The best all-around book for residents and practitioners. 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I used the third edition of this book for my writtens and orals. I am fellowed in cardiothoracic anesthesia, and boarded in pain medicine. It is more than comprehensive enough for everday practice, and it is more than enough to get you through the written boards, and will certainly help with the orals. Miller, Barash (is there an etc to these two choices?) are much more comprehensive, but they are highly dependent upon the writers of each chapter: while some are great reading, others ramble on incessantly about studies which show effects on giant squid axons, or how 3-74% of rats will react when their tails are clamped. And who can forget the effects of isoflurane on the livers of salamanders? Morgan-Mikhail is put together logically, it is highly readable, and it is extremely affordable, and while it won't give you every answer, it's a good start.

Editorial Review:

Clinical Anesthesiology integrates succinct coverage of basic principles and clinical considerations in the anesthetic management of patients. It features up-to-date discussion of all relevant areas within anesthesiology, including equipment, pharmacology, regional anesthesia, pathophysiology, pain management, anesthetic management, and critical care. Extensive use of case discussions, figures, and tables in each chapter promotes application of the concepts to practice.

skimpy on strategy 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I'm taking an MCAT course this summer b/c I'm taking the MCAT and DAT. I'm studying science through my MCAT course, so I bought this book for PAT, math, and reading comp review. I also bought Barron's. Compared to Barron's the PAT and reading comp section are VERY skimpy. In Kaplan, the PAT questions seem too easy and they barely offer any tips on how to tackle them. I didn't have a strong grasp on PAT after reading it. The reading comp section is merely a practice reading comp test (how am I supposed to do well on it if they don't offer any strategy beforehand?). Barron's has a very comprehensive PAT section, which I highly recommend, and the reading section at least has some advice. I haven't taken a good look at the science sections yet, but Kaplan seems stronger in science than Barron's and it definitely has a bigger math section.

The main reason why I bought Kaplan is because it has a practice computer test, which is crucial for getting used to computer-based testing, and it's the most updated DAT study material available. I will also be purchasing the TopScore tests, which also just came out with a 2008 version for extra practice. In a nutshell, I wouldn't study for the DAT from the Kaplan book alone, but it seems like a good study guide overall.

Editorial Review:

  • Features:

*New! Vivid, color charts and diagrams throughout to make learning more memorable

*Updated! More of the DAT tips and concepts that you need to know right now

*2 full-length practice tests, with detailed explanations for every answer

    *Intensive science and quantitative review

    *Reading Comprehension practice test

*Effective strategies to maximize your score

*Exclusive and realistic exercises created especially for the Perceptual Ability Test

Great help for clinicals!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a little gem for quick clinical review! Very helpful when you need your mind refreshed on a topic. Highly recommend for anesthesia providers!!

Not to beat a dead horse, but ... 2 out of 5 stars.

I have to echo everyone's sentiments here. The content is concise and would be an excellent quick-reference guide. One of the oral/maxillofacial surgery residents rotating through anesthesia absolutely swore by it, and I can see how it could serve as a critical quick-and-dirty reference. However, the fact that the book self-destructs with minimal (gentle) use makes it essentially USELESS.

Great Resorce --Poor Binding 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have owned every edition of the book since 1996, and have always found it to be very usefull in the clinical area. I ordered the 2008 edition in July. When it arrivved I flipped through it and pages started coming loose from the binding. Thinking it was just a fluke, I ordered a second copy. When it arrived the binding seemed to be better, but when I started adding a few of my own notes to the margins, the binding again fell apart. I contacted both the publisher and Amazon.com to let them know what happened and to see if I could get a copy of the handbook with a reliable binding...to date I have nothing back from Amazon or the publisher. The poor quality of the binding has turned an outstanding reference into useless trash. Every other edition of this handbook that I own has been well used and dog eared, but I have never lost a single page from these editions. If I were the author, I would start looking for a new publisher.

