Detailed, clinical information in a readable form 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This is a nursing textbook, with detailed, clinical information; however, it is very readable and has many helpful charts and definitions. It covers basic nutrition, nutrition through the life cycle, and community nutrition & health. A long section on clinical nutrition covers diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, renal disease, and surgery. I have used it for personal health and nutrition questions and problems and found it very helpful, e.g., the function of potassium in the body. I found the textbook format helpful rather than bothersome.

Too many glitches 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

While I do not object to the descriptions of other reviewers, I have to disagree about the overall evaluation. There are too many oddities and unclear descriptions and graphs. For example: in the classification of carbohydrates in chapter 2, the table (2-1) does not line up with the text in terms of the treatment of fiber. Many will be surprised to learn that athletes do not really need any extra protein (chapter 16). The energy pathway graphics for diabetes in chapter 20 has arrows that point off to nothing and is very confused (using the same type of icon to represent processes and effects, for example). For that matter, the entire discussion of management of diabetes would be near useless for anyone actually trying to understand how to help a patient. It has too many platitudes about various good things that should be done, without any explanation of why those things are hard to do.

More fundamentally, the book often presents conclusions without explaining (to some degree) the underlying mechanisms. It also (as in the protein discussion regarding calcium loss with excessive protein intake) indicates that some effect can occur, without indicating the any quantitative information about when it will start to occur and how much of the effect occurs.

Editorial Review:

Textbook examines the basic principles of scientific nutrition and their applications to health and disease. Includes new case studies, clinical applications, appendix, and a CD-ROM containing a database of more than 2,200 foods. Previous edition: c1994. Four-color format. Softcover.

Excellent 12 Step Companion Book 5 out of 5 stars.
54 of 55 people found this review helpful.

Being in recovery in OA for 6 years and reading the OA and AA 12 & 12's NUMEROUS times, I was looing for something new and fresh to read. This book truly fit the bill. The author really breaks the steps down into many subcategories and delves into issues deeply. Not a substituute for the AA or OA 12 & 12 by any means, but a great "study aid" to the 12 steps.

This book is life altering if you are ready to recover 5 out of 5 stars.
41 of 41 people found this review helpful.

I was shocked to see that there were actually negative reviews on this book.
One of the reviews I read sounds like it was written for another book as the content in the review was not related to any of the people or subjects contained in this book.
... On to what I have to say about this book. This is positively one of the greatest books I have read for overeaters. This is not a diet book, but a healing tool, and a spiritual tool using the twelve steps.
In many ways compulsive overeaters or binge eaters are like alcoholics. It is a compulsive disorder that has so little to do with food. We eat to "stuff" our pain, hurt, anger, fears, regrets, sorrows and disappointments.
Using the tools in this book and going to Overeaters Anonymous I have been binge free for two months. I haven't had any sugar during that time. At one time these both really did seem impossible. But thanks to this wonderful book and the help of OA I am healing. If you have problems with binge eating or compulsive overeating I think this book is well worth the money and more.

Editorial Review:

The author of the popular Food for Thought takes a fresh, in-depth look at the Twelve Steps of Overeaters Anonymous. Each chapter carefully examines and interprets each of the individual Steps.

Questionable advice. 2 out of 5 stars.
15 of 18 people found this review helpful.

First, I should say that I believe that his diet is vastly superior to the standard american diet. However I think that both "The Mcdougall Program for a Healthy Heart" by John Mcdougall,MD and "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" by Caldwell Esselstyn are both much better books for a number of reasons.

Fuhrman uses the native population of rural China where heart disease is rare to justify his program. However, he then recommends that you limit consumption of starches such as rice even though rice is the primary component in rural chinese diet. While Dr Mcdougal's program uses the same justification citing not only rural china(rice),but parts of mexico(corn), eastern Europe(potatoes), New Guinea(yams),etc, he recommends that you base your diet on these foods. Following Mcdougalls plan, my weight dropped to 155lbs and on my 1st blood test since starting this plan my cholesterol dropped to 167 from its typical 220-250 range after only a few weeks. A Whole grain based diet is both more satisfying and a lot less expensive than a vegetable based diet unless you are growing it yourself.

Dr. Fuhrman also recommends and sells policosanol. When I first found out that I had high cholesterol, I tried policosanol. After 6 months, my cholesterol went up 20 points. To the best of my knowledge, no studies outside of the cuban studies (funded by a company with a financial stake) have replicated the Cuban findings. If you cannot get your cholesterol low enough with diet and exercise and you do not want to take statins, then you should read "Reverse Heart Disease Now" by Stephen Sinatra,md. for advice on supplements.

I think that any low fat vegan diet (including Dr. Furhmans) will result in weight loss, low cholesterol and protection from heart disease. This book conveys that message far less convincingly than the books I cited above.

Editorial Review:

There is irrefutable evidence that high cholesterol levels are associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease and a resultant heart attack. Cholesterol Protection For Life explains my nutritional approach to heart disease and cholesterol lowering. It describes the safest and most potent natural cholesterol-lowering agents that can be used in conjunction with my dietary approach to assure that dramatic cholesterol lowering can occur without the risks of taking drugs. Also try some of the new menu plans recipes.

Not very scientific 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be somewhat vague and non-scientific. It's all stuff I've read before. The 'quizzes' to determine how sensitive you are to wheat or grains are too broad. There is some good info on tests and glutens, but the part about 'exorphins' is just plain silliness. Save your time and money, here's a summary: (i) avoid grains, esp wheat (ii) go organic where possible (iii) it's hard and people might think you're weird but go for it.

Thought Provoking 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I came to this book as someone on a low starch diet to combat ankylosing spondylitis. I found the book concise and well argued and am now convinced that avoiding or at least reducing the intake of grain products is essential for those with grain sensitivities but also important for those otherwise well people seeking to avoid the modern maladies of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer etc. I highly recommend the book.

Editorial Review:

Diets high in grains can lead to a host of health problems such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, fatigue, and more. Going Against the Grain outlines the disadvantages and potential dangers of eating various types of grains and provides practical, realistic advice on implementing a plan to cut back or eliminate grains on a daily basis. This book also includes easy-to-follow grain-free recipes and helpful suggestions for dining out.

The Only Way I've Ever Been Able to Lose Weight! 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I have tried literally every diet book out there - Fat Flush, South Beach, Zone, Body For Life - and Weight Watchers numerous times. The only diet that has ever worked for me is SMD. I went on it in desperation 3 years ago and lost 25 lbs in about 6 weeks. I kept all the weight off until I got pregnant two years ago. With 15 baby pounds left to lose, I'm going back on next week!

Tips:
- You WILL be Desperately Hungry, despite what the good doctor says, especially for the first 3 days or so until you adjust. Try diet sodas to help assuage this.
- You must exercise. I found that I did not lose weight on the days that I didn't run a couple of miles. The diet is very low calorie and your metabolism will adjust accordingly if you don't kick it into gear.
- The "Fruit salad every day" may hinder your weight loss. If you're using the alternative lunch with no problem, ignore this one. But I found I often didn't lose weight on the days I used the fruit salad alternative.

Best of luck!
