Great, but type is microscopic! 4 out of 5 stars.

This is an invaluable resource in terms of content. It is the pocket size, which is convenient. Understand that the small size means that the type is incredibly small. You might need a microscope to read this!

Great Clinical Reference! 5 out of 5 stars.

For all medical practitioners this Sanford Guide is the definitive pocket guide for infectious disease treatment. Updated annually with the latest treatment recommendations from professional groups. I use it nearly daily when considering antibiotic selection and disease treatment.

Not convenient to use 2 out of 5 stars.

The book had all the information I wanted but the print was totally unreadable due to size...I opted for the more expensive spiral bound version.

best pocketbook for clinicians 5 out of 5 stars.

for medical doctors who work in a busy health unit and need at any time a handy book to review antibiotics, bugs and side effects.
very-very helpfull for clinicians with a subspesialty (rheumatology, nephrology, hematology etc) who need fast to have access on information such as the appropriate antibiotic and the first in line medication.

must be in your pocket for inpatient/outpatient care! 4 out of 5 stars.

We all need this pocket book to stay current on Abx. Rx and Tx.--period. Dosing, too, and specific infective regimens are also noted. My only complaint is that sometimes it is confusing and tedious to FIND what you need. An updated charting system, and easier to find categories would be nice in the next edition.

Editorial Review:

Successfully tested in the authors' courses at Boston University and Harvard University, this text combines theory and practice in presenting traditional and new epidemiologic concepts. Broad in scope, the text opens with five chapters covering the basic epidemiologic concepts and data sources. A major emphasis is placed on study design, with separate chapters devoted to each of the three main analytic designs: experimental, cohort, and case-control studies. Full chapters on bias, confounding, and random error, including the role of statistics in epidemiology, ensure that students are well-equipped with the necessary information to interpret the results of epidemiologic studies. An entire chapter is also devoted to the concept of effect measure modification, an often-neglected topic in introductory textbooks. Up-to-date examples from the epidemiologic literature on diseases of public health importance are provided throughout the book. The second edition has been thoroughly revised with up-to-date examples and data from epidemiologic literature and features over 100 new study questions.

nice treatment of biostatistics 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Bernard Rosner is a Harvard Professor of Biostatistics. He has written an introductory text for undergraduate and graduate medical school students. It covers the basics of probability and inference including categorical data. Other topics include regression, correlation and survival analysis. It is written for students with no math beyond high school algebra but common mathematical notation is freely used. It includes a diskette with data for examples. Many examples are given to illustrate the concepts and SAS ouput is used to illustrate the results and familiarize the students so that they can interpret statistical output. Many exercises are given at the end of each chapter. Several require use of the data sets on the diskette. I think the author has been careful to try to make the subject understandable to medical students. He also has used the lectures notes that were the basis of the text in courses he taught in the Harvard Medical School. So he knows his audience. A unique feature is the catergorizing of exercises by medical specialty.

Rosner tries to fill an important need and does a good job. He avoids heavy mathematics without turning the text into a cookbook. This is now the fourth edition. So many improvements have been made. I gave it 4 stars. It probably deserves 4 and 1/2 stars.

Editorial Review:

FUNDAMENTALS OF BIOSTATISTICS (WITH CD-ROM) leads you through the methods, techniques, and computations necessary for success in the medical field. Every new concept is developed systematically through completely worked out examples from current medical research problems.

A True Horror Story 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Fascinated by anything related to virology, I love this book. As a account of true events, it is a page turner. It does not read like the stereotypical stuffy non-fiction book. I could not put it down. I felt I was right there in the labs with the protagonists. I almost felt as though I would come down with the virus just by reading about it.

Good for Non-Fiction 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book was required summer reading for me, and at first I was a little bit hesitant to pick up a non-ficiton book. I usually gravitate more towardes horror novels. However, this book suprised and delighted me. It read like a cohesive fiction novel, it didn't throw too many facts or figures or scientific jargan at you. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in viruses or any type of science field.

Editorial Review:

The dramatic and chilling story of an Ebola virus outbreak in a surburban Washington, D.C. laboratory, with descriptions of frightening historical epidemics of rare and lethal viruses. More hair-raising than anything Hollywood could think of, because it's all true.

