a longer, better, happier life.

The Power of Evolution 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The only complaint I have about this book is that the cover refers to Dr. Moalem as a "medical maverick." I don't see the assertions Dr. Moalem makes here as being particularly controversial (at least, for anyone who accepts the basics of the theory of evolution). The fact that diseases are evolutionary pressures on the development of the human species seems very straightforward. Granted, how Dr. Moalem interprets some of these pressures may be subject to debate; however, the basic premise is sound.

In fact, for anyone interested in the contemplation of the development of humans, this is a wonderful book. It's the kind of book that reads so well that, afterwards, you feel like you should have realized what she's been telling you all along. For example, the idea that our bodies have adapted to various diseases seems obvious. What should be obvious but isn't necessarily is the idea that some of these adaptations which served us well for millennia have become liabilities in the twenty-first century.

Take hemochromatosis. It is a surprisingly common genetic disease among people of Western European decent--one in three carry at least one copy of the gene--that causes an abnormally high level of iron in the body. Unchecked, it can lead to severe illness and death. But we also know that hemochromatic macrophages have an advantage in the fight against bacterial invasion. Is it possible that people with hemochromatosis had an advantage in surviving the plague in the 13th century, which is why this gene is common now? Dr. Moalem makes a good case.

And what about diabetes? Most common in cultures that descend from regions of cold climate. Why? Because driving up sugar levels is a natural response to cold. It forces dehydration, and digesting sugar generates heat, both advantages in the cold. It may be a leftover from our ancestors who survived the last ice age, when bodies were forced to use the limited food supplies to best advantage. Now that we live longer and eat more, high sugar levels have become dangerous.

And consider diseases like malaria and the common cold. Why does malaria make us so sick we end up in bed whereas most of us can stay ambulatory with a cold? How about because it gives a transmission advantage to each disease. Malaria wants us still so more mosquitos can get at us. A cold wants us out and about to pass the germs on to others ourselves. Evolution is an amazing thing.

But I think my favorite example Dr. Moalem gives is her speculation against the "savanna hypothesis." This hypothesis says that our ape ancestors moved from all fours to walking on two legs as a response to the new struggles to get food as they moved from the forests to the savannas. The weakness in this theory, however, is that it is very male oriented as males were the primary hunters. Evolution has to impact across gender. Moalem is a supporter of the "aquatic ape" hypothesis, which says that our distant ancestors spent much of their time in and around water. It explains much: why we became bipedal, why we lost fur, why our nostrils face down, why fat is attached to our skin and why babies are born the way they are (leading to much more difficult childbirth for we earth-bound humans).

All in all, I find this to be a very compelling book. Certainly there is room for debate with Dr. Moalem's conclusions but her ideas are interesting and her arguments are strong. It forces one to consider seriously the power of evolution to impact our lives. I, for one, think this is a great book.

Editorial Review:

Joining the ranks of modern myth busters, Dr. Sharon Moalem turns our current understanding of illness on its head and challenges us to fundamentally change the way we think about our bodies, our health, and our relationship to just about every other living thing on earth. Through a fresh and engaging examination of our evolutionary history, Dr. Moalem reveals how many of the conditions that are diseases today actually gave our ancestors a leg up in the survival sweepstakes. But Survival of the Sickest doesn't stop there. It goes on to demonstrate just how little modern medicine really understands about human health, and offers a new way of thinking that can help all of us live longer, healthier lives.

A comprehensive list of all alternative and orthodox treatments for cancer 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Having been recently diagnosed with colon cancer (removed by operation) and liver cancer (secondary) I needed to know some answers regarding future treatments. Having heard and seen the results of the 'orthodox' route I wanted none of that! This book informed me of all of the alternatives on offer and covered each protocol very thoroughly. I highly recommend this book to every cancer sufferer. You will not be disappointed. Incidentally I chose the Budwig route.

The Truth Is Out There... I Hope 5 out of 5 stars.

