Editorial Review:

Getting older can be brutal—women gain weight, lose their sex drive, experience hot flashes, suffer memory loss, become short-tempered, find it difficult to sleep, and on and on. It’s not so easy for men, either—they start to lose energy and stamina as they age, too (and they have to live with women going through menopause). After years of being thin and fit and full of energy, Suzanne herself encountered the “Seven Dwarfs of Menopause”—Itchy, Bitchy, Sweaty, Sleepy, Bloated, Forgetful, and All-Dried-Up. Instead of living out the rest of her life cranky, sleep-deprived, and libido-less, Suzanne set out to discover how she could get her mind, body, and life back and banish those pesky dwarfs for good.

The result is The Sexy Years: Discover the Hormone Connection—The Secret to Fabulous Sex, Great Health, and Vitality, for Women and Men. In this passionately argued and enormously practical book, Suzanne supports her own research and experiences with the expertise of leading doctors in the field of women’s and men’s health and sexuality to create an inspiring, accessible call-to-arms to women to radically rethink how they approach life after fifty, and give them the tools to turn their lives around.

Suzanne has discovered that the second half of life has been more rewarding, fun, and purposeful than her younger years. The key to her happiness? Taking natural bioidentical hormones. Natural hormones, which mimic the hormones produced in our own bodies that are almost completely lost with aging, are the answer to the symptoms of menopause that plague women. Recent findings from the medical community show that synthetic hormone replacement therapy
(HRT) may be harmful to women—thus, thousands of women are looking for what else they can do to alleviate their symptoms. In The Sexy Years, Suzanne comes to the rescue with a step-by-step plan and detailed information about how women can take control of their health, for themselves and for their men, including:

• What the differences are between synthetic and bioidentical hormones, and why bioidentical hormones help women lose weight, reinvigorate their sex lives, and fight the symptoms of aging
• How doctors do not receive adequate training about hormones and are slaves to the pharmaceutical industry, and what questions every woman must ask her physician about hormone replacement therapy and her health
• How Suzanne turned her life around, with information about how often she visits her doctor, blood work, what hormones she takes, how to get these hormones, and more
• What male menopause, or andropause, is and how men can also take bioidentical hormones and regain the energy they had in their youth
• What a variety of specialists think about natural hormones, health, and sexuality—Suzanne shares the best advice from these doctors and provides a resource list of physicians and pharmacies

With bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, Suzanne has found the fountain of youth, the elixir that has made her feel thirty years old again. In combination with her Somersize diet and fitness plan, which she also writes about here, Suzanne has never felt better. The beauty of growing older, she maintains, is that you can combine the wisdom of age with the vitality of youth. Suzanne makes it perfectly clear how women and men can regain their zest for life at any age. These really are the sexy years!

Editorial Review:

Better Than I Ever Expected is a warm, witty, and honest book that contends with the challenges and celebrates the delights of older-life sexuality. It asserts that women over sixty are at the top of their game when it comes to enjoying sex.
Joan Price’s woman-to-woman straight talk transcends the self-help style of other books in this field. Yes, there are challenges to sex after menopause and beyond, says Price, but there are also creative solutions. She is on a mission to let women her age and older know that they can, in fact, have the best sex of their lives. Price gets personal and stays positive, combining her own story with candid comments, tips, and sassy tales from sexually seasoned women. She acknowledges the gritty issues that older women confront in their sexual lives, noting that it’s not easy, but it certainly isn’t over.
At age 61, Price is newly engaged to the man she’s been looking for her whole life. Her discovery of how great “well-seasoned” sex can be was the inspiration for this book. Sidebars present candid and friendly sex tips; fitness, exercise, and lifestyle information; and women's erotic vignettes—both real-life experiences and fantasies.

Chemical Bonding... 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The insight of how the range of hormones effects the F/M relationship was wonderful! Hormones is what makes love happen...It explains how these hormones control our thought, how we perform, and the part they play in our associations from birth on up. This book also gives information about Progesterone's and Estrogens and the use of these in Hormone Replacement Therapy. It helps you see and understand the actual chemical bonding which happens between F/M.

Chemical determinism is not enough 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 16 people found this review helpful.

The author of this book contributes interesting material on the important biochemicals (dopamine, estrogen, progesterone, LHRH, testosterone, prolactin, oxytocin, and others) that influence and help to regulate the universe we think of as "human sexuality." You will learn more than a few things. It seems that a working knowledge of high levels of testosterone can teach us quite a lot. (Women, proceed with caution!)

Unfortunately, she neglects other factors (and there are so many that make up human choices in love and sex: psychology, for example - and whether or not a couple has a single thing besides the kids to talk about after twenty-five years of marriage) that for me the information loses any authority it might have had.

In addition, she has an ax to subtly grind, and it is that men and women in their fifties (and older) have the very best chance for sexual compatability - for a set of specific chemical and biologically determined reasons. This information would seem to argue for couples staying together, but as we know, there are many other factors beyond sexual compatability (which is often fully present in couples who are literally coming apart - in every other way) that must contribute to couples' happiness - not to mention fidelity.

This book has interesting information about biochemicals' influence on our sex and love lives. You will doubtless recognize yourself and your mate in some of her descriptions, but as science it should be taken with a large grain of salt.

Editorial Review:

Written by a renowned sex therapist, "The Alchemy of Love and Lust" unmasks the hidden agendas of our hormones through the different sexual stages. Going beyond testosterone and estrogen, Dr. Crenshaw explores the potent influences of many different hormones and gives substance to the age-old idea of chemistry between the sexes, making for an enticing mix of romance and sex.

