Fantastic Book for BSN 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is really helping me understand what should have been learned in basic nursing classes. It is easy to read and comprehend, and it's not too wordy like some textbooks. I've just graduated, and I felt like I didn't really understand fluids and electrolytes. I want to be an outstanding nurse, and I also want to pass the NCLEX on the first time around. This book has already helped me with both!

Editorial Review:

Learning about fluids and electrolytes doesn't get any easier. This edition boasts new features that further simplify a serious subject -- all in the lighthearted, Incredibly Easy style. "Cheat Sheets" are fun learning aids, and "Practice Makes Perfect" offers case study questions and answers that let nurses assess their progress. Expanded nursing interventions with rationales and "Ages and Stages" -- highlighting information about fluids and electrolytes across the lifespan -- broaden understanding. Contents include balancing basics, such as fluids, electrolytes, and acids and bases; disorders that cause imbalances; treating imbalances; and more.

Always the Best 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I started using Fischbach in Nursing School and was re-acquainted with it when I joined the Air Force. I have never found anything at all close to the quality of the content. I had a copy at the hospital until someone else recognized the quality of it for themselves. So I immediatly went out and bought another. I'm afraid I need another one at work. I don't mind everyone liking them. I just don't care to be the sole supplier to the world. I guess I will have to chain it to the inside of my locker.
Thanks

Hard to reference 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Although full of usefull info; it is Very hard to find that info when you need it most. I am an ER PA and would find this pocket reference more useful if it had a better index. As of Jan 2007 I would recommend PEPID ER suite over the Tarascons for those that are handier with PDA's.

A very good pocket reference 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

A very handy pocket reference book for cheap! As good as most Palm programs, but it costs much less. Good for the EM Resident/Attending.

Great Review - Light on Path 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

The book was wonderful for a quick Anatomy, Embryo, Histo, Phys and Biochem review. Basically it's good for everything but Path. And lets face it - most of us use Goljan Rapid Review for that. If you have used or like the Kaplan lecture series books, this will work for you. Its a high yield review of lecture material in Kaplan mainly in chart format. Its main advantage over FA is the use of pictures that help to illustrate the anatomy and embryology. I love it and have pushed FA2008 aside in favor of this book. In quick review - you WILL need a different Path review book, but this is more detailed and better as a high yield review of general info!

Editorial Review:

Includes:

  • Core basic science concepts reviewed for success in medical programs and the USMLE
  • Structured by organ system and discipline
  • Charts, pictures, diagrams, and lists to supplement basic medical science concepts
  • Foundation skills from pathology, pharmacology, physiology, microbiology, immunology, behavioral science, biochemistry, molecular biology, anatomy, embryology, and histology
  • Free supplementary online material including:
    • Eight different online exercises (labeling, reaction speed, separating, synaptic match, shooting game, flashcards, multiple-choice questions) to test your knowledge of basic science concepts.
    • The scoring method for the online exercises features a personalized learning ""matrix,” providing a visual snapshot of your strengths and weaknesses organized by both organ system and discipline.

Editorial Review:

The 3rd edition of this widely used resource offers superb guidance on diagnostic and laboratory testing for health professionals in both academic and clinical settings. The chapters are organized by test type and each chapter begins with a list of the tests covered within the test type, as well as an overview of that category including specimen collection techniques. The tests are presented in a consistent format that includes normal findings, indications, contraindications, potential complications, interfering factors, procedure and patient care, test results and clinical significance, and related tests. This full-color book is easy to use and covers virtually every clinically significant test, including more than 50 new to this edition.

  • A full color interior design and over 140 vivid color photographs and illustrations depict procedures, equipment, techniques, and concepts, making the content more visually appealing to the reader and the concepts easier to understand.
  • Comprehensive coverage of all diagnostic and laboratory tests routinely performed today. Over 700 individual tests are covered in approximately 360 entries.
  • Clinical Significances of test results, indicated in italic type, explain the pathophysiology of disease processes and how they relate to test results.
  • Color-coded chapter thumb-tabs, alphabetically organized chapters, and two lists of all tests (Appendix A, Alphabetical List of Tests and Appendix B, List of Tests by Body System) make every test easy to find.
  • Critical Values are highlighted with color to alert the reader to situations requiring immediate intervention.
  • Related Tests that provide similar information or are used to evaluate the same body system, disease process, or symptom, are listed after each test entry along with the page number and the purpose of each related test.
  • SI units are included in the Normal Findings of appropriate tests.
  • Clinical Priorities boxes emphasize especially pertinent information that must be kept in mind when performing or evaluating a test or preparing a patient for a test.
  • A special symbol for drug-related interfering factors alerts readers to the effects of pharmacologic agents on tests.
  • Icon for patient teaching-related care indicates information that should be shared with patients and their families.
  • Home Care Responsibilities provide important patient teaching guidelines and instructions for patients outside of acute care settings.
  • Age-Related Concerns boxes address the special needs of pediatric and geriatric patients and critical age-related variations in values.
  • Abbreviations for tests are listed in an appendix, and symbols and units of measurement are listed on the front inside cover.
  • Increased and decreased abnormal findings are highlighted with directional arrows.

