This is an excellent book. I have a Master's degree in Special Education and have worked in my field for some time. I have heard many professionals talk about ADHD. I thought I knew something.....until I read this book. As a parent of a child with ADHD, this book is a must have. You will learn how your child's brain is functioning as well as correct parenting styles for you to help your child succeed and have a happier home life.

Great read for Father's AND Mother's to be 5 out of 5 stars.

This book put into perspective the role of the husband/partner and how important that role is during the birth process. When we found out we were expecting our first baby my husband just thought I'd be doing all the work and he'd just be there in case I needed him but that I'd probably need the midwives more. After a Bradley Method Instructor gave the book to my husband he decided that he would jump in and be involved because this was just as much his birth experience too. This book not only gave us tools necessary to having a natural childbirth but made our bond even closer as a husband and wife. After having a drug free labor/birth without any intervention and having a 9 pound baby girl my husband is SO glad he read and implemented the principles of this book. The Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth...Naturally, It Works!!!

Editorial Review:

A revised and updated guide to The Bradley Method of natural childbirth utilizes the teamwork approach to help fathers work with mothers to provide a joyful birthing experience that eliminates drugs, shortens labor, lessens complications, and promotes healthy newborns.

Editorial Review:

Have you ever been called a freak or a geek? Have you ever felt like one? Luke Jackson is 13 years old and has Asperger Syndrome. Over the years Luke has learned to laugh at such names but there are other aspects of life which are more difficult. Adolescence and the teenage years are a minefield of emotions, transitions and decisions and when a child has Asperger Syndrome, the result is often explosive.
Luke has three sisters and one brother in various stages of their adolescent and teenage years but he is acutely aware of just how different he is and how little information is available for adolescents like himself.
Drawing from his own experiences and gaining information from his teenage brother and sisters, he wrote this enlightening, honest and witty book in an attempt to address difficult topics such as bullying, friendships, when and how to tell others about AS, school problems, dating, relationships and morality.
Luke writes briefly about his younger autistic and AD/HD brothers, providing amusing insights into the antics of his younger years and advice for parents, carers and teachers of younger AS children. However, his main reason for writing was because "so many books are written about us, but none are written directly to adolescents with Asperger Syndrome. I thought I would write one in the hope that we could all learn together."

Editorial Review:

In the midst of a worldwide epidemic of autism, ADD, and ADHD, this book is a message of hope to parents embarking on the challenging journey of finding proper medical care for their Autism Spectrum Disorder children. Genetic susceptibility activated by "triggers" such as pesticides and heavy metals in vaccines can lead to immune system impairment, gut dysfunction, and pathogen invasion such as yeast and viruses in many children. This is the first book written by an experienced clinician that gives a step-by-step treatment guide for parents and doctors based on the understanding that ASD is a complex biomedical illness resulting in significant brain malnutrition. Dr. McCandless, whose grandchild with autism has inspired her "broad spectrum approach," describes important diagnostic tools needed to select appropriate treatment programs. Her book explains major therapies newly available and identifies safe and effective options for parents and physicians working together to improve the health of these special children.

fantastic resource 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As a pharmacist, this is absolutely the first book I turn to for any question about medication and breastfeeding. It's very readable, and has both the quick, "bottom-line" recommendation and an explanation of the quality and quantity of research that led to that conclusion. I recommend it to anyone in the medical field who might encounter a breastfeeding patient as well as any woman who is currently breastfeeding or plans to in the near future. The author's website ([...]) is also useful.

If the answers you're looking for aren't here, or if you're looking for detailed recommendations about medications in pregnancy, try your local teratology information service (www.otispregnancy.org). Most of them accept calls from both the public and health care professionals, many of them handle both lactation and pregnancy questions, and it's free to call and get information. I'm not affiliated with them in any way, but I've found them a very useful resource that doesn't seem to be very well publicized.

Disappointing 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 6 people found this review helpful.

After reading the other reviews of this book, and another by the same authors (The Pregnancy Book), I purchased both, and am dissatisfied with both. Both books are written at about the 8th grade level, and The Birth Book is definitely written with a solid bias towards one school of birthing techniques.

There's an entire section on "interviewing OBs and deciding which hospital to have your child." For those of us with insurance plans, and a hospital five minutes away, the browbeating about how you're irresponsible and don't care enough if you don't give your OB the fifth degree before allowing him or her to do his or her job, this can be a bit off-putting.

Additionally, the focus on having a "birth plan" and "envisoning your perfect day" comes off sounding a good deal more like planning a wedding than having a baby.

While the book does a good job of presenting a variety of different options that first-time mothers (like myself) might not have considered, I found that talking with my husband's aunt, an OB nurse of 30 years' experience, to be much more calming, simply because the tone of the aunt was one of common sense, while the tone of this book is, well. . . it's hard to characterize without being disparaging, but it's a little flower-power for my tastes.

Editorial Review:

Gives expectant parents an overview of the options available, offering up-to-the-minute advice on such matters as physical and emotional preparation, the father's role, avoiding a cesarean birth, and other information. 35,000 first printing. Tour.

The best option... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I feel that this is the best currently available option for ObGyn clerkship. Easy read and sufficient for passing mock boards - good luck!

Perfect! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is perfect for clinical rotations in OB/GYN. Although most blueprints are very helpful, this is my favorite out of the series because it gives you everything you need to know for your exams and clerkship, as well as helpful review questions in the end (like all blueprints). Very easy to read. I carried it with me throughout my rotation and excelled on the test.

Editorial Review:

One of the best selling and highly regarded volumes in the Blueprints series, Blueprints Obstetrics and Gynecology provides students with a concise review of what they need to know in their ob/gyn rotations or the Boards. Each chapter is brief and includes pedagogical features such as bolded key words, tables, figures, and Key Points. A question-and-answer section at the end of the book presents 100 board-format questions with rationales. The newest techniques in contraception and sterilization and hormone replacement therapies are covered, as are contemporary treatment options for uterine fibroids and invasive breast cancer. A companion Website includes a question bank and fully searchable text.

Editorial Review:

What is it like to live and work in a remote corner of the world and befriend a courageous midwife who breaks traditional roles? Monique and the Mango Rains: Two Years with a Mali Midwife is the inspiring story of Monique Dembele, an accidental midwife who became a legend, and Kris Holloway, the young Peace Corps volunteer who became her closest confidante. In a small village in Mali, West Africa, Monique saved lives and dispensed hope every day in a place where childbirth is a life-and-death matter and where many children are buried before they cut a tooth. Kris worked side-by-side with her as they cared for each other through sickness and tragedy and shared their innermost secrets and hopes. Monique’s life was representative of many women in one of the world’s poorest nations, yet she faced her challenges in extraordinary ways. Despite her fiercely traditional society and her limited education she fought for her beliefs—birth control, the end of female genital mutilation, the right to receive a salary, and the right to educate her daughters. And she struggled to be with the man she loved. Her story is one of tragedy joy, rebellion, and of an ancient culture in the midst of change. It is an uplifting tribute to indomitable spirits everywhere. Monique and the Mango Rains is a fascinating voyage to an unforgettable place, a voyage spent close to the ground, immersed in village life, learning first-hand the rhythms of this world. From witnessing her first village birth to the night of Monique’s own tragic death, Kris draws on her first-person experiences in Mali, her graduate studies in maternal and child health, medical and clinic records, letters and journals, as well as conversations with Monique, her family, friends and colleagues, to gives readers a unique view—and a friend in West Africa.
