A Barash Follower 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

In Anesthesiology they say you are either a "Barash Person" or a "Miller Person." It is my personal opinion that Barash does probably the best job at providing content that is relevant and devoid of minutia. All sections contain material that is optimal for reading and assimilation. The text is large, yet it is far from dry. I highly recommend this as "The" backbone text for Anesthesiology!

Editorial Review:

Adhering to the same easy-to-use format as previous editions, the Fourth Edition of this text provides timely and insightful information into the principles of modern anesthesiology, office-based anesthesia, hazards and safety in the operating room, and the importance of cost-effective testing prior to administration of anesthesia. This comprehensive resource includes new chapters on the hazards of working in the OR, up-to-date information on how to prevent and manage OR fires if they occur, information on the newest guidelines for preoperative preparation including new fasting guidelines, administration of anesthesia for minimally invasive surgical techniques, and drug interactions.

Title is deceiving... 2 out of 5 stars.
11 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Having been in practice for the last 25 years, I have seen a few of the procedures described in this book. (And then some.) Now teaching at the university level, I try to find textbooks that embody what the cover suggests. As for Jaffe's book: the accuracy is fair, but the way in which it is written is rather insulting to the anesthesiologist's intelligence. This book puts the emphasis on the surgeon's role and viewpoint as being paramount. There is a noticable lack of patient safety and comfort that is considered. This is, after all, why we are there. For documentation of specific surgical protocol, this is a reasonable text. For actual practice, there are better sources of information. Most who have been through residency know the ones I mean. Either change the name to "Surgical Procedures from the Surgeon's Point of View" or add information that would provide insight thus allowing the anesthesia practitioner to tailor their anesthetic to enhance the patient's overall surgical/anesthetic experience.

Editorial Review:

This practical reference is a comprehensive guide to the anesthetic and perioperative management of patients during all procedures performed by general and subspecialist surgeons. The book explains each procedure from the surgeon's and anesthesiologist's perspective, presents details on anesthetic technique, and guides the anesthesiologist through the decisions that must be made before, during, and after surgery. The third edition has outsold its predecessors and has already exceeded LWW's LOE expectations. The Fourth Edition will be the first edition in full color.

concise book but could better for the digital book 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The book is useful and easy to read. However, there're some suggestions for the digital book.
(1) It is suggested to add the phonetic transcription of the drugs because I hope to know the pronunciation of each drugs.
(2) It is suggested to add the photos of the drugs.

For Psychiatry Residents and Students 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a must-have to keep all of the psychiatric drugs straight and learn the essential side effects, indications, distinguishing characteristics, drug-drug interactions, etc. that will be on the mock board/board exams.

Best drug reference for mental disorders 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The book helped me understand the medication that is prescribed for my foster children. I am able to talk to the doctor about the meds and I can look up what drug is used for what disorder. Also what the side effects are and what the behaviors to look for while they are on the meds. Great reference if you are working with people who are on medication for mental disorders.

Editorial Review:

This compact handbook features dosage, side effect, and drug interaction information for all psychiatric drugs. It includes information that is useful to the psychiatrist, internist, and student.

Excellent book for seasoned nurses to have as a reference or for a new nurse just starting in the neonatal unit. Comprehensive, well organized, easy to read and understand; photos, diagrams very helpful. Well worth the investment!

Too Complicated 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is too difficult to understand. The book says it is a resource for nurses but it talks about how to insert a central catheter and calculating fluid/electrolyte/glucose rquirements which I will not use. It is full of complex formulas and charts that take up entire pages. It is also full of hundreds of statistics that are boring and a waste of my time to read. I was looking for something that starts out more basic and is easier to read. This book is more geared towards physicians or experienced nurses but not new grads starting out in the NICU like myself. Someone reading this book will need an introduction to basic neonatology before they can understand this book.

Editorial Review:

This cornerstone neonatal handbook uniquely provides practical collaborative care of the critically ill neonate. Using a multidisciplinary team approach to care, it presents a combination of physiology and pathophysiology, application of these principles in clinical practice, and psychosocial aspects of care. This new edition features new chapters on pain and pain relief, and skin and skin care of the neonate. It is also thoroughly revised and updated.

Editorial Review:

Modern medical technology has changed not only the way we live but also the way we die. Until two generations ago, people usually died suddenly, after an accident or serious illness. Now, most of us may expect our dying to take longer, to require more care, and to demand more forethought than ever before.
Handbook for Mortals is warmly addressed to all those who wish to approach the final years of life with greater awareness of what to expect and greater confidence about how to make the end of our lives a time of growth, comfort, and meaningful reflection. Written by Dr. Joanne Lynn and a team of expert physicians, this book provides equal measures of practical information and wise counsel. Readers will learn what decisions they will need to face, what choices are available to them, where to look for help, how to ease pain and other symptoms, what to expect with specific diseases, how the health-care system operates, and how the entire experience affects dying persons, their families, and their friends. Such practical information is indispensable. But equally important are the personal stories included here of how people have come to terms with dying, how they have faced their fears and made their choices. These give us moving firsthand insights into a profoundly important process, one that is increasingly kept hidden in our culture.
From down-to-earth advice on how to talk to your doctor to inspiring quotes from such writers as Emily Dickinson, W. H. Auden, Jane Kenyon, and others, Handbook for Mortals encompasses the needs of both the body and the spirit in our final years.