  • More than 50 new tests have been added, including discussions of the most recently introduced tests such as bioterrorism infectious agents testing, bone turnover biochemical markers (osteocalcin), diabetes mellitus autoantibody panel, mammary ductoscopy, HIV viral load, natriuretic peptides (including BNP), and thryoglobulin.
  • The appendix on Disease and Organ Panels lists the tests in 26 common panels, along with a page reference to the main discussion of each test.

Excellent book, one of the best I've used in med school 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I read this book cover to cover for my cardio theme. It was clear and well written. I would recommend it highly to anyone in medical school who wants a clear easy read. It has all the detail you need to know, without extraneous material.

Editorial Review:

Completely rewritten and updated for its Fourth Edition, this best-selling text is a comprehensive, clear, concise, and easy-to-understand introduction to cardiovascular diseases. It is written by internationally recognized Harvard Medical School faculty and select medical students, and is the best text to bridge basic physiology with clinical care of patients. This edition provides updated coverage of pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, pathophysiology of acute coronary syndromes, mechanisms of heart failure, molecular mechanisms of dysrhythmias, the genomic basis of cardiomyopathies and congenital heart disease, and pharmacology. Numerous new illustrations are included. A companion Website on thePoint will include animations and audio heart sounds.

Improving Communications in the Health Care encounter 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Most patients feel rushed and not heard in their encounters with health care providers. This clearly written "how to" book provides principles and examples of conversation that can improve the quality of communication around life style change between provider and patient. Listening rather than telling, and guiding rather than directing or preaching are difficult skills for health providers. Giving the patient "a voice and a choice" in making changes in their unhealthy behaviors is essential to successful outcomes. This practical guide to health behavior change has made a difference in my practice when patients give me permimssion to discuss their drinking, smoking, drug use, over eating, fitness and seat belt use with them.

Editorial Review:

Much of health care today involves helping patients manage conditions whose outcomes can be greatly influenced by lifestyle or behavior change. Written specifically for health care professionals, this concise book presents powerful tools to enhance communication with patients and guide them in making choices to improve their health, from weight loss, exercise, and smoking cessation, to medication adherence and safer sex practices. Engaging dialogues and vignettes bring to life the core skills of motivational interviewing (MI) and show how to incorporate this brief evidence-based approach into any health care setting. Appendices include MI training resources and publications on specific medical conditions.

Excellent review book!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

So far this book has been an excellent review book for step 2!! It's also a great quick reference for medicine wards/clinics. It doesn't have all the details, but definitely has everything you need to jog your memory (or a good jumping point to go look at a more detailed book). It's very easy to read and the pictures really help solidify points.

makes me smarter 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

highly recommended for undergrad and medical students... good overview of pathology to put the details into a big pictures.

Editorial Review:

Provides a conceptual overview of pathophysiology and mechanisms of disease, designed to ease the transition from the basic sciences to the clinical years. Should be particularly useful in the transition from the second to the third year of medical school, but should also be very helpful to nurses and other health care professionals. Shows the clinical relevance of the basic sciences through overall principles and understanding. Accompanied by a CD on Differential Diagnosis, showing the interpretation of common lab tests and patient symptoms and signs.

No answer explanations! 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am really distracted by this - I have the current (eighth) edition and it says on the back and on the description here that the end of chapter questions have full explanations for all answer choices, which I value. Yet the appendix at the back is just an answer key with no explanations at all, just letters. This is really distracting to me, I keep thinking they must be somewhere! But it's not that big of a book. They totally aren't there, they aren't anywhere - it makes me not trust anything this book says, if they're going to screw that up so blatantly.

Too complex 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I got this book free from a friend. This book was too complex for me in med school and is still too complex for me as an intern interested in Pulm Medicine. Stick with your school's curriculum to understand the concepts as best you can, like I did. I read reviews for another book entitled Respiratory Physiology: A Clinical Approach (Integrated Physiology) by a different author. I was so impressed by 10 5-star ratings for this book, I decided to purchase it now to regain better insight into pulm physiology. I wish I came across this book while in school. I'm purchasing it today, will go through it this June, and write a thorough review for it. As for John West's book on pulm physiology, save your money.

Editorial Review:

Widely considered the "gold standard" textbook for respiratory physiology, this compact, concise, and easy-to-read text is now in its fully updated Eighth Edition. New student-friendly features include Key Points boxes at the end of each chapter and review questions and answers. A companion Website will offer the fully searchable text, plus animations that illustrate difficult physiologic concepts.
