Save money and buy this rather than the new edition 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

We used the newer edition of this book for my EMT-B class, but I wanted to save money so I bought this one instead. Most of the info is exactly the same, there are just older pictures. My class didn't use our book very much, so it didn't matter that mine had different page numbers and stuff. Ask your teacher first, but I would strongly strongly recommend getting this edition to save yourself a lot of money.

PHEC 4 out of 5 stars.

Great Book. Was very useful regarding the PHEC level training in New Zealand. DVD was excellent to work through when I could not be bothered reading. Full of excellent tables, diagrams, charts etc for ease of study. Overall an excellent book for those looking to start their EMS/PHEC career.

Very Helpful and Objective 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I found this book helpful and objective. For example, this book explains that Hep B becomes a danger when your child is a teenager and makes the choice to use intravenous drugs or have unprotected sex. And by the time infants become teenagers those shots they had as infants are not effective anymore. Facts like this are very helpful. I am only sorry that I was not aware of this sooner since my toddler has had all 3 Hep B shots, the first one was in the hospital, not that I was asked if I wanted my 2 day old newborn to be given the Hep B shot.

I felt sick to my stomach about bringing my infant to his well doctor visits since he was 2 months old because that is when the shots began. I was not aware of any literature then, but I felt in my heart that he was too young and too vulnerable to get 7 vaccinations injected into him (7 vaccinations within 4 shots).

I agreed to 1 shot at 2 months and he took that just fine. Before his 4 month visit I read the book "A Shot in the Dark" and realized there was some unnecessary danger with shots for my infant. I agreed to 2 shots at his 4 month visit. After that I purchased this book and my now 15 month old has had very limited shots and has handled all of them well. I plan on not giving him the DTP and MMR shot at all, and the rest given slowly. My first Pediatrician asked me to leave their office since I was not willing to give my 2 month infant all 7 shots. My current Pediatrician is wonderful and very supportive in my decision to give my son limited shots, because she has seen some horrible reactions and also has seen those children who have had shots still get the disease, in particular the Whooping cough and Measles.

I can honestly say my 15 month old has not been sick yet. All my friends & family have chosen to fully vaccinate their babies and every one of them has been sick more then once before their 1st birthdays. This of course may or may not have to do with the shots, but I kind of wonder if it does.

As parents, we have to make the decisions that we feel are best for our children. And it should be just that - Our decision. After reading this book or others like it, you have to decide which is the lesser of two evils and make the decision that you feel most comfortable with. Just be prepared to be a little nervous either way you go.

Editorial Review:

The Vaccine Guide covers each disease and its vaccine, providing difficult-to-obtain facts about vaccine reactions. Also discussed are vaccine effectiveness, toxicity and adverse effects, legal requirements, alternatives, and the latest information on the threat of bioterrorism. New to this edition are topics of particular concern to adults, including smallpox and anthrax vaccines, flu shots, and new conditions linked to vaccine reactions.

Editorial Review:

'LifeForce' by Chiropractor Jeffrey S. McCombs outlines a simple and effective approach to preventing and overcoming disease, illness, and other health concerns that has been used by many of the author's patients. The LifeForce Plan is a potent tool for detoxifying the body, reestablishing the normal flora of the tissues, and reawakening the body's innate ability to regulate, balance, and protect itself. It teaches us how to activate the endless life-force potential that resides in every cell of our bodies. The seemingly miraculous results are achieved through a time-proven approach to reversing the ravaging effects that antibiotics have had on our bodies. Though antibiotics are useful, it is their worldwide overuse, misuse, and general application that have produced a devastating imbalance. The LifeForce Plan reverses that imbalance and restores the regenerative, life-enhancing cycle of the body, as the dominant cycle over the degenerative, 'ageing' cycle. The Plan succeeds where other anti-Candida diets have continuously failed, due to key fundamental insights, and it also provides a way to balance the effects of antibiotics when their judicious use is necessary. This is not intended to be a typical diet book. It offers a way to achieve better 'biofeedback' from the body that will enable you to make dietary choices that will work for you. The Plan is a 'bridge' back to an optimal state of health for our bodies.

Epi for Public Health Practice 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The book is very well written. Clean examples are given. The authors do a great job of avoiding complex and confusing examples. The book made epidemiology more interesting and much easier to understand than it could have been. Charts, graphs, and tables help clear up differences between similar concepts and provide examples of concepts.

Editorial Review:

Epidemiologic speculations and research findings increasingly blaze across media headlines and heighten anxiety among the public. Understanding the foundations of such news can be daunting. Now in its third edition, Epidemiology for Public Health Practice has become a favorite textbook for undergraduate and graduate students new to epidemiology by providing a comprehensive look at all major topics, from study designs and descriptive epidemiology, to quantitative measures and terminology. Distinguishing itself from other texts with its accessible writing style and immediacy of information presented, the Third Edition has been extensively revised, with updated data and statistics essential to understanding the importance of epidemiology to public health.

Editorial Review:

Delivering the facts to your fingertips, the Oxford Handbook of Tropical Medicine provides an accessible and comprehensive, signs-and-symptoms-based source of information on medical problems commonly seen in the tropics. A handy guide which can fit in the coat pocket and be used easily at the bedside, it has been designed to be as practical as possible with illustrations of blood films and stool smears, which are useful for diagnosis, as well as clinical features, diagnosis, and management. Medical conditions are ordered by system except for the five major tropical conditions - malaria, HIV/STIs, tuberculosis, diarrhoeal diseases, and acute respiratory infections - and fevers. In this new edition the sections on malaria, cardiology, chest medicine, gastroenterology, mental health and dermatology have undergone major revision, and there is new material on altitude sickness, heat stroke, avian flu and fuller poisoning. There is a greater emphasis on pediatric medicine and public health throughout, and new illustrations and photographs have been included to aid with diagnosis. Small enough to throw in your rucksack, this unique handbook is the ultimate quick reference guide for all those working in the tropics.

