Overall a good read 4 out of 5 stars.

Overall I liked this book. I think the author largely achieved what he set out to, which was to tell the story of the lepers of Molokai and tell it in a way that could hold your attention throughout the book.

This book was not however perfect. My main criticism was the constant flow of characters coming in/out of the story, especially all the outsiders (IE members of the board of health). I was often left with questions such as "who was this person again?". I must admit I read this somewhat sporadically over a months time, so that could have had some to do with it, but I did find the sheer number of people presented a bit over the top. This criticism aside, I still found it to be an enjoyable read and would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this kind of story.

Editorial Review:

Beginning in 1866 and continuing for over a century, more than eight thousand people suspected of having leprosy were forcibly exiled to the Hawaiian island of Molokai -- the longest and deadliest instance of medical segregation in American history. Torn from their homes and families, these men, women, and children were loaded into shipboard cattle stalls and abandoned in a lawless place where brutality held sway. Many did not have leprosy, and many who did were not contagious, yet all were ensnared in a shared nightmare.

Here, for the first time, John Tayman reveals the complete history of the Molokai settlement and its unforgettable inhabitants. It's an epic of ruthless manhunts, thrilling escapes, bizarre medical experiments, and tragic, irreversible error. Carefully researched and masterfully told, The Colony is a searing tale of individual bravery and extraordinary survival, and stands as a testament to the power of faith, compassion, and the human spirit.

Easy to read and interesting. 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

After hearing Madeline Drexler speak at my university, I had to read this book. It is clear that Ms. Drexler has put forth a lot of effort toward producing a well-researched and well-written book. There are many quotes from professionals on the front lines of infection control, and there are many examples of normal people suffering from frightening and strange emerging infections.

Drexler's book offers a warning that we must focus on public health issues if we hope to avoid the tragedy that an agent such as a pandemic flu could cause. The book is filled with warnings about the overuse of antibiotics and the inefficiency of public health beauracracy and lack of funding. I hope that more professionals and lay people read this book and heed its message.

Editorial Review:

As timely as it is urgent, this well-researched book from veteran science journalist Madeline Drexler delivers a compelling report on today's most ominous infectious disease threats. She focuses on a different danger in each chapter-from the looming risk of lethal influenza to in-depth information on the public health perils posed by bioterrorism. With a novelist's descriptive eye and a thriller writer's sense of tension, she warns us that the most ceaselessly creative bioterrorist is still Mother Nature, whose microbial operatives are all around us, ready to pounce when conditions are right.

Editorial Review:

From 1932 to 1972, the United States Public Health Service conducted a non-therapeutic experiment involving over 400 black male sharecroppers infected with syphilis. The Tuskegee Study had nothing to do with treatment. It purpose was to trace the spontaneous evolution of the disease in order to learn how syphilis affected black subjects. The men were not told they had syphilis; they were not warned about what the disease might do to them; and, with the exception of a smattering of medication during the first few months, they were not given health care. Instead of the powerful drugs they required, they were given aspirin for their aches and pains. Health officials systematically deceived the men into believing they were patients in a government study of "bad blood", a catch-all phrase black sharecroppers used to describe a host of illnesses. At the end of this 40 year deathwatch, more than 100 men had died from syphilis or related complications. "Bad Blood" provides compelling answers to the question of how such a tragedy could have been allowed to occur. Tracing the evolution of medical ethics and the nature of decision making in bureaucracies, Jones attempted to show that the Tuskegee Study was not, in fact, an aberration, but a logical outgrowth of race relations and medical practice in the United States. Now, in this revised edition of "Bad Blood", Jones traces the tragic consequences of the Tuskegee Study over the last decade. A new introduction explains why the Tuskegee Study has become a symbol of black oppression and a metaphor for medical neglect, inspiring a prize-winning play, a Nova special, and a motion picture. A new concluding chapter shows how the black community's wide-spread anger and distrust caused by the Tuskegee Study has hampered efforts by health officials to combat AIDS in the black community. "Bad Blood" was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and was one of the "N.Y. Times" 12 best books of the year.

This book has helped me and others 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 32 people found this review helpful.

I thought this book was VERY helpful. My sister-in-law was overweight and sick from candida and when she followed the plan in this book she lost a TON of weight and she feels better than ever. I recently found out that some of my health problems are from candida. This book has been helpful to me also. I especially love the scriptures and the prayers. They have helped me through a hard thing. I have also lost ALOT of weight from following this plan, but more than that, I feel awesome physically. Also, several people in our church have been following this book and are doing great! DR. COLBERT HAS JUST RECENTLY RELEASED A NEW BIBLE CURE BOOK FOR CANDIDA WITH RECIPES FOR THE CANDIDA DIET. I THINK IT MIGHT EVEN BE BETTER THAN THIS ONE.

If you think you might be dealing with candida or yeast, then this is the book for you! I highly recommend it. It has truly changed my life.

