The uses of this manual... 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The DSM-IV (and DSM-IV-TR) is the primary manual used by clinicians to diagnose mental disorders. The cons are that 1) the manual categorizes mental disorders when it is entirely possible (perhaps even probable) that mental disorders lie on a continuum shared by normal behaviors, 2) political issues can and do influence which and how mental disorders are included in the manual, and 3) that interrater reliability (the degree of agreement among diagnoses when using the manual) is somewhere around 70% (clearly, not perfect). The pros are that 1) even if one thought abnormal behavior was on the same continuum of normal behavior, no one else has yet suggested a better way of assessing and diagnosing mental disorders, 2) the manual increases the ability to communicate about these disorders among clinicians and patients (which can be beneficial when considering treatment), and 3) it comprises a nice summary of what we know about mental disorders in a somewhat reasonably organized fashion.

So far, the benefits outweigh the problems (and frankly, we really don't have a better alternative). Clinicians may use it to diagnose, students may use it get a summary of what we know about particular mental disorders (but should refrain from diagnosing themselves or others as the criterias listed still need clinical expertise in judging whether or not the criteria applies to any one individual and/or behavior).

Editorial Review:

...the ultimate mental health reference...presents diagnostic criteria for such problems as dissociative, mood, somatoform, or sleep disorders, schizophrenia, dementia, and delirium.

The Best Yet 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 8 people found this review helpful.

So many books try and explain ecg's in language that is understandable to the practicing RN but this is the only book I've found that is useful. I'm buying a new version to replace my very worn out one.

The book for cardiology students studying for the boards 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you are studying for the American Board of Internal Medicine Cardiology Boards or some other similar exam, this is the text to purchase. It covers many common yet important electrocardiograms that will frequent board questions. I studied for the Cardiology boards with this text, and found the examination questions to mirror many of the electrocardiograms in this text. As the coding is so similar to exams, it provides excellent preparation material.

Essential 4 out of 5 stars.

Essential for the Cardiovascular boards. O'Keefe et al have put together a classic teaching book, although their interpretation of ECGs at times seem to be inconsistent. I used the previous edition, so perhaps they have edited some of these inconsistencies out.

Editorial Review:

Extensive review for students preparing for exams. Includes more than 100 ECGs to interpret and over 1,000 review questions. Softcover.

Great contribution to medical education, poor photographs 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I bought this textbook together with Ferri's Clinical advisor with great enthusiasm. Though this book has fewer contributors, it offers enormous amount of information on physical assessment. Other than the reference pages at the end of each chapter, you cannot spot a single page that does not have a drawing, a photograph, charts, tables, or tips. You cannot resist but feel great appreciation to the hard work invested in this masterpiece.

In the era of Internet, when many folks opted to stay away from books, this book's style offers very competitive alternative to electronic media. The only drawback is its blurred black and white photos. Although the author attempted to compensate for such deficit by many informative drawings, yet better quality photos help contemporary readers to stay focused longer during reading.

Of course, the book is about physical assessment so it stops short of complete orthopedic textbook. Each joint is discussed in terms of its applied anatomy, history taking, examination, and ends by case studies, followed by extensive lists of references. In addition to regional assessments of joints, chapters 14 and 15 discuss the assessment of gait and posture, chapter 16 of the amputee, chapter 17 of emergency sports, and chapter 18 of physical evaluation prior to participation in sport. The eighteen chapters extend over a 1000 large sized pages with two color printing, which make its reading a breathe.

Editorial Review:

Univ. of Alberta, Canada. Brandon/Hill Allied Health List selection (#273). Textbook, for students, provides a systematic approach to the assessment of the neuromusculoskeletal system and an understanding of the reasons for the various aspects of assessment. Includes major revisions and a new chapter on amputee assessment. Previous edition: c1997. DNLM: Bone Diseases--diagnosis.

The best-written MRI book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I own many, many books on medical imaging, specifically MRI. This book encompassess the physics, sequences, imaging parameters, artifacts, contrast, and clinical application of these in very simple language with great illustrations. The authors have succeeded in publishing the best-written and most thorough of study/review books out there today.

Editorial Review:

Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a valuable technology used in diagnostic radiography. The clear, anatomical images which can be produced in any plane, coupled with inherent safety for the patient and long-term cost effectiveness have promoted the use and availability of MRI around the world. This edition provides a comprehensive introduction to MRI, describing the essential concepts and explaining the physics theory of MR in detail. The text has been thoroughly revised and updated with many new illustrations and images. Key topics, including K space and echo planar imaging, have been fully expanded to take account of current practice. Learning points and a questions section aim to help the reader to evaluate their understanding of the text. This book should be of interest to all student and practising radiographers, technologists and radiologists involved in MRI.

Great handheld reference for nursing students! 5 out of 5 stars.
40 of 40 people found this review helpful.

I use this handheld book for quick references at clinicals and in class. It has great color illustrations and is very easy to read. The full sized text was assigned in my assessment class so I went ahead and bought the handheld. I would reccomend it to any nursing student. It covers everything, and at the end it has a full scale assessment in detail that I found very helpful on my final grade for a head to toe assessment.

Clinical Laboratory Science Review 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is concise, all the choices have detailed information for ruling out and choosing the correct answer. It's great for a test practice in choosing the right answer and not to look for a clue or take a wild guest.

Great Book 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My graduating class had an exit exam before graduation, this is the review book that our teacher got our material from. Some of the questions are hard, but every question is explained on how they got that answer. There is over 5 pages of color plates in the book and they each have questions. You also get a CD-rom with your book and that thing is awesome. You can create your own quizzes or take their 200 question color plate quiz. The book really helps. I love it personally.

Editorial Review:

Clinical Laboratory Science Review is the essential resource for students preparing to sit for the certification and licensure examinations in clinical laboratory science. The order and progression of questions parallels the presentation of classroom content in CLS, and the answers serve as a study guide as well as a self-assessment. Plus, the third edition of this popular review book has been completely updated, and now includes over 850 additional, new questions on a student CD-ROM!
