Editorial Review:

Quite possibly every female over the age of 12 will find this huge book enlightening, pain saving, and perhaps even lifesaving. Think of it as a much more empowering and holistic Our Bodies, Ourselves. Northrup is a gynecologist who acknowledges the power of natural therapies and herbs, but also maintains that allopathic treatments, including surgery, are sometimes best. In Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom, she covers the treatment of many physical concerns--among them PMS, menstrual cramps, breast cancer, fibroids, endometriosis, infertility, depression, childbirth, abortion, cystitis, and menopause--explaining how many of these physical problems have roots in emotional upsets. For example, a woman who is unhappy with her marriage may be infertile because deep down, she knows that her husband is not the right man to have children with; a teenager who has cramps may be having problems accepting society's expectations of her as a woman.

Some readers may be put off at first by Northrup's obviously unconventional ways of thinking. Her medical approach is decidedly feminist, blaming our "addictive" and patriarchal society for many of the health problems plaguing women. She clearly illustrates her ideas, however, by drawing upon two decades of experience from her medical practice and citing dozens of her patients' remarkable personal stories. Northrup also delineates the best way to go about tuning in to one's body and mind in order to start the healing process, a self-induced therapy of sorts. She also includes in the book a copy of the eye-opening health inventory she gives her clients. It includes unusual questions such as "Are you bored with your life?" and "Do you have enough friends or neighbors?"

This book will be of special benefit to women who are pregnant or entering menopause. Northrup is an unequivocal believer in natural births and her dialogue on the birthing process will remove the fears of even the most petrified mother-to-be. She criticizes episiotomies (she should know; she's given birth without one) and supports midwifery. She also warns against the harmfulness of cesarean births and includes illustrations of acupressure points that help turn around a breech baby.

For women in perimenopause or menopause, Northrup will help turn this life phase into one of peace and personal growth instead of one of suffering. She was one of the first doctors to use natural progesterone to treat menopausal symptoms, and this revised edition includes a clear primer on the latest in hormone replacement therapy and how to determine if it's right for you. Northrup also expounds upon the benefits of acupuncture and herbalism--as well as emotional self-analysis--for alleviating hot flashes and mood swings. --Erica Jorgensen

A fascinating analysis! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is a fascinating analysis of research regarding human evolution. It puts together different theories of how we became the way we are, and reports both the supporting and rejecting evidence for each theory. Additionally, it is well-written and highly engaging.

The content is good but the quality of the book not 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The quality of this book I think is very good, the way in which the history is related and the content of the book are very good. The subject is developed very well and the way in which we learn the importance of the sex in the combat with parasites and virus is amazing. In general, the content of the book is very good and interesting.

Though, the quality of paper in the book that I received is very bad, the impression is not clear and the book is very fragile, is a shame because the book is very good but with this quality of book the interest in read it decrease.

May be is my version, but I have not found another version in paperback.

Editorial Review:

Referring to Lewis Carroll's Red Queen from Through the Looking-Glass, a character who has to keep running to stay in the same place, Matt Ridley demonstrates why sex is humanity's best strategy for outwitting its constantly mutating internal predators. The Red Queen answers dozens of other riddles of human nature and culture -- including why men propose marriage, the method behind our maddening notions of beauty, and the disquieting fact that a woman is more likely to conceive a child by an adulterous lover than by her husband. Brilliantly written, The Red Queen offers an extraordinary new way of interpreting the human condition and how it has evolved.

Hope for families without answers 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Miscarriage is tragic. Add to that doctors who often have no answers, and parents can feel hopeless after repeated loss. This book provides answers for why losses occur, and how future losses can be prevented. Many of the treatments discussed are outside of mainstream care guidleines- but these are the same old sets of rules that leave so many families without answers. Dr. Beer does a great job explaining his treatments, and any woman who still wonders why she lost multiple pregnancies should read this book. I lost four children before finally being diagnosed with two treatable conditions. It's because of people like Dr. Beer that women like me can end up having our families.

A baby is almost guaranteed if you read this book 5 out of 5 stars.

If your best friend was a book it would be this one. Dr Beer describes in easy to understand words how the immune system can go into overkill in some women. The result is miscarriage, IVF failure and infertility. But these outcomes can be prevented with the right tests and treatments. I read this book and found it technical when necessary but with lots of human interest stories and studies to back everything up. The authors did a good job making this book accessible to ordinary women and also credible for when they take it to show their doctors. It is not dry like the other reviewer said, it is factual and makes a complex subject understandable. The book is ahead of its time and will make infertility and miscarriage a far less frequent event if only it was more widely known to the medical profession. I had twins as a result of Dr Beer's treatments. I wasted many years and many $s consulting with narrow minded doctors before finding him. I recommend this book with all my heart to all those women who were once suffering like I was. The tests and treatments are out there and this book tells you where to find them.

