Is it really good? 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The eleventh edition is good in many aspects. But it cannot be denied that it is not as good as Koneman's book. Bailey and Scott is more suitable only for the bench technicians and not for researchers and graduate students. The book churns out table after table, in the name of comparative analysis. A student's mind will have difficulty in memorising and reproducing tables in the exam. In that sense, the lucid style of presentation in Koneman is commendable. Probably, the author of B&S did not have 'the student' in their mind when they wrote it. Another grossly lacking area is Parasitology. When compared to books written by Indian authors like SC Parija and Chatterjea, Bailey and Scott lags far behind. Probably, it is because parasitic infections are less in the US, which is why this area has been under emphasised.
As a gradute student in India, I would strongly encourage my friends and fellow microbiologists to singularly follow Koneman alone. Trying to use Koneman with Bailey and Scott or trying to substitute Koneman with Bailey and Scott is an exercise in futility.
These are my personal views only. Perhaps, students who want to finish studying clinical microbiology quickly because of the proximity of the exam dates, can go for Bailey and Scott. For MD students like me, we all in our college unanimously vote for the
Koneman.

Best choice for medical students who desire an introduction to Obstetrics an Gynecology. Includes guidelines for treatment. The first book at this speciallity for newcomers.

Great book for 3rd year med school 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I used this book as a supplement to my 3rd year clerkship in med school. It is not a huge text, so it was great for looking up the details that were not found in Blueprints, especially if you are interested in OB for a career. The book is well organized and is easy to read. Too much to read for board review or shelf exams, but an excellent reference book for OB/GYN.

    Editorial Review:

Our brightest, most creative children and adults are often being misdiagnosed with behavioral and emotional disorders such as ADHD, Oppositional-Defiant Disorder, Bipolar, OCD, or Asperger’s. Many receive unneeded medication and inappropriate counseling as a result.

Physicians, psychologist, and counselors are unaware of characteristics of gifted children and adults that mimic pathological diagnoses. Six nationally prominent health care professionals describe ways parents and professionals can distinguish between gifted behaviors and pathological behaviors.

Features include a Foreword by Ronald E. Fox, Psy.D., Ph.D., Past President of the American Psychological Association, and:

    • Written for parents and professionals • Characteristics of gifted children and adults • Diagnoses most commonly given to gifted children and adults • Traits of diagnoses incorrectly given to gifted children and adults • Guidelines to avoid mislabeling gifted children • Parent-child relationship problems • Issues for gifted adults • Advice for selecting a counselor or health care professional

"Misdiagnosis and Dual Diagnoses of Gifted Children and Adults" has been endorsed by three past presidents of the American Psychological Association, two neurologists, and two family practice physicians.

The standard for teaching EBM 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

As a physician-teacher of EBM to internal medicine residents, this is the best book I've run across for this purpose. We utilize the reader's guides, first published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal and later in JAMA, written by Guyatt, Sackett, and others, which are perfectly complemented by this volume. I recommend it to all of the residents and have purchased multiple copies for house staff use (although I can't seem to keep them on the shelf...) It makes learning EBM fun and highlights its usefulness and, most importantly for busy physicians, speed. Worth reading for every physician interested in practicing medicine based on only the best evidence.

    Editorial Review:

A collection of handouts for Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) workshops run at the Centre for Evidence-based Medicine, University of Queensland which have been attractively presented in full colour as an ideal tool for learning EBM skills individually and in a group setting.

Written by world famous teachers of EBM, the book is split into three sections Part 1: Introduction to evidence-based medicine, Part 2: The steps in evidence-based medicine, Part 3: Resources and further reading which take you through the principles of EBM. Helpful exercises based on journal articles are included as well as advice on how to access the relevant resources. Designed to provide clear help in finding useful answers from the literature for clinicians, the processes are laid out and then worked through with clinical examples.

Great teaching aid for clinical psychology students 5 out of 5 stars.
39 of 39 people found this review helpful.

Great way to see how the DSM-IV criteria apply to real cases. Beware, this is the exact same (with exception to the references to the DSM-IV-TR page numbers) as the 1994 DSM-IV Casebook. So, if you already own the older version, don't bother wasting your money.

Great case book. Clear, interesting, insightful. Good for brushing up on your diagnostic skills.

    Editorial Review:

Newly updated for DSM-IV-TR, the DSM-IV-TR® Casebook facilitates the transition from the concepts and terminology of DSM-IV-TR to actual clinical situations by providing clinical vignettes for illustration and study. Carefully updated, it helps both students and clinicians visualize DSM-IV-TR disorders through the use of clinical vignettes. Each is followed by a discussion of the DSM-IV-TR differential diagnosis. The DSM-IV-TR® Casebook is highly recommended for clinicians to help them develop a deeper comprehension of all diagnostic categories.

    Editorial Review:

This famous text is much beloved by medical students and physicians-in-training throughout the English-speaking world, as its many editions indicate. Despite its relatively narrow focus, it is chock full of the pearls of clinical wisdom that students and practitioners treasure, and many of these lessons apply to medicine in general. The book was well characterized by a reviewer of an earlier edition for The New England Journal of Medicine: "If only one book about surgery could be made available to physicians from all specialties, it should probably be Silen's recent revision of Cope's Early Diagnosis of the Acute Abdomen. Since the book first appeared more than 30 years ago, it has remained the classic treatise on the initial approach to abdominal pain." Because acute, severe abdominal pain is still a common problem whose misdiagnosis can result in quick death, each generation of beginning physicians is faced with the urgency of learning to make a diagnosis in this high anxiety situation and they appreciate the wise, humane, precisely detailed guidance offered by Cope and Silen. For the 21st Edition, Dr. Silen has again updated the text in a respectful but significant way. He has strengthened its emphasis on pitfalls in the interpretation of CT and ultrasound scans, on misadventures caused by over-reliance on blood tests and radiographs, and on careful history-taking to avoid the costs of inappropriate lab tests. He has also reviewed the data from a randomized clinical trial indicating that patients should receive adequate analgesia while awaiting a definitive diagnosis, a dictum that is contrary to traditional teaching.

Great book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was so helpful to the new nursing student. Prior to exams I would read the chapter related to the topic and always receive further clarification. The diagrams and examples always helped things make sense. Other classmates ran out to buy this also as well as the visual assessment guide. I have since purchased more of the Incredibly easy series books and have been very pleased.

Great for beginning students 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

As a 1st year nursing student taking health assessment, I found this book really helpful. It had great pictures that tells you how and where to assess certain parts of the body. It also has some explanations that go along with what is being done. I think, though, that it is extremely simplified, but for a beginning practitioner, you can't go wrong with this book. It really helps you visualize what you should be doing.

    Editorial Review:

Building on and strengthening the reader-friendly, award-winning Incredibly Easy! Series(R) features, Health Assessment Made Incredibly Visual! maximizes visual learning to help nurses master patient assessment. Hundreds of detailed and colorful photographs, diagrams, charts, and other visual aids guide nurses through each step of performing a head-to-toe physical examination and identifying normal and abnormal findings. Lighthearted logos reinforce key points. Best Picture graphically displays the best way to perform a technique. Take Note features lifelike charts showing how to document findings. Outside the Norm presents clear illustrations of abnormal findings. Memory Board presents visual mnemonics to help nurses remember difficult concepts. "Vision Quest" puzzles test readers' knowledge in an entertaining way.
