Editorial Review:

When Gray's Anatomy appeared in 1858, contemporaries immediately recognized that it was a departure from anything that had come before. Sales were brisk, and the book rapidly became not just a bestseller, but the standard work. Created by two young men in only two years in the mid-nineteenth century, Gray's Anatomy is the only textbook of human anatomy continuously in print for the last 150 years.
Commemorating this remarkable anniversary, The Making of Mr. Gray's Anatomy tells the fascinating story of the origin of this groundbreaking book. Providing a wealth of historical context, Dr. Ruth Richardson examines both the mid-Victorian medical world in which Henry Gray and the brilliant illustrator Henry Vandyke Carter operated and the vigorous publishing industry in London at that time. Along the way, Richardson explores the scientific and cultural life of the medical school dissecting room and dead house, as well as the lives of those whose corpses ended up on the slab. The very different personalities and life-stories of Gray and Carter emerge in the telling, as do those of their publishers, and the many other individuals who were involved in the making of the book itself. Indeed, The Making of Mr. Gray's Anatomy investigates the entire production process--from the book's conception in 1855 to its reception by the medical press in 1858-via typesetters, wood-engravers, steam printers, paper and printing-ink suppliers, paper-folders, stitchers and bookbinders. Here we encounter individuals motivated by money, vanity, altruism, scientific discovery, professional pride, and the quest for faith and fame.
Vividly written and painstakingly researched, The Making of Mr. Gray's Anatomy illuminates a vibrant human document, one that has guided medical students for a century and a half.

Five stars for Devies' book 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Devries did an excellent work in presenting medical research on heart disease and cholesterol in an easy read fashion for the lay person. The manner in which Dr. Devries writes makes heart disease and cholesterol a "a no brainer" to understand is superb. Dr.Devries has been my health coach for the past 4 years. His understanding of the subject has made the world of difference in my understanding my own health. Through his methods, my blood pressure and cholesterol levels are closely monitored and controlled. I am very grateful for his medical care and expertise which is now offered to the world through this book.

Editorial Review:

Heart disease is largely preventable, but conventional cholesterol management is often inadequate. According to university cardiologist and leading prevention specialist Dr. Stephen R. Devries, avoiding heart disease requires a far more comprehensive approach that balances new high tech testing with low tech treatments. Now, in WHAT YOUR DOCTOR MAY NOT TELL YOU ABOUT CHOLESTEROL, Dr. Devries combines natural treatments with the latest scientific
advances. New types of cholesterol tests are highlighted that go far beyond routine testing to identify hidden risks. Expanding the traditional medical model, Dr. Devries illustrates the role of mind/body interventions, lifestyle, supplements, vitamins, and conservative use of medication for optimal prevention.

Military Slang...... 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

i am not done with this book yet, it is very informative and emotional, however not an easy read due to all the military slang and abbreviations....

Interesting reading, but could be more about Iraq and less about the author 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The book contains interesting stories from Iraq battlefields, and it gave me good insight about the work of a military surgeon.

However, the Iraq part is only about 40% of the book, and much of the book consists of personal memories from past life in the U.S., which, frankly, aren't exactly what you would expect from the book (given its title and short description).

Navy-Marine Medical Intervention in Iraq 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This war time experience is over-laden with military explanations of Navy and Marine protocol. Although Dr Jadik aptly describes his feelings of inadequacy, at times, he is quite verbose in his descriptions of military scenes.
I didn't really feel as though there was as much medic-patient relationships that I was expecting.
For me, there was too much "military" and not enough inter-personal action.

Editorial Review:

Cdr. Richard Jadick's story is one of the most extraordinary to come out of the war in Iraq. This riveting memoir from the Navy doctor earned him praise as "Hero, M.D." on the cover of "Newsweek." Unabridged. 7 CDs.

Stop Dreaming Small 5 out of 5 stars.

One of the greatest stories I have ever read. It is a true reflection of one who leads by example in what he says. The author's recognition of the importance of reading and a refusal to dwell on the negatives is a true understanding of what it takes to maximize one's potential. His recognition of God is also significant in the fulfillment of one's purpose. The author is in agreement with the author of Breaking Free: The Key to Empowerment, Happiness & Fulfillmentin his understanding of the power of the mind and positive thinking. This book is a must read for all persons from the moment they can read!

Editorial Review:

After telling the story of how he overcame an inner-city background to become a world renowned neurosurgeon (Gifted Hands), Dr. Ben Carson now gives an inspirational look at the philosophy of life that helped him meet life's obstacles and leap over them.