Where were the editors? 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I just finished Steven Johnson's "Ghost Map". Not to be rude, but how does this stuff get published? For Pete's sake, the name of the book is ghost map, and there is not even a copy of the ghost map in the book.

The book itself lacks any kind of literary punch. Ostensibly about John Snow and cholera, in which there is probably an interesting story if told with focus, Johnson rambles pointlessly around campy urban planning doggerel.

I guess Johnson's reputation is so unassailable that editors don't bother to read what they publish. And that is what the book lacks, an editor.

The worst part is Johnson's attack on the foolish orthodoxy of the miasmaists, while he dutifully regurgitates the junior-high platitudes to Darwinist orthodoxy, when doing so adds absolutely nothing to the story, except to confirm his own Party loyalty.

Editorial Review:

A National Bestseller, a New York Times Notable Book, and an Entertainment Weekly Best Book of the Year

It's the summer of 1854, and London is just emerging as one of the first modern cities in the world. But lacking the infrastructure-garbage removal, clean water, sewers-necessary to support its rapidly expanding population, the city has become the perfect breeding ground for a terrifying disease no one knows how to cure. As the cholera outbreak takes hold, a physician and a local curate are spurred to action-and ultimately solve the most pressing medical riddle of their time.

In a triumph of multidisciplinary thinking, Johnson illuminates the intertwined histories of the spread of disease, the rise of cities, and the nature of scientific inquiry, offering both a riveting history and a powerful explanation of how it has shaped the world we live in.

another fine introductory biostatistics book 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Like Rosner's book by the same publisher, this text is an introductory text by Harvard professors who teach medical students. It seems to be in competition with Rosner's book which makes me wonder why the same publisher is publishing them both. The style is different but the market and level of the two books seem to be the same. Both texts include diskettes with data for PCs. Both books are well written and cover mostly the same topics. The Pagano text seems to go into a little more detail on contingency tables and survival analysis. Both contain lists of valuable references.

Editorial Review:

Marcello Pagano and Kimberlee Gauvreau's PRINCIPLES OF BIOSTATISTICS, Second Edition is a concepts-based introduction to statistical procedures that prepares public health, medical, and life sciences students to conduct and evaluate research. With an engaging writing style and helpful graphics, the emphasis is on concepts over formulas or rote memorization. Throughout the book, the authors use practical, interesting examples with real data to bring the material to life.

Editorial Review:

“Making Connections” Microbiology: A Systems Approach is a non-majors/allied health microbiology textbook that has quickly become known for its unique organization, engaging writing style, and instructional art program. Cowan’s “building blocks” approach establishes the big picture first and then gradually layers concepts onto this foundation. This logical structure helps students build knowledge and connect important concepts.

Editorial Review:

A groundbreaking and controversial narrative investigation into the science, history, medical politics, and patient experience of Lyme disease told by a science journalist whose entire family contracted the disease.
Pamela Weintraub paints a nuanced picture of the intense controversy and crippling uncertainty surrounding Lyme disease and sheds light on one of the angriest medical disputes raging today. She also reveals her personal odyssey through the land of Lyme after she, her husband and their two sons became seriously ill with the disease beginning in the 1990s.
From the microbe causing the infection and the definition of the disease, to the length and type of treatment and the kind of practitioner needed, Lyme is a hotbed of contention. With a CDC-estimated 200,000-plus new cases of Lyme disease a year, it has surpassed both AIDS and TB as the fastest-spreading infectious disease in the U.S. Yet alarmingly, in many cases, because the disease often eludes blood tests and not all patients exhibit the classic "bulls-eye" rash and swollen joints, doctors are woefully unable or unwilling to diagnose Lyme. When that happens, once-treatable infections become chronic, inexorably disseminating to cause disabling conditions that may never be cured.
Weintraub reveals why the Lyme epidemic has been allowed to explode, why patients are dismissed, and what can be done to raise awareness in the medical community and find a cure. The most comprehensive book ever written about the past, present and future of Lyme disease, this exposes the ticking clock of a raging epidemic.