Editorial Review:

This handbook is a current manual of Anesthesiology care, including many useful reference tables and charts. Anesthesiology is very popular with medical students, residents, and anesthesiologists. New information on pain management makes this book essential reading

The 3rd edition of this popular resource is an invaluable study tool for certification and recertification as well as a superb way to ensure mastery of all of the key knowledge in anesthesiology. Nearly 1,000 review questions cover everything from the basic sciences to general anesthesia and subspecialty considerations, with an emphasis on the most important and clinically relevant principles. All of the questions have been pre-tested on residents at the Mayo Clinic to ensure that they are comparable in difficulty and content to those encountered when taking the boards. For every question, readers will not only find the correct answer and an explanation, but also page references to major anesthesia texts-making it easy to find more information on any subject.

  • Offers completely updated questions and references throughout-reflecting the latest discoveries and techniques in physics, biochemistry, and anesthesia equipment · the newest drugs and drug categories · and the most recent information on respiratory physiology and critical care; pediatric physiology and anesthesia; anatomy, regional anesthesia, and pain management; cardiovascular physiology and anesthesia; and more!
  • Includes coverage of new pain management drugs such as Cox-2 inhibitors, gabapentin (Neurontin), tramadol, capsaicin, and additives to spinal anesthetics, plus new drugs used in cardiac anesthesia and critical care medicine, including fenoldopam, ibutilide, dopexamine, and dexmedetomidine.
  • Presents entirely new questions regarding side effects and complications of regional anesthesia · recognition and treatment of dysthymias · anesthetic implications of non-anesthetic drugs · perioperative management of cerebral perfusion pressure, serum glucose concentration, temperature, corticosteroids, and intervenous fluids · outpatient anesthesia and treatment of nausea and vomiting · complications of anesthetic drugs · and many other essential topics.

an overly comprehensive review 4 out of 5 stars.
21 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I do agree that this textbook is a very well-done, well written book with a lot of value for anesthesiologists. However, as a tool for oral board study it is actually a bit too comprehensive and inclusive. Take my word for it, during your oral board exam you are not going to be asked about histologic changes in the bronchial mucosa of the asthmatic or the synthetic pathway of catecholamines. The person studying for the oral anesthesiology board doesn't have time to waste learning material that he or she doesn't need to know. I recommend instead Clinical Cases in Anesthesia by Reed. Same format, much more focused on the material that the anesthesiologist must know for the oral exam.

Editorial Review:

Now in its Sixth Edition, this best-selling text is the only anesthesiology book with a case-based, problem-oriented approach. It is widely used to study for the American Board of Anesthesiology's oral exams and as a refresher for practicing anesthesiologists and CRNAs. Chapters cover 62 surgical procedures and problems in all major areas of anesthesiology. Each chapter presents a case and asks questions about preoperative evaluation, patient preparation, intraoperative management, and postoperative care. Questions are followed by thorough explanations and references. This edition has a broadly based authorship, with two new Associate Editors and one-third new contributors. New chapters cover postoperative pain management and electroconvulsive therapy.

A Barash Follower 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

In Anesthesiology they say you are either a "Barash Person" or a "Miller Person." It is my personal opinion that Barash does probably the best job at providing content that is relevant and devoid of minutia. All sections contain material that is optimal for reading and assimilation. The text is large, yet it is far from dry. I highly recommend this as "The" backbone text for Anesthesiology!

Editorial Review:

More than 100 leading experts cover every aspect of contemporary perioperative medicine in one comprehensive, clinically focused, clear, concise, and accessible volume. Fantastic for all specialties 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is one of those books that can be appreciated by almost every clinician. Dr. Faust has done a fantastic job of applying basic science principals to practice. After being away from the classrooms of medical school for awhile, one tends to become myopic and reliant upon specialty-specific pricipals. This book book helps dust off those cryptic vaults within the cerebrum and can really get the acetylcholine flowing.

If you want a good review of all topics related to anesthesia, then this is it. The chapters being short, sweet but in depth, make for a quick but knowledge gaining read. Good book for the library of Anesthesia Assistants.

Editorial Review:

This is the New Edition of the world's best-selling review book on anesthesiology, combining comprehensive coverage of essential knowledge with an easy-to-use format. Its in-depth, yet succinct discussions cover all topic areas found on the ABA/ASA exam and make it the ideal way for readers to master the information they need to know.
