Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I own the 2nd ed. and am looking forward to owning the 3rd. This was recommended to me when I first started Critical Care (CC) Nursing 6 years ago and I have yet to find anything even close. I love the fact a physician wrote it. The information is much more clear than any CC nursing text/book I have bought. ... and I have tons. It follows more closely to the medical model, not a nursing format... ie. it doesn't include nursing diagnosis or nursing care. I feel much more confident discussing patients with colleagues, families and patients after looking up my facts in this book. As mentioned in other reviews, some may not think of this as a 'quick reference' book, but I know if I have it with me I am always referring to it. It's heavy because the print is large (also mentioned in other reviews) making it thick, but really is quite concise in all it's explanations. I would purchase this book for anyone involved in Critical Care.

Editorial Review:

This best-selling resource provides a general overview and basic information for all adult intensive care units. The material is presented in a brief and quick-access format which allows for topic and exam review. It provides enough detailed and specific information to address most all questions and problems that arise in the ICU. Emphasis on fundamental principles in the text should prove useful for patient care outside the ICU as well. New chapters in this edition include hyperthermia and hypothermia syndromes; infection control in the ICU; and severe airflow obstruction. Sections have been reorganized and consolidated when appropriate to reinforce concepts. Purchase of The ICU Book, Third Edition gives you free access to a Website featuring links from references to PubMed, updated regularly; and a directory of Websites handpicked by Dr. Marino.

I may buy several for my sisters and mother, not in the medical field. 5 out of 5 stars.

I am keeping this one for myself. Such a great informative book. I will be getting another as a gift for my aging mother. If you are not a medical professional you may want this book.

Completely Worthless 1 out of 5 stars.

This manual is completely worthless. Do NOT buy if you are just re-certifying; I really don't know what I was thinking. I gaurantee that you will not learn anything new.

I suppose it is worthwhile for those learning CPR for the first time (at least it's cheap).

Editorial Review:

War Surgery in Afghanistan and Iraq, with a foreword by Bob Woodruff, describes the management of nearly 100 cases of acute comat trauma, conducted in the forward austere operative environment of war in the 21st century. Presented with vivid surgical photos, the cases encompass the spectrum of trauma that characterizes war today, as well as the medical interventions constantly evolving to treat these wounds. With the most recent cases report from cobat hospitals within months of publication, this book presents emerging medical-surgical practice in real time. The authors discuss in detail an array of topics including: * Damage control surgery * Aggressive management of compartment syndrome * New directions in the management of head injuries * Use of tourniquets, * Decision analysis in the approach to vascular repairs and * Soft-tissue coverage of wounds. War Surgery in Afghanistan and Iraq provides all medical professionals with insight into the extraordinary technical, clinical, and ethical challenges of their deployed colleagues.

Title is deceiving... 2 out of 5 stars.
11 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Having been in practice for the last 25 years, I have seen a few of the procedures described in this book. (And then some.) Now teaching at the university level, I try to find textbooks that embody what the cover suggests. As for Jaffe's book: the accuracy is fair, but the way in which it is written is rather insulting to the anesthesiologist's intelligence. This book puts the emphasis on the surgeon's role and viewpoint as being paramount. There is a noticable lack of patient safety and comfort that is considered. This is, after all, why we are there. For documentation of specific surgical protocol, this is a reasonable text. For actual practice, there are better sources of information. Most who have been through residency know the ones I mean. Either change the name to "Surgical Procedures from the Surgeon's Point of View" or add information that would provide insight thus allowing the anesthesia practitioner to tailor their anesthetic to enhance the patient's overall surgical/anesthetic experience.

Editorial Review:

Completely updated for its Third Edition, this practical reference is a comprehensive guide to the anesthetic and perioperative management of patients during all procedures performed by general and subspecialist surgeons. The book explains each procedure from both the surgeon's and the anesthesiologist's perspective, presents details on anesthetic technique, and guides the anesthesiologist and surgeon through the decisions that must be made before, during, and after surgery. Emphasis is on factors that impact the anesthesiologist, including patient positioning, duration of surgery, and complications. The Third Edition covers 40 new and variant surgical procedures. New chapters include office-based surgery and invasive procedures in anesthesia.

this book is horrible 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I am a senior nursing student and I am appalled at this book. Our instructor loves it and has been using it. I brought to her attention that in the pediatric module, some of the pretest answers are WRONG!!! I know they are wrong- or I would not be a senior nursing student!!!! Out of all the majors and careers and textbooks that need to give accurate information- ACUTE CARE NURSING IS THE ONE!!!!! This is sooo extremely important! I am very disappointed.

High Acuity Nursing 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book has been very helpful to our new nurses who seem overwhelmed when they first get out of school. Self-paced modules help them incoorporate their knowledge with the types of patients they take care of. I have used this book for seasoned nurses too. They like the validation they get from being able to pre- and post-test.
A great teaching and learning tool for all nurses looking to review or to upgrade skills.

Anyone involved in anesthesia generally recognizes the Mass Gen. as the best pocket reference out there. This new edition is no different. When you need something fast b/c it has slipped your mind, this is the 'goto' book.

I highly recommend it to all MD/DOs, CRNAs & SRNAs.

Editorial Review:

Relied on for over 20 years by resident and practicing anesthesiologists and CRNAs, this best-selling pocket reference is now in its Seventh Edition. Clinician's Critique: Acute Care Handbook for P. T. 4 out of 5 stars.
29 of 29 people found this review helpful.

Congratulations to the authors of this valuable reference text! The Acute Care Handbook is, first of all, anything but a "handbook" in the traditional sense. It is lengthy and detailed, qualities which would make a more leisure-oriented read a sure bet for the bedside table. But, this useful book is not for dozing through. Rather, it makes for much easier quick searches or in-depth reviews of most topics critical to effective acute care physical therapists.

Two brief observations that might strengthen the utility of this reference book: First, a chapter on "Trauma or Multi-Trauma Patients" would be beneficial. Also, increased use of illustrations would enhance the book's impact.

Overall, though, this text has been a wonderful addition to my reference library. If you are an acute care therapist now, going to be one soon, or just need to "brush up" on this phase of rehabilitation, this book will definitely meet your reference needs.

Editorial Review:

This handy reference provides essential information for physical therapists providing patient care in the hospital setting. This is the only book written by physical therapists that addresses all of the areas in the complex acute care environment.

Outstanding 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is an outstanding little book for critical care nurses. It has a plethora of useful information including what all those obscure signs are (like Quincke's sign), common drugs and lab values. Plus more really nifty stuff. And it covers all the body systems, not just cardiovascular. I don't know why Amazon states that the title is "Quick Reference to Critical Care:Evaluation and Treatment of Cardiovascular Disorders". That is not the title on my book. My book is simply titled "Quick Reference to Critical Care". Great book that is worth every penny.

Editorial Review:

This pocket-sized book is a quick-reference guide to procedures, treatments, and stabilization techniques for disorders, injuries, and patient situations commonly seen in the critical care setting. The first section is organized by body system, with problems of each system alphabetized. The second section contains essential information on drugs, dosing, conversions, calculations, compatibilities, laboratory tests, and more. Cross-references with page numbers enable users to find the information they need quickly, without searching the index. This edition is thoroughly updated and includes a new chapter on imaging techniques.
