It's seldom a good sign when a content provider chooses to repurpose existing material instead of developing NEW material, but this is what we seem to have with the Merck Manual of Patient Symptoms. The book proudly boasts that it "enables users to quickly find information they need to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients," which only raises the question of what all the OTHER versions of the Merck Manual are supposed to do. To be fair, the long-in-the-tooth, resting-on-its-laurels Merck Manuals are probably in NEED of a makeover--but this ain't it. What we're left with is a book Short on innovation and quality that is likely to take the fast Lane to the bargain bins at your local bookstore.

The standard for teaching EBM 5 out of 5 stars.

As a physician-teacher of EBM to internal medicine residents, this is the best book I've run across for this purpose. We utilize the reader's guides, first published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal and later in JAMA, written by Guyatt, Sackett, and others, which are perfectly complemented by this volume. I recommend it to all of the residents and have purchased multiple copies for house staff use (although I can't seem to keep them on the shelf...) It makes learning EBM fun and highlights its usefulness and, most importantly for busy physicians, speed. Worth reading for every physician interested in practicing medicine based on only the best evidence.

This is an excellent "how to" manual for those who are serious about learning how to apply evidence based medicine principles. Lots of folks talk about "evidence based medicine" but few really know what it means. This is obviously intended as a teaching tool for residents but is equally useful for any physician who is interested in learning the principles required to do the best job for his/her patient. The size and summary cards are handy for carrying with you wherever you may need them! Easy to read but with great substance.

There is perhaps no medical specialty that has more misconceptions, "wives tales" and variation than Obstetrics. Williams Obstetrics is more exhaustively comprehensive than any other text for general Obstetrics. Williams has long prided itself on presenting "evidence-based medicine" - separating the wives tales from medical knowledge obtained from published studies from peer-reviewed journals. Perhaps there are those who prefer their Obstetrics with a little voodoo. For those who want to know the most up-to-date scientifically based Obstetrics, Williams is your book!

I had this book among several others while working in rural Uganda. I quickly forgot the other texts and had this stuffed in my back pocket on the wards and going for housecalls. I'm an internist, so when a measles outbreak started I really appreciated the great section on managing this disease. This text contains the essentials for all aspects of medicine in tropical, resource-poor settings as well as great nutritional information. I will bring this book whenever when workng abroad.

The Oxford Handbook of Tropical Medicine provides clear and concise coverage of this area of medicine for students and practitioners in the tropics. Medical conditions are ordered by system except for the five major tropical conditions - malaria, HIV/STDs, tuberculosis, diarrhoeal diseases, and acute respiratory infections and fevers. The book has been designed to be as practical as possible with illustrations of blood films and stool smears, which are useful for diagnosis, as well as the usual clinical features, diagnosis, and management. The new edition includes a major revision to the cardiology, chest medicine, renal, and endocrinology sections and there is new material on mental health, managing acute medical emergencies and ophthalmology.

This text is the required book for my Family Medicine program. While I have never been a fan of dense books, I can honestly state that this is the most cumbersome book I have read for medical school. It is dense, flows poorly, and the advise within chapters is very often contradictory.

The absolute worse feature of the book is it is very light in clinical material. It sites empirical and evidence based medicine ad nauseum, but when it mentioned a maneuver it almost never explains how it is performed, when a differential supports the use of the maneuver, and what would be a positive sign. I found this very frustrating because I needed another book to read this book!

This book lacks the most basic insights that should be gained after a Family Medicine rotation. After reading the URI chapter it offers very little practical advise for separating bacterial vs. viral infections.

The book is a great collection of guidelines and recommendations that you can share with your patients, but does not teach what you need to know to learn or practice Family Medicine. This book should be titled "Lagniappe of Family Medicine"

I used the first edition of this book while working in a busy urgent care center. As a point of care reference, it is a true godsend. The information is based on the authors' real-world experience and presented in a straight forward manner. The reader is not overwhelmed with detail. The clear, informative illustrations greatly enhanced the utility of this text. As a student rotating through the ED, on more than one occasion I impressed my clinical instructors with knowledge gained through this book.

This famous text is much beloved by medical students and physicians-in-training throughout the English-speaking world, as its many editions indicate. Despite its relatively narrow focus, it is chock full of the pearls of clinical wisdom that students and practitioners treasure, and many of these lessons apply to medicine in general. The book was well characterized by a reviewer of an earlier edition for The New England Journal of Medicine: "If only one book about surgery could be made available to physicians from all specialties, it should probably be Silen's recent revision of Cope's Early Diagnosis of the Acute Abdomen. Since the book first appeared more than 30 years ago, it has remained the classic treatise on the initial approach to abdominal pain." Because acute, severe abdominal pain is still a common problem whose misdiagnosis can result in quick death, each generation of beginning physicians is faced with the urgency of learning to make a diagnosis in this high anxiety situation and they appreciate the wise, humane, precisely detailed guidance offered by Cope and Silen. For the 21st Edition, Dr. Silen has again updated the text in a respectful but significant way. He has strengthened its emphasis on pitfalls in the interpretation of CT and ultrasound scans, on misadventures caused by over-reliance on blood tests and radiographs, and on careful history-taking to avoid the costs of inappropriate lab tests.
