An excellent, detailed overview for both experts and novices 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 23 people found this review helpful.

This text is an excellent textbook for both infectious disease professionals and for students of infectious disease epidemiology. Nelson and colleagues cover a range of essential topics from a survey of important historical epidemics to study designs for infectious disease investigations. The first part of the text covers ID epidemiology background and methodology, whereas the second focuses on specific diseases as examples of different transmission modalities. TB, HIV and Influenza are among the pathogens discussed in great detail. Chapters are written by experts in their respective fields, making this textbook not only authoritative, but also up-to-date in scope and content. Many of the authors are affiliated with the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health or the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. "Infectious Disease Epidemiology" is extremely readable, and serves as an excellent reference tool. I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive resource applies the fundamentals of epidemiology to the study of infectious diseases (ID). In the first section, readers will learn about basic epidemiologic methods for the study of ID plus be introduced to newer techniques like geographical information systems, mathematical modeling, and genetic laboratory tools. In the second section, the book covers major infectious diseases to illustrate both the range of techniques and issues vital to epidemiologists, and to highlight those diseases that have a major impact on health around the world. These include diseases of high mortality and morbidity such as malaria, HIV, STDs, diarrhea, and those with unique epidemiology such as parasitic diseases and Lyme disease.

Editorial Review:

1793, Philadelphia. The nation's capital and the largest city in North America is devastated by an apparently incurable disease, cause unknown . . .
In a powerful, dramatic narrative, critically acclaimed author Jim Murphy describes the illness known as yellow fever and the toll it took on the city's residents, relating the epidemic to the major social and political events of the day and to 18th-century medical beliefs and practices. Drawing on first-hand accounts, Murphy spotlights the heroic role of Philadelphia's free blacks in combating the disease, and the Constitutional crisis that President Washington faced when he was forced to leave the city—and all his papers—while escaping the deadly contagion. The search for the fever's causes and cure, not found for more than a century afterward, provides a suspenseful counterpoint to this riveting true story of a city under siege.

Thoroughly researched, generously illustrated with fascinating archival prints, and unflinching in its discussion of medical details, this book offers a glimpse into the conditions of American cities at the time of our nation's birth while drawing timely parallels to modern-day epidemics. Editorial Review:

Change is constant in everyday life. Infants crawl and then walk, children learn to read and write, teenagers mature in myriad ways, the elderly become frail and forgetful. Beyond these natural processes and events, external forces and interventions instigate and disrupt change: test scores may rise after a coaching course, drug abusers may remain abstinent after residential treatment. By charting changes over time and investigating whether and when events occur, researchers reveal the temporal rhythms of our lives. Applied Longitudinal Data Analysis is a much-needed professional book for empirical researchers and graduate students in the behavioral, social, and biomedical sciences. It offers the first accessible in-depth presentation of two of today's most popular statistical methods: multilevel models for individual change and hazard/survival models for event occurrence (in both discrete- and continuous-time). Using clear, concise prose and real data sets from published studies, the authors take you step by step through complete analyses, from simple exploratory displays that reveal underlying patterns through sophisticated specifications of complex statistical models.
Applied Longitudinal Data Analysis offers readers a private consultation session with internationally recognized experts and represents a unique contribution to the literature on quantitative empirical methods.

Necessary Handbook for the Yeast Sufferer! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was lucky enough to find a physician to test me for Candidiasis after suffering from it for 15 years! However, he had no idea how to treat it so was open to my suggestions. I brought this book in with passages highlighted and he was willing to try the treatment exactly as outlined in your book! This was very recent so at this point in time, I am suffering from the initial die-off symptoms, but that gives me hope that it's actually working!

Editorial Review:

Most people don't realize how many health disorders can be caused by yeast. Fatigue, headache, depression, digestive problems, PMS, sexual dysfunction, asthma, ADHD, and autism can all be yeast-related. But once you recognize that yeast is the offender, what can you do to regain your health?

The Yeast Connection Handbook is a great resource for anyone who wants to learn about yeast-related problems. The book is comprehensive, not only discussing a wide range of health disorders, but also addressing a wide range of sufferers, including men, women, and children. Most important, this book provides a step-by-step program that effectively relieves health problems through dietary changes, nutritional supplements, medication, and simple lifestyle changes. If you've been looking for a solution to your yeast-related problem, The Yeast Connection Handbook provides the information you need to take charge of your health.

