Editorial Review:

The intense policing of women’s reproductive capacity places women’s health and human rights in great peril. Poor women are pressured to undergo sterilization. Women addicted to illicit drugs risk arrest for carrying their pregnancies to term. Courts, child welfare, and law enforcement agencies fail to recognize the efforts of battered and incarcerated women to care for their children. Pregnant inmates are subject to inhumane practices such as shackling during labor and poor prenatal care. And decades after Roe, the criminalization of certain procedures and regulation of abortion providers still obstruct women's access to safe and private abortions.

In this important work, Jeanne Flavin looks beyond abortion to document how the law and the criminal justice system police women's rights to conceive, to be pregnant, and to raise their children. Through vivid and disturbing case studies, Flavin shows how the state seeks to establish what a “good woman” and “fit mother” should look like and whose reproduction is valued. With a stirring conclusion that calls for broad-based measures that strengthen women’s economic position , choice-making, autonomy, sexual freedom, and health care, Our Bodies, Our Crimes is a battle cry for all women in their fight to be fully recognized as human beings. At its heart, this book is about the right of a woman to be a healthy and valued member of society independent of how or whether she reproduces.

The facts of life 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful book that is used as a teaching tool. It is a beautifully illustrated 3-d book on the facts of life. One can use this book to explain to their children about the facts of life...pregnancy and childbirth. Practioners can use this book to explain to their patients about pregnancy/fetal development and child birth. This book is for everyone. A great book to have on your bookshelf. Definitely worth the money!

It's such a great book; great pictures. I think it may be a little too complex for 4-5 year olds. But kids older than this would benefit. Read it w/your kids.

Bio: Old but Good 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am a little surprised that my instructor used this book seeing as it is about 4 editions old. Other than that it is a good book.

Editorial Review:

With the growing size of the elderly population comes an increased interest in aging as a subject of research and study. Human Aging: Biological Perspectives is written for the one-quarter or one-semester introductory level course and is aimed at students with little or no science background. The main structure of the text follows a body systems approach. In addition to the introductory chapter and a chapter covering molecules, cells, and the theories of aging, each body system is covered in its own chapter.

I'll prescribe it for my patients 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I've often wondered if our patients have any clue what it's like being an OB/GYN. If they don't then this very funny book will give them some insight into the craziness. It had my husband and I in tears, we were laughing so hard. The middle of the night phone calls were my favorite. That could be a book in itself. All OB/GYNs should get this book and when you're done laughing, put it in your waiting room, or get one for each exam room, then your patients won't mind when you are running behind.

Editorial Review:

What do you get when a Seinfeld writer marries an OB/GYN? A doctor with a funny delivery. Actually, lots of funny deliveries. Marc Jaffe's job was coming up with hysterical stories for Seinfeld, but nothing was funnier than the stories his gynecologist wife would tell. So, he decided to write this laugh-a-page book about life married to an Ob/gyn. It includes all the crazy stories his wife tells about: * Flying Placentas * Sex toy parties * Immaculate conceptions * Intimate tattoos * Ridiculous 4:00 am phone calls...and more comical incidents of gynecologic and obstetric intrigue. While sleeping with your gynecologist would be wrong, reading Sleeping With Your Gynecologist is very right.

Great addition to library for pediatricians 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Many pediatricians and pediatrics residents own Smith's Recognizable Patterns of Malformation. However, this text is not as widely used and discussed. It's a great addition to "...Patterns of Malformation". Mechanical deformation patterns often overlap with malformation sequences, and the text is careful to separate the two and focus on deformations secondary to fetal constraint, fetal position and presentation.

Many issues pertinent to general and subspecialty pediatric practice are covered. On a newborn nursery rotation, I used the book repeatedly when encountering various deformations in newborns including: calcaneovalgus, metatarsus adductus, talipes equinovarus, DDH, polydactyly (pre-axial and post-axial). The pictures are color and of high quality. Each deformity is defined. Epidemiology, work-up, management and treatment strategies are discussed.

A great addition to your library if you work in a pediatric field.

Editorial Review:

Contraception is not an invention of modern times, nor is it a purely personal matter. Social institutions such as the church and the state have exerted their influence as effectively as doctors, population theorists, and the early pioneers of the feminist movement. All of these claim a special expertise in matters of ethics and morality, and so have shaped the discourses on and practices of birth control over the centuries.

In this engaging new book Robert Jütte offers a history of contraception from the Ancient world to the present day. He distinguishes two broad phases: first, a long phase, extending from the Ancient world up to the 18th century, in which birth control was part of a traditional form of sexual knowledge what Jütte calls, following the French social philosopher Michel Foucault, the ars erotica. In the second phase, which began in the 19th century, practices of birth control are increasingly shaped by the emerging models of scientific knowledge, while still retaining some vestiges of the erotic arts.

In addition to the contraceptives we know and use today, from coitus interruptus to the condom and the pill, Jütte considers other methods of birth control as diverse as the use of herbal potions and vaginal pessaries, the castration of young boys and the enforced sterilization of men and women. This comprehensive history of one of the oldest and most widespread of human practices offers a rich and nuanced account of how men and women across the centuries have struggled with the needs both for sexual gratification and for limitation of offspring, while also looking beyond the present to catch a glimpse of how contraception might evolve in the future.

Editorial Review:

Susan Markens takes on one of the hottest issues on the fertility front--surrogate motherhood--in a book that illuminates the culture wars that have erupted over new reproductive technologies in the United States. In an innovative analysis of legislative responses to surrogacy in the bellwether states of New York and California, Markens explores how discourses about gender, family, race, genetics, rights, and choice have shaped policies aimed at this issue. She examines the views of key players, including legislators, women's organizations, religious groups, the media, and others. In a study that finds surprising ideological agreement among those with opposing views of surrogate motherhood, Markens challenges common assumptions about our responses to reproductive technologies and at the same time offers a fascinating picture of how reproductive politics shape social policy.
