A must-read for anyone interested in their health and longevity. 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Finally a clear, well-documented account of this nation's delusion about
fat and carbohydrates that has made us the obese, disease ridden country
that we have become. Because of the erroneous obsession of Ancel Keys and
his supporters we have been lied to by the entire medical profession and
have sacrificed the health of a whole generation. How easily we are duped
when the results of so many studies are selectively distorted and
dissenting opinion is squelched. This is the same technique the neocons
used to get us into the Iraq war.
Fat is good for you and especially saturated fat. Cholesterol below 200
results in cancer and hemorrhagic stroke. READ THIS BOOK.

Editorial Review:

For decades we have been taught that fat is bad for us, carbohydrates better, and that the key to a healthy weight is eating less and exercising more. Yet despite this advice, we have seen unprecedented epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Taubes argues that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates, like white flour, easily digested starches, and sugars, and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number. In this groundbreaking book, award-winning science writer Gary Taubes shows us that almost everything we believe about the nature of a healthy diet is wrong.

Editorial Review:

An authoritative description of functional strategies designed to improve back health and restore or maintain back function following injury. The text refutes practices which are contra-indicated in promoting back health and provides appropriate strategies to offset injuries and restore function. For ease of reference, the book is divided into three parts. Part one reviews the issues pertinent to low back injury prevention and rehabilitation, functional anatomy and biomechanics and how the back is prone to mechanical failure. Part two looks at how to develop improved injury prevention programmes by assessing the risks, creating ergonomic interventions and training personnel. Part three deals with how to improve rehabilitation techniques through proper training and exercise programmes. Ergonomic issues related to manual handling, repetitive motion injuries and sport are dealt with in detail and knowledge of content and its application is reinforced with tutorials in each part of the book.

The book title says it all: "OT for Children" 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This resource provides an overview of many conditions found in pediatric treatment. The reviews of developmental progressions of all ADLs, pre-writing, fine motor, gross motor, cognitive, and other skills are presented both in concise, outline form and in paragraph form for more details. All chapters are well-organized, and focused on OT practice, while the section by Exner on the Development of Hand Skills is exceptional. This is a MUST HAVE resource for OT working in pediatrics.

Not the easiest reading for a textbook. 2 out of 5 stars.

This is a very informative book and I will probably use it as a strong reference in years to come. It is not, however, a very easily read textbook. Some areas are repetative and make for very slow reading. Many times the author backs up her explanations citing studies. This is excellent in a reference book, however, as an introduction to an area of OT, it makes learning the subject matter laborious.

Great book...I think 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I just thought I'd let future customers know that this book has some of the same questions as the second edition, not all though, so I think it's worth the investment. I have both and have found both to be helpful. I haven't used the CDs because I acquired the books from friends who lost the CDs, but the books are great. I haven't taken the test yet, but highly recommend these books from my experience so far.

Great Book 4 out of 5 stars.

Just took my exam a month ago and this was then only book I purchased. I would recommend this book to anyone who is preparing for the NBCOT exam. The CD in the back of the book is nice to have, but I found the book itself to work better.

Editorial Review:

Tell your students to prepare for the computerized NBCOT OTR exam with the book that comes with a money-back guarantee that they will pass the test! Over 1,000 review questions in five practice examinations help identify areas of weakness and improve students' test taking performance. The questions help them become familiar with the format of the questions in the actual examination.

Good resource for diagnosis information and protocols. 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

As an American OTR living and practicing in Japan, I need to have a quick reference for the many diagnoses that I am presented with daily. Without the benefit of other therapists to consult with, I am continually looking to this book for a starting place. A good resource for experienced practitioners and a must-own for beginning therapists. Now if there was only an updated edition?

Great reference book! 5 out of 5 stars.

All around great OT review book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book covers almost every diagnosis that is studied in occupational therapy. The topics review the most important aspects but still give enough detail so that you are not left wondering what else you needed to know.
Highly recommend to any OT student, especially great to use for fieldwork.

Editorial Review:

Using the clinical model of the whiplash syndrome, this groundbreaking book describes the alterations in brain chemistry and function induced in individuals by what is known as traumatic stress or traumatization-experiencing a life-threatening event while in a state of helplessness. The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease presents evidence of the resulting and relatively permanent alteration in neurophysiology, neurochemistry, and neuronal organization-changes correlated with many of the most common, yet poorly understood, physical complaints and diseases, including whiplash, migraines, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and other painful, difficult-to-treat conditions.

short blurb for Whiplash catalogs: "Why does my neck still ache so much? The accident was months ago. My doctor thinks I'm crazy or lazy or faking it. What's wrong with me?"

What's wrong, according to The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease, is that physical traumas and emotional traumas are powerfully interrelated. After decades of research into brain chemistry, Dr. Scaer has identified some of the ways that the helplessness and terror of sudden trauma induce changes in brain function and the resulting consequences these measurable chemical changes can have on muscles, digestion, blood pressure, and many other bodily systems. Using the clinical model of the whiplash syndrome, this electrifying book offers new hope to anyone suffering from whiplash, post-traumatic stress disorder, or a history of abuse. It even provides ways to cope with new traumas to minimize the emotional and physical damage!

Editorial Review:

When the first edition of Environmental Health appeared in 1992 it was quickly recognized as the single best resource for students, public health professionals, and general readers concerned with the well-being of the environment and its inhabitants. Now, four completely new chapters and an additional two hundred pages of text bring this definitive work up to date.

This new edition maintains the earlier edition's balanced coverage of a broad spectrum of timely topics, including air, water, and food; occupational health; insect and rodent control; the effects, uses, and management of ionizing and nonionizing radiation; accidents as a cause of injuries and deaths; natural and man-made disasters; the impact of energy usage; and environmental standards and monitoring. The new edition also offers completely new chapters on four crucial subjects: environmental toxicology, environmental epidemiology, environmental law, and risk assessment. In addition, drinking water and liquid wastes, formerly discussed in combination, are now covered in separate chapters.

Another Great Read With Valuable Insights 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The link between improving safety and corporate culture is made very clearly in this latest work. The behaviours of management are stressed as a major influence on culture and hence safety. A welcome addition.

Editorial Review:

Building on years of research and experience in the field, Leading with Safety redefines organizational safety as an activity that both leads other performance areas and in turn must be led. Thomas Krause poses the question, "What does it take to be a great safety leader?" — and answers with a comprehensive new model for understanding safety leadership as it affects organizational culture and safety climate. Leading with Safety defines the practices, tools, and systems essential to creating an injury-free workplace, including the role of employees at each level, special considerations for coaching the senior executive leader, and the two crucial aspects of human performance that every leader needs to know. Ending with inspiring real-world examples or organizations that have put these tools into practice, Leading with Safety is written for any leader who wants to lead with safety toward a more robust, productive and effective organization.

M.B. Early is a great writer!! She makes the mental health area of OT easy to understand. She uses basic ideas and common terminology. This is a wonderful book for OT and OTA students. Early has really helped me to comprehend the mental health aspect. From an OTA student.

Editorial Review:

The Third Edition of this classic text provides the basic foundation for the practice of occupational therapy for persons with mental health problems. This invaluable reference reflects new developments in basic neuroscience, psychopharmacology, occupational therapy theory and treatment methods. The text is written in an engaging, user-friendly style, offering ample tables, group protocols, case studies, and text boxes. In addition to providing information on newer medications such as SSRIs and atypical antipsychotics, this edition offers three additional treatment models: cognitive-behavioral, psychoeducation, and psychiatric rehabilitation. A new chapter on "Who Is the Consumer?" as well as increased information on the applications of DSM-IV diagnoses are covered.
