I have now had this book for about a month, and I have found that the tables and text are first rate. The images are good to good enough. I would say that this is going to continue to be a heavily used tome on my shelf!!! Well worth the price.

Editorial Review:

Now completely updated and expanded, this important text delineates the spectrum of changes possible throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Coverage includes anatomy, infectious diseases, clinical manifestations, radiology, and pathologic analysis with numerous gross and microscopic photographs, line drawings, radiographs, and electron micrographs. Also covered: Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Polyposis Syndromes, Malignant Lymphomas and Hematologic Malignancies, Mesenchymal Neoplasms, and Cytology of the Gastrointestinal Tract. New in this edition: 30% expanded coverage, with many new illustrations; pathophysiologic concepts; more pediatric pathology; more mucosal biopsy interpretation; molecular biologic information; new chapter on AIDS-related diseases and motility disorders.

I can't tell you how valuable this single resource is. The text is imminently readable and the info is right on the money. I felt like I was drowning in a sea of confusing resources until I locked on to this book. Using it alone, with no other study aid, I passed the boards. I strongly recommend this book to anyone taking the GI boards or the recert exam. Tremendously helpful.

Editorial Review:

It has become acceptable to talk about heart disease, ulcers and even cancer, but inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) -- which includes two chronic conditions known as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis -- has remained for too long the secret illness that no one wants to discuss.

Now Dr. Fred Saibil, a renowned expert on IBD, provides concise, up-to-date information on these common conditions.

Dr. Saibil begins by describing the normal gastrointestinal system, and then explains what goes wrong in someone with IBD. He also discusses:

  • Signs and symptoms
  • Procedures and instruments used to diagnose IBD
  • Affects of diet
  • Drugs available and how they work
  • Pros and cons of various surgical options
  • Effects on sexual activity and child-bearing

Dr. Saibil even provides travel tips and other useful self-help strategies for living with IBD, and explains possible complications of the disease, and the special problems of children with IBD.

With its detailed tables, sidebars and diagrams, Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitis gives you the straight facts about a disease that effects many thousands of North Americans.

Editorial Review:

Endoscopy has revolutionised the practice of medical and surgical gastroenterology. The authors of this new text are the leading endoscopists in the UK, and have set out to provide the newcomer to the field or the practitioner requiring an update, with all the practical advice they need. In discussing the procedures themselves, the authors begin at the top of the gut and end at the bottom, digressing into the bile and pancreatic ducts along the way. As one reviewer has commented, the discussions throughout the text are characterized by the same 'clarity of expression, perception of other endoscopists' difficulties and depth of their vast experience

Well worth the price!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book for my Advanced Hepatology Fellowship almost 6 months ago. Since then, I have had a chance to go through 4-5 chapters in this book and I have to say that I am amazed at the clarity and flow of information in this book. The authors have done a commendable job. This is probably the only detailed book on the market that specifically addresses the medical management of a liver transplant patient and does so beautifully. I highly recommend this book for anyone active in taking care of patients pre- or post- liver transplant.

Editorial Review:

Medical Care of the Liver Transplant Patient offers a concise, readable guide to treating liver transplant patients. It answers practical questions about drugs and drug interactions, complications and special medical concerns as well as addressing the primary care needs of the liver transplant patient. Dr

Board Study 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book to help prepare for the Pedi GI Boards. It served as an excellent secondary resource for reviewing details of pediatric liver diseases. The color plates were particularly useful to review pathology.

The book was listed as "new" but arrived from Amazon.com with a dent in the side of the book which damaged many of the pages. I did not have time to return, so used as is. I would have given it 5 stars had it not been for the damage.

Editorial Review:

Completely revised new edition of the premier reference on pediatric liver disease. Liver Disease in Children, 3rd Edition provides authoritative coverage of every aspect of liver disease affecting infants, children, and adolescents. Chapters are written by international experts and address the unique pathophysiology, manifestations, and management of these disorders in the pediatric population. The third edition has been thoroughly updated and features new contributions on liver development, cholestatic and autoimmune disorders, fatty liver disease, and inborn errors of metabolism. An essential resource for all physicians involved in the care of children with liver disease.

This text provides a quick, concise review of the pimary topics covered on emergency medicine exams. I found it to be a good way to prepare for inservice exams and the written boards.

Editorial Review:

A review of medical and surgical problems affecting the liver, pancreas and biliary system. This book provides the essential information for medical and nursing students, GPs and junior hospital doctors in general medical and surgical training. It provides algorhithms for diagnosing and treating common diseases (e.g. gallstones, hepatitis) as well as information for referring, and allowing informed discussion with patients regarding treatment and prognosis of rarer conditions such as malignancies and transplantation.

Good coverage of the essentials 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Good comprehensive coverage of the topic although not in-depth. Fluid reading. Questions with explanations at the end of each chapter.

Difficult to read, lacking in physiology 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my 2nd year GI module and was quickly disappointed. I like my course books to give in depth physiology and pathology sections that are easier and quicker to read than robbins. This book did neither. All black and white, very difficult to read and does not keep interest up (not that any GI book can, but this one was especially dull). Physiology chapters went into great detail in basic subjects such as enteric nerve function and intracellular signaling pathways, but was severely lacking in the more broad and important GI physiology concepts. As far as the pathology sections, I actually prefer reading robbins which says a lot as to how dull this book is. I suggest Lange GI Physiology for the physiology and just using robbins for the pathology. Do not purchase this book for the purpose of first or second year medical study.

Editorial Review:

Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Pathophysiology conforms to the movement in medical education toward embracing the integration of information and incorporating the skills of knowledge acquisition and problem-solving into the learning process.

Along with providing a brief review of the normal structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract, this text offers state-of-the-art information about the pathophysiologic basis of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary diseases.

Although designed as a preclinical text, all medical students will find it a useful guide as they move from the study of the basic sciences and begin to address clinical situations. The book will also be useful for house officers, fellows, and practitioners of internal medicine and family medicine, as well as for gastroenterologists and hepatologists.
