THAT'S MY FATHER!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 25 people found this review helpful.

I first read the book when I was four. I am now, at the age of ninteen, a fully qualified obstrician/gynecologist, all because of this book. I have now, of course, read this several times, but it is still like reading it for the first time. As the title implies, my father is David Olive, the editor of this book. I fully recommend this book to anyone who is remotely interested in a profession as a gynecologist.

Editorial Review:

The gold standard text in gynecology is in its Fourteenth Edition, thoroughly revised and updated and now in full color throughout. Organized into eight sections, this comprehensive and general gynecological textbook provides guidance for the management of specific gynecological conditions. The first two sections cover principles of practice and initial assessment and the relevant basic science. The third section is on preventive and primary care for women, and the remaining five sections are directed at methods of diagnosis and management in general gynecology, operative general gynecology, urogynecology and pelvic reconstructive surgery, reproductive endocrinology, and gynecologic oncology.

9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Now in a thoroughly updated and expanded fifth edition, Chronic Illness: Impact And Interventions is a study text especially intended for upper level undergraduate and graduate students in nursing, social work, and rehabilitation, but the information it offers is useful to all family members and survivors dealing with the psychological, ethical, organizational, and financial difficulties of ongoing illness. The collaborative effort of Ilene Morof Lubkin (Professor Emeritus, California State University - Hayward) and Pamala D. Larsen (Interim Director, School of Nursing College of Health and Human Services, University of North Carolina at Charlotte), Chronic Illness offers students new chapters on home care, long term care, and the role of the advanced practice nurse. An up-to-date, serious, and effective overview and study of this significant health issue, Chronic Illness is strongly recommended addition to Medical School library reference collections and Nursing Studies supplemental reading lists.

Editorial Review:

The third edition of this popular text continues to focus on the many factors and issues that influence clients and families dealing with chronic conditions. Chronic Illness, Third Edition shows how these individuals cope not only with disease, but with managing their lives on a day-to-day basis, from sociological, psychosocial, ethical, organizational, and financial perspectives.

Evidence based medicine at it's best! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 11 people found this review helpful.

If you care about your health, or that of those around you, this is a must read book.

This certainly isn't a book you can simply skim read. It took me a while to ponder about the impact this might have (I'm a medical student). The arguments are very well presented; he puts all the studies in front of you and analyzes them in a relevant manner.

What I consider to be a minor flaw in the book: the author sometimes concludes that certain differences in mortality are "negligible" when I don't think they are negligible. Certainly though, improvements in mortality rate are far easily attainable via fish oil, magnesium and other quality supplements.

I would love to see a new version of this book, further exploring and digging through the literature on various drugs and supplements.

Editorial Review:

A fearless exposé of mainstream medicine’s most revered dogma, Malignant Medical Myths is solidly based on trusted medical and nutritional books and journals. Americans spend $2 trillion per year on health care, about $7,000 each, yet it buys almost the poorest healthcare among developed countries, with 200,000 deaths per year from medical treatment. Find out why advice from authorities on screening tests, drugs, diet, exercise, alcohol, radiation, radon, and water fluoridation is often wrong and commercially motivated. See how clinical trials are slanted. Understand how “sickness” is created to sell treatments, and which government agencies support these shenanigans.

Editorial Review:

Throughout Europe, Patrick Casement's work on the interactional aspects of the therapeutic process is well known and highly acclaimed. In Casement's lucid treatise, LEARNING FROM THE PATIENT, everything in psychoanalytic theory and technique is up for questioning and for careful testing in the clinical setting; every concept used is explained and illustrated with clinical examples. The author offers an unusual openness about what really happens in the consulting room, including mistakes--his own as well as others'. The patient's unconscious contribution to analytic work is fully illustrated. As a result of this approach, insight is arrived at with a rare freshness as theory is rediscovered in the consulting room.

