Not what I was hoping for 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Like a lot of people out there, I had heard the myths about working out when you're pregnant, and was hoping to read about *real* research about what's truly right for you and your baby.

This book accomplished that goal: it provides an evidence-based description of the benefits of exercise. I now understand that it's not only OK to keep working out -- it's actually advantageous on a lot of levels.

However, this book could be organized better (it seems to skip around too much) and didn't quite have the "exercise prescription" that I'm looking for (I'm actually searching now on Amazon to find some other books to buy).

Bottomline, this book is great for informing you about the benefits and safety of exercise during pregnancy (even though the writing is, at times, kind of long-winded), but when it comes down to what to actually *do*, this book falls short.

P.S. The pictures in this book are from, like, 1983 or something, which kind of makes you feel like it's really not all that up-to-date.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Clapp offers specific exercise recommendations for all stages from preconception to post-delivery. 38 illustrations.

Excellent step-by-step 5 out of 5 stars.

Our daughter has DS and is having some GMS issues. However, this book provides instruction on how to progress to each step toward walking. The therpist we use has began to instruct us on some of these steps, but our daughter has already been through them, so it is keeping her ahead of the game. I've heard a lot about Patricia Winders, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy other books of hers as well.

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book for learning about gross motor development. As with the other books like it, this book follows stages rather than ages, so the user can focus on the particular child and his/her development.

Editorial Review:

Children with Down syndrome master gross motor skills -- everything from rolling over to running but need additional help and encouragement to maximise development. In this book the author, a physical therapist, shares her experience gained from sixteen years specialising in the motor development of children with Down Syndrome. This book provides parents and professionals with essential information about motor development including the impact of temperament and the effect of physical and medical conditions associated with Down syndrome.

Good advice 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I found this book on my first read to be informative, well sourced, and well thought out. Marilyn offers many tips on diet and supplements, many of which I'm trying to implement but I'm having a little trouble with the dietary because I'm a vegetarian who doesn't eat too many eggs or dairy, and she recommends 3 servings a day of dairy but then goes on to let you know that there can be some problems associated with dairy for infertile women, and that if you have PMS you can help the symptoms sometimes by avoiding dairy. Anyway, I thought the rest of the advice seems sound and is worth trying! It's a well-written book and I'm going to recommend it.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

Informative book starting from the basics about the female reproductive system to different situations that women encounter with their body throughout their life. Would definitely recommend this book to ALL females, so they know how their lifestyle affects their cycle and possible fertility status.

everyone needs to understand this book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

GFTN draws some frightening pictures and equally frightening conclusions. My attachment to this book is that it is essentially fact-based and scientific. I might not like the tale, but I believe the authors have done a good job at setting forth their case.
And, whether or not one agrees with the authors' methodology. conclusions or recommendations, one must read this book and understand its message.

Excellent book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book very clearly describes the effects of maternal drug use and early neglect/abuse on the child's brain, and later behavior. Very easy to read, includes case studies. Recommend for anyone who works with high risk families.

Ghosts From the Nursery 5 out of 5 stars.

I think this is such an important book. I bought this book several years ago & loaned it to someone to never see it again. However, I decided I needed to buy it again because I feel as an early childhood professional it is a wonderful resource...and really makes one realize how crucial the early years are.

Editorial Review:

As groundbreaking as Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring, Ghosts from the Nursery" presents startling evidence on how abuse and neglect during the first two years of life is creating a tide of violent youth National media tour.

Editorial Review:

The splendor and beauty of a child’s growth and development in the womb--seen through unforgettable images made possible by revolutionary advances in visualization technology

What’s happening with the baby now?
All expectant parents ask this question throughout the exhilirating months of pregnancy. Fuzzy sonograms and doctor’s explanations can provide basic information, but through Alexander Tsiaras’ remarkable achievements in medical imaging technology, parents can see, for the first time, the awe-inspiring process of a new life unfolding, in stunning, vivid detail.

The milestones of pregnancy which before could only be described can now be witnessed: the heart’s first beats; the appearance of color in the eye; the emergence of toes and teeth; the brain and nervous system directing development; the first movement of tiny legs and arms; the first indications of gender; the wondrous symbiosis of mother and child; the symphony of the body’s systems coming into being and working in concert. The book tracks the development of a baby from the moment of conception, through the explosively complex early stages of development and the amazing stages of growth as the baby is nurtured by the mother, ending with the joy of birth.

