Editorial Review:

Proper formulation of diets for horses depends on adequate knowledge of their nutrient requirements. These requirements depend on the breed and age of the horse and whether it is exercising, pregnant, or lactating. A great deal of new information has been accumulated since the publication 17 years ago of the last edition of Nutrient Requirements of Horses. This new edition features a detailed review of scientific literature, summarizing all the latest information, and provides a new set of requirements based on revised data. Also included is updated information on the composition of feeds, feed additives, and other compounds routinely fed to horses. The effects of physiological factors, such as exercise, and environmental factors, such as temperature and humidity, are covered, as well. "Nutrient Requirements of Horses" also contains information on several nutritional and metabolic diseases that horses often have. Designed primarily as a reference, both practical and technical, "Nutrient Requirements of Horses" is intended to ensure that the diets of horses and other equids contain adequate amounts of nutrients and that the intakes of certain nutrients are not so excessive that they inhibit performance or impair health. This book is primarily intended for animal nutritionists, veterinarians, and other scientists; however, individual horse owners and managers will also find some of this material useful. Professors who teach graduate courses in animal nutrition will find "Nutrient Requirements of Horses" beneficial as a textbook.

Excellent, Concise, and Thorough! 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

This large format book reveiws basic metabolism in an easy to understand manner. Specific segments of the metabolic pathway are summarized within two pages. Each face-page gives an overview of the entire metabolic pathway, with an outline of the specific topic discussed within that section. Far easier to comprehend than the metabolic pathways as described in those well known Biochemistry tomes, where the entire metabolic pathway is spread over 100 or so pages!

Metabolic pathways??? - Brilliant! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

As a biochemistry student I found this book to be the perfect partner to Albert Lehninger's "Principles of Biochemistry". An excellent overall picture of how each pathway interacts with other metabolic components.

Editorial Review:

This hugely popular reference provides a quick and complete overview of the complicated subject of metabolism. Color diagrams clearly illustrate the interrelated pathways and complex molecules involved in the metabolic process, making this handy guide an invaluable reference for researchers, scientists, clinicians, and students.

Dialysis patient finds this book very useful 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I'm a kidney dialysis patient and have found this book very useful. It lists key components of foods in the portion sizes that are likely to be used, rather than by the ounce or gram if those aren't the normal portion sizes. The foods are alphabetized by type, including such things as drinks, candy and fast foods by restaurant chain, as well as the staples of everyday existence.

I can keep track of the amount of Phosphorus and Potassium, which are crucial for hemodialysis patients to monitor. Also, it lists many other minerals and vitamins, protein, a breakdown of fats, sugars, total carbs and HDL and LDL as well as total cholesterol, triglycerides, water content and other things that may factor into restricted diets for almost anyone watching almost any food components.
My only reservation is that many of the foods listed do not list the key components for me (Phosphorus and Potassium).

Editorial Review:

This reference text, an enduring standard in nutritional science, has been exhaustively revised to ensure relevance to today's eating habits--85% of the text is new or updated. Provides complete nutritional information on 8,500 foods in an easy-access tabular format. Far more comprehensive than any other book on the subject, Bowes and Church's discusses not only general foods but common brand name products, for extra utility in real-life nutritional analysis. Exceptional appendices list all foods containing a particular substance, such as caffeine or iron. This edition contains food tables that include monounsaturated fat content, 3,000 more foods, and listings of the sources for each food entry.

Booooring 2 out of 5 stars.

I was required to buy this book for my class. It is utterly boring. If I had trouble going to sleep, I just read this book. Some of the information is outdated (e.g. how the chicken pox vaccine should be given), as it's copyright is 2005, and the subject matter it contains on the health, safety and nutrition of the young child is constantly changing. The publisher needs to create a 7th edition and use different authors.

Editorial Review:

Health, Safety and Nutrition for the Young Child, 7th edition covers the contemporary health, safety and nutrition needs of infant through school-age children in one comprehensive volume, with extensive coverage of topics critical to the early identification of children’s health conditions and the promotion of children’s well-being. Concepts are backed by the latest research findings. Collaboration with families, sensitivity to individual differences and the critical importance of health, safety and nutrition education continue to be stressed. This time-proven book is written in a clear, concise and thought-provoking manner and is loaded with easy-to-access checklists, guidelines and lesson plans that no early childhood student or professional should be without!
