great source 5 out of 5 stars.

The Merck Manual is a great source of Western medical information. To complement this, I use the Yale doctor's book, AN ELEMENTARY TEXTBOOK OF AYURVEDA by Frank John Ninivaggi, M.D. of Yale University Medical School. Both give practical information about how to stay well and treat medical and psychological problems.

Great Reference Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is great for looking up any diagnosis in a patient chart. There has only been 1.. yes ONE that was not in the book.... VERY informative.... gives suggestions as what to do with the diagnosis and what can cause it, etc. I LOVE this book, it quickly became my GO TO book for anything and EVERYTHING!!!

I read most if not all of the reviews after clicking product reviews for the January 2008 version. Is there no product review of this January 2008 version or does it contain the same informatiion as the 2006 version?

Not good for the shelf 2 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I used this book extensively for the Family Medicine Shelf--and that was a bad idea. It's very basic and covers good cases that family medicine people might see on a daily basis, but for the shelf, this book is not even close to being enough. The Family Medicine shelf is an Internal Medicine test, essentially, so using this book did not help for it at all. Use 1st AID for Medicine or 1st Aid for the Step One (yes, that's right) for the Family Shelf and you will be fine (even if Family is your first rotation). This book is not good for the family medicine clerkship shelf!

Great Review Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

Very comprehensive review book for the boards. Lots of good hints and facts without being overwhelming. I especially liked the Derm chapter, quite trenchant.

Recommended review book 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a great review book before the examination. It has lots of facts to digest and is well organized in topics and questions. This is a good review book for family practice certification or recertification examinations.

Good review of material but no practice questions in the book 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

When I first saw the book, I was under the impression it had some practice questions to go along with the material. This is not true. There are no questions in the book and the information is provided in different chapters and arranged almost in an outline form with many charts to supplement the material. I do think it is important to do some study questions as preparation for the test but given that this is not the purpose of this book, I find it hard to fault it for the lack of questions.

As far as the information is presented - it's actually pretty well done. It casts a wide enough web to hit the major topics and presents it in a way that makes it so you don't snooze off as if you're reading a textbook. Don't let the outline form fool you - there's a LOT of information in this book. It misses some of the random esoteric questions that the family medicine board exam has but it gives a pretty good framework for the stuff you should know.

For those of you that are taking the Family Medicine Boards, definitely do the practice questions on the website. They say that none of the questions will be in the actual exam but I found that a lot of the same information on the practice questions is on the actual test.

As Good As Everyone Else Says It Is 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is a bargain at the price. Best book on procedures I have seen.
Has informed consent and post-procedure care forms for almost every procedure as well. The one drawback is the paper is very flimsy and likely will eventually tear because you will use this book a LOT. I would have paid more for heavier paper stock.

Buy this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the only reference you will need for doing office-based primary care procedures. I've been using it for years and highly recommend it to all of the family medicine residents I teach in our residency program.

  • Pocketbook

  • A copy of the Pfenninger and Fowler's Procedures for Primary Care 2E.

Carpal Navicular = Scaphoid 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I can understand why Sonia said what she did, as I have seen "scaphoid" used more often. However, "navicular" is not wrong. Per Gray's Anatomy etc., this most commonly fractured wrist bone is indeed sometimes referred to as "navicular" or "carpal navicular" in the literature. I do not understand why she feels the book is "riddled with errors". If so, I'd like them pointed out or be referred to errata for it. It's a thorough, highly educational but portable resource.

Editorial Review:

...classic and elegant, deserves a place in the library of every medical student and physician - JAMA review of prior edition

No other resource gives the student or practitioner a better introduction to the art, science, and craft of the physical examination than this classic work. Featuring an improved, user-friendly design, the text reviews symptoms, signs, and laboratory findings of disease. It demonstrates techniques of history taking, performing the physical examination, constructing a differential diagnosis and making the final diagnosis. It shows how to record findings and present them orally. New appendices cover guidelines for special examinations including: women, adolescents, preemployment, geriatric, and disability.
