Get Your Body Ready for the Marathon of Labor!

If you're newly pregnant, you're probably watching your diet carefully, getting plenty of rest, and preparing for the arrival of your new baby. You're also thinking about the big day itself and what the experience of labor will be like. Even if you're following a regular fitness program, you'll want to do everything you can to strengthen and prepare your body for the rigors of labor.

Maternal Fitness features clearly illustrated exercises that focus specifically on the muscle groups you'll use throughout labor, especially the transverse abdominals -- the stomach muscles that play a critical role during delivery. A powerful set of transverse abs can speed labor and delivery and make for a quick recovery. By learning how to strengthen your abdominals and relax your pelvic floor muscles, you'll be able to push more effectively.

While the Maternal Fitness program is designed specifically for the big moment, it also has other benefits, from minimizing backache and fatigue to giving you a welcome head start on getting back into shape after childbirth. Developed by a professional trainer who is also a registered nurse and childbirth educator, the Maternal Fitness program is safe for you and your baby and easy to do. Once learned, it can be incorporated into any workout.

This is one of the bibles of the OB/GYN resident. Excellent reference for the in-service exams. Simple diagrams & tables make this text readable and easy to understand.

Excellent reference! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This text offers a straight-forward reference to assist in the management of gyn problems I commonly encounter as a Family Doctor. It goes into great detail about anatomy and physiology of gynecologic problems yet is well-organized for use as a "quick reference". For example, it took less than a minute to find the section on hirsuitism to refresh my memory as to what the initial work-up should consist of.

Editorial Review:

This completely updated Sixth Edition reflects the growth of reproductive biology and medicine. While adhering to the style and relevance of the first edition, the editors set out to provide the latest information and research on reproductive physiology, contraception, infertility, and clinical endocrinology. Heavy emphasis is also placed on progestins and hormone administration and therapy within several chapters of the text. Comprehensive, relevant, and highly informative, this edition truly lends itself to the improvement of patient care in the field of clinical reproductive endocrinology.

Editorial Review:

Better Than I Ever Expected is a warm, witty, and honest book that contends with the challenges and celebrates the delights of older-life sexuality. It asserts that women over sixty are at the top of their game when it comes to enjoying sex.
Joan Price’s woman-to-woman straight talk transcends the self-help style of other books in this field. Yes, there are challenges to sex after menopause and beyond, says Price, but there are also creative solutions. She is on a mission to let women her age and older know that they can, in fact, have the best sex of their lives. Price gets personal and stays positive, combining her own story with candid comments, tips, and sassy tales from sexually seasoned women. She acknowledges the gritty issues that older women confront in their sexual lives, noting that it’s not easy, but it certainly isn’t over.
At age 61, Price is newly engaged to the man she’s been looking for her whole life. Her discovery of how great “well-seasoned” sex can be was the inspiration for this book. Sidebars present candid and friendly sex tips; fitness, exercise, and lifestyle information; and women's erotic vignettes—both real-life experiences and fantasies.

Excellent text-book for teaching gynecological surgery 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Outstanding and most complete description of most important subjects in relation with the teaching of gynecological surgery, ideal for medical students and residents. Specially important, there is a chapter on ethics and gynecological surgery.

The "Bible" for Gyn Surgery 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

There are at least two texts that are considered "the authority" for internal medicine. The same for Obstetrics.

For Gyn surgery there is only one, and this is it. Te Linde's is so far ahead of any competitors that all Gynecologists I know consider any other texts to be useful only as supplements to Te Linde's.

It is also written in an easy to follow style - not as dry as many medical texts, and it is exhaustively complete. It would be worth the price (for a Gyn Surgeon) if only for the portions dealing with hysterectomy and surgical treatment of cystocele and stress urinary incontinence.

Editorial Review:

The world's leading gynecologic surgery reference for 60 years, TeLinde's Operative Gynecology is now in its revised Tenth Edition. In this new edition, TeLinde's leads the field with bold initiative in its first attempt to synthesize the best way for surgical procedures. This classic text is rooted in the Johns Hopkins tradition of gynecologic surgery, but now includes 75 contributors, for a broader, more complete presentation of national and international practices. The book provides encyclopedic coverage of the etiology, diagnosis, and step-by-step surgical treatment of benign and malignant diseases and disorders of the female pelvis. More than 1,600 illustrations demonstrate the surgical techniques.

Good Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My mother recommended this book to me, as I expect my first child. Reading it I have been so surprised by the genuine, simple, respectful way that Dick-Read approaches his topic. So many of the books I have read on the topic of pregnancy, childbirth and nursing tell you what you NEED/MUST/HAVE to do, in very argumentative language. Not so with this one. Dick-Read speaks in beautiful language of the awe he feels in the delivery room, basing his advice not on absolutes or dogmatic tenets but on his extensive experience with laboring women, their emotional and physical state and what he has seen to be helpful to them. I find Childbirth Without Fear is a comforting read that helps me to understand and appreciate my state of life, to view it as natural and beautiful more than scary and terrifying.

Editorial Review:

In an age where birth has often been overtaken by obstetrics, Dr Dick-Read's philosophy is still as fresh as it was when he originally wrote this book. He unpicks every possible root cause of western woman's fear and anxiety in pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding and does so with overwhelming heart and empathy. Essential reading for all mothers-to-be!

Editorial Review:

The "hormone of desire," testosterone, acts on the brain to stimulate sexual interest, sensitivity to sexual stimulation, and orgasmic ability in both sexes. The amount of testosterone circulating in a woman's blood declines by about 50 percent between her twenties and fifties. The most common complaint associated with this decline is a seemingly unexplainable decrease or loss of sexual desire and enjoyment.

In I'm Not in the Mood, Dr. Reichman reveals the effectiveness of small doses of testosterone in reviving sexual desire and pleasure for women. Questions answered and topics discussed include:

  • Why and when do women make male hormones?

  • Where do all our male hormones go?

  • Behavior, life changes, and medical problems that affect our libido

  • Medications that affect our libido

  • Will creams, pills, lozenges, patches, or shots help?

  • When you should see a psychiatrist, psychologist, or sex therapist

  • How to discuss libido issues with your doctor

  • How to reach your biologic sexual potential

This is a great product. I received it promptly when our college bookstore was continually out of stock. It made the difference for me when I started my classes and had my materials, and other students did not. Great transaction.

Love IT! 5 out of 5 stars.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I would definitely recommend this book to maternity, L&D, postpartum nurses who like to get information from a hardbound reliable source. It has good, detailed information. Only downside, textbooks go out of date. So it's probably best as a tool for while you're in nursing school still.