In the course of this volume, Casement develops some familiar concepts and evolves a number that are new, such as: internal supervision, a process in which the analyst/therapist explores the implications of various options during each session with the patient; trial identification with the patient, which encourages analysts and therapists to look at themselves as a patient might see them; and communication by impact, a graphic way of considering the various dimensions of projective identification. Others include the dynamics of containment, the communication of hurt, the pain of contrast, and unconscious hope.

In Part I, Casement lays the foundation by establishing the first principles of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapy, as well as those for the process of learning from the patient. In Part II, he more fully explores what emerges from this way of working. He discusses the importance of the analytic space and the need to keep it and the analytic process free from interference of any kind, including that of working style or theoretical bias. He makes a strong case for viewing the analytic process as an expression of the unconscious search for what previously was delayed and is now needed for healthy growth and recovery.

Highly accessible, honest, and most of all helpful, this book offers profound insights and is a joy to read. It has much to offer all levels of readership--from students to experienced practitioners--in the disciplines of analysis, psychotherapy, child therapy, clinical psychology, counseling, and social work. It is therefore of interest for anyone in the helping professions and all those concerned with the dynamics of human relationships.

A good text for allied health and nursing students. 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent introduction to health care ethics. Covers theory and principles and ethical decision-making in the first several chapters and the major issues in health care in the remaining chapters. The writers don't bog down in discussing these issues as do some current texts in bioethics. Very readable. Does not have cases so if one uses this for instruction a book with a collection of cases is needed (i.e. Cases Studies in Allied Health Ethics by Veatch and Flack).

Editorial Review:

This book introduces the basic principles and language of the ethics of health care and is suitable for anyone involved in the health care industry. The book provides a balanced background in value development and ethical theories and includes real-life controversies encountered by professionals. Exercises are provided at the end of each chapter to enable readers to explore the theoretical positions introduced in the book and to practice their decision-making skills.

All in all, not quite the info I expected. Not much info on dosages or otc treatments which is what I was looking for...Not really worth it in my opinion but still looking for a concise pediatric reference if anyone has any suggestions.

Essential for the house officer 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

SERIES COPY:The Adolescent Mental Health Initiative series addresses some of the major mental health issues facing teenagers today--eating disorders, anxiety disorders, depression, and schizophrenia. Of the books planned for the series, the first four, including the two presented here, focus on how parents and other adults, including teachers, coaches, guidance counselors, and even pediatricians, can help afflicted teens overcome the disrupting and often devastating challenges of these disorders. Each book is an authoritative guide that offers essential information such as how to go about getting a diagnosis, what the latest treatment options and prevention strategies are, how to help teens cope with mental illness at home and at school and, perhaps most importantly, what the warning signs and red flags are that parents and other adults should look out for in teenagers who may be at risk for these diseases. Combining the expertise of leading psychiatrists and psychologists with the experience of everyday people who have faced these disorders in their own children, the books are designed to help adults deal effectively with adolescent mental illness and to empower them to act immediately and wisely in getting teens the best available treatment possible.
Growing up can be stressful for any teenager, but it is considerably harder for the many adolescents who develop an anxiety disorder. This book is an essential guide for parents, teachers, or other adults involved with teenagers who may be affected by these disorders. By bringing together two strands of expertise-that of mental health professionals and of parents who have lived through the experience of their own teenager's mental illness--If Your Adolescent Has an Anxiety Disorder provides adult readers with the clinical information and practical advice they need to understand and help the teen. There are chapters detailing four of the different types of anxiety disorders, including social anxiety, generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and post-traumatic stress disorders. Each includes a clearly written definition, a discussion of factors that can contribute to developing the disorder, treatment information, and case studies based on a real family's own experience with the disease. Tips and quotes from parents are sprinkled liberally throughout the text, and helpful sidebars provide more detailed information. The authors also provide a chapter fully dedicated to discussing treatment options, including what role parents play in treatment, how to juggle treatment and school, and how to handle insurance and managed care issues
Knowing the right information about anxiety disorders is the first step towards helping adolescents who are dealing with them grow to become healthy, happy adults