I recently reviewed Prof. Randy Pausch's book, The Last Lecture. While I read the whole book, so far I've only watched the first three minutes of his YouTube lecture. He was an engaging and entertaining speaker for those three minutes, and I plan to watch the film in its entirety soon. I was somewhat saddened when he advised the audience not to foist herbs and other "quack" remedies upon him. By then he had already undergone surgery and chemotherapy and his prognosis was dire. This particular book and any other "alternative" remedy applied after that lecture would have more than likely been futile. Prof. Pausch was arguably a far more intelligent man than myself; but let me ask you a question. If orthodox medical science offered you no more than a 4% chance to survive the particular cancer that claimed the good Professor, would you still swing for the bleachers with all that orthodox medicine has to offer? When a person who eschews traditional medicine passes away from cancer after their alternative medicine failed, they are referred to as victims of quacks. When people who pass away from cancer underwent traditional medicine, they have simply lost their brave battle. When Michael Landon passed away from pancreatic cancer in 1991; I thought, "what chance do the rest of us have?"
I am sure that there are many cancer dialog sites out there with many recommendations. Perhaps some of them suggest that: 1) piercing (biopsy) a tumor might help to spread it, 2) squeezing (mammogram) a tumor might help to spread it, 3) by accident or by no way to avoid it cutting into a tumor (surgery) might help to spread it, 4) chemotherapy is toxic enough to compromise your immune system. So the question then becomes, can alternative remedies be of service to someone who undergoes a treatment that degrades their immune system or has allowed an encapsulated tumor to escape through the lymph system? If this topic is of the utmost importance to you and you are exploring your options, I honestly wish you nothing but the best. If you haven't read How to Fight Cancer & Win, this book is a good start. Consider reading The Jason Winters Story. Research ultraviolet light therapy and hydrogen peroxide therapy. I won't and can't say how any alternative therapy will work compared to traditional medicine, but do consider what active role you can play in your own health structure. I guess what bothers me is that books and other information such as that contained in Fight Cancer are regarded as dangerous quackery while big pharmacy and medicine quash both legitimate exploration/discussion and quite possibly cheap therapies while maintaining a batting average no better than (and maybe much worse than) those very alternatives.

8/28/08 update: Although the following alternative therapy was not mentioned in the Fight Cancer book, I just came across it, and it is worth mentioning here. See what you can find out about Aglycon Sapogenin (AGS) and Dammarane Sapogenin. The word is that these components starve out some types of cancer tumors including pancreatic cancer. Since its' discovery is relatively new, I haven't heard much about it myself.

Essentials of Musculoskeletal Care 5 out of 5 stars.

If you're going to be in practice, you had better own this book. Every general practice physician I know owns this book, and every mid-level provider ought to have one, as well. Concise, easy to read/understand, discusses complaints by body region, includes IDC-9 codes.

A ER intern's review 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As a 1st year ER resident, I picked this book up to supplement my knowledge on basic musculoskeletal and orthopedic injuries. The text does a wonderful job of illustrating proper physical exam skills, as well as covering a broad range of injuries commonly found in the ED. The specific topics are concise and in depth in terms of diagnosing musculoskeletal conditions. However, I felt the general orthopedics section didn't contain any new information that a fourth year medical student hasn't already covered at some point. And I was somewhat disappointed in the treatment and red flag sections on each condition, as I felt they were much too brief. That being said, I was happy with my purchase and have learned a great deal in diagnosing the various MSK conditions found in the ED, while supplementing treatment options with other texts.

Editorial Review:

Clinical guide to caring for approximately 300 common musculoskeletal conditions. Covers general and pediatric orthopedics, and seven anatomic sections. For orthopedic surgeons. Halftone illustrations. 28 U.S. contributors.

Editorial Review:

“The bard of biological weapons captures
the drama of the front lines.”

-Richard Danzig, former secretary of the navy

The first major bioterror event in the United States-the anthrax attacks in October 2001-was a clarion call for scientists who work with “hot” agents to find ways of protecting civilian populations against biological weapons. In The Demon in the Freezer, his first nonfiction book since The Hot Zone, a #1 New York Times bestseller, Richard Preston takes us into the heart of Usamriid, the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, Maryland, once the headquarters of the U.S. biological weapons program and now the epicenter of national biodefense.

Peter Jahrling, the top scientist at Usamriid, a wry virologist who cut his teeth on Ebola, one of the world’s most lethal emerging viruses, has ORCON security clearance that gives him access to top secret information on bioweapons. His most urgent priority is to develop a drug that will take on smallpox-and win. Eradicated from the planet in 1979 in one of the great triumphs of modern science, the smallpox virus now resides, officially, in only two high-security freezers-at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta and in Siberia, at a Russian virology institute called Vector. But the demon in the freezer has been set loose. It is almost certain that illegal stocks are in the possession of hostile states, including Iraq and North Korea. Jahrling is haunted by the thought that biologists in secret labs are using genetic engineering to create a new superpox virus, a smallpox resistant to all vaccines.

Usamriid went into a state of Delta Alert on September 11 and activated its emergency response teams when the first anthrax letters were opened in New York and Washington, D.C. Preston reports, in unprecedented detail, on the government’s response to the attacks and takes us into the ongoing FBI investigation. His story is based on interviews with top-level FBI agents and with Dr. Steven Hatfill.

Jahrling is leading a team of scientists doing controversial experiments with live smallpox virus at CDC. Preston takes us into the lab where Jahrling is reawakening smallpox and explains, with cool and devastating precision, what may be at stake if his last bold experiment fails.

Terrific 5 out of 5 stars.