Excellent Pathophysiology book 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent pathophysiology book available in the market. I am right now preparing for my step 2 but I wish I would have used this book for my step 1. I have a decent score on my step 1 and I have taken the exam recently and I think if somebody masters this book they can rock the exam. This book gives excellent information regarding many diseases. I am trying to study this book right now with CMDT, which is also by the same author. Because CMDT is a very concise text book of IM it doesn't explain all the pathophysiology for a disease but this book has all the answers about the pathophysiology of a disease. And I think its a worth buying book for all the medical students, if you study this book little by little during preclinical years it will help you very much understand the IM in the clinical years. I was surprize to find some infornation which I was craving for since few years of my med school. You will even find pathophysilogy of very rare syndromes, as for example I was amazed when I read about X linked Hypophosphatemic rickets. If you are like me who wants to have explanation behind everything, get this book today, you wan't be disappointed.

Editorial Review:

Now in its Fifth Edition, this trusted guide provides medical students with the link between basic science and clinical medicine. This concise text covers all the essentials in pathophysiology and 89 case studies allow students to apply their knowledge to actual clinical situations.

  • Review questions located throughout each chapter promote self-assessment and serve as an excellent review for USMLE Step 2
  • The two-color design showcases the abundant use of diagrams and tables

Editorial Review:

* JFK's autopsy failed to disclose crucial evidence.
* The deaths of John Belushi and Elvis Presley were far more complex than anyone has let on.
* Decisive medical findings in the von Bulow affair were consistently overlooked.
These are but three of the shocking revelations in Dr. Michael Baden's first-person, no-holds-barred account of his distinguished career in forensic pathology. In determining the causes of tens of thousands of deaths, from those of presidents and rock stars to victims of serial killings, exotic sex rituals, mass disasters, child abuse and drug abuse, Baden has come to the unavoidable conclusion that the search for scientific truth is often sullied by the pressures of expediency. He produces dramatic evidence to demonstrate that political intrigue, influence peddling, and professional incompetence have created a national crisis in forensic medicine.
"A fascinating look into the mechanics of forensics and a disconcerting lesson in the politics of death." -- The New York Times Book Review

"House" without the snark 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This "classic collection of award-winning medical investigative reporting", published in 1988, is an excellent book. Each of the 25 case studies originally appeared as an "Annals of medicine" piece in the New Yorker, and there's not a dud in the bunch.

Most of the cases happened in the 1950's or 1960's, when sophisticated, CSI-era analytical techniques were unavailable. Nonetheless, there is no sense that these stories are dated. Roueche is a natural storyteller and has the rare ability to present technical aspects in a way that is intelligible to the non-expert reader, at just the right level of detail.

It's like 25 "House" episodes, but without the gratuitous obnoxiousness, condescension to the reader, or the ridiculous constraint that only a limping, misanthropic painkiller addict can be right.

Editorial Review:

Contains three fascinating tales of strange illnesses, rare diseases, poisons, and parasites--each tale a thriller of medical suspense by the incomparable Beron Roueche.

Editorial Review:

Can mandatory vaccines trigger developmental disorders and autoimmune diseases? Does the US government secretly calculate how many people will be permanently disabled and killed from vaccines? Did AIDS originate in diseased monkey organs used to incubate polio vaccines? Are new viruses tested on unsuspecting vaccine recipients? How safe is your child from the near and long-term effects of these 'miracle' shots? Are vaccines really safe and effective? Read what the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have to say. Find out what independent researchers have discovered. And listen to distraught mothers testifying before Congress regarding vaccine injury compensation. Then, you be the judge. This comprehensive book is packed with hundreds of important facts and figures. It includes 30 diagrams and more than 900 citations so that all of the information may be confirmed. As a concerned parent, you may then make an informed and responsible decision regarding the benefits and risks of vaccinating your child.

Editorial Review:

Applied Spatial Data Analysis with R is divided into two basic parts, the first presenting R packages, functions, classes and methods for handling spatial data. This part is of interest to users who need to access and visualise spatial data. Data import and export for many file formats for spatial data are covered in detail, as is the interface between R and the open source GRASS GIS. The second part showcases more specialised kinds of spatial data analysis, including spatial point pattern analysis, interpolation and geostatistics, areal data analysis and disease mapping. The coverage of methods of spatial data analysis ranges from standard techniques to new developments, and the examples used are largely taken from the spatial statistics literature. All the examples can be run using R contributed packages available from the CRAN website, with code and additional data sets from the book's own website.

This book will be of interest to researchers who intend to use R to handle, visualise, and analyse spatial data. It will also be of interest to spatial data analysts who do not use R, but who are interested in practical aspects of implementing software for spatial data analysis. It is a suitable companion book for introductory spatial statistics courses and for applied methods courses in a wide range of subjects using spatial data, including human and physical geography, geographical information systems, the environmental sciences, ecology, public health and disease control, economics, public administration and political science.

The book has a website where coloured figures, complete code examples, data sets, and other support material may be found: http://www.asdar-book.org.

The authors have taken part in writing and maintaining software for spatial data handling and analysis with R in concert since 2003.
