THE manual to carry in the ICU 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have been in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine practice for 9 years. This is the best ICU manual that I have come across. The material is thorough and up to date. At the same time, the authors & editors have kept it concise by using numerous tables and algorithms. Almost every aspect of ICU care was addressed. It is very hard to explain in words what a tremendous amount of information was put in such a neat, handy & easy-to-read manual. One has to really see and use this book to appreciate the great work. I recommend this book to anyone who works in medical ICUs.

Editorial Review:

Prepared by residents and faculty at the Washington University School of Medicine, this pocket manual contains easy-to-read algorithms for the management of more than 80 medical and surgical problems arising in the intensive care unit. Chapters focus on specific problems and the algorithms provide straightforward approaches to the management of these issues. Coverage includes a section on procedures commonly performed in the intensive care unit. Appendices include common equations in the ICU, drug-drug interactions, and common drug dosages and side effects.

Research-based and comprehensive 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

There are many good airway management books. However, Manual of Emergency Airway Management is, without a doubt, one of the finest texts written on airway management. Of particular note is the extended discussion on the use of the bag valve mask. Many texts, including textbooks, gloss over the techniques of BMV as if it was too pedestrian. Walls has not.

Everything is well-researched and based not on opinion, but objectively supported by significant research with gobs of footnotes. The first chapter alone, discussing the decision to intubate, is worth the price of the book itself.

While geared mostly to emergency physicians, there is significant value for the pre-hospital provider. Walls has not done any favors for the pre-hospital community by designating a single, and rather brief, chapter on pre-hospital airway management. Despite this, well over half of the chapters pertain directly to improving airway management skills for providers of all levels, from first responder to ED physician.

While and excellent text overall, the paltry sections specific to the pre-hospital provider need improvement.

Editorial Review:

Prepared by the faculty of the National Emergency Airway Management Course, this manual is an expert, practical guide to emergency airway management in any adult or pediatric patient. It offers step-by-step instructions on techniques, drug administration, and prevention and management of complications and includes a complete section on difficult clinical scenarios. The book is packed with easy-to-follow algorithms and diagrams and helpful mnemonics. Each of the Third Edition's chapters includes improved full-color illustrations and updated evidence-based analyses of procedures. A new section geared to the prehospital setting presents current National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians guidelines, including alternative airway devices.

Editorial Review:

The team of nurses that Tilda Shalof found herself working with in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a big-city hospital was known as “Laura’s Line.” They were a bit wild: smart, funny, disrespectful of authority, but also caring and incredibly committed to their jobs. Laura set the tone with her quick remarks. Frances, from Newfoundland, was famous for her improvised recipes. Justine, the union rep, wore t-shirts emblazoned with defiant slogans, like “Nurses Care But It’s Not in the Budget.” Shalof was the one who had been to university. The others accused her of being “sooo sensitive.”

They depended upon one another. Working in the ICU was both emotionally grueling and physically exhausting. Many patients, quite simply, were dying, and the staff strove mightily to prolong their lives. With their skill, dedication, and the resources of modern science, they sometimes were almost too successful. Doctors and nurses alike wondered if what they did for terminally-ill patients was not, in some cases, too extreme. A number of patients were admitted when it was too late even for heroic measures. A boy struck down by a cerebral aneurysm in the middle of a little-league hockey game. A woman rescued – too late – from a burning house. It all took its toll on the staff.

And yet, on good days, they thrived on what they did. Shalof describes a colleague who is managing a “crashing” patient: “I looked at her. Nicky was flushed with excitement. She was doing five different things at the same time, planning ahead for another five. She was totally focused, in her element, in control, completely at home with the chaos. There was a huge smile on her face. Nurses like to fix things. If they can.”

Shalof, a veteran ICU nurse, reveals what it is really like to work behind the closed hospital curtains. The drama, the sardonic humour, the grinding workload, the cheerful camaraderie, the big issues and the small, all are brought vividly to life in this remarkable book.

Better off? 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

An inevitable must for all new residents coming into the world of anaesthesia and medical technology.
Each new edition of the book gets more and more modern equipment oriented - losing out on the simplistic educational value of the older equipment. The gradual loss of the Non-rebreathing valves, from the second edition followed by Goldman vaporizer, EMO, OMV etc has reduced the level of 'ease of understanding' for fresh residents. Indeed, the focus on high tech is a drawback for practice of field/military/third world anaesthesia. There is something to be learnt from the old Ward, Ehrenwerth or even the Farman for youngsters.
Other than this, an excellent & comprehensive textbook. Could have done with a little more detail on advanced newer technologies being introduced.

