Editorial Review:

Students who study with the ATLAS OF FUNCTIONAL HISTOLOGY obtain the most lifelike learning of tissues and organs. It features 600 realistic color histology sections and 150 electron micrographs. Each figure has a detailed caption outlining the structures and their function to the system or body as a whole. The book is organized by body system, each chapter beginning with an introduction of that system and its function. To help students assess their skills, a unique self-testing section asks them to differentiate between tissues of similar appearance through the use of multiple choice questions. Detailed rationale on each option of the multiple-choice questions helps them understand the differences in function of similar looking tissue. After using the atlas, students will be able to quickly and correctly identify histology sections and discuss the structures in relation to body function.

Presents the highest quality set of histology images ever published for medical students, so students realistically see on paper exactly what they would see down the microscope. Includes clinical correlations to make histology clinically relevant and much more interesting for students. Provides comprehensive captions telling students which structures they need to recognize and explaining the function of these structures. Provides unique "Lookalikes" feature, which allows students to test themselves by differentiating between similar looking tissues from different origins.

Courageous, Well-Written, and Achingly Real 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

All of us at some point in our lives will need to confront the issues written about in this eloquent collection -- whether it's our parents, our spouses, our siblings, our friends, or even ourselves. The writers here tackle the subject with intimacy, poignancy, grace...and a great amount of courage.

There are stand-outs for me in this collection: the writer Helen Schulman asking her father, "We all love you, we still have fun together, we still can enjoy one another, does any of that help at all?" Her father's reply: "No, you and your love don't help me." As a daughter myself trying to tackle my mother's depression after my father's death, this line really resonated.

Then there's Eleanor Cooney's remarkable essay, "Death in Slow Motion", about her mother's descend into Altzheimer's disease and the toll it takes on her -- unflinchingly real, not at all flowery, straightforward and raw. Or Ann Hood's essay "In The Land of Little Girls", about the death of her five-year-old daughter...which broke my heart by the courage it took to go back to those emotions and write it so perfectly. And Amanda Fortini's "The Vital Role" about her own debilitating tropical illness and her symbiotic relationship with her caregiver: "a story that arose from a perfect confluence of needs: one person's desperate need to be cared for and another's equally urgent need to care."

I could go on and on about these gems, all focusing on the most elemental of needs -- connection, intimacy, loss, courage. This is an important book, and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Editorial Review:

Thirty million people today care for ailing family members in their own homes—a number that will increase dramatically over the next decade as baby boomers enter old age, as soldiers return home from war mentally and physically wounded, as medical advances extend lives and health insurance fails to cover them.

Offering both companionship and guidance to the people who find themselves caring for their intimates, An Uncertain Inheritance is a collection of essays from some of the country's most accomplished writers. Poignant, honest, sometimes heartbreaking, often wry, and funny, here is a book that examines caregiving from every angle, revealing the pain, intimacy, and grace inherent in this meaningful relationship.

Editorial Review:

There is emerging research that demonstrates the effect of one’s spiritual beliefs on general health and well-being. More and more information points to the necessity of doing a religious/spiritual profile on a patient—in addition to a physical and lifestyle assessment—in order to provide the optimum plan for health and healing. This book explains the whys, hows, whens, and whats of addressing these spiritual issues in a practical and concise format.

This book is intended as a guide for practicing physicians, medical students, and residents to help identify and address the spiritual needs of patients. Those who will benefit most will be physicians who wish to know how to integrate spirituality into clinical practice in an effective and sensitive manner. Other professionals, such as nurses and chaplains, may use this book as they interact with doctors, other health professionals, and hospital administrators.

It outlines clearly the following points:

Why address spirituality into patient care?

How does a physician identify and address spiritual needs?

When does one take a spiritual history during the course of medical evaluation? When does a physician provide spiritual support or address spiritual needs?

What is the impact that physician involvement in this area can have on the patient’s ability to cope with illness, on the doctor-patient relationship, patient compliance, and on the course of medical illness and response to treatment?

Are there ethical boundaries that should not be crossed?

Are there times when spiritual beliefs can actually interfere with medical care, leading to health problems, or worsen disease outcomes?

Editorial Review:

This book is a thoughtful, informative, and practical guide for anyone involved in caring for the seriously and chronically ill or dying. The connection between spirituality and medicine has been receiving a lot of attention in both the scientific and lay presses recently, but research and anecdotal evidence all indicate that spirituality is central to the care of the chronically ill and dying. It is therefore critical that healthcare providers who interact with seriously ill patients know how to address their spiritual needs.
This book presents current thinking on how spiritual care can be integrated into traditional caregiving. Part one discusses aspects of spirituality, such as presence, ethics, and relationships. Part two delves into a number of specific religious and theological traditions. Part three offers practical applications and tools, including storytelling, psychotherapy, dance, music, and the arts. Part four focuses on patients' stories and reflections. The book concludes with appendices that have sample advance directives for Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, and Muslim patients.
Volume editor Christina Puchalski is the director of the George Washington Institute of Spirituality and Health. She is also an associate professor of medicine at the George Washington University Medical Center and an active practicing physician and medical educator. Dr. Puchalski is nationally and internationally recognized as a pioneer in the integration of spirituality and healthcare. Chapters are authored by an impressive group of medical and religious experts, and patients' stories also appear throughout, offering real-world examples. The book features a foreword by the Dalai Lama.

Even more relevant today 4 out of 5 stars.
40 of 40 people found this review helpful.

I'm sorry to see that this book is out of print, because it's even more pertinent today than when it was first written. The author describes the problem of "burnout" common in people in the helping professions, and points out that its causes come from the work environment rather than the individual. This is in contrast to most other studies of burnout, which view it as strictly the individual's problem and thus something to be treated on the individual level. She identifies the institutional problems that can lead to burnout -- e.g., excessive workloads and lack of control -- and offers suggestions on how to improve the work environment. In the era of "managed care," underfunded schools, and lack of support (financial and emotional) for people in the helping professions, her advice is more important than ever. Her 1997 book is excellent, but it focuses more on corporations, while I think the helping professions still have the worst problems with burnout. The writing in this book is more heavily "academic," but it's a thorough and believable study, and still very much worth reading.

Editorial Review:

Doing Things shows how to provide a positive environment for persons with Alzheimer's disease by offering opportunities for social interaction and constructive, enjoyable activities. Zgola outlines the ways in which a patient's functional impairment can be assessed; the strengths, weaknesses, and needs most commonly encountered among persons with Alzheimer's disease; and ways activities can be tailored to accommodate them. She offers step-by-step instructions for selecting and presenting appropriate activities and includes cooking and crafts projects, a sample exercise routine, and a sample daily schedule. The techniques she describes are designed to promote a sense of security and self-esteem, by avoiding possible sources of confusion or confrontation.

Based on the highly successful program developed at one day-care facility for persons with dementia, Doing Things offers an invaluable guide for professionals and volunteers supervising activities at day-care centers and extended-care facilities -- as well as for individuals who are caring for patients at home. Throughout, Zgola's emphasis is on treating persons who have Alzheimer's disease with empathy, courtesy, and dignity.