Editorial Review:

People who suffer from fatigue, muscle aches, food sensitivities, psoriasis, asthma and many other common complaints may actually have a yeast infection. Too much yeast (specifically, "Candida Albicans") in the body is a problem that applies equally to both men and women. Candida Albican, a common yeast, normally lives in the human body where it causes no problems-provided the body's biochemistry is balanced and the immune system is strong. Dr. Don Colbert shares his insight on yeast infections and suggests cures to prevent them from weakening the immune system.

ARGUABLY SECOND TO NONE! 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

As long as the issue concerns clinical microbiology, "Koneman's Color Atlas and Textbook of Diagnostic Microbiology" remains the undisputed champion. This newly published sixth edition is the definitive guide for both students and professionals. Its extensive and up-to-date coverage (of bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, and virology) is second to none. In fact, this 1535-paged hardcover edition is an all-encompassing one-stop medical microbiology text. Very few standalone books come even close! And, its close-to 630 color sample figures exceed what many standalone color atlases boast of.
Relative to the previous editions, it is my wish to emphasize that every chapter of this book has undergone extensive and updated revisions. All aspects of theoretical and practical informations have received generous facelifts; and all the lab tests included conform to the current Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute's (formerly NCCLS) specifications. The same apply to the design, general layout, organization, and remarkable referencing of each topic. Every paragraph of this book was explained in simple, easy-to-understand English. Indeed, this book is a winner: anytime, anywhere! It is a true gold-standard!
There is so much positive qualities going for it that one may end-up writing pages while trying to cover them all. However, I must highlight the only downside I noticed, which is that this book is very heavy. Still, its well-bounded hardcover, reasonable retail price, as well as the high-quality papers used throughout its 1500-plus pages, offer logical compensation for the extra weight. Cheers!

Editorial Review:

Long considered the definitive work in its field, this new edition presents all the principles and practices readers need for a solid grounding in all aspects of clinical microbiology--bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, and virology. Tests are presented according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (formerly NCCLS) format. This extensively revised edition includes practical guidelines for cost-effective, clinically relevant evaluation of clinical specimens including extent of workup and abbreviated identification schemes. New chapters cover the increasingly important areas of immunologic and molecular diagnosis. Clinical correlations link microorganisms to specific disease states. Over 600 color plates depict salient identification features of organisms.

Not the best book on the subject 2 out of 5 stars.

Overly complex in exposition. Insufficiently illustrated. Represents an NIH viewpoint, not the best in science. Does not relate the molecular details to the cellular interactions sufficiently.

Very useful 5 out of 5 stars.

If you have lot of time to read, yes, this book is a MUST. But if you have 40 exams plus practices plus meetings plus, plus, plus.....Kuby is a good option. Anyway, never trust only in a single book.

Editorial Review:

Environmental Health has established itself as the most succinct and comprehensive textbook on the subject. This extensively revised and rewritten third edition continues this tradition by incorporating new developments and by adding timely coverage of topics such as environmental economics and terrorism.

As in previous volumes, the new edition presents balanced assessments of environmental problems, examining their local and global implications, their short- and long-range impacts, and their importance in both developed and less developed countries of the world. The Third Edition also addresses emerging issues such as environmental justice, deforestation, the protection of endangered species, multiple chemical sensitivity, and the application of the threshold concept in evaluating the effects of toxic and radioactive materials.

Whether discussing acid rain, ozone depletion, global warming, or more traditional subjects such as the management and control of air, water, and food, Dade Moeller emphasizes the need for a systems approach. As with previous volumes, Environmental Health, Third Edition, offers a depth of understanding that is without peer. While it covers technical details, it is also a book that anyone with an interest in the environment can pick up and browse at random.

Great Intro, But Lacking in the Details - 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

First and foremost, this book is an oustanding, fantastic introduction to the world of infectious diseases. Because of two factors, however, much informatoin is lost. Firstly, the book is rather short - hardly three hundred pages. Secondly, there are thousands of years to cover in such a volume. As a result, the reader is left with a superficial - albeit insightful - look at the history of diseases throughout history.

Karlen attempts - and succeeds, as best as expected - to do three things in this book. He begins by discussing the disease, or outbreak, at hand. Syphilis, tuberculosis, legionnaire's, marberg, ebola are all covered - en brief. Then, he goes on to elaborate on the social climate of the time, to set a context for the reader. He then discusses the impact that these diseases had on thepopulace.

As a personal fiend of specific, explicit writings on the physiological results of diseases, I was somewhat disappointed: AIDs is hardly discussed, and the physical descriptions and onsets are scant, if existant. However, Karlen's adept critical thinking - he analyzes the social impact, etc of each outbreak - makes this book worthwhile.

Overall, a good introduction. I kept notes through this book on topics that I was interested in exploring further, and was not disappointed.

Editorial Review:

A noted medical historian places recent outbreaks of deadly diseases in historical perspective, with accounts of other alarming and recurring diseases throughout history and of the ways in which humans have adapted. Reprint. 17,500 first printing.
