This is what your memory needs! 4 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the best investment in medical books that I have made. I am in 3rd year now and have accumulated heaps of COMPREHENSIVE books that I have only ever just flipped through. Since buying "Advanced Surgical Recall", I have used it every single time a topic pops up in my surgical term. It includes topics on General Surgery as well as Surgical Specialties, plus other useful background information. There is also some anatomy, with occasional drawings to emphasize. Admittedly, some of the questions are too advanced for me at this stage (I also love my "Surgical Recall" but that's another story, by the way the 2 books are complementary and in no way exclude the usefulness of the other), but the majority are just what I need! I anticipate I will find it completely relevant for my 4th year exam next year. The 2 column format with questions on the left and answers on the right is ideal for testing those neurons...and the bookmark that comes with the book is absolutely indispensable. Basically it emphasizes what you would need to know and not more. The only thing is...I wish there is a version with metric units, any references to fluid and electrolyte measurements are totally meaningless to me here is Australia. I will write them in I think. Of course you will still need a proper surgical text, admittedly I have written in a few additional points in the book that I thought were important from reading other texts. But I had my surgical exam just today and the use of this book in revision was just invaluable. Not to mention those times when you do not feel like even glancing at your big surgery text, or when you have about 10 minutes spare while waiting in the car or for the pasta to cook....just attempting a few questions will make you feel constructive! This book has started a craze in me to check out all the other books in the "Recall" series...oh dear looks like an expensive year for me!

Editorial Review:

Advanced Surgical Recall, Third Edition is a quick review for the ABSITE and oral board exams in surgery. The book is written in rapid-fire question-and-answer format and contains detailed illustrations of anatomic landmarks and surgical techniques. This edition has seven new Microvignettes chapters that test recall via sample cases. These Microvignettes chapters include Clinical, Surgical Pathognomonic, Complications, Blood, Surgical Laboratory, Medical Treatment of Surgical Diagnoses, and Eponyms. Other new chapters include Advanced Procedures, Cell Biology and Cytokines, Wounds, Drains and Tubes, Surgical Respiratory Care, Renal Facts, Surgery by the Numbers and Surgical Formulae, Hand Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Diagnostic Surgical Stimulation and Radiographic Tests, and Power Review of Surgical Physiology.

Editorial Review:

SOAP for Family Medicine features 90 clinical problems with each case presented in an easy to read 2-page layout. Each step presents information on how that case would likely be handled. Questions under each category teach the students important steps in clinical care. Blackwell's new SOAP series is a unique resource that also provides a step-by-step guide to learning how to properly document patient care. Covering the problems most commonly encountered on the wards, the text uses the familiar "SOAP" note format to record important clinical information and guide patient care. SOAP format puts the emphasis back on the patient's clinical problem not the diagnosis. This series is a practical learning tool for proper clinical care, improving communication between physicians, and accurate documentation. The books not only teach students what to do, but also help them understand why. Students will find these books a "must have" to keep in their white coat pockets for wards and clinics.

The second section is devoted to answer "what" students can expect to see on the exam. Over 1,000 sample questions are organized into three user-friendly categories: written examination, written simulation, and practical practice. The written examination section includes over 350 new multiple choice questions covering athletic training domains and other related subjects. Realistic clinical scenarios are tested in the written simulation portion, while the practical practice questions pose realistic tests and procedures for the reader to perform.
With more exam questions, an on-line component with written examination (multiple choice) questions, and a latent-image pen format presenting written simulation situations, Athletic Training Exam Review: A Student Guide to Success, Second Edition is an essential resource for anyone preparing for the NATABOC certification exam.

Just what I was looking for 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

When I recently went to work for a Hospice service, I needed a book I could take with me on the road. A friend recommended this one, and I couldn't be more happy. It includes every nearly every blood test, normal lab values, whether or not the patient needs to be NPO, and even which tube to draw the blood in. Just the right information, and in a convenient size, too.

Editorial Review:

This user-friendly handbook is a succinct clinical reference derived from the author's reference book, A Manual of Laboratory and Diagnostic Tests, Sixth Edition. Designed with the practicing nurse and nursing student in mind, this portable-trim size book contains an alphabetical listing of common lab and diagnostic tests, and nursing diagnoses and interventions in a consistent format. Focus is on the nurse's role in performing, evaluating, or assisting with lab and diagnostic tests. Practical nursing care information is also presented. Clinical Alerts appear throughout to highlight valuable information. Now with more tests! A Brandon-Hill Recommended Title.

