Bates case studies 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Teaching graduate nursing students is always a challenge. Case studies are a good way to challenge them. This set of case studies works well when using the Bates textbook.

Not all that great. 2 out of 5 stars.

For me, the book worked because our instructors used many of the vignettes and questions on our exam.

However, for the general student of medicine, this book is ridiculous. For example, after presenting a short patient vignette, it asks for a differential. Working with friends, I tried to come up with three reasonable diagnoses given the symptoms. The book would give three, but two of the three would be completely UNreasonable. It would say something like, "Diagnosis #1 relies on findings of A, B, C, and D. However, our patient does not report A, C, or D, so this diagnosis is unlikely."

I didn't find that to be at all helpful.

Additionally, the multiple choice and matching questions are quite easy, probably too easy to be useful for anyone more than a few months into your training, regardless of field (RN, PA, MD, etc...).

All in all, I think this book is a waste of money for most people. Just read the margin notes in Bates, and review the tables at the end of each chapter, and you'll get a much better review than this will provide.

Editorial Review:

Using actual case vignettes, this resource will help students apply their skills in history taking and physical examination and test their knowledge by answering case-based questions. This edition includes additional cases on the older adult and other new topics covered in the Ninth Edition of Bates' Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking.

Nice book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is the best orthopedic book for the medical student or intern, it has the basics of every common orthopedic pathologies and it serves it's purpose well, but i must recommend for the health professional to encourage reading more deeply to get true knowledge for practice, this book it's just a brush off! a quick reminder! a guideline!. Anyway, i'm happy with my purchase and would continue to buy from lange. Thank you.

Forget about it. 2 out of 5 stars.

This isn't the book I thought it would be. Too detailed when details weren't needed...and too basic when details would have been helpful. There are better books out there.

it makes you feel up-date in the vast field of orthopaedics 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book makes you feel so comfortable in the "up-date" orthopaedics literature, with no need to buy an expensive text-book, this manuable book gives us a chance to review very well any topic in this very vast field of orthopaedics. I think that in some moment the author is going to need a yearly edition of this practical work. This book seems to be the "musculoskeletal current" option...some changes are predictable, but they will come in next years, thak you Dr. Skinner, its a good job, junior and senior surgeons will apreciate your effort to give us this good and easy to use information data bank.

Editorial Review:

Concise, comprehensive, and logically organized, this find-it-now resource offers fingertip access to the diagnostic tools necessary for the definitive diagnosis and treatment of the most common musculo-skeletal disorders found in adults and children.

Look no further to master arrhythmia recognition 5 out of 5 stars.
24 of 25 people found this review helpful.

Arrhythmia recognition is the toughest part of EKG interpretation. Most books that teach it do so by illustrating each arrhythmia with a strip or two, usually using ideal examples. This approach leaves the reader ill prepared to recognize the variations that crop up in practice. The philosophy of this book is "you can't really know an arrhythmia unless you see it over and over".
This book covers all the atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. Each brief but thorough chapter concisely explains the electrophysiology of the abnormal rhythm, well illustrated by copious full color graphics, and ends with a series of analyzed strips and EKGs that show the arrythmia in all its possible presentations. As an example, I've always had a problem with recognizing atrial flutter at 2:1 conduction (anybody can recognize the 'saw tooth' pattern at higher ratios). After reading the chapter on the subject, I had it down cold.
There are also quizzes and practice EKGs to drive home the skill, and the book has a corresponding Web site with further resources. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

This text is a graphics intensive training manual on arrhythmia recognition. There are hundreds of individual rhythyem strips contained within the book, each with a small descriptive table outlining the various abnormalities in a logical, easy-to-follow sequence.

Waste-O-Money 1 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Bought this book as it was 'required' for nursing courses. I suspect this is the only reason this book is ever even purchased, because it IS NOT HELPFUL! Never seen such a convoluted resource, this was the WORST. IMO, Carpenito is obviously riding on her laurels from past publications. If you are a beginning nursing student that is attempting to make heads or tails of care planning, save yourself the agony now. THUMBS DOWN!

Editorial Review:

This unique text is the definitive reference for the formulation of nursing care plans for independent nursing care. It contains care plans for all ill adults as well as those with specific clinical problems. It also includes research validated identification of frequently encountered nursing diagnoses and collaborative problems. This easy-to-read text has a strong documentation focus providing guidelines and complete coverage of nursing care. A new appendix includes a case study that illustrates how to use this text as a guide to creating care plans for clients with multiple medical diagnoses.

Excellent teaching/learning tool for ECG interpretation 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This book is great! It's easy to understand, and reviews lessons frequently. It is both comprehensive and easy to understand. Even individuals with learning difficulties will find this a valuable tool. I am purchasing it for a reference book for the staff. I LOVED it!

This simple, innovative method for understanding and interpreting 3-lead ECG readings is now revised and updated for a 2nd edition. Complex concepts are presented in a fun, engaging format that uses humor, cartoons, and personal stories to walk the reader through the entire ECG process - from finding a heart beat, to taking an electrocardiogram, to interpreting the patient's heart rhythm, and understanding how to treat the patient. Commonly asked questions and answers are interspersed throughout the text to help clarify concepts and procedures. Building on basic concepts presented in the first part of the book, the second part teaches readers how to interpret 25 common dysrhythmias and provides the description and treatment of each.

Just what I was looking for 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

When I recently went to work for a Hospice service, I needed a book I could take with me on the road. A friend recommended this one, and I couldn't be more happy. It includes every nearly every blood test, normal lab values, whether or not the patient needs to be NPO, and even which tube to draw the blood in. Just the right information, and in a convenient size, too.

Outdated and difficult to use 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I was really disappointed in the usefulness of this reference. Many current tests were not included in this book. The organization of the book was very poor and even common tests were difficult to locate. I wound up buying another book.

Editorial Review:

This easy-to-use reference is a pocket-sized lifesaver. Organized, efficient and completely reliable, this succinct handbook offers the most current information available on common laboratory and diagnostic tests. Designed to be used by nursing students and practicing nurses in the clinical setting, the book offers quick and easy access to enhance confidence and eliminate potential errors. Nursing diagnoses and interventions are included for well-rounded client care.