I've tried Dale Dubin on three different occasions and always gave up midway. This book is easy to read, keeps up your interest, doesn't clog you with unnecessary information, has a good summary at the end of every chapter, good clinical examples are provided and the best part is that it is quite funny. I actually laughed out aloud where he says wolff-parkinson-white and lown-ganong-levine aren't the names of lawfirms!
I managed to finish it in two weeks and it is refreshing to come across an ekg book that doesn't make you want to take extended break times!
Only thing is I wish the author had used more arrows to point out the specific abnormalities and that the last section of practice EKGS was a little more comprehensive.
But I think it is a good resource for residents and students. And I would pick it over Dale Dubin anyday.

Editorial Review:

Now in its updated Fifth Edition, this popular and practical text presents all the information clinicians need to use the EKG in everyday practice and interpret hypertrophy and enlargement, arrhythmias, conduction blocks, pre-excitation syndromes, and myocardial infarction. It is an ideal reference for medical students in ICM courses, house officers, or anyone directly involved in patient care, whether student, teacher, or practitioner. The book features more than 200 facsimiles of EKG strips and numerous case studies and clinical examples. This Fifth Edition includes updated information on pacemakers and myocardial infarction treatment and more practice EKGs.

Editorial Review:

“Women today not only deserve but should expect a pain-free, active lifestyle, no matter their age, no matter their previous experience.”

Pain Free for Women

In his famed San Diego clinic, Pete Egoscue has taught women of all ages and from all walks of life how to use the Egoscue Method for safe, effective, and permanent relief from chronic pain without prescription painkillers, physical therapy, or invasive surgery. Now he shares his specially adapted “Pain Free” program for women to use at home.

Whether you suffer from back or neck pain, joint discomfort or sore knees, or need more stamina, improved balance, and extra strength, here is a revolutionary and proven approach to self-care that promises optimal health through a simple set of exercises that will transform the way you move and feel — forever!

Egoscue shows women how to take back their bodies by recovering and restoring a precious health asset — full, free, flexible motion — that he believes has been drastically reduced by our modern lifestyle.

As Egoscue explains, motion not only develops a woman’s body but also maintains and rejuvenates it. Yet as her motion-deprived muscles disengage and weaken, it is common for a woman’s body to lose alignment, leading to repetitive stress injuries, persistent pain, and general bad health. Even the simplest activities — how she sits, stands, walks, works, lifts, and sleeps — can trigger problems.

Focusing on proper alignment, posture, and muscle engagement, Egoscue provides simple but powerful techniques to restore flexibility and function while at the same time boosting energy, revving up the immune system, even raising the body’s metabolic rate.

The remarkable “E-cises” included within have also been linked to improved ability to fight disease, cope with aging, and recover from accidents and injuries. The “miracle” cure Egoscue offers is, simply, correct motion.

Organized by the seasons of a woman’s life, Pain Free for Women pays particular attention to age-specific concerns such as puberty, childbirth, and menopause, as well as special issues such as arthritis, PMS, and depression.

At the same time, Egoscue shows how women can build a framework of healthy movement that will prevent illness and maintain pain-free good health throughout the journey of life.

According to Egoscue, reversing the effects of poor musculoskeletal fitness provides astonishing benefits, including:

•Better balance, posture, and breathing, as well as increased resiliency
•Effective and safe weight management
•Healthy bone density and visual acuity
•Heightened sex drive
•Delayed symptoms of aging
•Peace of mind and general tranquility

Extensively illustrated to demonstrate proper placement, posture, and movement, Pain Free for Women offers women of every age the possibility of feeling better than ever before.

I am very satisfied with the book. I have lowered my blood sugar by more than 100 points with the information provided in the book.(watching what I eat as well as a regular exercise program) Thank You

Helped me to understand diabetes better. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I was diagnosed a month ago with type 2 diabetes. Although I have a very mild form of it and my doctor is hopeful that it can be reversed I was terrified. I didn't want to go down the road of amputations, blindness, and kidney disease. That's when I found this book. I have a better understanding of diabetes now and a low glycemic diet makes perfectly good sense to me. I've been eating a plant based diet for a month and have lost 21 pounds and my blood sugars are normal.

There are quite a few reviews that say diabetics need to avoid carbohydrates-that's horse and buggy thinking. It is now known that diabetics need carbohydrates-it is the fuel that our bodies use. What diabetics need to change is the source of those carbohydrates. The less refined food we eat the better blood sugar control we have. As Dr. Whitaker says it's not the quantity of carbohydrates it's the quality. So those people with negative reviews either haven't kept up to date with the latest diabetes information or they didn't read the book. I'm even going to send this to my sister whose diabetes is out of control. Maybe it will help her as it's done for others.

Editorial Review:

The author of the bestselling Reversing Heart Disease returns with a proven program that allows diabetes to reduce or eliminate dependency on insulin or drugs and control their condition--naturally and effectively--with diet and exercise.