So you want to be an Internist? 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Good overall general review of internal medicine. A little too basic for serious IM board review, however. Would probably be most appropriate for a busy first year resident/intern in internal medicine or family practice. Might even be just right for a bright fourth year medical student aspiring to join the ranks of IM.
I would STRONGLY recommend the Internal Medicine Medstudy books as the backbone of your review prior to taking the ABIM certifying or recertifying exam!!! The Medstudy DVDs compliment the books as well. Worked great for me. Mayo Review and MKSAP are decent, also.

Editorial Review:

Following the traditional First Aid format, this review provides high-yield information residents & physicians need to know to pass the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) licensure examination for certification and/or re-certification. Includes background information (what to expect, how to apply, how to succeed), high-yield facts organized by subject, and a review section of relevant exam review resources.

Excellent - Keep in pocket Reference 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A fast, keep in your shirt pocket reference for drug name, dosing, available dosing sizes, route of clearance and safety in pregnancy or lactation. It is tiny - a centimeter thick and shirt pocket dimensioned. Really great when a patient comes in with some oddball psych med, is found to be pregnant or you get a braincramp somewhere around your thirtieth patient of the day. I use this little gem regularly.

Editorial Review:

This is the Pocket Pharmacopoeia for the power user! The expanded version of the classic Tarascon Pocket Pharmacopoeia continues the high-quality tradition of a convenient and organized pocket manual detailing typical drug dosing (both FDA approved and off-label uses), available trade and generic formulations, metabolism, Canadian trade names, relative pricing information, and safety in pregnancy and lactation. The Deluxe takes it all a step further by including additional drugs and dosing indications, black-box warnings, notes regarding adverse effects and drug interactions, and a table of cytochrome P450 isozymes. Packed with this expanded information and more tables than the Classic, the Deluxe is still small enough to comfortably fit in your lab coat pocket. As with the Classic, all entries are meticulously peer-reviewed by drug information experts and clinicians of multiple specialties.

Pretty good book.. 3 out of 5 stars.
14 of 16 people found this review helpful.

The book (and others in the series I have used) is quite good, with clear, well-summarized material. There are a few caveats, however:
1. In this 1st edition, there are many typos. Most are obvious (mispelling, repeating a word or phrase or phrase twice in a row, etc.), but betray a lack of proofreading. I THINK all the important information is accurate, but the typos don't inspire confidence...
2. The font size is big, the line spacing generous, and there's lots of white space on the pages, which makes for easy reading, but as a result it's not a small book. It would be nice if some of the font sizing/line spacing were sacrificed for a more pocketable book that might fit in a white coat, like the "Recall" series. (The "Recall" series has its hits and misses, but Surgical Recall is a must-have book for the surgery rotation. Really. It goes very well with First Aid or the similar "Blueprints.")
3. The "Blueprints" series is very similar to this "First Aid" series, with the addition of a test prep. question/answer section in the back. It would be nice if First Aid had SOME sort of review mechanism--maybe Q/A's at the end of each chapter or at the end of the book.

Overall, it's a good series, even with my "gripes."

I found the book very helpfull and more conventional than the corresponding CSA books 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

what I liked about the book is , it didn't waste my time reading irrelevant information about what's the test or how it is projected (I beleive all Med. graduates and USMLE students know pretty much enough about the system).. this book just gave a very breif right on the money good information about the test then stroke towards the most often tested cases .

The best companion to FA for Step 2 CS 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is the best book I used for my preparation to Step 2 CS. I was quite nervous and read all books available for it. It helped me pass this exam without any sweat. FA for CS and Complex cases will cover 99.9% of cases offered on this examination. There is absolutely no need to go for Kaplan, Swartz or any other classes (which flourish on suckers). UsmleWorld is useless in my opinion since it contained cases similar to FA at an additional premium.
In short: all materials have to be used with dedicated partner. If your English is bad, try reading common statements out loud and recording your voice for review. Follow outlined mnemonics and you will pass!