Editorial Review:

I mean-I like girls. I get on well with them. And I like sex. Not that I've had all that much experience of it-not with another person being in the room at the same time, anyway. I just can't somehow put the two together. I can be getting on really well with a girl but as soon as I get an inkling that there might be a chance of anything happening, I just freeze up. It's scary.

Everything you never wanted to know about sex and boys-but probably should

Dino, Jonathan, and Ben have got some problems, mostly with Jackie, Deborah, and Alison.
Dino's girlfriend Jackie, the most beautiful girl in school, drives him mad with lust, but won't go all the way and relieve Dino of his desperately unwanted virginity.

Jonathan likes Deborah. She's smart and funny and she makes him feel very sexy, but she's kind of plump and his mates won't let him hear the end of it.

Ben's been seduced by Alison, the pretty young drama teacher at school. And what seems like a dream come true is actually making him miserable.

Award-winning author Melvin Burgess has written a daringly honest and often hilarious account of contemporary teenage life, and the ups and downs that surround "doing it."

Editorial Review:

More doctors are recommending natural (also called bio-identical) hormones-because they offer all the advantages of synthetic hormone replacement therapy (HRT) without the negative side effects or long-term health risks. Unlike synthetic HRT, natural hormones are bio-identical: they match a woman's own hormones exactly and don't interfere with the body's normal hormone production. They are safer and more effective, providing protective benefits that range from alleviating unpleasant symptoms of menopause, perimenopause, and PMS to protecting against osteoporosis, endometrial cancer, and other diseases.

Topics covered include:

- What are natural hormones and how do they work?
- Why are natural hormones better and safer than synthetic HRT drugs?
- Do natural hormones increase the risk for breast cancer?
- Can natural hormones control midlife weight gain?
- Does natural progesterone help alleviate PMS?
- Will natural hormones improve skin?

I wish my mom had had this book to read when I was young! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I was referred to this book by my midwife (Debra O'Conner) as a book that I had to read as it's content was so "right on" and was she ever right. I know alot about my body. I am a licensed massage therapist and a mother of a 3 year old that I had at home. I spent hours and hours learning about my body during the childbirth process. That was great knowledge to add to the physiology I learned during my massage training. This book though, is something that every woman in our culture today should read. I now understand so much about my life and the directions it has taken! I hope to give this to everyone I know who has a daughter. I hope they will read it for themselves and then pass in on to their daughters when they feel the time is right. Our culture today is so lacking in this kind of positive message. It is women's reality and needs to be shared. Of course it is written by a Midwife! Thank you Elizabeth!

Editorial Review:

A woman's sexuality evolves dramatically during her life. In this book, Elizabeth Davis explores hormones and menstruation, pregnancy and birth, menopause and aging, fertility management through body awareness, and much more, for a complete picture. She analyzes controversial hormone replacement therapy and looks at what effect stress, overwork, major life events, relationship upheaval, and sexual abuse have on a woman's sexual health. The book features chapters on sexual awakening, sex in the later years, and up-to-date information on the creativity hormone, oxytocin. Readers will appreciate her warmth and her "rare combination of breadth, practicality, strong - though not rigid - opinion and generous respect for individual experience" (Publishers Weekly).

It's not me, it's my HORMONES!!! 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be a HUGE eye opener to the amazing way our bodies function in a primal order for a purpose which we have little control over. To actually learn about the chemical responses that make women want to nest after sex and men want to flee was fasinating. IT'S NOT PERSONAL, IT'S PRIMAL! It was humorus to discover that all the pyschology in the world isn't going to change basic biology. THIS is what sex education classes should be about.

Editorial Review:

A sex therapist shows how the body's hormones and chemicals exert a strong influence on choice of partners, sexual drive, and longevity of sexuality, and suggests ways to modulate them in order to produce more vigorous and satisfying sexual intercourse.

Interesting 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book provides a non-technical overview of the role that sex hormones play in aging. The title led me to think that the book would address the entire field of aging; however, it mostly focuses on the relation of sex hormones to aging. The first five chapters actually do summarize the general subject of the science of aging, but the information contained in these chapters is covered in more detail in other books (see Steven Austads 1997 book, for instance). However, starting with chapter 6, Gosden hones his focus more specifically on the sex hormones and how they affect aging. He presents the story of the discovery of the sex hormones, starting with investigations by Brown-Séquard in 1889. In the remaining chapters, Gosden interweaves the history of sex hormones with recent discoveries about how they affect aging. The book is written for general audiences, so there are no in-text citations, although Gosden provides a chapter-by-chapter list of suggested readings at the end.

Editorial Review:

The quest to prolong our youth has spurred numerous quack remedies and fraudulent claims. It has also inspired serious research efforts, where new technologies and crossdisciplinary investigations are starting to pry loose the secrets of the aging process. Researchers have recently announced that people may soon be able to live to be 150, or more.

In Cheating Time, acclaimed researcher Roger Gosden tells us what scientists have learned so far, particularly about the role of hormones in aging. Focusing on the link (and possible tradeoffs) between longevity and reproductive capacity, Gosden combines fascinating theories and findings with engaging anecdotes of life on the frontlines of this compelling area of scientific inquiry. He offers good reasons to be optimistic. While no one is patenting eternal youth just yet, science has made astonishing gains in understanding how we can live longer lives in better health. 12 illustrations.
