Use this book as a doorstop 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This book is not for the beginer in blood banking. It is disjointed, confusing, difficult to comprehend, and does not flow in a logical manner. It was written by several authors, including Harmening. This probably accounts for the confusing flow. May be helpful to experienced blood bankers, but if you are a begining student trying to fathom the many intricacies of blood banking, this book will make you want to tear your hair out. Without a doubt, the worst text book I have ever read and I have a master's degreee and 1.5 years toward my PhD. Avoid this book like the plague unless you have prior knowledge or experience. It will turn you off blood banking forever. I give it a D for effort (a poor and poorly edited effort).

Editorial Review:

Modern Blood Banking and Transfusion Practices continues to set the standard for teaching and learning modern blood banking. Thorough, yet concise, the fifth edition begins with a review of basic science, plus the history of blood preservation, and continues to provide students with a working knowledge of modern blood banking as it focuses on the how and why of transfusion practice, presenting a perfect "crossmatch" of theory and practice.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive text examines normal hematopoiesis through diseases of erythroid, myeloid, lymphoid and megakaryocytic origins. Hemostasis and coagulation theory, testing, and instrumentation are also thoroughly discussed. Beautiful full-color illustrations throughout the text enhance comprehension and allow students to realistically visualize hematology concepts.

  • Detailed, full-color illustrations appear near hematology concept discussions to visually support comprehension and recognition.
  • Opening Case Studies present real-life scenarios to apply concepts presented in each chapter.
  • Learning Objectives and Review Questions work together to list expected outcomes and then test those concepts for each chapter.
  • A Bulleted Summary highlights the key concepts at the end of each chapter.
  • Hematology/Hemostasis Reference Ranges inside the front and back covers provide quick reference.

  • Three new chapters detail significant information: An Overview of Clinical Laboratory Hematology, Hematology in Selected Populations, and Monitoring Anticoagulant Therapy.
  • All chapters have been revised to feature the most current technology and research updates.
  • The included Glossary of Terms and consistent pedagogy ensure a cohesive, effective tool for learning.
  • Two well-respected editors contributed more significantly to this third edition: George Fritsma shared his expertise for the Hemostasis section and Kathy Doig managed the pedagogical features.

One of the best med school texts 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is by far amongst the best medical school texts (not incl. board review stuff) out there. The 4th ed. covers all areas of hematology in a lucid, non-verbose style. I found it easy to read assigned sections for my Heme course in a timely and efficient manner. There is a good blend of pathophysiology and biochemical mechanisms essential to understanding disease processes; however, the presentation is straightforward. The text has frequent color cartoons, images, graphs and tables, which helped me visualize concepts. Moreover, modern diagnostics and treatment rationale are also adequately explaned. Overall, I am really glad i purchased this book, and plan to keep it for future reference.

Editorial Review:

Essential Haematology is established as the most authoritative introduction to the subject for bioscience and medical students, junior doctors, laboratory scientists and nurses. This new edition is beautifully presented, introducing the formation and function of blood cells, and diseases that arise from dysfunction and disruption of these processes. Basic science, diagnostic tests and clinical features and management are all easily explained.

THE introductory text for clinical and laboratory haematology

  • An authoritative and accessible textbook now fully revised
  • Beautifully presented – a joy to learn from
  • Features a new standardized approach to clinical features and management of disease

I think this is a pretty good book for phelbotomy students. The book goes into great depth about various blood tests and the equipment used. The language used was simple enough for laypersons to understand. This book also prepares you for the National exam.

I am not a medical professional, terrific book! 5 out of 5 stars.

As a layperson who wants to help people type thier blood with home blood typing kits, but be responsible about disposal, this books is a gem of information. The surprise for me is how much marvelous information is contaianed beyond responsible bloodletting. This book contains some anatomy, and describes the body systems. Excellent book! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I used this book for our heme/oncology organ segment in pathology and thought it was a wonderful book! It taught me well what I had not been able to fully understand before, and I can see myself still using it as a reference during clinical rotations.

Editorial Review:

This is the first comprehensive, accurate introductory text on hematology for medical students. The many topics of hematology are covered and each chapter begins with an overview and then proceeds to an outline of key concepts for each specialty area. The text includes simple line drawings, algorithms and color plates, and features bulleted points and bolded key words. With its depth, and concise format, this book serves as a thorough text, general reference, and a review for the USMLE Step 1 exam, and is a valuable tool for the internal medicine clerkship rotation and exam.