All this is made possible by revolutions in two sciences. As biologists have decoded the molecular basis of life, computer scientists have developed non-invasive, three-dimensional techniques for visualizing the body. Alexander Tsiaras has been a pioneer in merging these explorations and discoveries. He has created a virtual camera studio that enables him to view a human body or any part of it individually, scan it, enlarge it, rotate it, adjust its transparency so that we can view inside a living being, and light it from any angle. The result is an ability to illuminate the unseen elements that make us who we are, and the miraculous images in From Conception to Birth.

How frustrating is it to go to the doctor and just be told, "Take a pill and you'll be fine"? Or even WORSE, "It's all in your head"?!
This book LISTENS and KNOWS!! THANK YOU!!!

wonderfully informative 5 out of 5 stars.

I have read several books on women's hormones and women's issues. Dr. Vliet shares alot of information that no other book has. Questions that you needed to know the answer to, there are answers here. Even my gynecologist didn't know alot of what is in the book, but she has agreed with alot of what I have shared. Dr. Vliet is not biased towards one particular thing like natural hormones, no hormones, etc. She takes each subject and dissects it, looks at the pros and cons and talks about things objectively. That is REFRESHING. I learned a wealth of knowledge from reading this book as I had premature ovarian failure at 29. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

If you are Frustrated.................. 5 out of 5 stars.

.... you need to read this book? If you feel like your current Dr. is not helping you with your hormonal imbalance, then this is a MUST READ. I suggest reading this book before you even start any meds or hormone replacement therapies. Dr. Vliet will explain what most all other doctors are doing WRONG when it comes to diagnosing hormone imbalances.
Dr. Vliet's books are the BEST books I have ever read on the topic of Womens Hormones.

Editorial Review:

A physician describes how women should and can make their doctors take seriously their physical and emotional problems which are often dismissed.

This MAN does not understand estrogen at all. 2 out of 5 stars.
19 of 30 people found this review helpful.

This MAN does not understand estrogen at all. It is sad that so many women are apparently putting their health into his hands. The reason why so many women and good clinicians are avoiding products like Tri-est is because these products don't feed our bodies the necessary estrogens that our bodies actually produce from our ovaries. Giving women estriol and estrone just blocks our receptors from receiving the necessary and most important E2-estradiol. Our bodies will then metabolize the E2 into the others naturally. Research supports this aspect clearly. The other thing about this guy and his book is that he bounces everything he says off of premarin studies and does not keep the information flow consistent one way or another.

Most women getting on bio-identical hormones these days have never used premarin and want good research or clinical comparatives to support their choices with regards to bio-identicals. This book does not provide either good knowledge or research. Additionally, this book is quite disappointing for one that Amazon places so highly in their search engine.

Instead, I would recommend Wiley's book for the radical approach to understanding what it is we actually want to achieve with our bio-identicals, and Reiss's book for good information on how to monitor ourselves when using bio-identicals. However, Reiss, (another boy doctor) is also a proponent of Tri-est, probably because its just easier for him to prescribe.

Once our female clinicians have really worked out the bio-identicals that are working well for us, then we will all have great data to support our choices. In the meantime, avoid this book.

Editorial Review:

A book showing that natural hormone replacement offers a safe and effective alternative for the treatment of menopause.

The Best Book for the Novice 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be so helpful, since it was much easier to read for the novice herbalist. I am over 35 having my first pregnancy and want to do natural childbirth. This book has really helped me with what herbs to take for delivery and what to be aware of. I especially liked the chapter written by her husband. My husband was quite concerned about me going the "natural route" at my age. An excellent book for a first time mother.

Not as much information as I was hoping for 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This was an okay read, but a lot of it is common sense or things I already knew, and it's not very well written either (for instance, it contradicts itself several times). It didn't give me as much info as I'd have liked, especially since I'm trying to read the most books on pregnancy/childbirth/childrearing as I can in the time before my baby is born. There are lots more useful books out there...wouldn't recommend this one.

Editorial Review:

Reading The Natural Pregnancy Book is like having your own personal herbalist and midwife at your side. Expertly written by Aviva Jill Romm, it was one of the first books to explore botanical medicine and pregnancy. In this revised and updated edition, Ms. Romm thoughtfully follows the woman's journey from conception to birth, focusing on natural health. It is a complete guide for the woman who envisions a safe pregnancy without technological intervention, as nature intended.
