Great help! This book helped me fingure out what exactly I needed to put in my own concept maps. It also has some great sections that you can photocopy and take to clinicals, so that you don't miss a single thing while gathering assessment data.

I bought $250 worth of books for school at Amazon, at the college book store, it would have been $380. Great books at a great price!

Editorial Review:

Aids the student in synthesizing pertinent assessment data into comprehensive concept maps, developing holistic and comprehensive care plans with nursing interventions corresponding to primary health problems and nursing diagnoses, and implementing nursing care using these care plans. life changing 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is wonderful. It was assigned reading for a course I voluntarily took to improve my professional consulting skills. The book is full of valuable information that is easy to read yet full of depth. With some practice I have made this a regular part of my life, and my relationships both personally and professionaly have improved for it. I think everyone should read this book!

Editorial Review:

Internationally recognized for its successful problem-management and opportunity development approach to effective helping, Egan's text emphasizes the collaborative nature of the therapist-client relationship and uses a practical, three-stage model that drives client problem-managing and opportunity-developing action. Egan masterfully leads readers step-by-step through the counseling process, while giving them a feeling for the complexity inherent in any helping relationship. As readers begin to understand the various steps of the helping model, they are able to improve their competence and confidence measurably. In this new eighth edition, Egan has built upon the strengths of the last edition in which he presented a "positive psychology", solution-focused theme by adding new discussions on evidence-based practice, research, and philosophical perspectives around how helpers know what they know.

Editorial Review:

At some time, most families will need to provide home care for an aging family member who is ill or disabled. While home caregiving provides many benefits, it takes careful planning, support, and patience.

The American Medical Association Guide to Home Caregiving provides the information you need to take the best possible care of an elderly, ill, or disabled person in a home setting. Written by experts from the American Medical Association, the book explains such essentials as how to:
* Plan and arrange a room to adapt to a loved one's needs
* Give medications, maintain hygiene, monitor symptoms, deal with incontinence, provide emotional support, and relieve boredom
* Choose a home healthcare provider
* Pay for home healthcare, including Medicare and Medicaid, and long-term care insurance
* Care for a person with Alzheimer's disease or a terminal illness
* Choose between alternative living arrangements such as assisted living facilities or nursing homes
* Take care of yourself, the caregiver

With advice that touches both the physical and the emotional aspects of caregiving, this supportive, practical handbook will help make the experience as successful and rewarding as possible for you and your loved one.

For more than 150 years, the American Medical Association has been the leading group of medical experts in the nation and one of the most respected health-related organizations in the world. The "after" of life-threatening illness 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

"In noisy wards crowded waiting rooms of country hospitals and clinics, in quiet private rooms in medical center pavilions or in well-appointed waiting rooms, examining rooms, or offices, wherever there are patients, there are long moments of silence, pauses, sometimes preceded by a sigh, a transient stillness when the air feels heavier."

So starts this book--and if you have "been there" for yourself or with a loved one, you know about the silence pauses, the sighs, the anticipation.

Written 10 years ago, and just updated, most of the information will never go out of date because of the perspective we all have: the reality of hearing you have a major illness.

Most people don't give much thought to the meaning of life--how long will they live? This big question brings up the connection between what ails the body, and their soul's need for authenticity, love and purpose.

Most medical doctors work with statistics, based on what you have: "You have about X years/months to live," and usually are not interested in stories about recovery. At those times, WE must take charge of our life and our attitude.

The author says: Once we take the soul seriously--and this is one of the innate beliefs that human beings do have--then we are spiritual beings on a human path rather than human beings who may well be on a spiritual path.

The author is a psychiatrist who understands how one person's diagnosis affects many around them--a decent into another world. Here is where that line between health and wellness is crossed and we enter the realm of the soul.

Before "the discovery" that something is wrong, we live in innocence or denial--and then comes the change--the "after."

The author made so many thought-provoking points about being sick, being hospitalized. How we are supposed to act--for the medical professionals, for our family, for ourself.

She discusses the importance of keeping a journal if we have a life-threatening disease, noting both the small and big things of every-day life.

I had a friend who after a long and valiant struggle died of cancer. She called the cancer "a gift" because of an outpouring of love from her friends, family and supportive community that she had never felt before. Today I still think of her life/her attitude as a "gift" to me.

No one gets of life alive--we are all mortal. The author reminds us that the Chinese pictograph for "crisis" contains the ideograms for both "danger" and "opportunity."

Armchair Interviews says: If illness is threatening how you live, this book will give you strength.

Editorial Review:

The bestselling author of Goddesses in Every Woman sheds light on the experiences of the seriously ill, and shows how facing mortality can be a life-transforming process. Patients, their caretakers, and their loved ones will all reap tremendous benefits from this spiritual but pragmatic book.

Pros and Cons... 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I used this book for medical school histology in combination with the Junqueira textbook. I liked this atlas because it is predominantly drawings and so you get to see the "ideal" appearance of things. There are lots of labels on the drawings pointing out the different features of what is being illustrated...this is very helpful and other atlases and textbooks I saw did not do as good a job with this. There is some text as well which is mildly helpful.

Other people in my medical school class used the wheater book, gartner, or strete and seemed happy. There were a few instances where I would have preferred to see a photograph instead of a drawing, but overall I was very happy with this book and would use it again. This book was particularly helpful in the "lab" portion of histology when identifying cells and tissue structures on slides.

