Invaluable 5 out of 5 stars.
24 of 27 people found this review helpful.

I got an earlier edition of this book in Physical Therapy school and it was invaluable in teaching the finer points of goniometry. I constantly used it as a source of information, until I became comfortable with measuring joint range of motion. Since I am now working in the inpatient arena, I mostly repeatedly measure knees, but refer back to it when I need to brush up on another joint. It has clear pictures and overall is a great reference book for anyone who has to evaluate joint ranges of motion.

Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent as easily describes how to do ROM of all sorts of joints. A great book for a student and practitioner that needs to look up the more obscure joints. It has tables as well for normal ROM. You can't go wrong with this one.

Editorial Review:

Ohio Univ., Athens. Student manual provides comprehensive coverage of the subject and includes extensive use of halftone photographs. Testing procedures use a two-page format, with color to enhance headings, charts, and tables. This edition is consistent with the APTA's Guide to Physical Therapist Practice Terminology. Previous edition: c1995. Wire-spiral binding.

POOR QUALITY 2 out of 5 stars.
29 of 32 people found this review helpful.

This is a very valuable book, only to see that all pages are tissue paper thin. There are also no dividers to separate the sections and the pages are too thin to put tabs on. This is a POCKET GUIDE that will fall apart fast when used as such.

think twice 2 out of 5 stars.

poor quality of pictures, although the pocket size is valuable, agree with previous review on thin pages...bought this book as a course requirement....hardly used book

The Best Photo Manual Out There!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is the best photo manual I ever purchased! This book got me through school with ease. I was the first one in my class to buy the book. When I showed it to my classmates, they loved it and EVERY SINGLE ONE of my classmates bought it. I especially like that the picture is on one page and the name and description of the instrument on another. This layout makes it very handy for quizzing yourself or quizzing each other. I have other photo manuals that are no where near as helpful as this one! Purchase this book. You will not be disapointed!

Better off? 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

An inevitable must for all new residents coming into the world of anaesthesia and medical technology.
Each new edition of the book gets more and more modern equipment oriented - losing out on the simplistic educational value of the older equipment. The gradual loss of the Non-rebreathing valves, from the second edition followed by Goldman vaporizer, EMO, OMV etc has reduced the level of 'ease of understanding' for fresh residents. Indeed, the focus on high tech is a drawback for practice of field/military/third world anaesthesia. There is something to be learnt from the old Ward, Ehrenwerth or even the Farman for youngsters.
Other than this, an excellent & comprehensive textbook. Could have done with a little more detail on advanced newer technologies being introduced.
Dr SK Singh, Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiologist, India

Very helpful study guide 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Of the several books I own on surgical instrumentation, this one has the most clear and useful pictures of the instruments. The spiral binding is student-friendly and the info on each picture is a helpful study guide. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to learn their instruments.

Not much on the differentiation, but a good catalogue 3 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

The title led me to believe the book would go into depth regarding the subtleties in differentiating between instruments which are very much alike. Instead, the book acts as a good text for the surgical tech student who is still working on getting the basics under his belt. Instruments aren't really differentiated in the book so much as listed with pictures according to specialty. It's good as a general reference, but not for any detailed study.

Editorial Review:

Offers a close-up look at the tips of over 600 cutting, clamping, grasping, retracting, and other surgical instruments to help readers clearly distinguish among them. Includes more than 1200 colour photos of actual individual surgical instruments. Spiral bound.

Outdated 2 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This book was wonderful when it first came out but is now sorely outdated and lacking in new terminology. Don't waste your money as many terms you need will be missing.

An updated classic 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

A review on this page refers to this book as being "outdated." Well, that reviewer needs the latest edition, obviously. Stedman's puts out a new edition of each of its books every three years or so, and I get the feeling the other reviewer was looking at a 1998 edition. Well, here's the latest for 2004.

As with all of Stedman's medical word books, this one has several hundred pages of cross-referenced terms for almost any kind of medical and surgical equipment, with listings under company name, general type of equipment, and specialty use of said equipment. For example, in my 2001 edition "Promex biopsy needle" is found under P and N, while B contains an entry for biopsy needle. This is golden.

The one reservation I have with this particular one of the Stedman's publications is that the field of equipment manufacturing seems to be the fastest-changing there is, and so this one book does indeed become a bit outdated even within the year of its publication. A good Google.com search is a necessary component to the MT's adequate use of this book. However, I could not do my job correctly without Stedman's, and this volume has a valuable place in my library as well as any of their specialty books.

Editorial Review:

Completely updated with more than 36,000 new terms, this Fifth Edition is the most current, accurate, and comprehensive reference for terminology related to medical and surgical equipment. Coverage includes equipment used in diagnosis, testing, procedures, operations, and treatment. Content is derived from ongoing reviews of print and electronic journals and manufacturer sources across medical and surgical specialties. Organized alphabetically and cross-referenced by first and last word, this book provides quick look-up of medical and surgical equipment terms. Appendices include images, sample reports, common terms by procedure, and leading manufacturers and Websites.

Good at laying out the rules 5 out of 5 stars.
24 of 24 people found this review helpful.

Mfg. Engr. manager for a large medical device company.

After spending 2.5 days with an FDA auditor, I realized that I did not know what was expected by the regulatory body in terms of process validations, equipment installation and maintenance and all of the record-keeping and documentation that is required for them.

To learn all of that quickly, I purchased and studied this book. For each subject (process validations, equipment, calibration and all other areas), it lists the FDA regulation, the corresponding ISO regulation and then has an "FDA guidance" section that breaks down both into plainer English. It was helpful to have all of the information in one place.

The frustrating part with the FDA is that they won't tell you exactly how to do things, they'll just lay out the rules and you have to figure out how to get there from here. This book is good at laying out all of the rules.

I would recommend this book to any level person who may have to answer to an auditor. There are sections on Design Control, Nonconforming Production, Labeling and Packaging, Statistical Techniques and more that apply to each area of the business.