Still good, but in bad need of updating 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Contraceptive Technology is perhaps the best book available for understanding and using contraception. It should be in the office of every gynecologist, family physician and nurse practitioner and family planning clinic. The book explains complicated concepts in accurate, but easy to understand language.

But it has not been updated since 1998 and it is now somewhat out-of-date. Most of the information in the book is still solid, but since publication, new technologies and understandings have occurred and these new data make it imperative that a new edition be issued before this book can maintain its role as the "bible" on reproductive health and technology.

Editorial Review:

New scientific and medical developments in reproductive health have emerged in the past 5 years. This latest edition of Contraceptive Technology focuses on the benefits of a variety of safe and effective contraceptive methods, enabling physicians to counsel their patients on some of the most important decisions that will shape their lives.

Edited for ob/gyns, reproductive medicine MDs, gynecologists and primary care physicians specializing in women's health, the 19th edition of Contraceptive Technology continues to provide recommendations that will ensure that every pregnancy is intended and as safe as possible.

Editorial Review:

Introducing the only clinically proven program—steeped in ancient Chinese healing traditions—that has enabled hundreds of infertile couples to conceive.

At Wu’s Healing Center in San Francisco, miracles are happening. Women and their partners come to the clinic—often from across the country-- to fulfill a passionately held yet fragile dream: to conceive and deliver the healthy baby that mainstream doctors have told them they cannot have. Using traditional Chinese medical techniques, sometimes integrated with Western fertility treatments, Dr. Angela Wu is helping these couples experience the miracle of birth.

In this book, Dr. Wu details a proven 6-part self-care regimen that helps create the internal harmony and balance vital to conception. Her techniques not only enhance the results and reduce the side effects of in vitro and other Western fertility treatments, they also shorten labor and speed postpartum recovery. Babies benefit too, adopting regular sleep patterns more quickly and getting sick less frequently.

At a time when one in five U.S. couples is struggling with fertility problems, this practical and uplifting volume, filled with the inspirational stories of Dr. Wu’s grateful patients, will be a godsend.

Excellent Review for a low yield subject on the Boards 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is much more concise than the new version. This little book helps you put the H.Y. facts of embryo together not just as a subject on its own but in conjunction to pathology. I would specially recommend the first 3 chapters to get a quick idea of embryo genesis and the cardio, respiratory, GI sections for quick kill on the congenital abnormalities that are extensively talked about in Pathology. I particularly recommend to read the latter chapters alongside with Goljan's Rapid Review Pathology.

Editorial Review:

High-Yield(TM) Embryology, Third Edition provides a concise, focused review of the most important embryology information needed for the USMLE Step 1. Chapters cover prefertilization events and the embryonic period, embryologic development of each organ system, chromosomal abnormalities, inherited diseases, teratology and more. To prepare students for the clinical vignettes on the USMLE, the book includes numerous clinical cases with words and phrases that patients use. A mini-atlas at the end of each chapter presents photographs, MRIs, CT scans, and radiographs of various congenital malformations.

good, but possibly confusing 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

While this book is very good in its discussion on sexuality, my one problem is that the pictures are quite artsy. This will be interesting for children, but there is the good possibility that they will be confused as to what the body parts actually look like. With supplemental pictures and and adult ready to answer questions, this is a good book to help teach children.

Editorial Review:

"Mom, where do babies come from?" Many parents live in fear of the day their child asks that question—which inevitably happens, often as early as the preschool years. Here is a picture book designed especially for young children who are becoming sexually aware but aren’t ready to learn about sexual intercourse. Written with warmth and honesty, Amazing You! presents clear and age-appropriate information about reproduction, birth, and the difference between girls’ and boys’ bodies. Lynne Cravath’s whimsical illustrations enliven the text, making this a book that parents will gladly share with their young ones.

Editorial Review:

Anyone who has been following the new brain science in the popular press--and even those whose casual reading includes journals along the lines of Psychoneuroendocrinology--will be fascinated by the puckish observations of Brown University biologist Anne Fausto-Sterling, whose provocative and erudite essays easily establish the cultural biases underlying current scientific thought on gender. She goes on to critique the science itself, exposing inconsistencies in the literature and weaknesses in the rhetorical and theoretical structures that support new research. "One of the major claims I make in this book," she explains, "is that labeling someone a man or a woman is a social decision. We may use scientific knowledge to help us make the decision, but only our beliefs about gender--not science--can define our sex. Furthermore, our beliefs about gender affect what kinds of knowledge scientists produce about sex in the first place." Whether discussing genital surgery on intersex infants or the amorous lives of lab rats, the author is unfailingly clear and convincing, and manages to impart humor to subjects as seemingly unpromising as neuroanatomy and the structure of proteins. --Regina Marler