Editorial Review:

This atlas's distinctive, full-color, schematic illustrations have earned lasting renown for superb explanation of basic histology concepts. This edition includes 120 newly improved illustrations; an additional nine micrographs; and a new chapter on cell biology. The atlas presents its hallmark magnification of the minutia of organ and tissue structures to show the functions of microscopic structures and how functions work. Part One explains tissues and their relationship to their systems; Part Two addresses organs in a similar way. A brand-new electronic supplement now allows students to practice identifying structures in micrographs using a "labels on/labels off" toggle, "hotspots" (a mark on an image indicating the presence of a hidden label, ideal for self testing), and a self-test for productive learning. An instructor's version of the image bank is also available, which includes an additional 600 images not found in the book.

Editorial Review:

The intricacies of elder caregiving duties and responsibilities can be overwhelming, especially because adult children of ageing parents do not know the ins and outs of the medical and social service systems, let alone how to cope with the emotional burdens of providing care for their ailing parents. They desperately wish for a single resource that answers their questions with 'how to' information that restores their feelings of competence and control. "Eldercare 911" is that resource. With the steady growth of the elderly population, it is estimated that approximately one-third of Americans will be providing care for an elderly person in the near future. This well-researched, compassionate, and comprehensive handbook will empower caregivers to be the best they can be without neglecting their own very legitimate needs. The authors use excerpts from a compilation of caregiver interviews to demonstrate the most common problems in eldercare."Eldercare 911" is organised into easily accessible sections and subsections: 20 chapters divided into 131 topics and then into another 77 subtopics, making it simple for readers to find exactly what they are looking for. The authors give full consideration to the time limitations and career needs of working caregivers, and the special challenges faced by women with teenage children, spouses, or significant others who may not always be sensitive to the caregiver's balancing act.Among the topics discussed are knowing when elderly people need help; how to intervene; finding and using support systems; handling burnout; managing medical, insurance, and benefits issues; overseeing medications; coping with Alzheimer's Disease and other serious illnesses; how to decide when hospitalisation is necessary; detecting and dealing with abuse; working with eldercare professionals; setting up home care; making decisions and arrangements for alternate housing. The authors also examine rarely discussed, sensitive issues that affect family communication and relationships like parents, sexual behaviour, dating and remarriage, and death and dying.

This is the one to buy 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I bought several books of this type and this one is by far the most helpful and informative. It was invaluable in my visits to assisted living and nursing home facilities - letting me know what to look for and what questions to ask. But there is so much more to this book than just that. If I could only buy one book to help me understand how I can help my parents this would definitely be it.

Editorial Review:

In this comprehensive and accessible guide, long-term care expert Stella Henry helps readers navigate the daunting logistics and powerful emotions of making care decisions for an elderly parent or loved one. Drawing from her 36 years as a registered nurse and a nursing home administrator, as well as her experience caring for both her parents (both of whom suffered the ravages of Alzheimer's disease), Henry tackles all the tough issues: spotting the warning signs of dementia, redefining sibling roles, doing a walk-through at an assisted living facility or nursing home, making the move, and coping with "take me home!" demands. She also explains the medical, legal, and insurance maze. In a time when almost 10 million Americans currently need long-term care, The Eldercare Handbook is an essential read.

This is a fantastic book! Buy this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is a well written, balanced guide for improving your interpersonal skills. Although written for healthcare professionals, it is very readable and anyone could pick it up and enjoy it.
I have been very pleased with the improvements I have made in my life and my practice since I have read this book. It is not religious or anything. It clearly defines what we need to do so that we will be liked, that's all. Then, it gives example stories. Some of the stories are really funny, too!
It is well written, fast, easy reading and very sage.
(I review it anonymously now so no one knows the secret of my transformation and how poorly I used to relate to other people! I plan to give this book to several nerdy colleagues.)

Editorial Review:

Love Your Patients! is a guide to the words and actions that healthcare workers can offer to enhance any patient's healthcare experience. Written by a psychologist-turned-Emergency Room physician, the advice is gentle and uncomplicated, yet vibrantly enhanced by the colorful anecdotes from life in the trenches of healthcare. The first section identifies love in healthcare as comprised of compassion, respect and humility. The second section critiques a dozen anecdotes which illustrate how good caregivers can behave rudely when they fail to act with love. The third section provides the scientific basis for the admonitions. Love Your Patients! will appeal to students in all fields of health care, practitioners at every level, hospital administrators looking to improve patient satisfaction, and managed care groups who wish to avoid complaints and litigations. It is easy to read - secular, but with spiritual overtones. It will change people's lives.

Not in depth enough 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I like the author but in this book, it just isnt enough information to apply to a crisis situation. There is a lot of useful facts but when it comes down to actually talking to the person in crisis, it fails to give you an idea of what to say or it is too vague, however, it does mention what not to say, which is also very important.
It is a great book for those interested in introductory knowledge and can even be used as a reference.
For those serious students of counseling, I don't think it goes in depth enough. It is well written however, and still a useful read.

Editorial Review:

David K. Switzer presents a clear, illustrative, practical manual for pastoral caregivers that covers the entire range of pastoral care emergencies typically faced by clergy, pastoral counselors, and lay caregivers such as Stephen Ministers and Befrienders. The chapters deal with such issues such as situational crises, hospital emergencies, ministry to the dying, bereavement, suicide, divorce, domestic violence, substance abuse, and psychiatric emergencies. The question of when and how to refer is discussed in the final chapter. The book is highly practical in approach, but still extremely sensitive to the theological issues at hand in ministering to those experiencing great emotional, mental, and physical distress.