Step-by-step research overview 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I'm extremly glad I've read this book before attending medical school. The author provides a textbook quality overview of the enteric nervous system in so many pages without boring or confusing the reader in the slightest bit. I loved this book and wish there were more neurobiologist authors out there like him.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Michael Gershon has devoted his career to understanding the human bowel (the stomach, esophagus, small intestine, and colon). His thirty years of research have led to an extraordinary rediscovery: nerve cells in the gut that act as a brain. This "second brain" can control our gut all by itself. Our two brains -- the one in our head and the one in our bowel -- must cooperate. If they do not, then there is chaos in the gut and misery in the head -- everything from "butterflies" to cramps, from diarrhea to constipation. Dr. Gershon's work has led to radical new understandings about a wide range of gastrointestinal problems including gastroenteritis, nervous stomach, and irritable bowel syndrome. The Second Brain represents a quantum leap in medical knowledge and is already benefiting patients whose symptoms were previously dismissed as neurotic or "it's all in your head."

From a pharmacist 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Another great expose of the greed-based "healthcare " system. I recall back in the 80's when insurance first began to cover prescriptions for $1 copay (back then). The customer would always ask "how much would this cost without insurance?". I would reply about fifty dollars. His eyes would light up like silver dollars. He would be back in a week with a fistful of prescriptions. When previously he would come in maybe once or twice a year he was now coming in every week, getting sicker and sicker. It was only a matter of time before the copays went up to cover the rapidly growing number of prescriptions. The pharmacist became an insurance clerk trying to explain the copay system to disgruntled customers who could no longer get something for nothing.

Editorial Review:

Using the examples of Vioxx, Celebrex, cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, and anti-depressants, Overdosed America shows that at the heart of the current crisis in American medicine lies the commercialization of medical knowledge itself.

Drawing on his background in statistics, epidemiology, and health policy, John Abramson, M.D., reveals the ways in which the drug companies have misrepresented statistical evidence, misled doctors, and compromised our health. The good news is that the best scientific evidence shows that reclaiming responsibility for your own health is often far more effective than taking the latest blockbuster drug.

You—and your doctor—will be stunned by this unflinching exposé of American medicine.

Historical foundation 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone wanting a historical perspective of the development of psychoanalytic theory. This book takes you through different offsprings of psychoanalysis beginning with Freud's contribution. It also offers a comparison of each new theory with classic Freudian psychoanalytic thought so you have an idea of which aspects were further developed and which ones were "trashed." It's a good foundational book for anyone beginning an interest in psychoanalysis.

Editorial Review:

Freud’s concepts have become a part of our psychological vocabulary: unconscious thoughts and feelings, conflict, the meaning of dreams, the sensuality of childhood. But psychoanalytic thinking has undergone an enormous expansion and transformation over the past fifty years. With Freud and Beyond, Stephen A. Mitchell and Margaret J. Black make contemporary psychoanalytic thinking—the body of work that has been done since Freud—available for the first time. Richly illustrated with case examples, this lively, jargon-free introduction makes modern psychoanalytic thought accessible at last.

I had seen this book at a friends business and thought it was good. Since I have ordered and received it I have had the chance to really review the contents and find it one book that I can use daily. The CD rom is also fantastic in the number of recipes it contains. One nice feature is that you can size the recipes to what you need. Another great plus. Well worth the money. Tom Elliott, CEC

I had to buy this book for my Quantity Foods course as a part of my Dietetics major. I actually liked the book, and I am going to keep it for later use. I thought the book was organized very well. Some of the charts in Chapter 2 and 5 that we used quite often were a little hard to find (because there are so many!).
It also presented a good overview of things you wouldn't think would be in the book, such as the school lunch program, etc.
I liked it!

Editorial Review:

In 1917, after years of selling worthless patent remedies throughout the Southeast, John R. Brinkley–America’s most brazen young con man–arrived in the tiny town of Milford, Kansas. He set up a medical practice and introduced an outlandish surgical method using goat glands to restore the fading virility of local farmers.

It was all nonsense, of course, but thousands of paying customers quickly turned “Dr.” Brinkley into America’s richest and most famous surgeon. His notoriety captured the attention of the great quackbuster Morris Fishbein, who vowed to put the country’s “most daring and dangerous” charlatan out of business.

Their cat-and-mouse game lasted throughout the 1920s and ’30s, but despite Fishbein’s efforts Brinkley prospered wildly. When he ran for governor of Kansas, he invented campaigning techniques still used in modern politics. Thumbing his nose at American regulators, he built the world’s most powerful radio transmitter just across the Rio Grande to offer sundry cures, and killed or maimed patients by the score, yet his warped genius produced innovations in broadcasting that endure to this day. By introducing country music and blues to the nation, Brinkley also became a seminal force in rock ’n’ roll. In short, he is the most creative criminal this country has ever produced.

Culminating in a decisive courtroom confrontation that pit Brinkley against his nemesis Fishbein, Charlatan is a marvelous portrait of a boundlessly audacious rogue on the loose in an America that was ripe for the bamboozling.