The trials of being a forensic anthropologist 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I recieved this book as a gift when I was in high school. I loved it then. Since I've recently finished a Masters in forensic anthropology myself, I decided to pull it off my shelf and give it another run through.

This is hands down the most honest and truthful illustration of what it's like to work in this field in a market flooded with a glut of products dedicated to the likes of Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs. Every Bones/CSI fan needs to read this book and learn about the un-glamorous parts of these careers. I went into my career as a forensic anthropologist with a realistic understanding of the job because of Dr. Maples' great prose. While the CSI wannabes whine about the maggots and the smell, I do my job.

This is a great book for anyone who is interested in forensic science and should be a required read in introductory courses.

Is it really good? 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The eleventh edition is good in many aspects. But it cannot be denied that it is not as good as Koneman's book. Bailey and Scott is more suitable only for the bench technicians and not for researchers and graduate students. The book churns out table after table, in the name of comparative analysis. A student's mind will have difficulty in memorising and reproducing tables in the exam. In that sense, the lucid style of presentation in Koneman is commendable. Probably, the author of B&S did not have 'the student' in their mind when they wrote it. Another grossly lacking area is Parasitology. When compared to books written by Indian authors like SC Parija and Chatterjea, Bailey and Scott lags far behind. Probably, it is because parasitic infections are less in the US, which is why this area has been under emphasised.
As a gradute student in India, I would strongly encourage my friends and fellow microbiologists to singularly follow Koneman alone. Trying to use Koneman with Bailey and Scott or trying to substitute Koneman with Bailey and Scott is an exercise in futility.
These are my personal views only. Perhaps, students who want to finish studying clinical microbiology quickly because of the proximity of the exam dates, can go for Bailey and Scott. For MD students like me, we all in our college unanimously vote for the
Koneman.

Editorial Review:

The classic text known as the 'gold standard' in microbiology is now revised, reorganized, and up-to-date. Always comprehensive and current, this edition features even more new information on hot topics such as identification systems, quality control organisms, antiparasitic agents, HIV viral load testing, HIV genotyping, Hepatitis C virus, antivirals, and a new procedure for the motility test. In addition, thoroughly revised material reflects the latest advances and developments. New clinical case studies challenge students to think critically and apply what they've learned in realistic situations, and a compartmentalized organization keeps related topics together so information is easy to find.

Lupus, a disease of the immune system, can be quite deadly, claiming the lives of thousands of patients yearly. Dr. Daniel J. Wallace is one of the world's leading authorities on this disorder, an eminent clinician who has treated over 2000 lupus patients, the largest such practice in America. His The Lupus Book, originally published in 1995, immediately established itself as the most readable and helpful book on the disease.
Now Dr. Wallace has once again completely revised The Lupus Book, incorporating a wealth of new information. This Third Edition discusses the newest breakthroughs in drug treatments and alternative therapies as well as updated information on the immune system--all laid out in user-friendly language that any patient could understand. And as in past editions, the book provides absolutely lucid answers to such questions as: What causes lupus? How and where is the body affected? Can a woman with lupus have a baby? And how can one manage this disease? There is also a glossary of terms and an appendix of lupus resource materials compiled by the Lupus Foundation of America.
Over a million Americans have lupus and some tens of thousands of patients die every year from the disease. The Third Edition of The Lupus Book offers these patients and their families a wealth of reliable, up-to-date information that will help them manage the disease and live a happier life.

Editorial Review:

Upon its original publication, Plagues and Peoples was an immediate critical and popular success, offering a radically new interpretation of world history as seen through the extraordinary impact--political, demographic, ecological, and psychological--of disease on cultures. From the conquest of Mexico by smallpox as much as by the Spanish, to the bubonic plague in China, to the typhoid epidemic in Europe, the history of disease is the history of humankind. With the identification of AIDS in the early 1980s, another chapter has been added to this chronicle of events, which William McNeill explores in his new introduction to this updated editon.

Thought-provoking, well-researched, and compulsively readable, Plagues and Peoples is that rare book that is as fascinating as it is scholarly, as intriguing as it is enlightening. "A brilliantly conceptualized and challenging achievement" (Kirkus Reviews), it is essential reading, offering a new perspective on human history.