ICU BOOK 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

DIDN'T HAVE AS MANY HELPFUL HINTS AS PROMISED BUT STILL A GOOD BOOK. DUPLICATES MATERIAL FOUND IN MANY OTHER BOOKS ALREADY OWNED.

Editorial Review:

Ideal for quick reference at the bedside, The Little ICU Book of Facts and Formulas is a smaller, condensed, compact, and portable version of The ICU Book, Third Edition. Most of the chapters in the larger book have been retained in the little book, but each chapter has been completely rewritten to include only the most essential information. The content is presented in outline format for easy access, and the book is densely packed with facts and formulas that represent the essentials of patient care in the adult ICU.

Handy! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

When you want the best go to the people who "wrote the book". UMBC continues the quality of care form the ED to the field. This is one of the best pocket guides I have ever come across, chunk full of usefull info for ANY medical provider.

Good resource 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Overall I am impressed with the content in the field guide. It has alot of info that others don't have. My only complaint about it is the layout. Sometimes it can be difficult to find things, unless you know right where they are. Tabs on the pages would help this. Otherwise it is a great reference.

Editorial Review:

This guide is designed with the special needs of field practitioners in mind. This useful, quick reference guide helps speed recognition of lab values, 12 lead ECG interpretation, fibrinolytics agents, hemodynamic monmitoring, IABP's, rapid sequence intubation, chest tubes, and therapeutic medications and toxology for the critial care transport provider.

good quick reference. 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

good quick reference book. layout is open and easy to read but lacking the details. needs to read up more like uptodate or emedicine. if you have a PDA, getting the pda version would be nicer than the book version as it is too big & heavy.

Great content, but not pocket-able. 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

5-min. Emergency has the (very useful) information of a pocket-reference in a non-pocket size. I find the PDA version MUCH more useful on a day-to-day basis. (I use Skyscape's version--I think there are others.) The bulleted, abbreviated style works very well on a PDA screen, and becomes quick and pocketable, something the hardback just can't do.

Editorial Review:

Stellar editorship combines with the famous "5-Minute" format for a resource no emergency department should be without. Coverage includes presenting signs and symptoms, medical disorders, pediatric disorders, trauma, environment, poisoning, and a clinical pharmacology formulary. Concentrating on the conditions most commonly encountered in the ER, the text enables fast retrieval of information, including basics, etiology, diagnosis, treatment, disposition, and miscellaneous concerns such as coding and references

Editorial Review:

Heal Your Pain Now with Expressive Writing

What do diarists and journal writers know that can help anyone dealing with a traumatic or emotionally challenging situation recover from pain and regain their peace of mind?

They know that the act of putting thoughts and feelings on paper is, itself, a powerful exercise that makes them feel heard and acknowledged—a way of regaining perspective and control over the events that move through their lives.

In this book, the preeminent psychologist and researcher in the growing field of expressive emotions therapy, or EET, takes readers through a series of guided writing exercises that help them explore their feelings about difficult experiences. Each chapter begins with an introduction that explains how to proceed with the journal exercise and what it is structured to help accomplish. Readers are encouraged to do the exercise in the journal itself—each chapter provides plenty of ruled space—so that they can frequently refer to their own work and gain insight and clarity from their own words. The text offers encouragement and gentle advice for breaking through those inevitable moments when mental block make writing impossible; stream-of-consciousness and automatic writing clears away the obstacle and inspires the journal writer to even deeper levels of self-expression. The text stresses throughout the power for understanding and coping with difficult times that lies in storytelling, whether through fiction, dance, or art. In all, the exercises will leave readers with a strong sense of their value in the world and the ability to accept that which is sometimes hard to accept—that life can be good even when it is sometimes bad.

The standard 4 out of 5 stars.

This textbook should be the standard for any surgeon taking care of trauma patients. Some of the graphics are poorly reproduced and dated, but the information is current and well presented.

Trauma Bible 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am not a trauma specialist, but reading many chapters of this book has helped me understand a lot of the principles of this complex aspect of medicine.

The book is very up-to-date and I have never heard a trauma car-giver make bad comments about it. All 3 trauma attendings I have worked with have recommended this book.

For a surgery resident that does trauma rotation, I think this might be too much. Pubmed instead would be more value-for-time, but if you want to study further this is a great book.

Editorial Review:

The classic trauma surgery text! This comprehensive and authoritative reference text covers prevention and pre-hospital care transport through trauma "scoring" as well as operative and non-operative management. Known for its current and practical coverage, the book features a commentary for each chapter written by a leading expert in the field.
